The crewless B-17 Ghost fortress that landed itself

[Music] [Music] it was the 23rd of November a fairly calm evening for the Royal Air Force anti-aircraft unit who was stationed Dayanara at base in Katzenbach Belgium I love know where this were massive 5,000 pound P 17 G Flying Fortress head straight for them almost as if it had a paid off in air the Union recalls seeing the landing gears of the Flying Fortress being done and the plane traveling at very high speeds they had thought the plane was heavily damaged from the way he was coming down this was an unscheduled landing approach naturally they assumed it to be an emergency landing and the or EF crew prepared for it barely avoiding a crash the Flying Fortress flew post anti-aircraft guns and landed successfully in a nearby field with minimal damage the propellers of the plane had snapped off during the landing and flung into the air violently but free of the four engines were still running the Royal Air Force as well as the witnesses weight is holding their breath expecting a railroad crew to emerge from the b-17 Flying Fortress they waited along 15 minutes and nothing had happened twenty minutes had passed by this point and made john crisp orderly's crew too carefully with caution approached a mystery b-17 Jeep they had just appeared off in air and landed beside them the b-17g was of course an American aircraft and the bridge unit did not know how to enter the aircraft at first by eventually the major found and opened the hatch entering alone crisp admitted that he was incredibly nervous what would he find inside upon entry he made the most astonishing discovery there was no crew inside a b-17 G typically had 10 crew members yeah he had found almost a dozen parachutes that were wrapped neatly ready for use this makes the mystery of the missing crew on this unmanned ghostly b-17g even more mysterious the b-17 Jake used a Sperry bombsight which was found on damaged wrapped in its original perspex nose of the cover missing at the navigates his desk he had found a code book which contained the letters as well as the college East for identification in the codebook to crew a train bad flag but upon inspection there was no flag cause or damage whatsoever apart from the damage from the landing itself bomber crews had to wear fake fur jackets the day of the core temperatures at high altitude these jackets alongside balls of half-eaten chocolate was found on the fuselage floor this indicate the signs of recent life he turned off all free running engines and there was nothing that raised concerns within the cockpit the plane seemed to have flown itself and landed itself with no human assistance whatsoever usually b-17 G's had always been given a unique name between the crews but this one did not have a name adding to the mystery this plane was given the name phantom fortress by the media later on investigators look for the serial number and found it to be part of the 91st this was a bomber group that operated over East Anglia over England the plane took off of its crew but where did they go this was the question had the jump Tower of no equipment to their deaths amazingly the crew was found soon after all ten safe and sound an airbase based in Belgium they have been assigned to bomb an oil factory in Murs burg Germany left turn and Depot who was the pilot of the b-17g was an experienced pilot the plane was at low altitude as they stored the bombing run and the German flag had soared opening up the Germans has successfully hit the PSM dingy in the bomb bay as well as in one engine luckily none of the bombs actually went off the weather at this time was a turbulent on unfavorable leftenant Deebo had given the engines as much power as he could but the heavy damage b-17g was torrential his altitude he ordered his men to throw all the unnecessary equipment out of the plane but it didn't help the plane was still losing altitude another engine at this point had stopped working due to overheating and so we decided that we best ditched a plane he turned the plane towards Brussels Belgium and told his crew to get the parachutes ready to bail leftenant Depot being the last one to leave said the PSM dingy the autopilot by modern standards despairing a free autopilot that I used was primitive no capable of landing or taking off but level flight the crew had no idea what would happen to the plane with tear running engines I had a very smooth Honda staying in the air naturally they assumed that it would simply crush Tyrone this was what the crew had told the investigators what actually happened was that the b70 G flew one four miles with half its engines and landed itself and allied airfield how did the plane go home for so long in the turbulent level and landed itself was a mystery nobody understood how the plane managed to do it in fact when the b-17g landed the Karuna ground saw no previous damage to the plane whatsoever whoo four engines were working and even had the landing gear down one engine was damaged upon landing but the other three was still running the b-17 G's engines are known for kicking back to life after cooling down but the crews claims of enemy fire did not make any sense no a single parachute that the plane took off with was used and the hardest part of flying a plane which is the landing also makes little sense he would put the landing gear down Howard all the Crucified were using any parachutes to tell the story there are many theories to answer these questions but the best one would be that this was all due to coincidence the bomber lost weight with the crew leaving the plane the two engines kicked back to life and the plane lost altitude at the right angle and speed for a landing with the help of the autopilot jarl as for the crew surviving well diese parachutes there has no explanation the story remains one of the strangest and most mysterious things to have happened during World War two please do check out my other history
