hey guys welcome back to the channel so this is more fan footage and today's race was sent in by jura who is a 16 year old from wisconsin and this is the project echelon criterium the cat 4 5 field but uh don't let that fool you actually because jura is really strong he's even at 16 years old he already has a cat cross country mountain biking background and he sent me some notes so let's see he's 61 kilograms he has an ftp of around 248 watts and a high max heart rate 203 beats per minute which is pretty common for youngsters like jira he's on the bicycle doctor team and which is this uh this high vis yellow kit that um you can see right here and he came with one teammate who was actually also new to this sport i guess that's no surprise again this is the cat 4-5 field but his teammate's name is ryan and he comes from a triathlon background specifically swimming so both these dudes are strong they have endurance sports in their background but criterium racing is pretty unique it's not like a sustained effort like in a triathlon for example so i imagine that ryan might have some difficulty in this race but let's find out and before we we jump into it i just wanted to also mention that jura specifically mentioned there was one team that had pretty good organization and a lot of riders in this race and they're in this blue and black kit and they are pete's garage okay i was skipping ahead but i had to stop here do you guys see what i see that rear wheel is terrifying he'll actually end up crashing later but we'll get to that trust me hang in there guys you are not going to want to miss the finish of this race so here's a quick reminder to maintain your equipment and don't forget about free laps guys free laps existing crits for exactly this reason all right here we are about 27 kilometers left in this race still in the first half and you can see that there's a pete's garage rider taking a flyer off the front and this is exactly what you don't want because when the major team has a rider that rolls off the front think about it you know his eight teammates are no longer going to be contributing to the pace and they're certainly not going to chase back their teammates so you're his teammate ryan real smart he positioned himself well and remember they're in this um this high viz yellow jersey he also makes a big effort off the front to chase the pete's garage rider and here we go the first victim of this cat 4-5 field i don't know what happened here he just got that corner wrong but doesn't bode well for the rest of the race okay so now imagine you're jura you have your teammate who is off the front with by the way a member of the main competition so this is like the dream situation because now you get to sit back you don't have to worry about setting the pace on the front you don't have to worry about chasing this group back you can enjoy the draft which by the way jira is not doing a fantastic job of being in the draft right now but that's the whole point is you get to sit in the draft you get to save energy while your teammate is off the front but instead this drives me crazy he he decides that he's going to just basically chase his teammate back so right here he's he just puts his head down and he just starts smashing so think about it like jura is getting tired making this really hard effort passing these tired riders to get up to his teammate who is in a potentially um race-winning position and he's dragging the whole field with him so you know none of this makes sense because euro's probably gonna gonna make it across it looks like he's going to and he's um he's leaning a lot on his uh on his cat one cross-country mountain biking fitness but the problem now is is jura is tired and his teammate ryan is tired so this they're very susceptible right now to a big counter attack because if i was like a pete's garage guy this would be the moment to pull it off i just got pulled across by jura in his draft and there's all these tired riders on the front this is the moment for a counter attack alright so they get pretty lucky in about another five kilometers passes without too much action and then there's another pete's garage rider who decides to take yet another flyer off the front and same story as before jura and ryan cannot let pete's garage get away with an attack like this and establish a gap because if if this rider establishes a gap off the front then what's going to end up happening is jira and ryan are going to have to do chasing on the front you never want to have to do chasing so instead you want to nip it in the bud and that's exactly what jura is doing right here and i like that he's kind of taking turns with his teammate i like a couple of things about this number one he's taking turns with ryan ryan took the last one and then juror is taking this one and then the other thing that i liked is jira came from from further back in the field so he came past all those front riders with a lot of speed and what that means is you're not just towing the whole field which you could do i mean you could just tow the whole field and bring back this pete's garage rider but jarrow wanted to join a breakaway he made that really clear in his notes he wanted to get into a breakaway so this was a really good opportunity for him to do that but he actually ended up bringing two other riders one of which was his teammate so i don't know how that worked out um i'm gonna give jira and ryan the benefit of the doubt and say that ryan didn't chase jira back like what happened in the last clip but without a rear camera we just don't know for sure and at least if he did chase jura back he only brought one writer with him he didn't drag the whole field so in any case this is a breakaway of four that looked really good and jura and ryan actually committed to it actually they probably over committed to it if you look at the amount of time that they spend on the front in comparison with these other two riders in this breakaway they were really getting after it and again i think this comes back to the fact that both jura and ryan have a very solid endurance background they come from another endurance sport and they were just smashing they wanted really wanted this breakaway to work and they were willing to burn a couple of matches to give it a shot but unfortunately got brought back that's the fate of most breakaways so let's see how how they rebound from it and let's fast forward a bit all right we're inside of nine kilometers now and honestly this has become the the team pete's garage versus team bike doctor show not a whole lot's happened between the last clip and now it's time for jira to try once again and and i really like the timing of this attack i mean he probably didn't didn't need to spike up to a thousand watts to get his gap right there but everything about this attack is great it was up on this little hill it was coming into this technical section of the course i even liked the way he took this corner right here really really good curb to curb corner preserved all of his speed and now he's just going to lock it in to threshold effort here in a minute after he's established his gap and he's going to try his hand again because remember he wants to get away and he told me in his notes that his plan was to get away so the timing of that attack doesn't tell me that he it's a second crit that looked like he knew he was doing so um so kudos to that attack but unfortunately for jura it does not work out in the end he does get chased back which means his teammate benefits remember from being in the draft of these other riders who uh who chased jira back and i don't really know what jira is doing now he just kind of sits at the front and i'm not really sure why he's doing this i've talked about this in my other videos your position and your effort that you're making in a race needs to be deliberate there needs to be a reason behind it in other words you should always be able to answer this question if somebody asks you okay in this moment in a race what are you doing and why are you doing it and if you're at the front there should be a clear answer on why you're at the front spending unnecessary energy and i think if i were to ask jura in this moment why are you at the front i don't think he could give me an answer i can't imagine why he would be at the front right now i don't have an answer because he's just towing the whole field around inside the closing laps of the race in a moment when he should be saving his energy and either thinking about the sprint finish or thinking about another moment in the closing laps when he can try another breakaway all right last lap now jura finds himself out of position on the front again this time he's chasing this rider with just a couple of seconds gap off the front and boom ryan decides this is the time and i totally agree with your teammate on the front coming through a corner look at he just gets a gap almost immediately and these riders who are going you know three or four miles an hour slower just cannot get on his wheel get in the draft meanwhile jarrod please do not chase your teammate ryan okay good okay good just fall into line and now this is what you should be thinking about if if ryan gets caught that's when you do the counter attack so position yourself and be on high alert guys we're 700 meters to go so you should definitely be thinking about your position now you don't want to fall out of like the top 10 at this point i would be following these guys who were passing me and i would be in the draft a little bit better he's doing 600 watts up this hill oh the craziness begins the cat 4 5 last lap craziness begins now we're coming through the technical section and ryan's got some daylight so it looks like your teammate might be winning oh more craziness so now the gaps are opening up and this is why you don't want to be out of position in the last lap because now look basically the race at this point is over for jura he's just hoping that his teammate ryan can hold his gap off the front but but i like jira this kid's got some grit you know he doesn't quit he just keeps pedaling and then another crash in the final corner and check this out you guys aren't gonna believe it he carries all of his speed these slowing riders inside of like 200 meters to go he makes up i don't know five seconds and now he sees the finish line takes his opportunity oh you gotta love the craziness on this last lap ryan stays off the front takes the win go solo cause yolo and jura doesn't give up comes in with a full head of steam to take the field sprint per second owing his podium spot to the cycling gods that was an exciting last lap guys thanks for hanging in there and as always catch you the next one you got it good job ryan go turn up go go go nice job i have someone like hand wanted be is that you yeah i'm sorry that's all right tim the other guy in black
