and i noticed that it was i think i believe looking back in the seventh inning it was nine to one or sixth inning and woody stole second base and the next pitch was under your chin do you think he threw at you yeah he definitely did because all right listen to the story here pete stole first i mean stole second and then the other coach was yelling at deep he's like that's not good and the catch is going that's real beep classy and he's saying all this stuff so i'm up there and then he throws one right in my head and this kid's got pretty good control so i'm not gonna charge or anything i mean we're about to win the state championship i just you know wanted to let him know that i knew what he was doing [Music] i'm dave porton i founded bar stool sports 2004 so i've been running it now for about 14 15 years dave portnoy is known to millions as el presidente not the president of a country but instead of a mindset he is founder of barstool sports of course he joins us tonight grew up in uh swampscott so north shore massachusetts middle class upbringing says not lin um it's not marvel head marblehead would say the only reason god created swampscott was to keep the liners out of marblehead so it was a very middle-class town typical town north shore town this is my sour cream cake i think we're trying to sell it for 20 dollars total sales too and no one paid for it it was a great place to grow up david was into sports all his friends were sports people and they'd play for morning till night when he was younger he'd go out in the backyard and his father would play ball and catch and he knew then he thought he had a superstar so i used to say to my wife all the time it seems to me he's good but i don't know what maybe there are other seven or eight year old kids that are the same or better he was good but there were a lot of other kids around here that were exceptional too and they were all together and that's why in baseball he played baseball mostly they were very successful because they were good [Applause] [Music] [Applause] top of the seventh come back with two outs and win the game an unbelievable accomplishment we moved in when david was three days old he knew nothing else but this house his neighbors his friends they all live within walking distance all the schools within walking distance and it was just a great neighborhood you could leave kids out and let them play all day long and not worry about them when he played pop one i i never saw anything like it he 71 said to me that their friend came over told our friend that they just saw the greatest football player they ever saw he never swore he never drank he never did anything um i guess that's changed growing up you know nationally as a cool kid so my friends were like [Music] probably a popular clique like sports and all that jazz this todd what a hairdo he had he looked like such a weird todd mcshank yes and there's peter is david with his bowl i don't know dave and i were born our parents tell us in the same hospital salem massachusetts on the same day about 10 12 hours apart probably known him since i was five years old he and i were the odd couple we were always like grumpy or old men you know we were always at each other with very different personalities and i think that kind of made it fun our group of friends growing up are really close we remain really close to this day i mean we spend time in nantucket together we go on trips together we we're always in contact if you farted in his basement you were thrown in the egg he had like this egg i refuse i never went in and we always thought about that but everyone else was like all right you know i'm gonna take my punishment it's like you know i i got fined i got fined for farting and i'm gonna go in and he would like enforce it if everyone was told to wear black cleats he showed up in white he is basically the same person he was when he was 11 10 11 years old when i would say something to him do this and do that he always had an answer if he didn't want to do something he always had an answer i might have not agreed with it but he would say things that even at that age there weren't outrageous answers i didn't agree with them but they you know they they you know it was difficult to deal with in that sense because he would say things that i would have to think about before i would respond because they made sense portnoy would go on to be a four-year varsity player for the swampscott high school baseball team rumors around the north shore were that he had faster hands than delino de shields i would describe myself as a dominant high school baseball player we probably lost like three or four games my entire high school career i played freshman year through senior year won the triple crown i think two-two pitch hit high in the air to right center field it's a long run they're not going to get this ball it's all the way back against the fence woodworking held up to see what's going to be caught he's going to score easily though and portnoy does it again and uh the field down here uh when he was in high school was a short uh right field thing so he hit home runs he hit line drives and it was you know it was a short thing and it was a short distance dave hit a couple home runs over that fence that i can remember now i don't know how many he hit the next year that you're out but he played regular and uh he was like i said earlier he's at the top of the order david uh was a sophomore on the class of 93 that we were fortunate enough to win the state title brendan nolan with the play the gloves go in the air and swampscott celebration begins [Music] a five-hit one-run game thrown by kevin rodgers as swampscott has won the state championship in division three and the pi we hope nobody gets right out there every coach would like to have a guy like him on your team but he kind of kept things loose made me laugh i used to like i used to like some of the things he did i mean it made me laugh he always had something to say always had something to say you know you don't take too many pitches yeah well in uh little league and when i was like 13 i kind of took pictures all the time and i got in trouble i struck out kind of a lot so i had to get away from that now i just swing at everything pretty much he comes from a family that academic achievement is very essential very important his mother is a teacher at the school and his father's a lawyer and they're real good citizens and they're good people you know they get in with people real well so he comes from a very good background that achievement is important i'm going to daze here i don't know what i'm going to say that i'm very proud of david and it's a wonderful feeling that i have proud of both my kids my whole family and i'm going to have a wonderful time this afternoon like i said he always had something to say and then we won the state title and uh we were we were up by five runs later in the game so he gets up in the bottom of the sixth end i believe in the sixth inning [Music] so he takes one step and i yelled out you're on your own brother and that something he would do all the time he would do something to that effect enjoy it to the belt the one-two pitch hit high in the air deep to right field avalo going way back it's out of here a home run for david portnoy he got all in that one footnoy got all of that one as avalo ran out of it i'll say this all joking aside he legitimately did peak at 12 and never really got better at anything except he could rake he could hit he lost strength in his arm and of course he also says that his he was had a terrible mechanics of throwing and guess who he blames for that me it's my fault portnoy would follow in his sister's footsteps and go on to attend the university of michigan so my sister was a senior when i was a freshman um and i used to visit in high school and be like oh this place is awesome well we took him to a lot of schools because we thought he was going to play baseball he actually uh got an offer at bucknell he could have played you know i told him i i think you're making a mistake here he got accepted to the nursing school unfortunately he had not applied to the nursing school i was like okay i talked to my sister who went there i'm like if i go to nursing can just transfer from nursing to the normal school she's like yeah once you're in you can do whatever you want portnoy graduated with a degree in education he did not see himself following this career path but simply just wanted to get his degree big brains doing big brain things the student teaching i hated i had to be up early i think it was almost my last semester i was basically working like a high school shift so i had to be up super early so no i ate i knew i was never gonna be a teacher he would he of course he wouldn't call hardly at all but when he did he would always start you'll never guess what happened and that wasn't they got an a and a course trust me it was usually some kind of crazy thing you know uh i lost my keys again so i think he started a climb to get into the room from outside the building you know he missed his finals he missed the flight home for vacation much to his father's chagrin portnoy got into gambling at an early age little league there was one of the coaches was a bookie and i always loved the horses and he loved them too and of course he loved to gamble very early on unfortunately and kentucky the kentucky derby's dead and kentucky derby was running and they were down at the field and he'd been looking at it at the horse i think the name of the horse was smartie jones i might be wrong about that and it was a long long shot and he gave the assistant coach like 20 bucks on the horse and got nipped by a nose came in second but if it had come in i could see the guy looking at the guy's face he was just the coach he didn't even put the money in he just figured this kid doesn't know what he's talking about and it would have cost him like 3 400 bucks for for a five dollar bet or something it was something crazy but already at that point he was he he's very early on that appealed to him and unfortunately still does today i mean i've been a degenerate gambler my whole life the first website i actually started in college was thegamblingman.com what a great url yeah like little fireworks and stuff all over it i get my picks out on a daily basis the gamblingman.com it's quite a thing so i met dave through a mutual friend todd mcshea todd was always nervous uh having us meet because we were so similar it was basically a blind date we met at a bar in boston on canal street and we met for the for the 12 o'clock games and we stayed there all the way through like you know the late night games in the mac like we were down in newport and uh we went to highlight we're the only ones in there uh so whatever whatever type of gambling we did it and uh ever since we've been pretty good friends he was in boston he spent he'd go into brooks brothers he'd go into every expensive store and as much money as he made and it was six figures even then i pretty cool he'd spend everything spent the whole year and the rest went to gambling i always said to my wife you were 10 11 years old this kid is not going to work for anybody you don't get a good employee who is questioning every single thing that the boss tells him to do he's making i don't know 90 100 000 selling medical supplies or software or whatever he was doing and then he just quits all right promise big deliver big what do you think it fits isn't that it's true that's how we live i don't know about the delivering big prom is big certainly there are three ideas that i picked from before i chose barcelona sports next step scouting that was the name of the scouting agency where it would match lower tier athletes with coaches looking to fill you know spots for various sports and the other one was a furniture company you know how at the end of college everyone just throws that furniture on the side of the street and throws away i want to warehouse it and then resell it and then the other idea is barcelona sports which at the time was just a fantasy sports gambling idea say i'm just i don't want to work for the man i'm going to do my own thing and we thought he was crazy i mean i i can remember sitting there in that living room being like dave don't don't do this or at least like start it to keep your job he's like nope i gotta go all in i'm gonna go all in offshore sports books which i gambled with said they would advertise if i had a newspaper or a physical handout when i chose between the scouting company the furniture company and bar stool bar still seemed the most realistic to get off the ground because i knew i could get this advertising so that's why you're not the [ __ ] beetles you're [ __ ] summertime at the stool which means we have idiotic interns you didn't put the scissors in the ac no i did i i've admitted to that you didn't touch me i didn't touch the ac didn't even lay a finger on it remember the sports website that posted naked pictures of tom brady's young child [ __ ] fine if you guys want me to run for mayor i'll run for mayor we're going to uh a nearby park we're going to run the 40. so we're down the park we've got obviously espn talking shea draft expert so we're going to do the barcelona combine weird haircut seth i just found out says he can throw a football 60 yards oh what an idiot what a [ __ ] idiot weird haircut i'm gonna kill him i don't have a choice i came here to kill somebody total flopper and everything that he says about lebron he does i'm a walking paralyzer you're a bum you have one class case has barcelona out of those gates 500 yards they're gonna wish they you know never invite me today is the big hand of my convention in boston biggest anime convention in the northeast so feats and i uh fight and the big bad bully wins again what do you get when you guzzle down come on did you do it simon sorry come on you did it did you you [ __ ] did it you did it you did it it's actually [ __ ] lyrics it you think rape is funny no i didn't say that i think it's a funny joke do you understand how offensive that is no i obviously don't 2014 abn's las vegas reporting hard hitting news the
