over the christmas period we witnessed a predictable influx of new sim racing and racing game fans eager to engross themselves within the genre there were lots of flashy new steering wheels photos of upgraded rigs and of course plenty of game sales with all of this flashy new equipment simracing forums and social media pages became inundated with new racers looking for advice one group of questions that i noticed repeatedly throughout january was about our two favorite kunos simulazione titles assetto corsa and assetto corsa competizione which one should i buy and what exactly is the difference between the two because the only difference in the titles is the addition of the word competizione which doesn't exactly give much away many people are left a bit unsure and confused as to what the difference actually is and i fully understand why i didn't even understand what was going on when i first heard about race frame competition that that is the actual translation by the way but i'm not here to teach you italian thankfully with the imminent arrival of the next gen console version of acc i feel like now is a good time to talk to you about these two games and explain the differences between the two and also tell you exactly why you should buy both of them not just one [Music] so where to start well both of these games are racing simulators created by kunos simulazione with a focus on realism assetto corsa was the first to appear becoming available in early access mode for pc users during the latter stages of 2013. the game was officially released on the 19th of december 2014 with playstation 4 and xbox one versions finally appearing in august 2016. this was a sim that aimed to give players a hugely diverse racing experience with as much variety as possible when it comes to disciplines of motorsport you could drive a theater 500 abarth around bran's hatch a modern le'mon prototype around spa or a historic gt car in the nordschleife the opportunities were endless you could even go drag racing or drifting if you wanted to this game wasn't tied to any official series giving the developers creative freedom to go out and make the game as versatile as possible there is plenty more to talk about here so i'm going to come back to it but first let's introduce you to assetto corsa competencione launched on the 29th of may 2019 for pc users acc is the official video game of what was formerly known as the blancpain endurance series now called gt world challenge to make things easier let's think of this game as gtwc the game that sounds alright actually this game focuses solely on gt racing with the main attraction being the gt3 cars used in the official series these cars are updated each season with the new official liveries and new cars such as the bmw m4 have also been added upon launch there were also some support categories included these being the lamborghini huracan super trofeo cars and a porsche 911 cop car dlc has since been released adding a variety of gt4 cars and more single make support categories are expected to be added in the future it seems like the focus of this game was to create as detailed and immersive experience as possible within the one particular series kuno simulatsoni pushed the boundaries with their attention to detail and because of this within acc you will find some of the most accurate sound and track representation in existence of course a major downside is that you're limited to a very specific discipline of racing so that's a brief introduction into what these games are all about but now let's talk about the key similarities and differences firstly and as we've already discussed the original assetto corsa has more layers of variety with road cars single-seaters gts touring cars and historics as well as drag racing and drifting assetto corsa competition on the other hand has only gt3s gt4s and a few support categories that fall somewhere in between now let's talk about mod ability assetto corsa allows this further increasing the range of content available whilst acc doesn't it's always great to be able to get your hands on community made cars and tracks that you couldn't otherwise try so for that reason the option of mods has to be a good thing for consumers however if there is a downside it's the lack of quality control with acc you know that every single car on track is going to be held to the same high standard when it comes to quality whilst on ac you will likely have an inconsistency when going from one car and track combo to another this is of course optional and you can stick to the vanilla game so it is a nice option to have available when it comes to the user interface both games have different looks and both have their drawbacks and advantages i would say that overall acc is a better design which makes sense given that it's the newer title a set of corsa users often use an external alternative ui which can be downloaded thanks to the game's modability but on a personal level i've had issues getting this working properly so for me it's still acc that edges it the game mode options are fairly predictable for modern simulation based titles both have the classic single player quick races time trials and practice sessions as well as customizable championship modes acc does include a few extras such as hot stint mode hot lap super pool and official race weekends whilst ac has a time attack mode and the aforementioned drifting and drag racing both games have career modes as well although neither is particularly mind-blowing assetto corsa is what you might expect you have to progress your way through various categories from small hot hatches up to gts prototypes and formula one cars there are different event types within each category which keeps things interesting but there aren't any extra immersive elements to really draw you in acc starts you off in the lamborghini young driver program for a test event at monza but once you progress from here and signing for a gtwc team it is a fairly linear path going forward as you play through numerous championships if you're a fan of multiplayer racing then the good news is you can do this on both setting up your own server isn't a simple in-game process but joining one is along with the usual plethora of private league racing events that are present on both ac will often have drifting and nordschleife attract day-style servers whilst acc will be full of private team tests and public races the latter also has a competition system meaning you can race your way through the ranks into the top split and compete in a high level sim race officially run by the game itself it's nowhere near as fleshed out as the likes of eye racing gt sport and even race room but as a simple way of racing properly online it's a perfectly adequate system one final game mode that both titles have is special events these mean entirely different things on each of the games in ascetic corsa this is a collection of offline races hot lap challenges and time trials across a variety of cars and tracks which can be completed on assets of course at competition it's a more hardcore game mode where you challenge yourself against other players through an online leaderboard in different hot stint and hot lap sessions this contrast sums up the difference between the games pretty well in all honesty before we jump into the gameplay let's chat briefly about some extra features that are worth noting acc has an advanced weather system with variable rain levels and weather patterns assetto corsa is a bit more straightforward with some wind and time of day adjustments possible but no rain as you might have guessed there is a mod for that if you really wanted it though and what about custom liveries both allow you to import your own externally made custom deliveries but only acc allows you to create a basic design within the game itself both games do support virtual reality although it's not super intuitive in either case and its integration quality lags behind the likes of optimal ballistic 2 and eye racing so with all that in mind i think it's time to test out the gameplay back to back okay so we've fired up a set of course competition we're in our gt3 lamborghini huracan around xanver and of course this is the old xanver without the banking on the final corner same circuit and same car that we should find in ascetic corsa as well so this game you get so much feedback through the steering wheel for me as i was saying earlier the attention to detail and the sound is one of the most important things because you can hear every single little movement every time you hit a curb when you run onto the gravel or the grass the sound is very intense and that is realistic when you're in a racing car it's very very loud indeed and instantly it's those kind of things like that there that make me feel really connected to it so when i first jump in it those were the things that caught my eye with acc in terms of the graphics and stuff it's also very very good the the one issue i would say though is you need a pretty good pc to be able to run it smoothly like this is a high spec pcm on right now and i can run it at pretty high graphics but i wouldn't want to strap everything up to full because then it would really really struggle to cope in terms of replays and stuff and it wouldn't give me enough leeway so it is very heavy on the performance which ac doesn't have the same problem you can really throw the graphics up nice and high and get away with it you have to say though it does look gorgeous in general like the as i keep saying the detail and also visually like the the road surfaces and stuff like that look incredibly realistic the curbs the grass whatever circuit you drive on in this game it's probably going to be one of the best versions of that circuit you've ever been on or at least that's my experience anyway when it comes to physics and force feedback acc didn't really grab everyone's attention straight away a lot of people found it felt quite numb at first compared to the likes of arfax 2 and i racing and people were saying it just it just didn't give them that much feeling at all now i've never found that even on a kind of budget entry-level wheel i find that this game always gave you a lot of feedback but i do understand where people are coming from you do suffer a lot of understeer in the car kind of when it gets loose you don't always feel exactly where it is underneath you but then having used the direct drive wheel with this game you know that really changed things and also the the 1.8 update on pc has made a bit of a difference to the force feedback and i think a lot more people are now on board with the feeling of this and generally speaking i think it's probably one of the best experiences out there in terms of the driving itself just because they've obviously focused on nailing the gt3 cars and every different gt3 car has its own unique characteristics that match the real car which i love they don't all feel like the same car with a different body on them they all feel different and you really have to learn the nuances of each of them to really get the most out of them so it takes a lot of time to build your pace up and stuff like that you can't just jump in and be really quick straight away and talking about version 1.8 that is the other important thing to note here acc is still being developed it's still being improved there are still tweaks coming and the game is still becoming better and better every month it's utilizing the latest technology the latest kunos developments whereas assetto corsa was obviously stopped being supported officially in 2018. okay modders and stuff can still make mods and improve things but they're on their own with it okay i've done a few laps now i think it's time we jump on the original seto corsa and see how it differs well instantly the sound is slightly different the textures of the circuit look different of course you can see the textures loading in front of me even though i'm on pretty high quality for all the graphics so it yeah it doesn't look quite as good it's fair to say but i mean feeling why is it instantly the fourth feedback does feel good the car feels planted i do feel like it's a little bit easier to get up to speed with a set of corsa things happen a little bit easier you can kind of just control the car a little bit more it's less understeery it's more just in a groove which actually does feel pretty satisfying going into turn one on our first flying lap late on the brakes get it in just get a little bit less detailed force feedback right on the limits of grip as you're going for the apex you're kind of guessing it a little bit more understeer through there i don't quite like the hud on this game as much as i do on acc it's not quite as clean it's harder to see things now you can customize things change the size of them and stuff but that doesn't really save it to be honest i've already made these as big as i can and they're just yeah this is not as modern but you have to understand this is an older game quite a lot older actually so it would make sense that things have moved on and improved for the newer title aside from the graphics downgrade the sound's not being quite as good and the detail not been quite as much it's still a phenomenal racing experience like this is huge fun i'm still driving a very nice gt3 car around a well-designed xanvert circuit and i can just blast around i could do this all day it's a lot of fun so the negatives there really aren't that many when i'm being totally honest it's strange doing these two games back to back because they are different and i don't i've never done this before where i've just jumped straight from one to another and honestly a set of corsa and the same combination is even better than i expected it to be it's closer in terms of its feeling to acc than i thought it was the one thing i would say about a lot of cars in this game and not necessarily gt3s is that they do feel a little bit floaty sometimes like there's a lack of grip they're very easy to slide you do a lot of drifting and set of course even when you don't mean to but this gt3 car surprisingly planted it's really not that bad but that's the thing about ascetic core so i can sit here and say oh well you know this this little detail wasn't quite as good or this little thing wasn't quite as good as acc but at the end of the day in acc you can't do this jump in an old ferrari the 330 p4 on this occasion and drive around yeah of course the nordschleife so you cannot do this on acc and that is why the original assetto corsa is a game that you definitely need because this kind of experience with a proper rig is hard to beat there's just so little down force such a nice a nice comfortable lack of grip but everything happens so lazily so you can chuck it around and you still know where the car is going to end up it's predictable the sound beats any gt3 car i've got to be honest [Music] it's it's so good try not lock them up tip it in just going to give it a nice boot full early get the back end going there we go [Music] it's very hard to have this much fun in a gt car with all the modern technology and that is not a slight on acc because it is brilliant at what it does and for online racing it's superb i can barely hear myself think right now because this car is so loud in my headphones and i do not care and i'm never going to complain about it you can just chuck it around you can pretend to be john cerse as much as you want and you're gonna have a blast with this and i don't care about the lack of that last little bit of detail that acc might have when i'm driving this car i just don't care there is no denying that both of these games are high quality titles one is an open book full of opportunity and the other an immersive and incredibly detailed simulation they both excel when it comes to luke's and the driving experience although both are flawed in certain areas those who enjoy ac want something shiny and new to sink their teeth into with upgraded technology whilst those who love acc continue to pray for more different series to be added and of course the nordschleife the reality is that's not going to happen what people really want is a combination of the two they want the driving experience and the quality of assets of course competition combined with the mod ability and the range of content of asceto corsa and that's what people hope assetto course of two is going to be like which comes out in 2024 that's the future though right now it's one or the other at any given moment we asked you lot on the traction community tab which title you preferred and interestingly you guys overwhelmingly voted for competizione i think this boils down to two main factors firstly acc is the newer game utilizing the latest technology content and updates and secondly the fact that we've produced a lot more acc content on the channel such as my ultimate guide series means that we have a larger subscriber base of acc fans it might be a surprise to you then that it's actually the original assetto corsa that has a larger active player base according to official steam charts and the gap is considerable for me personally it's very difficult to say which one i prefer i've been a massive assetto corso fan since day one of early access but it was actually a set of course competizione that reignited my passion for sim racing during the first stages of lockdown in scotland in some ways it's because of acc that i'm talking to you guys and girls today but when all is said and done when i'm just looking to blow off some steam and drive an epic car around some of the world's greatest playgrounds the original assetto corsa puts a smile on my face that can't be wiped every single time that brings to an end our comparison video what we would like to know is whether you are more excited about acc on next gen consoles or assetto corsa 2 in 2024 be sure to stick your claim in the comments section below subscribe to the traction channel for more racing game content like this and ring the bell to catch your videos as they're released until next time thanks for watching keep it pinned and have a great day [Music] [Applause] [Music] me
