[Music] so [Music] friends eric andres your guitar sage here so glad you're with me today today we're going to be talking about the number system and in fact i'm going to be showing this to you in less than 10 minutes okay mikey let's start that counter all right here we go the national number system so essentially what the nashville number system is it's basically a way of writing chords in a universal or neutral key using numbers instead of the names of the chords now you're probably saying right now why would you do that and there are many many amazing reasons why you would do that things that will really help you understand music a lot more here's one of them if we're talking about a c chord let's say instead of calling that well if we just called it a c chord well in the key of c it's the one okay meaning that we're playing our scale one two three four five six seven one our major scale diatonic harmony is based upon the major scale 99.9 percent of all the music that you listen to is based upon the major scale even those in minor keys and the modes because those are all derivatives of the major scale that being said 99 of 99.9 of everything that you're listening to is based on the major scale okay so it would make sense for us to learn the major scale we're learning in the key of g one two three four five six seven one if we're learning it in the key of a one two three four five six seven one we're learning in the key of c one two three four five six seven one doesn't matter it just matters the fact that the interval notes are the same distance away from each other okay and what we're doing is we're naming each note according to this if we're walking upstairs okay that's it now again going back to our c if we're in the key of c major we have a our c would be our one in the key of c major because we have one two three four five six seven one c is our one we were in the key of f and we played through our scale the c would be the five one two three four five totally different role we were in the key of g and we went to the four one two three four that's a c in the key of g so even though the c chord in those three examples are all c chords they have three different roles that they play and what i mean by that is this you know the one of a key is the key it's the central theme it's the it's the one note that all the other notes revolve around point back to gravitate back to however you want to look at it same thing with the chords there's a central chord right it's the central theme of the music it's the key that central chord ever all the other chords want to point back to it gravitate back to it settle back down to it whether you know this or not you know it um and you know it naturally but you may not know the theory behind it for instance uh we had a song that that played right there was a bunch of c and say it was in the key of c and it had the f and the g and the c and we we played a song we said [Music] and i ended right there even though my guitar is slightly out of tune if i did that and i ended on that you would say that's not right so that's what i mean by you naturally know that this is not that this is the one you know if we ended on that you know your ear just heard that that's not correct so that's what i mean so you know this naturally but you may not know the theory behind it so let's talk a little bit about the theory don't get scared super easy stuff if you can count to seven you'll have it now so in any key one two three four five six seven right we'll do this in the key of g one two three four five six seven one you know the major scale right st take any note and go whole step whole step half half whole again here we go here's our one whole step whole step half step whole step whole step whole step half step if you know that that's the major scale and there's a chord that's associated with each one of these so for instance one major two minor three minor four major five major six minor diminished seven and back to our one major again so the chords go like this and according to their numbers major one minor two minor three major four major five minor six diminished seven okay and so what we do in the nashville number system we call the national number system it's also known as just the number system but specifically the national number system has uh doesn't change the numbers any it's just a specific shorthand for writing charts and what have you absolutely invaluable for learning how the chords function okay once you start thinking about music this way will absolutely change the way that you think about music and it will open up the entire fretboard for you but there's a little bit of a learning curve or at least you need to practice it i should say the learning curve is this 10 minutes here that we're six minutes into already so you've got that okay now understand that you have to practice this so for instance if we were in the key of g instead of saying uh this chord progression is a g c d in nashville here we would say well that's a one four and five in the key of g because those are those three chords are based on the one of the scale the four one two three four and the five one two three four five so the one is based off of the g the four is based off of the c one two three four and five is the d one two three four five but we play like this usually so so 1 4 5 would be g c d now why is that important because we know the roles of those chords and then also say if someone said hey change that key this is one of the many reasons why the number system would be valuable if someone said change the key to the key of a then i could easily say oh 145 in the key of a is a a d e now how do i know that well partially i have it memorized but also the number system aids me so for instance i would just take the same scale the same g major scale and then i bumped it up to a [Music] then i have my same scale it's the same form every single time you're not changing the fingering it's the same right [Music] same form so if i did that in the key of a a is my one one two three four that's a d and five one two three four five is an e that's why i said this was the one this is the four this is the five we were in the key of f well let's say the key of uh let's say we were in the key of f shirt here's my one two three four five so that the f is the one the four is a b flat one two three four press b flat and then c is our five so one four five or f b flat c so this will also help you navigate the neck a lot better than not knowing this okay and the 145 is so easy on these lower strings it's always it always looks like this if you're on the sixth string the one four five if you're on the fifth string same thing one four five the four is right underneath the one it's just one string underneath and the five's a whole step above it if you know that you're only one scale step away from all the other notes okay ma'am that's the nashville number system literally in under 10 minutes i told you we beat it we got we got time to spare now here's the deal this is obviously something that you're going to need to practice
