[Music] right welcome back to the channel everyone we have ourselves a little problem with the bmw [Music] come on will it start today of course it does well even though the car started it doesn't always and that's the problem it's just typical not now that i'm filming the car starts on the button first time no cobbles because for the past couple of weeks that has not been the case in fact it got so bad a couple of days ago that this happened yep the bmw ended up getting low loaded home thanks to having aa cover which is always a life saver the guy with the tow truck couldn't get it started and even when i got it home it wouldn't start for me either the car was having none of it that night and it just would not start no matter how many times the button was pressed nothing now i know what you're thinking dead battery is usually the most common issue maybe the alternator is not charging the battery so it's gone dead that's usually the first thing i go to but in this case but in this case that is not what i believe to be the problem which is why we bought this guy [Music] right this thing here is a starter motor if you don't know what that is essentially you send power to this thing when you press your car or you turn your key power gets sent to it um this little thing in here little wheel that tends the flywheel of your car and hence starting it that is why it's called the start motor now this is what i believe has gone bad on the car i don't think it's gone completely bad as i've just proven the car does start every now and again however it's an intermittent problem it happens at the worst of times as you can imagine and so i want to try and relieve that problem and not have the worry in the back of your head everywhere you go is my car gonna start because that's not a very nice feeling as you can probably tell from the state of this one um this is a secondhand unit i didn't want to go brand new because you're talking about 150 pounds for one of these and probably more if you went to bmw but about 150 pounds for the cheaper and branded ones or you can get a secondhand one which is a bosch this is a secondhand bosch one and i paid 45 pounds delivered for this so i don't think that's too bad now there is a chance because it's secondhand you don't know the life that it's had you don't know how good it's going to be or how bad it's going to be but i think for the price to give it a go place i got it from got a good reputation so i have all faith that this one will turn out fine so that's the job for today i think i know where this lives there's really not a lot of information about this online there's not many forums there's not many posts there's not many youtube videos at all i don't think there's any youtube videos on how to change um a one series star for some reason i don't know why i don't know if they don't go bad very often but hopefully we're gonna change up today and we're going to get this one put on the car and i'll show you how to do it [Music] all right i'm going to be using ramps today i don't use vamps very often but i think for this job these will be perfect so i'll take these out [Music] there's one thing i hate doing is driving up on ramps however now we've got all that room to work because the start maker is under there now before i get completely ahead of myself i should probably just give you a quick brief overview of this car because i don't think since buying this thing a year and a half ago i don't think it's been on the channel i don't think i've filmed any videos on it i don't think it's needed any work that i can remember i'm sure someone will tell me otherwise but i don't think it's been on the channel at all apart from the first video where i sort of showed it off and just showed i've gained a lot of subscribers since then so a lot of you have probably not seen this car probably don't even know um that it's part of the savage garage fleet so i'll just give you a quick show and then we'll get started all right so this is a 2008 um bmw 1 series it's the 118d so it's the two litre diesel version if you want to know more about this car and the specs and stuff like that there is a video which i'll link in the description which does like a whole walk around of it and that'll give you a better idea of you know the ins and outs of the car i'm not going to go through that today obviously because we're focusing on fixing it not on the actual car itself so without further ado i think we should get underneath the car and i'll talk you through the plan uh and how we're going to fix this thing today okay as you've already seen we're up on ramps so i've got a good amount of room under here just turn my light on so you can see so on these cars there's like a bunch of under trays on them uh there's another tray right underneath the engine which is this one here and being a rear wheel drive car the gearbox is around about there where my finger is and so the start motor i believe is located about here about where the camera's looking i think it's around here somewhere which means that this under tray needs to come off um it's held on by a bunch of these eight millimeters like that there's all the way around a bunch of little eight millimeters so that's the first job is to get this under tray off so i'm gonna grab my gun and eight mil and we'll whip all them out and hopefully you can get a better idea as to where it's located this one i'm going to go ahead and use my little d-bolt three-eighths just got a little eight-millimeter socket on the end there i'm just going to go around and whizz all these out [Music] all right there's all the little screws there's about 10 of them there and as you can see the tray is now on the floor and if we just pull it out like so grab one there you go they can see it all right i'm going to move this out the way i'm just gonna push it under the camera get the light under there and we'll have a little inspection and see what we can see okay so bottom of the engine if we move under right there is our start motor looks like a little bit of an oil leak actually saying that i wonder if that's got anything to do with it looks like we're leaking from our sump plug can you see that drip on there so i've got a leak there i don't know if it's leaking anywhere else but so this is our start maker here's our gearbox this thing here is our gearbox right there and the engine is here this is our sump pan for our oil engine oil and the thing just lives just to the side of that so what we need to do is if i bring this light back in hopefully you can see all this all right on the back of it we've got our live feed from our battery and then we've got our negative which is just there and then there's two bolts holding it on there hopefully you can see them two bolts there little torx bolts and i believe there's another one hiding somewhere up there there's like a hole i'll show you once i do it there's like a hole around here somewhere where there's another bolt just hiding away before i touch any of this though i'm going to disconnect the battery because i do not want to be touching all this when the battery's still alive i could short something out or cause some damage or even shock myself so unplug the battery just to be safe and then uh we'll start attacking this i didn't just realize on the subframe there's actually a jacking point right here so this is the subframe here let me see that there's like a rubber pad it's like a hard rubber plasticky pad which you can jack up on didn't know that it's good to know also this sensor whatever that is i guess it's like the oil level sensor or something it's only got two nuts holding it on i'm not sure why that is come on please right the starts of course it starts that's so annoying let's just try a couple more times just in case nope starts no it starts right i'm gonna give up so on these cars the battery lifts in the boot there's a little shelf in the back here where the battery lives if you guys remember i replaced this battery not less than a year ago i think the aaa guy did a health check on it and said that it's absolutely fine um absolutely nothing wrong with the battery whatsoever we're just going to go ahead and remove the negative off this all right there we go the negative terminal is just sitting there i've closed the parcel shelf so that it can't uh go down there and sort of try and touch it that's now isolated as it is so i'm happy with that if you imagine for a second that this is how it's mounted inside the car so that bit goes into the flywheel and that is how it sits that sort of angle got the t-nuts on the back for the positive and negative and then you can see our two bolts there which are going to be our torx bolts and then there's another one right there which is hidden at the top there so you need an extension to get to that one because it's quite firing as you can see i assume it'll be the same size as these two um that's kind of the idea those three belts two lock connections on the back pull this pull the old one out and then stick this new one in it should be as simple as that i don't know if you guys can see that i'm not but that might actually be our problem already [Applause] this here is the positive wire you see that there it's got a nut on it and the wire there i was just about to undo it with a spanner and as i went to turn hitler i don't know if you better see that but there's play in it now i don't know if that's because the nut is loose or whether because the solenoid on the side which is this little part here i'm not sure whether that may be damaged inside because that's not normal that shouldn't move that much that should be firm and tight on there so there's a good chance that that might actually be our problem and i'm not going to leave it in there because there could be something damaged inside that which is just causing it to every now and again just like be in the wrong position and not start that's what i'm thinking so i'm definitely going to have to deal with that hopefully that's going to undo i might get some wd-40 on it because it's rusty as heck but that may be the problem straight away that might just pull out of there if i pulled hard enough it feels really loose it's a 13 mil i've got a 13mm spanner here i'm going to just try and crack off with this hopefully it'll undo oh my god oh my god that's just whoa okay that's probably a problem can you see that what's just happened i barely had hardly tugged on that and that has just completely exploded well i think we might know what the problem was i gotta get that undone somehow so it looks like to me just using science that bolt there is all that's where the the power goes through that so it's obviously bolted on there it's just like the head of a bowl on this side and that touches on the copper plate inside there you see that there's like a copper plate inside there which i'll touch on and maybe that just wasn't making connection because it's so loose and as i've gone to undo it it's just completely sheared off which is okay because i needed it off anyway but that means i've got to try and get that off somehow i might have to get the impact out or something like that get some wd40 on it so that's one let's let's see if we can get this other one off all right i'm gonna hit this bit that broke off with a little bit of wd i'm just gonna try and soak that for a bit and i'm gonna also hit these ones with some wd as well just because all right we're gonna attempt to do the negative this time which is the smaller one which is a 10 mil i believe hopefully this one doesn't just sheer off there we go all right that one came off all right that's good so we've got our negative and positive wires off they're just now hanging here just put a bit more wd on it all right so next thing i'm tackling are these two bolts here there's one here one here and they are for camera focus e10s so the female torques type like the star type just going to crack both those loose as well okay so the last bolt is up in there it's not it's not uh i can't see it's not this one here it's the one up there you can see it a bit further in there it's the one in the middle of the screen right now that's what we need now it looks like it's going to be the same size all right there she is that's the the one bolt on its own that lives up there in that little crevice so it's just these other two now to quickly whip out and we should be able to remove this start motor easy peasy this one right there she is ah she's out right there we go it's oily it's pretty disgusting it's also broken now but it's out that's the main thing okay so we've got the old one and we've got the new one the first thing you can tell is that this one is obviously a lot cleaner this one is covered in oil and it's pretty disgusting but just looking at this thing what i assume has happened is either oil is going here or water or rust or something has affected this solenoid side because this is the actual starter motor and then you've got solenoid which lives on the side here um and what seems to have happened is you saw when i tried to undo the positive the bit that snapped off that was really loose and if the connection wasn't right in there you can see there's a piece of copper which it usually touches if this piece of rubber moves there's a piece of copper in there they're supposed to touch and if it's loose you know maybe you start up one day and it moves and it touches all right and then the next day you start up and it's not touching properly there's a good chance that that probably won't start because there's no good connection there so that's what i assume is wrong with this one um so it's definitely worth changing it out um i'm just looking at over making sure everything's the same when everything looks spot on which is good i've just checked all the numbers and stuff the little part numbers and they're all good one thing you need to make sure of i don't know if it makes a massive difference um if your car has start stop like this one does it's got start stop features so when you stop in traffic engine turns off and then it'll turn back on when you get to go i've made sure that this one came off a car that had that feature i don't use that feature and it's not something that i care about however it's good to just have it just to make sure that it's really compatible just in case someone in the future wants to use it so i made sure i've got one like that like i said this was 45 pounds and it looks in pretty good shape let's offer a car that was uh crashed into so this should be in fully working order so it's ready to get this one in i'm losing a bit of light which is a shame starting to get a little bit dark but hopefully we can get this in before it gets too dark let's do that right so the next thing to do is i need to try and get this nut off the positive and luckily there's a obviously a bolt going through so i can hold this side with a ratchet i'm going to try and use an impact gun on this one and just try and whip that off i've been soaking it in wd for a while so hopefully that'll come off i am a little bit concerned at the oil under the car it kind of looks like rear main seal around here because obviously where the gearbox meets the engine there's a there's obviously a seal on the crankshaft and if that leaks that's quite a big job um but i think it's coming from up the top somewhere there seems to be oil all down the side of the engine and i think it's just kind of made its way down i definitely need a new crush washer on the subplug [Music] finally the threads on that are gone look at that it just basically welded itself on and thread so you can push that on to the bolt that's completely knack of those but it's off that's the main thing someone in the previous video was asking me what brake cleaner i use i picked up a five liter jug of this on ebay it was like i think it was about 15 pounds something like that and i just literally put it in a spray bottle like this and use it as a squirter this has got like an adjustable thing so you can have it as a stream or as like a mist and i just put it in this and spray it on with that all right i need to find a nut for this as you know it's destroyed the other one so i've got a big old assortment of bits and pieces in here i'm sure i'll find a nut the right size that's too big this one works that'll work a treat that one this is the problem with these early nights now it's four o'clock it doesn't look like on the camera but it's almost pitch black out here which is uh rather frustrating because it means that my days are short and the time i get to work on cars is limited so i've got my brake cleaner i'm just going to go under there and give everything a quick clean try and get as much of that oil off as i can ready for a new one to go on okay so we are ready for our new start motor here she is i'm going to get it in position get the bolts in first and then we'll attach the uh the wires in afterwards it's going to be a bit of a wrestle this is quite a heavy piece of kit actually these are fairly weighty where it's gonna live which is about there ish i'm gonna try and get these bolts in first get them started at least i'm just going to run them down with a run them down with the old impact i'm gonna do them tight yet because i need to get that third bolt in yet so just like that all right so this third one lives up here somewhere i can't see what i'm doing i'm doing this blind so bear with all right so we've got all three bolts in those two are hand tight the one in the back is also in there and tightened up by hand as well so all that's left to do is to stick these two wires back on here the positive and the negative so we'll put this little guy on first the little negative because that's one we took off last i'm just going to quickly clean up the positive terminal because i want a good connection don't we i'm just gonna give that a few spritzes i guess it's a smart idea at this point to give us a little wire brush as well just so we've got the best connection possible not off wire on and then not on this is a 13 mil all right i think that'll be so they're both on everything's tight that is the new starter motor installed right the battery's got to go back on but i've managed to lock myself out of the boot i don't know how you open it from the inside so we are just going to do it from the backseat because i've got the back seats down anyway all right that's that back on and now for the moment of truth is it going to start with our new motor in there key in touchdown yes first time let's just turn her off just do it again be double sure yes nice just before i put the other tray back on i want to make sure that the car actually started which it does so the secondhand starter motor we've used is working which is good i'm just going to go underneath and double check all the bolts just make sure everything's hand tight and then i'll put the tray back on and we can call this job done right time for this thing to go back on now just give it a quick clean while i was under here give it a hoover [Music] right that's the under tray back on or what's left of it this thing's pretty beaten up but it does its job it protects the engine and the subframe and stuff so i'm happy with that only job left for us to do is just to reinstate the battery i took off again because when i checked under the car to see if the bolts were tight um just in case i shorted anything out i figured i'd just take off again and so i just need to put the negative back on for the last and final time we'll just do one last start just for the video so we can completely confirm lovely staff all right now because this problem was an intermittent problem it's hard for me to sit here and 100 say that it's fixed but looking at the old starter motor and all the problems that it had that it was wiggly and all that stuff i'm pretty confident that changing that out um is going to fix our issues it's one that i'm going to just have to keep you updated on i'll let you know in a few weeks if i've had any other issues touchwiz i won't but i'm going to call that job done i'm not going to take the car off the ramps because after this video i'm moving straight on to doing the brakes probably going to film that as well so we've got a brake light up on the dashboard saying that the pads are low so i've bought a whole set of brembo brakes to replace these ones so that'll be a video coming soon as well hope you guys have enjoyed this one i hope you've learned something as well nice easy little start amount of change on this bmw 1 series thank you very much for watching i'll see you guys in the next one [Music] you
