melee combat is essential in dark tide however it can also be confusing and a little overwhelming to those who have never played a game like this before which is why I'm here to give you the comprehensive melee combat tutorial for dark type for those that don't know me allow me to introduce myself I'm JTC live a long time content creator and Veteran of fat shark's other game vermintide 2. if you're wondering why I claim to be able to give you advice for a game that no one has had the time to master yet the melee combat in dark tide is very similar to that of vermintides meaning that the skill between the two are transferable and as an expert of the melee combat in vermintide I have already a lot of knowledge tips and tricks that also apply to dark type first let's start with the basics in melee combat you have three kinds of attacks light heavy and pushes light attacks can be performed by simply pressing left click while heavy attacks can be performed by holding left click and releasing it after a short amount of time when charging up a heavy attack you do not need to wait for the animation to fully finish you can release the attack after only a second or so of holding it down if you're looking to get really good at melee combat in dark tide one of the first things you should commit to your muscle memory is rapidly chaining your heavy attacks together as once you get good at that you can throw out heavy attacks just as fast as light attacks you are also able to shove your enemies by holding down the block button and pressing left click if you continue to hold left click you will do a special kind of attack called a push attack right after you shove which can range from incredibly useful to completely useless depending on the weapon for example the push attack on the Rashad combat ax is incredibly useful as it's a horizontal Sweep with some cleave making it the main way to hoard clear when using it the sapper shovels push attack however is just an overhead strike which has significantly less DPS than just spamming light attacks against an enemy and is pretty much never worth using every weapon also has a special attack which is bound by default to a button on your mouse similar to push attacks these range from useful to useless depending on the weapon unlike push attacks however special attacks do not consume stamina so depending on which weapon you are using its special attack could be a good way to fill in for a push attack or other kind of attack that you would be unable to get off in the moment for example the dueling sword special attack is a stab which is not as powerful as the heavy attack stab but is much faster if you're in a situation where you would need single Target damage but don't have the time to charge a heavy attack the special attack would fit that role perfectly light and heavy attacks have what are called attack patterns which is just a chain of two or three different kinds of attacks that differ depending on the weapon you are using for example the catachon Devil's claw sword has a light attack pattern of three attacks an upper right to lower left diagonal and upper left to lower right diagonal and then an overhead its heavy attack pattern is only two attacks though with a right to left horizontal sweep and then a left to right horizontal sweep these attacks will always come in the same order in their respective pattern and will never change now in order to get the most out of shoving you should work your shoves into your basic attack patterns how often differs depending on the weapon you are using in the situation that you are currently in But A good rule of thumb is to shove after every three to five light attacks or one to two heavy attacks depending on the melee weapon you're using you could either use the push attack or skip it and continue using basic light and Heavies for example if you're fighting a massive horde using the Rashad ax then it's a good idea to use its push attack but if you're using the sapper shovel then you'd probably want to skip it since it won't help you versus multiple targets now there is a way to skip certain attacks within an attack pattern in order to specifically get to and repeat certain attacks which is referred to as attack combos attack combos are used to chain together certain attacks to get the highest damage Potential from a weapon both in horde clearing and single Target damage attack combos change from weapon to weapon and can be as simple as spamming light in heavy attacks or as complex as chaining light heavy and push attacks all in one combo for example a good way to clear hordes using the catatron sword is to spam heavy attacks but the best way to clear hordes using psyker's Force sword is by chaining a light attack into a heavy attack then utilizing a block cancel to reset the attack animation back to the beginning block canceling refers to when you quickly tap the block button after a certain attack combo which resets a weapon's attack chain back to the start this is useful when a weapon's optimal attack combo is followed by one or more attacks that aren't very good as you can block cancel and Skip those attacks completely there are many kinds of terms that can and will be used within the community when it comes to attack combos so be sure to check out the description of this video as well as the pinned comment for a glossary of terms something else to keep in mind is that melee attacks can go through solid objects and walls which can be useful if you have to hide from ranged keep in mind though that this also extends to enemies who can and will hit you through solid objects let's briefly discuss blocking blocking is a great way to defend yourself from melee attacks but it does have some limitations ranged fire obviously cannot be blocked but overhead strikes from enemies also cannot be blocked while blocking you are able to block attacks from all angles include including directly behind you but depending on where you are attacked from you will lose a different amount of stamina the area directly in front of you and slightly to your sides is where you want to block all attacks since you will take the least amount of stamina damage which is referred to as your effective block angle any attacks that are blocked outside of this area will do double the stamina damage so be sure to block while within the effective block angle whenever possible the most important tool you have at your disposal in melee combat though is your Dodge Bound by default to spacebar dodging allows you to avoid attacks that would normally hit you in order to get the most out of dodging you should be dodging essentially 24 7 whenever you are engaged in melee combat but you should not be spamming it similar to how you should time your push attacks you should time Dodges after one heavy attack or two to three light attacks to get the most out of them also as an aside there are a lot of nuances in regards to both dodging and pushing when to do them when not to do them when to do one versus the other and so on and so forth sadly I cannot cover them all in this video since they would completely overtake it but be sure to keep an eye out for my Advanced dodging guide where I will cover dodging and pushing more in depth sliding can also be used to dodge melee and ranged attacks which can be done by pressing the slide button bound to control by default while sprinting however there is a second way to slide pressing Ctrl while in the middle of a a Dodge will cause you to slide in the direction you are dodging the distance you gain from this kind of slide is quite small but it does extend the duration of your Dodge and makes it much easier to dodge ranged fire and attacks that have a smaller Dodge window such as the mutant's charge sliding also does not consume stamina if you've spam slide while you sprint you can extend your effective stamina pull to Greater lengths allowing you to get much farther than you otherwise would in a short amount of time every holdable item in the game from ranged and melee weapons to grenades and objective items have different stats that affect your Dodge in two different ways the first of which is Dodge distance simply put every holdable item in the game Alters the overall distance you move whenever you Dodge in any direction generally things held in only one hand have a greater Dodge distance than things held in two all items have also what is called an effective Dodge count which will be referred to here on out as EDC this is a hidden stat for all holdable items that determines how many consecutive Dodges you can perform in a row before your Dodges become less effective once you hit the EDC of an item your Dodge distance will be cut in half and any subsequent Dodges you perform will further reduce your Dodge distance until it just becomes zero resetting your EDC to Max is very simple stop dodging for a brief moment and your EDC will reset by itself a few more miscellaneous notes regarding dodging some people would argue that the first thing you should do is rebind either your Dodge or jump key to a different keybind so you don't have a jump and Dodge on the same key but personally I think it's preferable to have them on the same key it's ultimately up to you though so experiment with both and see which one feels more natural to you whenever you dodge don't spam Dodge backwards this causes enemies to begin an ice skating animation that is pretty much impossible to avoid instead Dodge side to side and around groups of enemies you fight as this will almost completely prevent ice skating animations and allow you to control the groups you fight much easier finally a huge part of dodging in dark tide is understanding that Dodge works best with your melee weapon out attempting to Dodge with a ranged weapon out will make it much more difficult to dodge enemy attacks so if you find yourself getting hit with your arranged weapon out frequently be sure to switch to your melee and block that's pretty much all I have but here is one more tip from me to you while swinging any melee weapon horizontally you can extend the range of your attack's hitbox by dragging your camera as you swing listen to me when I say this all of this information is overwhelming but the more you do it and the more you practice the easier it will become becoming good at melee combat in dark tide is 100 muscle memory and once you get just the basics of the combat in your muscle memory it will become infinitely easier keep practicing and before you know it you'll be able to handle the hordes of Heretics without breaking a sweat thanks for watching if you enjoyed the video be sure to like And
