They're spinning faster than the average blood bag mixer at my practice. And more ass going up and down than the average Cardi B concert.

Lol Sprinter- "Wow I feel good and these guys are slow! I feel so good that I'll just ride in the wind and on the outside by myself".

Then the sprint began. "Uh oh".

Remember in Madden when you make the 400lb 7ft tall, 50 year old quaterback in campaign mode?

...somebody did that here.

This looks like a recovery ride for me and my fellow men of the tooth, probably a chiropractor.

to jesus 211 212 beats per minute um i don't know how he's still alive hey guys welcome back to the channel this is some more fan footage sent in because i'm not racing here in california nobody's racing here in california so thank you for everybody who's sending me footage and allowing me to sort of live vicariously through you and enjoy this race content because damn i miss it really looking forward to getting back to it but let's talk about this category 4-5 race that john and his teammate peyton sent in this is the tills park criterium from st louis missouri and we're picking up action already inside of 10 kilometers to go we've jumped forward quite a bit and that's because there wasn't a whole lot to talk about early on in the race there's a rider off the front right now he's got about 20 seconds or so he's in a white jersey we're gonna see him pretty soon because the chase is on this uh maple wood cycling team right here on the left has been doing a lot of work to chase it back they are the big team in this race and they're kind of running out of steam at this point even though there's still a gap off the front to the solo rider and here you see you see peyton already doing work on the outside of this bend in the wind you never want to have to do that speaking of which peyton is the protected sprinter according to john's notes that he sent me so he shouldn't be doing any of this work john should be towing peyton around this order should be flipped around so you never want to be closing gaps like this if you're trying to save your legs for the sprint kind of makes sense right you're trying to save every less bit of energy for the end of the race but what they do here in a second is going to be really smart i'm from these two riders so maplewood still has a couple of guys on the front and um they're still trying to reel that one rider back and what john's going to do in a minute is he's going to come around his teammate and it looks like they're communicating here a little bit maybe he's telling him what he's planning on doing and he's going to help out this maplewood chase which is great i don't see this type of organization very often in cat 4 5 races but the idea here is john is sacrificing some of his energy to ensure that this breakaway gets brought back because he saw that the maple with these two maple wood guys were kind of running out of steam and maybe we'll get our first glimpse not quite yet but that one solo rider in the white jersey is just out of sight he is uh not far from the chasing field now so what i like what they've done is they've established their roles john and his teammate john is supporting peyton because they feel confident that they can win from the field sprint in in payton's ability and that is shown both in in john's notes that he sent me and also the way that they're racing so now john is confident he's chasing this back they have an interest in bringing this back for a field sprint that's why he's doing this effort on the front right now and then peyton is sitting back and resting his legs all right so after john's hero pull you can see that the white jersey is now like just a handful of seconds three seconds up the road and john's teammate peyton you can see him right here he jumps across that gap now i'm not sure i am very excited about this move if the whole idea is to save your legs for the sprint finish you don't want to roll the dice on a late race attack like this especially up to a rider who's been off the front since like the first couple of laps you can't really depend on him to really help you contribute to the breakaway effort very much i do like this attacking style of racing coming from these two guys but honestly i would have preferred john to be the one to close those last couple of seconds to the router in white and allow peyton to continue to save his legs for the sprint finish all right well i was wrong it's about a kilometer later and you can see that gap is growing look at the two riders off the front they now have like maybe five six seconds and this u.s military rider on the left john's really smart to see this attack going he jumps on it see the thing is is like this u.s military guy is seeing this uh this gap open up with now five and a half kilometers to go we're right near the end of the race guys and this is when the panic sets in people start thinking like oh the race is getting away and i might be losing the race here in the last couple of laps so this is a great opportunity for john to sit on this wheel which he's doing and he gets a free ride up to his teammate and this is the beauty of teamwork so now um he is doing a significantly less amount of work than this u.s military rider while his teammate is still maintaining a gap off the front and now this is when it gets interesting right because now we have some teamwork dynamic going on and the real question is what does john do once he gets across this gap with the us military guy because if the plan is still to protect peyton's legs for the sprint finish well they he needs to think about how what he can do to support that no matter what because now they're coming through what did that say four laps to go there's um less than five kilometers to go and he needs to do whatever he can at this point to make sure that peyton is positioned well and saving his legs for the sprint finish so i'm going to pause it right here because i want to talk about this opportunity maybe you guys see it i definitely would be thinking about this inside line right here think about it these three guys that we can see in frame tired tired tired and your teammate needs a rest for the sprint finish he's positioned really well right now but you need to take the pressure off and this is your golden opportunity if you're john this is your chance to sneak away you've just gotten a free ride up to the front of the race there's less than five kilometers to go you need to jam it through this inside line i mean the timing couldn't be any better you see that suv up the road try to catch that suv that's all you're thinking about put your head down get a gap you're going to be doing your teammate peyton a huge favor you're going to be doing yourself a huge favor you're going to be putting yourself in a two potential winning positions as a team but the counter-attack never comes john go for glory man catch that suv oh that's so hard to watch because you like he's taking the inside line right now too but he's just kind of sitting there in the wind i'm i'm pretty pretty sure that move could have worked right there like nobody wants to chase in the last um five kilometers of a race everyone thinks they're a sprinter especially cat four five everybody thinks they're a sprinter with five uh with four laps to go but um yeah there goes the us military guy goes again so now they're in kind of this weird position but anyway um it was at this point in the notes that john told me that he was going to attempt to navigate his teammate peyton up to the front for the field sprint so let's fast forward a bit and see how he does there all right so what's the best way to lead out your teammate for a sprint in the last couple of laps of a criterium well you have to stay together obviously what you're the idea is is you're benefiting each other and you're looking out for each other's best interests so the first thing i would and you have to look out for sketchy writing like that the first thing i would be doing is looking out for other teams that are organizing towards the front especially teams with more people so in this case it's the united rentals team who have a number of guys up towards the front here one of which is that guy with long hair who just made a really sketchy um left-hand turn and he keeps looking down at his stem or something if you guys can see that um it's like he's looking at his power meter or something don't do that that's something that you shouldn't be doing in the last couple of laps is looking down at your power meter but i did catch a glimpse of peyton just off to john's right it looks like peyton wasn't in john's draft and they should be thinking about organizing now with uh two and a half k's to go and it does look like jon is looking over his right shoulder he's looking out for his teammate peyton yep there he is okay so this is the first glimpse that we've gotten of peyton in a while so this is good now they found each other the one thing i would do is is get the order different here i would make sure that peyton's behind me not in front of me because remember guys peyton is the protected sprinter they're doing more communicating i like that again something that you don't see too often two laps to go now so we're getting right towards the end of it i would stay away from this united rentals guy with the long hair on the left take a look at him he just keeps looking down at his computer i mean he's already almost crashed once and rule number one keep your eyes forward if you guys missed that crash video i posted i'll link it right now but this is the reason why you don't want your sprinter in front of you look at them in the wind going the long way around this corner that might not seem like much but that was a pretty big effort that payton unnecessarily did here with with uh two kilometers to go he needs to be saving every ounce of energy especially as the speed starts to pick up and this would be a good opportunity i think they still need to switch positions here because okay okay maybe they're doing it yep this looks better their position in the peloton by the way is fantastic and now it looks like they are um they are positioned correctly with john in front of peyton and man just still mr longhair in front sketchy mr longhair in front of him um but this is looking good i mean outside corner outside line through these corners yeah it kind of sucks but this is the reason why the leadout works is you have a guy to protect you in the case that you have to take a less than ideal line to maintain your position or you have to maybe eat a little bit of wind that's what john is doing for peyton right now he's sacrificing his legs if you're the lead guy you shouldn't be thinking about your individual results anymore it is about positioning your sprinter as best as possible for the finish of the race and i can i can see john keep looking back for his teammate peyton but oh right here i don't yeah they're moving up too early like you don't want to be at the front with 1300 meters to go that is way too far for just one lead out guy so i liked his position before um and i know it's just like one or two positions that we're talking about but it makes a big difference in the end because you cannot go for um 1100 meters by yourself and string the field out now this is the reason why is now when things start to really pick up in speed which is you can see it's happening right now on the left with those attacks that are going this is why this is why you want a draft when it gets really fast like this that's what oh my god the terrifying long hair guy comes barging up the left but when he gets really fast like this this is when you really want to draft this is when it matters the most and you don't want to be stuck on the front with 1100 meters to go because that is just too far to hold your position your sprinter in the correct position and it's right about now we're closing in on 700 meters to go that jaw needs to think about getting his sprinter patent right up towards the front maybe position two or position three 600 meters to go it's now or never john needs to move up and really empty the tank and take that outside line and yep there goes peyton so peyton is like all right well i guess it's on me now and he he needs to get behind that rider and orange because that's the right wheel but instead he just he just starts smashing in the headwind the long way around this corner none of it really makes any sense to me it looks like he's going for a long sprint but he didn't have a big pop a big punchy acceleration because if you're going for a long sprint like that you need to establish establish a gap right away anyway john's work is done to jesus 211 212 beats per minute um i don't know how he's still alive but he did a good job to position john he could have done a slightly better job especially in the last kilometer to position john in that ideal kind of third or second wheel but let's jump over to peyton's footage and see how he fares in the sprint all right coming through one lap to go you can see jon right in front of us here with the helmet cam and the first thing i noticed is peyton spends a lot of time out in the wind here kind of for no reason he's a little bit sloppy he should be um much tighter on his teammate john's wheel you can see he's letting other riders take that draft and now he's taking the outside line in the wind and i wish he had power data to support this but take my word for it guys he's using a lot of energy right now kind of unnecessarily should be on his teammate's wheel that's the whole point of the lead out and this is where we're at that spot i mentioned from john's camera about 700 meters to go where john should be guiding him towards the front of the race right now and really emptying the tank to get peyton right in the correct position and because of that hesitation this is where peyton says well i guess it's up to me and um he comes flying on the outside here in the wind and really what he should be doing is getting in the draft of this rider and the orange or maybe that rider the front rider in the blue but i mean look how much time he spends in the wind taking the outside line this is basically his sprint right now and he still has 350 meters to go and this is why it doesn't work a long sprint like this could work if you get a big acceleration and get a gap off the front but instead what he did is he just towed the front riders and basically did a lead out i mean a sprint guys a sprint's supposed to be like maybe 12 or 14 seconds you can't do like a 30 or 40 second sprint like he's doing right now and um and yeah he's basically let out these other riders who you see are now passing him with still 85 90 meters to go and it looks like he's gonna roll in for fifth place um oh actually sixth place one more rider right at the line pips him but hey sixth place not so bad right john and payton are both strong enough to win this race to be honest so i think if they just brush up on their strategy some of their line choices they'll be crushing in their next race so hey thanks again for sharing guys thanks for hanging in there as always catch you the next one
