what's up everybody peter mckinnon here welcome back to yet another video and yes this is a large hat i'm sure that's the first thing you thought of when you click you open wow all i see is hat okay we'll get to that but today we're talking about why i think the 50 millimeter lens crushes everything it's all i've been using and why every photographer needs to use one and if you have one why i think it might be the only lens you need in your camera bag [Music] recently i traveled downtown to meet up with my friends at kudat who make these incredible custom one-of-one handmade wide-brimmed hats look how sick this is the details all over this hat can only best be shown to you and describes with the 50 millimeter lens let's take a look at this hat in glorious 1.2 50 millimeter [Music] juiciness everything was done on the 50 millimeter lens so a few pros it's got incredible depth of field in a very small package being a 1.2 lens it compresses that background beautifully which you guys know that i love and you don't have to have a 7200 or a large telephoto to get that creamy smooth background but specifically with this 50 millimeter lens it has a beautiful bokeh it's not overly heavy and overly large i find the 85 to be just a tad too big the 7200 is a bit of a commitment the 28 to 70 is just zero chance going in my bag because it's the size of my head [Music] at 1.2 this lens is super sharp zooming into some of these photos you'll notice grain i added all of that green don't confuse that with the image quality not being there or not being sharp i feel like it adds such a rich texture jay sitting here looking at his computer look how clear and nice and pronounced that portrait is at 1.2 [Music] i think that the 50 mil is the perfect focal range for so many types of photography you can shoot product photos with this you can shoot landscapes with this you can shoot portraits with this it's a great lens for events it's a great lens for automotive it's a great lens for so many things umbrella together which is why i end up carrying this and this alone almost always [Music] this covers so many genres of photography and that's the 50 millimeter range across the board i'm not just saying it's the 50 millimeter rf you guys know that i'm a canon ambassador that is not saying this this rf exclusively covers all of these things that's just the 50 millimeter range within this industry this video is brought to you by storyblocks and in the most movie voice that i can muster up the most movie trailer voice stay on budget while telling your story with the most affordable subscription plans on the market storyblocks demand driven library is royalty free so you can use your downloaded content anywhere for commercial and personal use the unlimited all-access plan gives you unlimited downloads of over 1 million assets so you can find the perfect fit for your project every time sometimes it's just fun to talk like that pause this video and just give it a shot now storybox is an amazing partner in a product that i do use as proof you might be saying pete i want to see it i don't want to just hear it i want to see it to believe it last year at the end of the year we put out our final yearly film just a youtuber the entire intro of that film was storyblocks footage i did not shoot a single piece of that being able to dive in and take a bunch of assets from storyblocks put them into a video build an entire intro that was helpful so i've left their link in the top line of the description so you can check them out if you're someone that makes videos and maybe you can't travel all the time or you have a quick deadline or a client that needs something very specific that you don't have stored in your library honestly highly recommend it the link can be found in the description below thank you storyblocks for sponsoring this video [Music] now with all those positives let's talk about a couple disadvantages this lens has specifically this 50 millimeter rf i find that when you are shooting at 1.2 it can hunt a lot now that's not a problem if you're doing photos and it's able to pick its subject off fast and catch on to something but if you are shooting b-roll or you're shooting maybe even a-roll at 24 frames per second and you're trying to capture audio you can hear the motor hunting [Laughter] so had i been trying to capture audio in front of that that would have bothered me the perfectionist that i am when i'm making videos i would not like that i would need to be recording the audio separately then on a lapel or booming that audio and a loud hunting autofocus motor drives me nuts now i talked about shooting landscapes or shooting wider scenes because it's just a 50 you're gonna get compression so opposed to having that wide lens or that 15 millimeter when you're shooting that same style of photo on a 50 inherently because of that focal range you will get more compression in your photo sometimes that looks good sometimes you don't want it if you don't want it and you've only got this tough you're getting it never really bothers me but that is something that i wanted to point out it's not too heavy of a lens but when you're comparing it to the nifty 50 it is considerably heavier something to keep in mind if space and weight is a concern to you now when it comes to vlogging this isn't the best lens i've never used this lens 15 to 35 pretty much exclusively now in my kit only goes on the camera when i am vlogging or if i'm standing in front of a ridiculous panoramic vista that needs to be captured as wide as possible i'm going to use the wide lens now the question that a lot of photographers do have especially beginners once you've gotten into photography you've been hooked on it you're thinking like what what is that next thing i would say continue to hone your skills and don't be influenced by all of the next things because there's always going to be something else and there's always going to be someone showing you what that next thing is i am that guy but that doesn't mean you buy it all of the time but if you are in the market for a new lens for something that delivers a specific look and you've seen that look in this footage and these photos that i've shown you that resonates with you if it inspires you i would say a 50 millimeter lens would be a great option for something to add to your arsenal but only if you need it if it specifically hits the mark in the style that you're looking for and you want that compression you want that great low light capability because it opens up to 1.2 on a fast lens that's sharp highly recommended but only if you need it or if you just have a ton of money in your board and you want something to play with then yeah go for it there's that too folks that's the 50 mm 1.2 it is a one of two lenses that are in my bag at all times and 95 of the time it is on my camera thank you to my friends at cuditet and clocks and colors for building me this hat you guys know i do a lot of work with clocks and colors and we have a lot of rings and fun stuff out there may or may not be a new collection coming soon i didn't tell you that thanks the guys over at clocks and thanks to the guys over at kudat for hooking this up i'm super pumped on it and it looks really good in my f-100 which i'm still working on that video i'm hyping it up big time now i really got to deliver and i'm starting to get nervous about it because it's taking a little too long [Music] bam clocks and colors fly the flag cuda tet what is up this video is brought to you by storyblocks it most certainly is that might have been an obnoxious way to approach this ad read so let me restart that what's up everybody peter mckinnon here welcome back to yet another another one recently i traveled down to meet my friends at kudat who recently i traveled downtown to meet my recently i traveled downtown to meet up i can't speak today kirk leptin stop trying to be funny you're not funny anyone else out there talk to themselves just me cool still writing notes all right let's try that one again from the top
