[Music] oh [Music] all right good afternoon folks welcome back to the channel welcome back to the first installment of the mondeo series had some really good feedback on my first video where i introduced you to this car into this project a lot of people were excited to see it a lot of people saying that they like this model of mondeo there's plenty of nice things said about this car so thank you for that but today as you can tell by the title you may be thinking to yourself what on earth are you doing doing a modification to a car that doesn't even drive yet as you know the clutches got in this car so it's not even movable but yet we are doing a modification to it before we do the clutch it doesn't make sense right let me explain right so on my first video where i introduced you to this car there wasn't many things that i picked up on that i didn't like about it however there was one little niggle about this car that i don't like um but i pointed out and that is that this car for some reason doesn't have bonnet struts when you lift it up as i pointed out my monday over there in the background does have bonnet struts i know that most mach3 mondays have bonnet struts the bmw has spawned strats even my astra has bonnet strats although i did fit them myself but for some reason this car being the top model doesn't have bonnet struts and to me that's no good and we're going to have to change that let me just show you if i go ahead and open the bonnet you'll see you know i have to open it myself which sounds like a first world problem but we've got a typical old-fashioned bonnet stay which is not a massive problem it is out of the way to the left-hand side however i'm going to be working on this car a lot this bonnet is going to be opened multiple times over the next few weeks while i'm doing the clutch work and so just to make my life a little bit easier i figured i would have a look and see if there was a way that we could convert this from the traditional hood prop into a car that's got the bonnet strut i figured if it's on the old mondays there's probably someone out there that's created a kit um or made a way that you can put strats on these cars and that is the case so that's what we're doing today we're going to be fitting the kit to this car that's going to convert it from a hood prop into having the most gas struts i'm hoping as well by doing so that this bonnet is going to be lift up a bit more as you can see i'm quite a tall guy i'm like six foot two um and so you know leaning in here i'm going to be hitting my head if i'm working in here there's you know look at the headroom there definitely going to whack my head a few times so i'm hoping by putting the gastrocs on as well it may lift the bonnet up just a bit more maybe like up here somewhere just so i don't whack my head on it it's gonna be a nice simple modification i think there's only a few bolts that you have to put in and whatnot um but i think it'll be a big improvement to this car and if any of you got mark fours and you want to do this yourself this will give you an idea of how to do it so uh let's get started now before we do start i will just show you the kit that i'm using um i didn't pick this for any other reason that it was the first one that came up when i searched on ebay i'm sure there's other kits available but if you do want to use this one i'll link it down below judging by the packaging and stuff it does look quite professional it looks like i've put a lot of thought and effort in here you can see we've got the two gas trucks here we've got our fitting kit which has got our brackets and stuff in there a couple of stickers and then what's nice about this is although it is a simple job they do include a instructions manual so you've got step-by-step pictures in there and it tells you all how to do it which is very handy hey lovely cheers mate thank you very much clutch kit just arrived for the monday that's handy they also sent me a packet of haribo which i always appreciate and then there's also a little card in here from the actual company themselves what they're called dark ice designers don't know dark ice designs is what they're called um but they've sent a little card in here and it says on there that if you want to film doing this yourself like what i'm doing right now um you can upload it to youtube and they'll actually send you a partial refund so if you film yourself doing this and put it on youtube and you send them the link to the video which i will do they said that they'll refund you partially um on your order which is kind of awesome like i said there's not a lot of stuff in here there's a couple of little brackets to fit better than that it looks pretty simple so i'll get this unpackaged and then we'll just crack on and get it fit to the car so we've got two nice looking straps i'm glad that they're black the ones on my astra are chrome and uh i'm not a fan so i'm glad that they're black struts this time two of them don't fall off the wall and then we've got our bracket kit which looks like that i've got two brackets that are gonna mount on the underneath the bonnet and then there's two that go on the wing you've got some grease there to put on the ball joints as well which is quite nice a couple of stickers that we'll probably put on the toolbox and then we've got our nice little leaflet instructions got eight steps here all pictured so there shouldn't be no queries as to how you're doing it or whether you're doing it wrong and then they even tell you you know it's all written down here as well to tell you exactly what to do it looks pretty simple to me all right so as you can see i've laid out all the little bits and pieces these are going to be the brackets to go on the bonnet there's a nut and a washer for that i think as well and then you've got a plate which is going to go on the bottom that's threaded hole in there in the middle of that square and then this is obviously going to thread into that and that'll be the one that sits on the wing i believe and then we've got a little pack of grease here just to put on these ball joints just so uh they don't wear out prematurely and then there's our two straps there [Music] all right so if we take a look under the bonnet where these um are going to be fitted you can see here the standard hinge and i believe that they're going to bolt to this top bolt so we'll remove this one the first bracket will be bolted onto there and then for the second one i think you have to remove the screw take this plastic off and there's a little place under there for the second one to sit and i think what it does is it replaces this screw so you don't need to put that back in and the ball joint will sit right there and then you'll connect it from there to there and the job's done right so let's go ahead and get this first one done shall we i don't know which bracket i need for what so i'm just going to grab both of these and see which one is for which side so there's a little tab on these hopefully you can see that there's a little tab here that points up and that's going to sit in it's like a little recess there so tell socket i'm going to take this nut off here first 10 mil right so i understand what i'm doing now i put the brackets on the wrong way to begin with i had it so that the ball joint was facing out on that side whereas say these e2 brackets uh the ball is going to be facing inwards so towards each other like that so this is the passenger side this is the driver's side and that's how they'll go on so the little tabs as well are facing down like that essentially so i'm gonna go ahead and fit one of these now i'm to do the driver's side as i was doing so i plant that on there like so but i'm going to put the nut on like so yeah right so that's now mounted on there as you can see so we now need to do the bottom one which i think we need to lift up this panel here there's a little screw plastic screw here so we need to undo that and then lift this plastic piece up and that's where our second piece will go so i need a screwdriver so i'm just gonna use a phillips i've also got a trim tool here you see this little pronged one so i'm gonna stick that under it as well while i do it and that's these are tricky these are little things they never want to come out there we go i will keep hold of that just in case i need it for the future that's what that looks like and then we should be able to pop this up okay so looking back on our instructions what we need now is square piece threaded square piece and then this little ball joint thing here and then also the washer that's what this washer is for the washer isn't for the bit on the bottom the washer is for this right here so i'm going to give it a quick clean just get rid of that and then the square is going to go under so if you look closely i'm going to fit that under there bugger dropped it no right you want to make sure you don't do what i just done i managed to fish it out with a magnet but don't drop it down the side because you will lose it right so i managed to get it on there i don't know if you've been able to see but the square's underneath and you sort of have to put your fingers to hold the square under there if you've got fat fingers this is going to be difficult and um i put the plastic down on top and then i've screwed in the washer and ball joint through the plastic hole essentially not easy a bit fiddly but i'm on there i just need to tighten this up now and that'll be fitted all right so that's now solid in there nice and strong not going anywhere this one two is solid let's check this tight yep so this is now ready for us to fit our strut to this so that's what we're gonna do i'm gonna grease this up first as well all right let's just pop this grease open this is what they supply i think it's just lithium grease or something like that i'll put a bit on that one put a bit on that one and then we've got our strut here the way it says to fit it is uh the black chunky piece is going to be at the top so closest to the bonnet and the thin little bar of it is going to be at the bottom so there's little clips on these that you just push around if you can see that just use your nail and those little like you clips hopefully you can see that right and uh oh sugar don't drop them in the stones if you can help it we just push this on now all right like a tiger there we go ahead of pop put that clip on so as you can see what i hoped was this is going to lift the bonnet up and is in this current state with the normal hood prop um it's not high enough so i actually need to lift this up at the same time as taking the clip off so i'm gonna have to lift the bonnet up whilst putting this on let's say then we need to put our clip in and that is now the left hand strut fitted to the car oh sugar that weren't supposed to happen so that one strut on its own is not not enough to hold it luckily my phone didn't smash so what i'm gonna have to do for now is just to put the headphone back in whilst we do the other side and then that should be enough to hold it up on its own it's good though isn't it nice and easy to fit them [Music] right well that is the second one installed as you can see that one was a little bit more tricky on the other side because it's a bit harder to get in here for some reason um but i got it done and as you can see the bonnet is being held up on its own without the hood prop what you can also probably tell is how much higher it is which is what i was hoping was going to happen than it was with just the bonnet strap if i show you where the strap would have sat before that's as far as it reaches there's a good half a foot there of extra clearance so my head doesn't hit the bottom anymore as you can see so i'm well happy with that so i'm just going to go ahead and give it an initial test this is going to be the first time i'll set the camera up over here right first i'm using it with bonnet struts let's just shut it nice i'm not going to shut it fully i'm just going to drill this so if i was coming in to work on it open it up oh how nice is that that's so much better than having this hood prop to worry about you can do it one-handed it lifts up from about here so chest height it will just lift up on its own which is nice i am well happy with that that's such an easy but so useful modification i love that boom i haven't got a clue why they didn't do this from the factory it just would have made sense it just would have been the right thing to do if considering a company a small little company has designed these so easily it was a perfect place for knives and it would have made sense before to do this from the factory back who knows why they do these weird things i'm probably going to keep the hood prop in here for now just because um i could pull it out i suppose probably could i pull it out i don't know how it's mounted in here so i think i'll just leave it for now and then maybe a later date i'll think of taking that off but the main thing is it's out of the way i can now swing in here and move without having to hit anything the biggest thing for me like i said tall guy i was hitting my head about here before it was like cronkin there as you can see now i can lean right in and uh it doesn't hear anything which is fantastic i'm well pleased with that [Music] right well i think that's going to be about it for this video um nice quick little install it's a modification i wanted to get done ever since i saw that hood prop i was thinking of ways that i could get rid of it and this was a fantastic way i want to give a quick shout out to dark ice designs i paid for this product out of my own pocket but when i come across something that i really like i like to give a shout out no matter what these have worked a treat you've designed a fantastic little piece of kit simple but effective which is always the best policy these things are going to make working on the car a heck of a lot more enjoyable you've probably saved me a few bangs in the head which i appreciate so shout out to you keep making the good products but that is where i'm going to end this video i hope you guys have enjoyed it i hope you've learned something i assume they probably make these for other cars so make sure you go to the website and just check if you're looking for a kit to swap your car out whatever it is they probably do cover other vehicles so make sure you check once again i just want to say a quick thank you to everyone for the positivity on the last video where i introduced this car a lot of people saying they really like the car and it's great to hear so as you would have seen in the video the clutch kit arrived for this there's been a lot of talk in the comments as well about the dual mass flywheel i'm aware of the issue that these diesels have all diesels that have dual mass flywheels seem to have a problem with them either failing early or failing when you don't expect it whilst i'm going to be in there i've decided i've spoke to my dad and sort of uh mulled it around in my head and i've decided i am going to do the dual match flyer as well so it's going to be a dual mass flywheel clutch uh the clutch kit is made up of the clutch plate clutch pressure plate and also the uh slave cylinder so i'm gonna be doing all four things um kind of makes sense i suppose it is at 140 150 000 miles uh so it's probably if it's never had one it's probably due one um so we're gonna be doing that as well it's an extra expense i didn't really want i think dual mass flywheels they worked out at about 200 pounds um it's 200 pounds i didn't want to spend but i'll probably kick myself later on if i don't do it so if you want to help support channel whatsoever i do sell stickers so if you want to pick up a couple of them it will help me to fund the uh the old project thank you very much for watching i'll see you guys in the next video you
