[Music] my dad always said he said if you can be successful on that stage in New York you'd be successful anywhere and the very first time I went there it wasn't just a game in the middle of May that was seventh game of the world series you better lights are the brightest right now you better step up and play [Music] [Applause] three two Atlanta as Chipper Jones connects for the leader [Music] you know it grew because for the longest time you know for Glavine and I we were in the West it seems hard to believe that the Braves are ever in the West and then once we went to the East New York became the team that it seemed like every year it was a nice rivalry that was developed it was in Osby it was big time I mean it was intense it was special and it was fun it was fun it was two teams that didn't like each other very much you know we were in the middle that run where we win a division every year the Mets were usually the team on our heels was fierce rivalry I mean they were good they were a good team they built their team solidly and strongly it was a kind of a monumental faceoff when the Mets in the in the Braves played it was just it was pure chaos whenever we go up there for three hours man you better have your earplugs because it was it was chaotic and you know for us kind of being in the middle of having the success that we were having we were an easy team to hate and then oh by the way you have this guy Chipper Jones it seems to go up there and do whatever he wants in their ballpark every time he goes there the 1o pitch swung on and driven to deep right Ocho up giving chase at the track at the wall that's a salami Chipper Jones with his second homer of the day and a grand slam breaks it wide open it was big for the our team and chipper they did not like Chipper Jones at Shea Stadium chipper in New York was a guy that they love to hate if I could put it that way [Applause] I think that as it progressed he had one or two good games and all of a sudden the Mets fans started to get me and now the crowd chanting Larry Larry which is the given name of Chipper Jones he hates to be called Larry people in New York are certainly not going to give anyone their due if they're a good player they're gonna do everything they can to try to take it down a notch those fans are pretty creative they'll find it I'll try to find a way to get under your skin and they do the homework we're calling Larry the whole thing was loud and clear Jojo standing in a band start the chair [Applause] remember us sitting in the dugouts at time going please people get the chant Larry going please cuz that irritated the heck out of him and as soon as they got Larry going chipper got going that Larry he got going hit in the air to right field did he get another one that goes Cedeno yes sir he got another one way up off the scoreboard I mean that ball was crushed he knew he was gonna hear it from the fans and he embraced it and went in there and every chance he got he did something to make them hate him even more free run right by Chipper Jones he strikes again at Shea Stadium that'll turn this game around it's 4-2 to Atlanta when that happened with the Mets Thornton with little Larry business and and everything it was kind of like come on come on it just made him play better really yeah I mean I think when you look back at it I think that's pretty obvious I mean it just it probably did him a favor a towering homerun and Chipper Jones just continues to stick that knife in the side of the Mets and their fans you know he wore him out and Shea and always played good in New York you know a kid rising to the occasion the big stage chipper could do that I think players who were who were confident and good and know that feed off of the negative energy that visiting ballparks give to the star players he fed off of that any and it made him a better player made him more competitive as best possible to do it there it's not like he just did it at home but to do it there and then almost rub it in everybody's face my name in his child Shea is like ownage that's that's like the definition of ownage [Music] I made his debut against the Mets in 1995 in his first major league home run at Shea Stadium against will see his Manzanillo to win a game and now he is it's the flushing stage for the final time this is one of my favorite pictures that we have it says Larry always yelled with respect and that says a lot about the fans in New York and that is one of my favorite pictures that we have of chippers career and it says always yelled with respect and chipper will tell you that he played there and beat them with respect [Music] you
