hey what's up brian oh jeff i didn't notice you there how you doing i'm doing well how are you not bad man excited to do some more commentary yeah who do we got today do you remember do you remember barnaby yeah it's the mate from down under right that's him yeah he sent us some more footage excited to get into it yeah let's get at it man boom [Music] yeah so barnaby sent in the talen ben motorsport park round five of the super series so this is an omnium race uh he's currently in the omnium leader's jersey so they're trying to defend that first and foremost barnaby as a reminder is on team port adelaide cycling club p-a-c-c these black and white kids and just brian dude just check out this course look at the map in the bottom right yeah it looks like uh whoever's drawn that might have had a seizure while they were drawing it which is always really exciting to see for some fast fun racing for sure it's dynamic right yeah super smooth roads right it's a racetrack it's meant for motorsports so when you get a bike on there um you get to rip these corners really fast they're wide it just makes for really dynamic racing i love it we don't get enough opportunities to race our bikes on on motor motorsport tracks i guess is what they call them motorsport parks in uh in down the land down under so um yeah so so barnaby's in the leaders jersey priority number one him and his team want to preserve that lead so that being said barnaby's their sprinter they want to protect him at all costs from using any unnecessary energy through this race and basically deliver him in the draft at 200 meters to go with as much energy as possible that's the whole plan of a lead out secondary goal is to get milo m-i-l-l-o millo i don't know his teammate's name sorry about that to get him the intermediate sprint points um which we'll get to in a minute here so there's some some intermediate sprint points on offer which his teammate is contesting that competition as well so uh they have all the major teams out here this is a big field um some former national time trial champions this is like a seriously fast field i'm excited to get into the footage um did i miss anything brian no i think that's it let's see you know as a self-proclaimed sprint opportunist here let's see uh how that sprint train works out for him all right four laps in you guys 25 kilometers to go we have sprint points coming up in about a kilometer and remember milo and the blue helmet if you guys can see somebody in the rear camera peeking through here in a second that's milo so so brian this is usually your job this guy's swinging out to the left here tell me what is how do you execute this lead out for sprint points yeah i think you know one of the first things to note is one how hard barnaby is having to push here and that was due to you know navigating through the group as the lead out was starting and i think that that first rider of barnaby's teammate he needs to kind of wind it up a little bit slower and not hit it nearly nearly as hard as as hard as he did i would say maybe add like 50 watts every 5 seconds and kind of diesel it to bring it up to speed um but because they they pushed it so hard and they didn't even check to make sure um milo was on their wheel and he's not yeah it's a this is a big problem and and instead barnaby is which is a bit weird because barnaby's the protected sprinter he had to do like a thousand watts to cover that attack by his teammate and i'm just trying to figure out like what the logic here is i would say on the bright side as they're about to pick up all of the sprint points they're going to go one two three clean up all the sprint points from their competition so that's nice but like yeah organization is cool and all and it seems like the port adelaide boys have that down but it's like they're forgetting the most important part where where's the intermediate sprint points guy milo nowhere to be seen yeah it seemed like it seemed like it was one of those things where you know usually you try to kill two birds with one stone but they killed no burns with two stones so yeah i've never heard a foot that way but that's a good point and now it looks like barn if he's gonna roll a hard turn like 400 500 watts like i don't really understand like barnaby's strong that's what this means and maybe a little bit inexperienced he's uh shouldn't be rolling turns on the front right now as the protected sprinter brian we are inside two laps to go getting close to the end of this race barney's up towards the front in good position now check out these rokit guys rocket broke it not sure these two guys talking to each other every time guys anytime you see this happening red flags something's gonna happen yeah they didn't exactly they didn't exactly try to hide this one so yeah this is kind of predictable you can see him starting to wind it up on the right cadence goes up okay so i want to get your hot take on this brian you have barnaby the protected sprinter chasing this back spending all sorts of energy should he be doing that yes and no so so the answer is yes there's somebody that has to be there but no it probably shouldn't be barnaby um like we said like there's so many red flags when a teammate comes up and taps you on the shoulder like that should be something like all his teammates should have been like oh red alert but the reality was they weren't there to respond and so now barnaby's on the front you know chasing moves down yeah he seems like he's kind of indecisive he's not really pulling hard right now i think he's probably checking back for his teammates because i'll just echo what you said like his this is his teammates responsibility to to follow that move and prevent this situation from happening in the first place but they do get back together right like his teammates do execute a chase back but like man look at this it is just sloppy like they're not really rolling consistent turns barnaby's still up in this group like rolling turns with his teammates the whole point of the protected sprinter it's in it's in the title right it's protected sprinter barnaby should be saving all this energy that he's instead wasting right now that's my thought yeah and i think also like you know if one rider goes like is is that rider an a-list time trialist that could that can and has rolled away solo for 13 kilometers like if the answer is maybe or i don't know he's not going the distance by the solo with this stacked of a field so just let him go like i'm never going to respond to a single rider unless it's super technical super you know tailwind all of there's a far more challenging courses that you have to be aware of a single rider but on a wide open super fast course like this with 50 60 80 guys in this pack one rider's not getting away and now no that's a great point i was gonna say and the other thing is they tried to close it so fast and so hard you know i think the other thing is like if if you really are worried about that guy um if you bring him back too fast there's a good chance he could go back in the pack rest and attack again or somebody else could attack again so you might as well just like bring it back slowly take the if you're going to take the initiative take your time let them dangle yeah for sure all right um let's fast forward to the finish all right guys four kilometers to go about a half a lap and barnaby is the second wheel i don't know why he's second wheel this is not the place to be as a field sprinter you don't want to be up towards the front it's it's a waste of energy even though you're sitting in a draft you're not the first person cutting through the wind this isn't efficient up here and you're going to find out why in a second and also you got to be surrounded by your teammates barnaby sent us notes that said that you know he had a specific order of his teammates on how they're going to lead him out and they're going to organize you know this far out and it was pretty detailed and this is none of this is according to plan i would not want to be in this position as a field sprinter there's diminishing yeah like you said he's in the draft of a rider but there's diminishing returns if you're only behind one rider um there's a lot of other things that happen like every one of these little accelerations look at that 500 watts little push right right there yep you know although those little surges you get you feel when you're positioning man too right if you're a little further in the back slow is smooth and smooth as fast is that your expression that's exactly it well done jeffy yeah so slow is smooth smooth and fast um and you know ultimately when you're close to the front you're having to respond fast and it's just inefficient and then also on top of that there's kind of this washing machine effect right where you're so close to the front the guy in front of you dies because he's going super super hard and then some suddenly like two or three guys search surge by you um and then you have to surge to get on that and then and then they're going to blow up and then it's just rinse and repeat for the next 3k and i mean that's not you're at 100 over 180 beats per minute 3k out from the finish right like that's not a good size sick looking trek though isn't it how about that track yeah i'm i'm all for the tron bike yeah i'm all for the the all matchy matches no i i totally agree and like um i think another good way to think about it is if he's up towards the front and he's doing you know let's say he's doing like 600 watts for a couple of seconds and he's doing a bunch of like 100 watts well the average might be 250 which is reasonable but it's that's a totally different 250 than just averaging 250 like straight up when you're when you're mid pack and that's the benefit 250 mid pack is way easier than surges of 600 up towards the front even if you get to rest every once in a while it's just a it's just a matter of efficiency yeah and i think that you know at the end of the day i would always think about like front or rather back loading these efforts at the end of a ride like this and if you know there's places where you can coast if you just let the wheels go to begin with instead of coasting the next time around you just pick up the wheels you lost instead of doing 500 watts so you can kind of like it's basically the same thing as tail gunning right but you're doing it at the front of a pack so when a group searches by you instead of trying to jump on from position three like he is right now to position three again you you drift back to position 10. fall back a bit yeah i feel like he he if it seems like he um is compelled to stay like top three which you don't need to be like again right here over 400 watts with 1500 meters to go you don't need to be doing that yeah it's funny like adx came up and he jumped on them and then rokit came up and they took the front he jumped on them so it's like he's strong enough to be up here but it's still it doesn't just because he can doesn't mean he should yeah i mean and there's like what like 30 000 corners on this course and then which are already sprints and themselves coming out of and then he's sprinting in between those corners on the straightaways to get on the next search so he's like doing probably twice as many sprints as the next person and you know the reality is is also when you're switching from like lead out to lead out to lead out you're spending less time in the draft too it's not just like a matter of like re-accelerating yourself you're like there's a lot of time when he is not behind somebody else right yeah like right here he's fighting with this adx guy to get on his wheel but you know his teammate's not letting it happen and like let's talk about his teammates lead out like they're oh well here comes another teammate to the rescue i guess but like they took the front at 1 500 meters to go and then we're and then we're kind of swamped and they were already losing guys at you know 1200 meters to go so that like granted the timing of a lead out is really difficult it's really hard to execute it's good to see that they're that they're trying it they just need to practice the timing a little bit more because they're obviously strong enough to be up here yeah i just don't know why they weren't trying to surge like and eliminate the gaps or rather those down times that were happening like coming into that corner instead his teammate went on the opposite line that he did and now here he is having to close like five bike lengths to get on this teammate's wheel with 500 meters to go and then the teammate seems to be winding it up but you know it's it effectively was the same effort yeah it was too many two one bullet too many i think at the end of the day he's got a good position coming out of this final corner coming into like 200 meters to go um but like this was something i got this guy on the right yeah this was like a little bullet out of a gun right here and like i got launched dude i think like i got old yeah yeah just confirmed he crossed into another time zone for sure there like look at that i loved watching that guy sprint if that guy's got footage he could send it in too that was pretty fun to watch like he should probably she was probably doing exactly what barnaby should have been doing which is just like chilling all those little surges like whatever it's gonna be a field sprint like don't worry about it there's all these teams controlling it and closing those gaps down and barnaby closing those gaps down that guy was just like hold my beer and then he just unloaded on the on barnaby in the last 200 meters so um i am happy to say that barnaby does come back with some redemption footage that i'm excited to share on the channel but until then for myself and bald eagle brian larson we'll catch you at the next one go go go all the cats there go go go no laughing no laughing stone cold okay get get it out get it out right now good idea get all those laughs out right now
