The BEST Single Barrel Bourbon is...

hey y'all my name is Kurt and I'm here with that guy Trenton welcome to SLB basement bourbon bar and today Trenton is another episode of whiskey Wars where the girls pick out the bottles and we have no idea what's on the bar top and I couldn't tell you what episode we're on I want to say it's like maybe four or five we've done a couple of these before but this is definitely the first this year and it'll be these are always interesting when mom picks these without Michelle because Michelle really kind of knows her Bourbon and knows her whiskeys and things God love her she mom doesn't know much about the stuff so when she when she does do them they're always interesting because she's kind of picking stuff I don't like I don't know if she's picking stuff because of the label's cool or kind of what what her thought process is one thing about your mom she'll never pick one because that's the most popular right you know why because she'll have no idea if it is the most popular right and in a way that's the hardest part in your brain because it could be anything and the only thing that we're going by tonight is it is a Single Barrel Bourbon yep and we have probably at least 20 of those in here I'm sure many at least okay yeah oh yeah for sure when I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what we have now yeah so I mean and and it could be she could pick anything so shoot okay so good to know that's all we got and she takes her job seriously too she does yeah I told her I had to come through to I said I mentioned I have to go change my shirt for myself because you know she had the bottles over there she didn't want me to see him don't want to ruin a surprise huh no no she's serious about it there's definitely no cheating we're actually upstairs during the bottle selection process and I we are not allowed to be down here and I thought I heard some Giggles wow she's scheming something or what the deal is but it's possible what what she did Trent she's got them set up for us already so our glasses are labeled a b c d and she has them lined up a on your right oh she switched it up on us okay a little bit yeah that's okay A on your right d on your left cool so other than that that's all I got for everybody I don't know nothing about which side would you like to start with let's switch it up this time and we'll uh we'll start with d and work our way back towards a we'll start with D I'm ready for it all right yeah all right my ocd's kicking in these glasses aren't the same they have different stuff on them I know yeah we got to get some more we've got the same glasses who's in charge of ordering things around here me the nose is pretty nice I don't like things I do I really do it's it's okay it's almost kind of Dusty yeah like towards the back end I wanted to say it was reminded me of kind of like a Buffalo Trace nose kind of sweet um but now that I get that dust I've never gotten a Dusty thing from yeah some brown sugar in there nothing deep but a real nice sweet house for sure it's kind of tasty you think so I do it's weird well it's I got primed with the nose and then it kind of flipped the switch on me with the pad a little bit I get on the pout I get a lot more of like an OP uh maybe like a tobacco wee kind of thing going on I'm in with that okay yes I'm saying yes I like it really yes okay yeah interesting yeah you know what you brought that out a while ago that I I and I really never thought of it but I guess I am a little bit more uh I am a little bit more likely to choose Bourbons I have a little bit more of a oak profile than what you do as long as it's a it's a good Oak I don't want to know yeah I don't want no muskie chunky Oak I'm going through yeah that's pretty good I'm going through my mental Rolodex here because it almost reminds me of like a Jim Beam profile but I don't think that there's any Jim Beam single barrels that are below 120 proof right you might be wrong and the only reason he does it this is of course my basement but there is a baker's seven year Single Barrel I don't know anything about Bakers I'm just saying I think we did a video about it let's pass that I haven't I couldn't tell you that's Baker's I personally couldn't but there is one over there since you're asking now I I suspect this might be a Jim Beam product could be wrong for those of you that don't know and I might be I might be spilling the beans here a little bit early but I'm going to be on Matt Madness this year because I really gotta hone in my my skills for my tasty nosing and I got a lot of wall stuff as you might know Charlie won't make it past the first round sorry to interrupt you but good time trend is going to be our representative for SLB drinks on Matt Madness and I will say this Trenton he is going to be he's going to have a he's going to have his hands full with you it it it's going to be I'm trying to say here it's going to be fun that's for sure let's see what C's all about hmm completely opposite yeah it's more of a vanilla light vanilla nose yeah a little bit of sugar but a light vanilla knows brown sugar definitely foreign I hope this transfers to the palette that's interesting higher proof for sure then uh then d I would think so there's a flavor in there I'm not so sure about like what it might be yeah you know what I could be wrong it seems to me like it's uh a little young Maybe okay [Music] I can't tell if it's more of like a young thing or maybe more of a like a tannic kind of Oaky sure or like maybe something like a high Rock because I get some like a tingling oh really yeah yeah I don't know if I'd say that but you might be right but I don't know if I'd say that it seems to me like more of a budget Style bourbon I'm usually not right I've learned over the times and I hate to admit that you know it's good but it seems a little young and with that comes the tannic yeah you're speaking of it does have a little bit of uh you know of a caramel flavor to it uh but it has it to me it just gives me the my first impression just seems to be budget I could be dead wrong but that's what it seems to be you get some grape notes in there no no but you know that is my hardest I I say peanuts and Myers too but a grape is is hard for me to pull out red fruits great grape I just I have a hard time with that I struggled with that at first but I think it's gotten a little bit easier for me over the years but I could be completely wrong all right we're gonna move on to B oh that's kind of nice but that's like an icing like a confectionary sugary and I don't even like icing and that's well that is I don't mean that does it does honestly it it's like you open up there like you open up that can of frosting honey that that you know what I'm saying can of frosting my mom always made Mater frosting why I don't know like that tow truck from Cars you do pardon me like that tow truck from Cars made it made her frosting for cakes oh made her you know honestly Matt think twice about having Trenton on your show that's all I can say we're gonna get a D in here shortly your access has been removed might give an email by tomorrow I've never had I've never opened a can of vanilla frosting so I'm not sure what Aromas you're talking about oh well your mother and I have a few times it's good do you want to tell the folks why well that sounds bad don't answer that question we did with brain crackers huh whoa thank you honey [Music] that doesn't match the nose to me at all does it to you that's interesting because I was really digging the nose so was I and the palate is a lot more earthy than what I feel that the nose delivers to me now I can't say that I don't like it it just was a surprise mentally it was a surprise yes but do you know what photosynthesis is foreign take a picture oh God please tell me you're kidding I'm sure it has something to do with botany but it's like the the thing that plants use to grab energy from the Sun and stuff if I had to guess what that tasted like it would be like this it's like if I were to if I I used to like pick those dandelions out of the the yard when I was young and kind of chew on them oh my God kind of like that I like that okay I like when it like a so this has a Tasty Noodle full little synthesis photosynthesis is that what you're trying to tell me yeah well that's probably a first for the folks watching if they've never heard that note oh I'm sure I'm sure nobody has heard that if you've heard photosynthesis used as a tasty note let me know I hope somebody does fish let's stick with earthy it is a little earthy um it does I'm going to stick with that it's a little earthy you don't want to go in depth anymore you you have you've gone more than in depth on that one so I have a couple more notes if you'd like to share that's fine for me I'm a little disappointed because yeah because the nose to me was really really nice and it didn't transfer very well so yeah leave it at that very earthy I'm gonna go with a we're gonna go down to a we're gonna get off photosynthesis for now I know what this is well I no I don't well I might name that bourbon in one sniff he h Taylor single bro [Music] if this is Easter Single Barrel we should do like a bet give you 100 bucks this is easy that is pretty good I think you'll give me a hundred bucks if this is these two single bro it could be a new roof oh I didn't think about that shoot I don't know I'm just throwing things at the kid new riff does have in my opinion kind of a sweeter a sweeter nose kind of reminiscent to what Buffalo Trace has to offer so you might be onto something I don't know may not be but that's awfully good that's all I can tell you that has a lot of sweet flavors in there a lot of a lot of caramel a lot of a lot of brown sugar just a little bit of Oak very sweet very nice sip yeah it's really nice what what some might call crushable and I don't know if the what the proof differences are on this but I feel like this is probably maybe the lowest of the of the bunch could be because I kind of get that could be it's very nice biggest question of the night so far then Trenton what's your first one that's going to be heading out of this little this little blind we're doing right now I know two of them I need I'm gonna do a quick taste and make sure I'm top do you have some yeah I know I know mine already for me for me personally I'm going to take out honey I'm going to take out C is my first choice to take out it just that could be dead wrong and that's that's the problem blind but it seems to me tonight to be a little young and a little tannic is tannic Oak this Trent was mentioning so I'm gonna pull out see I'm sorry yeah that's that's it I'm going the opposite way again see I'm gonna go with B I I don't I don't maybe mind the youngness of C just because it has better flavors than B I think okay I feel like B has um and I usually like four greens a lot but like a little bit higher of a barley content and you know what that and that makes sense because between what I've noticed here with all of our shows here lately in the last six months I tend to lean to like more earthy type you do yeah you know flavors than you do so that doesn't surprise me to tell you the truth okay interesting so now for me Trenton I don't know about you but for me on the on the first trip through a was my nicest sip I would yeah I would agree it was really nice so I'm going to concentrate for me personally on B and D and see which next one I'm going to move back I got to see I can't I can't tell you that right now right I'm pretty low on my my samples here okay these are wild though I always love doing these blinds because I have absolutely no idea oh yeah if I'm right or wrong I'm usually wrong as history would show based on you know we did a blind once and I think it was on a live show and I think we did five or six and I guessed all of them as incorrectly as anybody could so I don't think uh hey my track record isn't good that is not that is not easy to do well for me honey I can just tell you for me I'm I'm going to back out B I do like those earthy flavors as you know honey you know I like that you know in cooking and everything else I dig that earthy flavors and but to me Trenton which one's this one again honey deep D is a little bit sweeter yeah it has some has some nicer Notes too so I'm gonna I'm gonna back out B I'm gonna back out see okay so then so then at least we're these two are different but at least we're we're left with yeah A and D I think I have a hunch about what mine might be I just had these I'm gonna try it one more time but I'm pretty sure I know what I'm going with all right yeah on that's so nice it is nice yeah it's very very smooth it's almost at this point it's almost like drinking an 80-proof bourbon but the flavors are very pronounced which I really like so I don't know about you I feel like we're probably on the same page but I would I would pull out d as my second place well I'm gonna have to say the same thing but I will tell you I do like this one it's very good I like it a lot I just think this has a little bit more going on yeah I really do it's got a little depth to the flavor as well that I really really like but I think this is nice and sugary and yeah it's sweet too but I'm going to be the same as Trenton honey I'm gonna go I'm also going to pull out d letter d so for both of us then the letter A wins all right scared so now here's there's the hardest part trying to figure out who's line up as well not the hardest part but here's the scariest part for Trenton and I so we'll go with your lineup no well we're gonna do a Trends left we're gonna go with my lineup okay cool okay so then Trenton's which one was Trenton's last one all right what do you got no get out of here crap there you go wow okay Henry McKenna who is what tenure B was my last B was your was your last one that's just so odd [Music] I don't have much left do you normally like it I know yeah I do like there's there was a time where this was a daily before and I loved it it just seemed a bit earthy tonight it did for whatever reason well it's like the same with me I haven't eaten anything since noon well how long has it been since we've sipped Henry McKenna a long time but still honey you're killing that that's see that's what she does since I moved I moved about that's what she did five months ago I haven't been drinking a ton just because all my stuff is packed up in boxes upstairs and what I do have in the basement is very minimal still in our house right A lot of it yeah I gotta move some stuff that's surprising so that's your third place that was my third place okay all right so what's what's the next one Trenton's third place I normally have all the bottles next to me but I didn't want you guys walking down into the basement and looking at the shelves thinking okay that one's missing so I know that's in it so I kept a few bottles on the Shelf of course so see she see I didn't even see what she doesn't think to look now she's actually walking all the way over off the shelf because she didn't want us to oh oh wow we don't have any experience with that at all really to speak up no I've never had the only time I've had that is the 14 year interesting so this is the lucky seven six year proprietor Trent and I have not dug into this at all I don't know did you get that at Benny's or in Kentucky I think this one was at biddies okay okay honey and this was your third place and this is my last place yes that was your last yes well again I truly we don't have any experience with that Harley at all no I've never had that way to go honey got us again okay all right now we're back on track to where Trent and I are on the same page babe our second our second place glass then was letter D I'm scared freaking way oh he's mad madness here he comes Baker's seven here I can tell my Jim Beam yes you can but it is a good bottle let's say it is a good bottle it's it's good stuff on that uh 107. that didn't drink like that drinks like a 90. yeah really nice isn't that something I am ecstatic wow good job on your part did we do this in a blind or did we do this in a review of some sort the baker or something do you remember no I don't think we've I don't think we've really ever done much with it interesting yeah cool though that's that's yeah that's awesome yeah well good job all right honey letter A is actually in first place letter a is behind you of course it is on the board it is the John J Bowman so what Buffalo Trace asks I got you left at third idiot so we wouldn't pick up one of course you have a big spot missing my car you crack me up John J Bowman's Singapore we we said how good it is yeah and it proved it in this blind now there was some embarrassing moments I called this youthful and budget Style I really have no experience with it but I called it a budget bourbon there's about 60 70 hey maybe 80 bucks I don't have no idea I could see where you're coming from though because it's kind of tanicky yeah in a way that I wouldn't expect a six-year so we had some embarrassing moments and I I'm sad about that you know that was my third place but still good job on your part and I think both of us this this is just a quality bottle yeah it really is and we proved that tonight was playing well and and I I said Buffalo Trace but this is actually a Sazerac product it's distilled in Virginia I think two or three times and then it's transferred over to to uh Sazerac Buffalo Trace for bottom um so yeah I didn't do too bad good job buddy but I mean this was kind of the big surprise of the night this this has won countless Awards year over year at the um world Spirits competition yeah it's just been long and I just crapped on it it's been a long time and I don't I don't know if if the if this has kind of declined because I know the price went up yeah um and I don't know if the juice went down I'll have to try the one I have at home and see what it's about because I don't remember that that flavor
