Step-plane what are you doing?
The disaster was caused by a bomb going of in the flower shop in the airport. The bomb had been planted by terrorist who wanted independence of their island from the fascist Spanish regime under Franco. The bomb had by all accounts not been intended to cause many deaths and was only meant to draw attention from the rest of the world to the plight of the island.
Unfortunately the bomb going off caused authorities to divert planes to a minor airport on a different island that was not equipped to handle the load and where due to miscommunication the two planes collided on the runway killing more people than any other air disaster before and after until 9/11.
It was pretty fucked up.
