all right today we're going to be talking a little bit about music theory but this is super easy and it's going to help you make better chord progressions for your beats so this i'm going to be talking about the chord numbering system and how it relates to each scale basically every scale has a set of seven chords and each one of those chords gets a numbered value from one to seven once you start to sort of analyze and decode tracks you'll notice that the same chords are reused over and over because some chords work really well together so for this one i'm going to assume that you know the note values or the name of each note here so c d e f g a b c and all the sharps once you know that this becomes a whole lot easier and if you know how to count to seven it's even easier all right so if we take a look at a popular chord progression uh for this one i'm going to use internet money's lemonade uh just a nice chord progression that i really like it's four chords and i'm gonna break them down right now and then we're gonna put a number to those chords [Music] so instead worrying about what chords i played what you should be focusing on is the numbering system of where these chords lay in that scale so the chord numbering system it indicates a chord's position relative to the scale and key so once again every chord has a number associated with it for every scale so for instance i started on the one that's the one c sharp minor going down to the seven b major [Music] going down to the five g sharp minor going up to the six a major right so if we look at that numbered pattern i'm just going to write it down over here we have a one seven five six pattern but now you're probably wondering how do i even figure out what the chords are in the track well it's really easy you don't really have to do anything there are some plugins that will tell you what chords and the scale of the key or song that you're listening to but instead we can just use a bunch of free websites to give us that information so a site i like to use is called toonbat.com and you basically can type in any song and get the song key and tempo information right away as well as the camelot info for your djs out there so if i go and type in lemonade here right so internet money's lemonade comes up the key is c sharp minor but that only tells us the scale doesn't actually tell us the chord so what do we need to do now to figure out what the chords are so i would pull up another search over here i searched for internet money lemonade chordify i like to use this site over here and this actually tells you the chords in the track so right here we have a c sharp minor b g sharp minor and an a major so this is going to tell us the chords of the track but we still don't know the numbering system because that numbering system is extremely important because we can take that info and then apply it to any track we want to make in our productions because we'll start to learn what works okay the five to the six works the one to the five works a lot you know these types of these things you're gonna pick up along the way once you know this numbering system so we know that c sharp minor is the one because the scale is c sharp minor but we don't know what the b is the g sharp minor and the a major is so i would go ahead and search chords and c sharp minor in google first one that usually populates here in the search is from a website called piano dash keyboard dash guide dot com if you click that it'll give you the scale the notes in it and the chords in this scale and this is where you're going to figure out the whole numbering system right so it's going to give you all the seven chords in that scale so the c minor 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. so now if we go back to chordify and figure out the numbering system here c sharp minor c sharp minor is the one b major is the next chord so if we find b major on our chord chart here it is right here b major it's the seven g sharp minor is our next chord we find it in our chord chart right here it's the five and then a major find that in our chord chart and lastly that is the six and now you essentially just figured out what the chord progression is without caring about the chords just looking at the numbers from one to seven as you do this more and more to your popular tracks trying to figure out the chords and how you can translate it to your own beats it's going to sort of open up the doors to a lot of progressions you're going to see that a lot of the progressions are actually being used over and over a lot of travis scott songs if you take a look at travis scott beats uh they're pretty much going from the one to the five right a lot of his beads like countless beats of his are just one five two chords one to five the more you sort of dive into the theory of tracks and the chords used in the songs that you love you're gonna start to realize there's a pattern between the chord numbers that they're using in their tracks and now you can go ahead and apply it to your own beats because now you sort of have the cheat code to the chord intervals and where the chords should go within that scale just by knowing the chord numbering system really really easy to make it even easier you don't have to worry about how to draw out those chords now i have a pack listed down below this video it's called essential chords and it basically has every chord from every scale listed from the roman numerals one to seven and also the extended chords as well so if we want to replicate this uh internet monies track lemonade we just go to our triads folder over here we'll go to the one and drag in the midi so drag in the one then it goes to the seven and then it goes to the five and then it goes to the six all right and there's our chord progression right there and now since we're working in a dot environment we can go ahead and simply transpose this to a different scale just select all your notes and you can go down to b minor right the steps in between those chords is giving you that type of emotion and there are certain chord progressions that listeners really like to listen to but if you want to learn to sort of figure out the pattern for your track yourself the best way to do it if you're just starting out for major keys you can just work in the key of c major and figure out your chords from there or for minor scales you can go ahead and work in the scale of a minor a minor scale basically only plays the white keys so if you're trying to figure out chords and which numbers to play it's a lot easier to figure it out in a minor than it is in any other scale because it contains all of the white keys for the minor scale if you're working in the major scale you're going to want to choose the c major and a lot of producers use this tactic and then transpose from there all right so what i mean is if you're taking a look at the a minor scale your one is going to be a your two is going to be b your three is going to be c d four e five f f6 g7 and back to the one at a so if we take a look at those numbers and then apply them to the chords it's very easy to figure out this pattern so our one is a our seven will be g our five will be e and our six will be the f so already you hear that chord progression right there [Music] so now if i go ahead and play out the chords that are associated with the one seven five six it's a minor g major d minor f major now super easy to figure out the chords in an a minor scale simply because all you got to do is skip one white key so in a minor [Music] we're just skipping the white keys you see right over here skip that key skip that key we're going to go down to the seven g major we skip that key skip that key and so on and so forth so it's really easy to figure out the chords in a minor once again if you play it all together a lot easier to play than this [Music] right because you got to play a lot of black keys instead just play the white keys it's a lot easier and you get the same point across so right there is how you use the chord numbering system to produce better chords for your beats once again as you do this more and more you're going to start to realize a pattern and songs are pretty much using the same chord patterns every single time so you won't have to do this anymore you just sort of sit in the scale of a minor and figure out where you want to go for your tracks if you do have any questions on this we can go ahead chat in the comment section below but on that i hope you learned something new and i'll catch you on the next one later peace
