I don't think anyone in the band would even think about retreading familiar ground like what Klaatu was doing. Psychedelic pop, especially in the late 70s, would have been pretty creatively stagnant for the band as you could see the trajectory for the solo efforts of Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison. These three did more stripped-down productions, typical of a lot of 70s acts that started in the 60s because of the reaction against the more ornate and intricate sounds of the decade.
What I love about the Beatles is their tenacity to reject everything they've done prior and to move forward. When everyone was still exploring contemporary folk in 1965, they already started their foray into psychedelic. When everyone followed them into psychedelic and baroque pop, in 1968 they released The White Album - a stripped down experimental pop-rock LP with a plethora of sounds that would come in the 70s and even 80s.
Meanwhile, Emitt Rhodes was thought to be Paul McCartney's secret solo project.
Rhodes is like a one-man beatles band (but matching their mid-60s sound as a contemporary)
Was hoping this would be about Klaatu when I saw the title. Love me some Klaatu.
ELO anyone?
