i think it's good and nice for us to look for the the doctrinal parts of the book of deuteronomy but if we can't hear the pain of moses if we can't see the the challenges that he met and why now on the brink of dying he would bring this back we have missed something yes that will [Music] hello everyone and thank you for joining us once again at the biblical perspective and you're with myself colleen and with pedro and we're continuing on our series of studies on the book of um deuteronomy we're actually um starting a brand new quarter of studies on the book of deuteronomy we've obviously finished our studies on rest in christ we did our first lesson last week um which is really important for you to understand as we continue through the study on the book of deuteronomy and before we actually go any further into this study pedro i wanted to start with a word of prayer could you and please pray for us our father in heaven thank you again for the opportunity to study your word we pray for wisdom intelligence understanding and also desire and ability to obey your word as you teach us in jesus name amen amen so we're actually on our study number two and this is a moses history lesson study number two so if you're actually new to the biblical perspective don't forget to subscribe to our channel and also don't forget to to like this video so pedro um we we looked at a really important lesson um important study last week in regards to like the history and the context in which we find um and the book of deuteronomy and also how important it is that we are actually studying this book in the 21st century now as we're going to study number two we're actually delving into deuteronomy itself so um definitely come along and study with us and as we study this lesson if you have any questions please leave those questions in the comments section below we um we answer all of our comments and um we respond to the questions that we get so if you have any questions relating to this video then please leave it and in the comment section below so pedro as we started the actual study of deuteronomy itself um in the very first chapter of deuteronomy in actually deuteronomy 1 verse 1 we read these are the words moses spoke to all of israel in the desert east of jordan so we see moses at the beginning and then we actually and then at the very end of the book of deuteronomy in deuteronomy 34 5 it says and moses the servant of the lord died there in moab as the lord had said so throughout the book of deuteronomy and we actually see him moses moses's presence and we see that moses actually dominates the book of um deuteronomy although we see that we know that the book itself is about you know is about um is about god what we see most at the beginning moses at the end and we see moses all through um the book of um of deuteronomy so um before we actually dive into the study of the book itself i wanted to ask about um how does this contribute to a better understanding of moses um as a character and his role in the in in the biblical narrative you mean how does the book of deuteronomy contributes to a better understanding again we need to go back to what we said and when you say we delve into the study of the book of deuteronomy it is very important for us to understand that from verse 1 we are delving into the essence of this book as you rightly said moses is at the beginning he is at the end moses is the one who wrote the first five books of the bible they are foundational in what today we call the bible without moses ministry we would not have a bible yes you actually mentioned even last week when we studied this about um about how important for example genesis is in understanding our origins and where we've come from and even about like the fall of man and saying so we need to understand that this book of deuteronomy which is giving us an insight as a one-day event into what moses thinks is the most important for him to say before he dies we need to understand that it is it is important to find all the doctrines that we want to find in this book but if we don't do it within the the frame in which moses lays out this writing we have missed the most important part for instance when you ask how does the book of deuteronomy help us understand better the ministry of moses again we go back to what does he say from the beginning if you look at chapter 1 from that you already have a sense of how difficult it must have been for moses to lead these people to this point where they are at now in fact if you go to chapter 1 verses 28 26 to 28 we see that he begins this book with strong words very strong words to the people so if you read that for me okay so deuteronomy 1 and 26 to 28 and it says but you were unwilling to go up you rebelled against the command of the lord your god you grumbled in your tents and said the lord hates us so he brought us out of egypt to deliver us into the hands of the amorites to destroy us where can we go our brothers have made us lose heart that they say the people are stronger and taller than we are the cities are large with walls up to the sky we even saw the amakites there you see when you read that and that's right at the beginning of the book that's chapter one all it gives you in the insight into the difficulty of moses's mission and it tells you a bit more about who moses really was he starts by telling the people the hard time that they have given him and they have given god himself and now at the time that he recounts this and he's telling them that he is on the border yes of the promised land the promised land over jordan that that is 40 years after they were supposed to get in there and this is what he says how rebellious they were how they would not be willing to listen to god i think it's good and nice for us to look for the the doctrinal parts of the book of deuteronomy but if we can't hear the pain of moses if we can't see the the challenges that he met and why now on the brink of dying he would bring this back we have missed something yes that will actually our journey with god because moses leaves this so that we can understand that part are you with me yeah and i think that's a really an excellent point because you talked about the the the similarities in regards to you know the people of israel entering into christianity and and you know our similarities and it's relevant it's a relevant point that although understanding the doctrines is important and being able to to convey this doctrine to others is important we cannot miss the message that god has for our hearts and from the beginning he's telling them about their rebellious nature and how they have ill-treated this god who took them out of slavery into freedom as if he were himself bringing them back into a worse kind of slavery do you understand how twisted that is and how difficult it must have been for moses to deal with that now if you look at verses 29 to 31 we progress with that we're looking at how we can better understand this powerful unique prophet of biblical history entirely okay um so deuteronomy 1 um 29-30 and it says then i said to you do not be terrified do not be afraid of them the lord your god who is going before you will fight for you he as he did for you in egypt before your very eyes you see moses is one who encourages people in the face of what they would think impossible challenges he stands between god and the people he hears what god has to say but he feels the pain of the people but he takes god's side and encourages the people to go over the hurdles this is something we probably need to listen to to hear to understand and maybe to apply if we are in a position of leadership um we could go on about how this could happen but let's let's just leave it there hear what we're saying and leave it there so that gives us an insight into what kind of life moses lived with these people over those years and taking them from egypt to the promised land how focused he was on achieving this now if you keep reading this chapter there is a particular verse that jumps out and that's verse 37 if you can read that form okay so deuteronomy 1 and verse 37 and it says because of you the lord became angry with me also and said you shall not enter it either that's right in the beginning at the very beginning and moses is telling them look in a few hours i'm gonna die because remember that's a one-day event moses is telling them in a few hours i'm going to die and i'm going to die on this mountain without setting foot on the plot in the promised land because of your behavior we need to think about this these people they knew everything moses had to say within this book concerning the law are you with me but now what we need to hear from moses is what he is telling them about how much their behavior their attitude towards god and towards him have has caused him right are you with me so it's like moses is telling them before i die i want you to reflect right yes on what it has cost me to lead you from slavery to freedom because of how you perceive god's work in your life and the hard time that you gave me it has a price are you with me this is why it is important to see this aspect along with the doctrinal aspects we need to see this aspect because when we work on our everyday journey as christians we may be causing a lot of people not to set foot in the promised land while we are we seem to all be on the journey to there because of our behavior so that gives us an insight and moses is going to repeat the exact same thing because of you in chapter 4 21 he is going to repeat that still the beginning of the book he is going to tell them again because of you the lord was angry with me and he said you're not going in do you see the pain definitely do you see the misery and all of that on behalf of a people that moses spent his life trying to help and pedro the reason why i feel that's an excellent point is because last week we discussed and mentioned the fact that a large proportion if not most of deuteronomy is actually a repeat off the books that's gone before so like by focusing on on that element of you know this this doctrine or or this particular element and miss the context of deuteronomy then then we're potentially leaving this book without the message that god actually wants us to hear that's why you said at the beginning it's about it's about god but moses is in there that's a one-day event you need to ask yourself the question why it is like this and i believe it is to take into consideration this aspect of things so if that's the case then then then what then is the relevance of this or what you're discussing to us as bible readers today and you know in the context of them of the fact that we're still at the very beginning of this book of deuteronomy it's important that as we you know start and we're still building the foundation the foundational element of studying this book but as we arrive at the end of this book that we take away and live with with what we really should have so what is the relevance then of what you're saying um to the bible reader today you see we have this analogy that i will take you have people who worship their military personal personals and and they are always about how these people make great sacrifice so that they can enjoy prosperity peace freedom and they basically worship these people they count the cost [Music] you know what is happening now in some parts of the world we we are we're not doing politics but in some parts of the world there is great in instability because of the military movement some troops that have left and now chaos is happening it's been 20 years that they were there and nothing is being nothing has improved because as soon as they go back to their place whatever chaos they wanted to address in the first place is returning so the question but you see the question of who serves for what purpose moses the relevance of that these people who serve to bring peace these people are lifted up these people pursue careers these people have plans for their lives these people retire these people earn money these people are praised because they have chosen to do that but in terms of moses what we see here is the complete opposite he has served he has given himself he has paid the price now what has he got he is not entering into the promised land because of the nobody praises him okay they will they will mourn after his death 12 30 days but he's gone are you with me so sometimes the relevance of that is for us to realize what it costs other people to serve god so that they can bring peace in our lives so that they can bring prosperity in our lives so that they can bring freedom in our lives and i'm almost hearing paul when he says we have become for you the the the scam of this world we have made ourselves poor while enriching you if you read in second corinthians chapter 12 for instance chapter 12 yeah 12 or 11 i can't remember exactly where he lays out all the troubles that he has gone through so that these people to whom he is he is served for whom he is serving god may benefit the story of moses tells us that there is a sacrifice there is a price but there is also a joy that is different from anything else yes he's not going in yes he's had all this uh suffering in the wilderness for 40 years with these people but they are entering the promised land yeah and obviously he's been instrumental so it is relevant to us today so that we can endure whatever needs to be endured be faithful and see the materialization of god's promise still being realized in our lives and in the lives of other people and that's an excellent point and um going on further from that um i wanted to think about him you know is there something in particular in deuteronomy that actually demonstrate you know this um this like really really key point that you've just discussed if you go to deuteronomy chapter one again let's stay there in the first place and yeah and read verses 12 to 18. but how can i bear your problems and your burdens and your disputes all by myself choose some wise understanding and respectful men from each of your tribes and i will set them over you you answered me what you propose to do is good so i took the leading men of your tribes wise and respectful men and appointed them to have authority over you as commanders of thousands of hundreds of fifties and of ten and as tribal official officials and i charged your judges at that time hear the dispute between your brothers and judge fairly whether the case is between brother israelite or between or between one of them and and an alien do not show partiality in judging hear both sides hear both small and great alike do not be afraid of any man for judgment belongs to god bring me any case too hard for you and i will hear it and at that time i told you everything you were to do you see that's right at the beginning there is a great sense of of of burden on moses and and moses now has to somehow delegate by establishing people who will work along with him so that this great movement in the wilderness going from egypt to the promised land may go as smoothly as possible yet he is insisting on a character point when he establishes these people over the rest of the people what does he ask them to do he asked them to act righteously and judge fairly and judge fairly why would he ask them to do that it's because he is dealing with a people that is unfair and even their judges would be unfair even their leaders would be unrighteous what would that do to moses as somebody who wants to do the will of god as a leader under god leading that sort of people are you with me so if you read the story in numbers 14 these people that moses was leading wanted to stone him yes because he was trying [Music] to get them into the will of god because he was trying to have them do the right thing so that themselves would benefit from the presence of god and realize their potential in god they wanted to stone him so what we see here is an insight into moses ministry but also moses's character and how he persevered and when we we look at the book of deuteronomy as a one-day event he is saying all these things because he knows he's gonna die on the mountain hours later that puts into perspective why he would tell these people this right at the beginning of his speech and this is a point beyond the fact that we're looking for you know doctrines that we need to understand because it is relevant to us why because it is dealing with our very hearts our very nature as a people of god it is dealing with how we see those who lead under god some of us it tells us about how we who are under the people that god has established can make these people make the lives of these people almost impossible and their missions at pain all because they are trying to serve god and do us good moses is very clear from the beginning that this is your situation and i think if you look at revelation again we come to the book of revelation chapter 3 and we look at the last church if we look at it prophetically in terms of time we say that's the last church christianity before the second coming of christ and the message that is there connects right with the mentality of the people moses is dealing with here you have all the doctrines you reach you have all the gold you have all the silver you have all the nice raiment you feel like you don't need anything but where are you going if you look at where jesus is in that church he's at the door outside knocking trying to get in are you with me this is right at the beginning of moses's speech what he is trying to tell these people yes i'm gonna tell you all these laws yes i'm gonna tell you what you need to do and not to do but i want also to tell you what is in your heart and i want to tell you what it costs other people and yourselves and pedro that is such um as i said before um that's a really really an excellent point because you know as we're still at the foundational part of trying to understand deuteronomy and as we study deuteronomy um i think it's important that we we kind of like recognize this point as we study because it's easy as we keep on saying it's easy to look at um particular sections and look at the doctrine and to look at specific sections and look at them like understanding what that means without actually grasping what god is actually trying to say and it's so easy for us to to kind of like be be on point with oh this is what the word of god says this is what the word of god says we should do this is what the girl the word of this is how the word of god says we should live and we can um we can recite that and we know that really well but yet our hearts are far from god yeah and that that is moses's experience you're talking about god's people that is moses's experience for 40 years and he is saying not once not twice several other times throughout the book because of you i did not make it [Music] that's excellent that's a really excellent point and i just feel as though that um that i want everyone to after this 13th quarter after these i'm 13 studies um on the book of deuteronomy that we kind of like really leave this book with the points that we need to leave this book with and it's important that when we do study god's word that it changes us that as and we study god's word and that we we take and understand the points that god wants us to understand and that our hearts are changed and it's not just another oh this is what we believe and um you know this is what we should do this is how we should live but there needs to be a change of heart which is the aim of god speaking to us okay well thank you for that excellent study um today pedro and as we continue to study the book of deuteronomy please make sure that you continue to study with us we're going on to our third lesson and third study next week um so please subscribe if you've not subscribed before and also don't
