The 'Author' of My Immortal Emailed Me, And Then It Got Worse

november i did a video about a famous fan fiction called my immortal and the weird mystery surrounding it you might have remembered it for being filmed with a 2006 style screen ratio the sound quality being equally 2006 and also for the fact that i was straining to get through every sentence because of whooping cough for those of you who weren't here for that the basic gist of the story is that in 2006 someone wrote a very bad harry potter fan fiction about a girl named ebony who was a satanist goth attending hogwarts all the canon characters were goths as well and changed their names to gothic things to represent this the fick is chock full of pretty much every bad fan fiction trope you can think of from bad spelling to overpowered self-inserts to total disregarding of the canon character's actual personalities equally interesting was the meta story in the author's notes the story purported to be written by a teenage girl named tara and edited by her friend raven and the author's notes contained its own story of the author and her relationship with her friend culminating in a fight between the two of them it's also worth mentioning that tara's account has claimed to be hacked several times and that first happened in november 2006 chapter 39 of my immortal claims to have been written by a girl who hacked and is trolling the author tara unlike the rest of the story it's written with good grammar and specifically makes fun of ebony what's weird about this is that in chapter 41 tara just straight up continues along with the rest of the story she doesn't delete the hacked chapters or even really acknowledge it she just goes silent and then posts the rest of the chapters all in one day which kind of raises the mystery of did it actually get hacked or is this made-up hacker part of the meta fiction the fix stopped updating back in mid-2007 tara claimed to be on vacation and promised to update when she came back which leads me to believe she's just still on vacation to this day a year later in october 2008 the second potential hacking happens first my immortal is removed from fanfiction.net it's still kind of mystery what happened here it's possible that the website themselves removed it as they had a history of removing bad fan fictions and other rule-breaking things in the past this is one of the reasons fanfiction.net is considered kind of dead nowadays compared to better sites like ao3 because your stuff isn't going to get randomly and non-transparently removed just because your writing sucks despite multiple requests from journalists as recently as 2015 the website has still refused to comment about whether or not it removed the story but it's also possible that a hacker took it down and there's a bit of evidence supporting this first of all an anonymous user on the tara gillespie fan live journal claimed to be a hacker in their own words my immortal was deleted because none of you bothered to review my story i have access to not only all of tara gillespie's account throughout the internet but also raven when tara got her new boyfriend to hack back into her account i decided to deleted my immortal as a warning if you do not review my story more of her stuff will be deleted i have done it once before and i will do it again i will hack into her new account and deleted everything on it that is a warning review my story the mention of tara's boyfriend and her account being hacked into is definitely an interesting one because the second piece of evidence that suggests hacking is that her profile got messed with as well it's not up on her page anymore but a fan fiction account devoted to preserving what her bio looked like at the time notes a few changes one of these is that gareth vandersleld is mentioned in her likes that's gonna be meaningless for most people but take note of that name because it's gonna keep popping up a lot throughout this the update also mentions that raven died and finally it adds a whole bunch of religion related stuff to her likes and dislikes and then finally in december 2009 a possible third hacking happens sometime around when this happens her profile is updated again either by a hacker or by tara herself which is interesting because the fit hasn't been updated in ages the gareth stuff and the religion content are removed and someone claiming to be friends with tara posts on the fan club livejournal basically saying look someone hacked her profile you all keep ruining a good thing if we can get her account back she'll post more nothing came of that and she never posted more so i mean if this was a real hacking and not all part of the trolling i guess she never got her account back particularly strange is the fact that to this day no one knows who wrote it tara's profile hasn't been touched since 2009 and there have been a number of false authorship claims since then one person even got a book deal by pretending to be tara and there were a number of other similarly buckwild claims to authorship if you're interested in that story in more detail you can watch my video here i made that video on my immortal more than half a year ago and haven't really thought about it much ever since until about a month ago when i got an email in my inbox from someone whose name was tara gillespie the email read not sure if you have a fanfiction.net account but if you do then contact xxx midnight golf xxx fangs tara the email also had a sort of number code at the end of it i guess to identify that whoever messaged midnight goth was who they said they were well me being me there was absolutely no way i was going to ignore this message i mean even if it turned out that this person had absolutely zero connection to tara in any way i have no intention of denying myself any kind of mystery or rabbit hole whether this was a rabbit hole that led me to the actual author of my immortal or a rabbit hole that led me to an elaborate scammer it was gonna be interesting either way so i replied i don't want to clickbait anyone this video isn't going to uncover the author of my immortal what it is going to uncover is an almost decade-long scam full of sock puppets fandom drama and for some reason bible fan because that's a thing i logged into my old fan fiction account which i'm not gonna share the name of because i don't need y'all reading my 12 year old wicket and razia's shadow fanfics and send a message to the midnight golf account copying the number code i'd gotten in my email i've slightly cut the conversation for time but in a nutshell here's how it started sarah said gothicgirl666 hotmail.com that's me i got your email your email had me very curious unfortunately i don't have access to bloody wrist anymore this was my backup account i thought i had lost this account as well i'm not sure if this is enough proof but i can assure you i wrote my immortal y'all the vibe in that moment was indescribable obviously i was skeptical i've seen a number of false my immortal claims over the years but the idea that i might have some way to solve one of my favorite internet mysteries was so fantastic i did some cursory clicking around and found out that the account was listed as a favorite on the original my immortal tara page that's more than i can say for any account that's claimed to write it in the past so i was cautiously optimistic on top of freaking out about the message to my friends i immediately launched into google mode the first thing i found was that he had written a bunch of my immortal parodies before and that he was known as todd gillespie in the past he'd apparently confessed to having written my immortal all the way back in 2008. back when maya mortal got removed from fanfiction.net for the first time and the story may or may not have been hacked at the time he didn't say his name was todd or admit to being a troll but he did use the account to repost my immortal and signed it as tara indeed todd was the first person to mirror my immortal back when it got removed from fan fiction titling it bring me to life he said hey this is tara's account and my boyfriend gareth vanderswell saved this once again keep that name in mind i also found an old deviantart profile from todd where he basically just talks about the fick claims he's from australia and seems to have gotten in some drama with the author of a less famous harry potter trophy he also mentions having written some my little pony stuff in the past on his real account and finally he says he's dyslexic i also found a wattpad fanfic he wrote called my immortal 2 wake me up inside i did a bit of reading and it's bad like my immortal was always rife with typos and it was sometimes hard to figure out what was being said like when she says womb instead of wand but this was bad like it was full of way more spelling errors than the original and is much more difficult to decipher and there are just fewer jokes in general also the author of this story also claims it's been hacked and there's yet another hacked chapter in the middle this isn't in and of itself proof that he didn't write it especially when we don't know anything about him yet but it's odd also much like that re-upload this also mentions her boyfriend gareth vanderseld gareth vandersweld is about to be a recurring character but again he's listed as one of the real tara's favorite writers and from what i can find tara added todd as a favorite author back in november 2007 so a year after the first hacking supposedly happened and five months after my immortals stopped updating forever he also started posting gothic related poetry on the midnight goth account the original page doesn't exist anymore but users of the terra fan forum have some of it saved here after asking him if it was okay to ask him more questions and him saying he'd be open to anything except his identity i started with the basics based on your profile and your name not being tara gillespie i'm guessing my immortal was a troll thick was raven a real person as well or was she also a part of the story if so do you still have access to raven's account i did some looking and it looks like you posted a lot of my immortal fan fiction parodies in the past why did you make a separate account to post parodies of your own story and why not confess to being tara on raven's account was tara's account ever actually hacked or was that part of the fiction as well i noticed your account is listed as a favorited one on tara's page who are the other favorite accounts on tara and raven's account besides raven are they also side accounts of taras or are they just unrelated pages it didn't take too long to get a reply back from todd he said raven was fake neither her nor terra truly existed sadly i've lost access to nearly all my old accounts from back then i was able to log in last time in 2008 during which i added this account i use this account to post my immortal too at the time i thought i had lost access to my original account the hacking was made up those other accounts are unrelated if i could access raven or tara's account i would confess there okay so this is interesting because as we know tara's profile last got updated in 2009 and todd here is claiming the last time he could access terror's account was 2008 which would be fine if she actually got hacked but based on him saying the hacking was fake she didn't so uh what gives the my immortal stuff happened over a decade ago by now honestly i don't expect whoever wrote it to have a full and perfectly dated memory of every single aspect of the story's timeline my immortal aficionados have put way more effort into categorizing this [ __ ] than tara probably ever actually did so this inconsistency is not inherently a horribly damning thing but it's absolutely a thing that's worth talking about also he didn't answer my question about the other favorite accounts so i kept at it i added a polite thank you for answering my questions and then asked since the other accounts were unrelated do you remember why they were added it looks like they're the only people involved who aren't you i'm also a little confused about the favoriting timeline you made this account to create and post my immortal 2 and didn't have access to the terra account anymore but this account is still listed among tara's favorite accounts i'm guessing you made the account and had bloody wrists favored it quite a while before you lost access to tara's account and posted my immortal 2. in that case do you remember why the account was made in the first place todd says can't exactly remember why i favored those accounts i think one of them had a fanfic i liked which has since been deleted oh when my immortal blew up i kept changing the email address linked to my account at the time i wasn't good at keeping track of all my troll accounts since then i've moved through several laptops and can't remember the exact email was doing the same thing with this account which is why i lost access for a few years luckily i somehow refound the email address midnight golf was meant to be a backup account if i lost access to bloody wrist or raven okay so he just straight up doesn't answer the question about why he lost access in 2008 and then the profile updated in 2009 just like he didn't answer what those other accounts were without further prodding at this point i was skeptical but still hopeful that maybe i could get some kind of answer from this guy i realized i wasn't going to get any more answers about the timeline so instead asked why todd stopped updating also this one was really just a personal curiosity but i also asked what dubia meant in terms of the original story if you don't know she claims to live in dubia in the final author's note of her story a place that most readers online have interpreted as dubai this is often used as proof that tara is a troll because she always talks about going to hot topic and those don't exist in dubai as well as the fact that it's just a very religiously conservative country and if she lives there she's probably not a satanist but when i brought this point up in my first video a lot of people suggested maybe dubia meant w w and she lived somewhere that started with a w like washington or wisconsin or i don't know winnipeg todd claimed w was supposed to be dublin because his family is irish which is i guess a satisfactory answer it's definitely no weirder than a ping dubai anyway he also mentioned that he just lost interest in the story and that when he did try to log back in he didn't have access so again there's that super weird inconsistency that he never addressed i'm also curious whoever the real author is why they didn't come forward when the whole rose crystal debacle happened basically this woman comes forward and claims she wrote my immortal in order to become internet famous to find her brother who's in foster care she'd self-published some decent books in the past and now she gets a book deal about her experience writing my immortal and claims that she has documentation which she sent to her publishers proving she wrote it it later turns out she forged these proof documents and her brother was never in foster care and then the publisher cancels her book deal it was a fun week to be on tumblr and the second i started realizing rose was a fake i was like why would the real author not come forward at this time so i decided to ask about that as well as push harder on this 2008-2009 thing were you online when the rose cristo claim happened or did you ever try to talk to her i have to imagine it's very weird to see someone publicly take credit for something you wrote especially when she temporarily got a book deal out of it that whole situation was very strange and i imagine even stranger from your perspective i noticed that the last time tara's profile was updated was in 2009 and you had lost access in 2008. you said earlier that the hackings were part of the fictional story was that also true for ffn taking my immortal down or was that you deleting the story did you get access back briefly and then lose access again or was that someone else updating had you come forward as the author of my immortal at that point yet if so why not use the terra account to confess to having done so [Music] addiction honestly if someone were the real author i would think that these would be some pretty easy questions to answer it's basically why did you stop writing were you really hacked what do you know about rose christo several hours later i hear back for the past couple of years i've not been active really when it comes to the my immortal community i remember back in 2017 when she came forward i obviously knew she wasn't being truthful i've never tried to contact her i prefer not to comment on her and her brother there's clearly a lot of tension between the two which i'd rather not get involved with i honestly wouldn't want a book deal because of my association with my immortal i would not want my real identity to be linked with that work if i was to ever get a book deal it would be based on the merit of my own writing not what i asked todd but cool that's rose christo even though she's not the author of my immortal reading her book would have been interesting i never deleted my immortal that must have been ffn themselves many stories during that period were removed due to the purge thanks very much to people like critics united the fan fictions on this account were deleted by myself as i mentioned before i would have used bloody risk to confess but at the time i was still trying to keep up the facade i was hoping people would connect the dots together i only came out as a troll in 2011 although a lot of people ignored it at the time he still didn't answer the [ __ ] question about getting access to the account ignoring it once sure maybe he didn't see it but at this point he's very obviously dancing around the question the thing about coming out as a troll in 2011 is true he did admit to being tara all the way back in 2008 it was right when her fick was taken down and he was the first person to re-upload it in character is tara and with a special mention of gareth vanderseld but the first time he specifically mentions being a troll who wrote the fick and his name not actually being tara is his 2011 confession so even if some parts of his story are sketchy this is absolutely true i add some more polite platitudes which for the sake of time i won't narrate i keep pushing on the timeline question and also i'm like how come you ended up deleting the fan fictions on this account before confessing to being tara was it just a matter of not wanting them up anymore in that case what was the 2009 profile update about since it happened after you lost access to your account did you gain access back and then lose it again and what was actually updated on the profile i deleted these stories because i thought critics united would target me next if a03 had existed then i probably would have moved everything across to there i never actually backed up my non-my immortal stories so they're kinda lost to me at least for now i planned to write a twilight fanfic using bloody wrist but never got around to it by the time i came around to admitting i was a troll i had lost access to the account okay so there's a lot here first of all he still isn't [ __ ] answering the access question this is the third time i've asked it there is no doubt that he's avoiding the question also sidebar for context critics united was an unofficial group of people on fanfiction.net founded in 2010 who considered themselves a sort of neighborhood watch on fan fiction i don't think they really exist much anymore but correct me if i'm wrong on that i could do a whole video on these guys but basically they'd go around seeking out fan fiction that broke site rules leaving a whole bunch of negative reviews for the stories on mass and then they'd mass report those stories to get them taken down and usually mass report everything else that author had ever written they'd report stories for having mature content too many typos song lyrics and all manner of other things even if stories didn't have mature content if they thought something alluded to mature content like a character's outfit was described as too suggestive or a story faded to black on a scene they decided might be explicit they'd report it they also straight up mention in their faqs that they leave reviews calling stories they don't like [ __ ] fix it's also worth mentioning that the fanfiction.net rules have a whole bunch of weirdly specific things that are banned you're not allowed to write a story that uses second person or chat speak for example and critics united would leave mass negative comments and reports against those i have many criticisms of the term karen mostly that nowadays it just gets used to mean any woman i don't like but based on its purest definition this whole thing is basically institutionalized parenthood i myself used to see these guys in comment threads often when i was 13 and into dystopian stuff because a big thing in hunger games fan fiction used to be stories where you could submit your own original characters to writers and then they'd write these big hunger game stories where your tributes would be killed off i'd often see these stories disappear because interactive stories aren't allowed and critics united reported them also i love the justification that interactive stories are banned because you're using someone else's characters you know as opposed to all the other fan fiction on a fan fiction site but i digress my point being my immortal parodies getting possibly taken down because of critics united is a cover story that makes sense todd deleted his fan fix in 2011 and critics united was formed in 2010 and was pretty active around then but that being said there's another event that happened around then that might have been a bit closer to the real reason he deleted his fix we know that his confession was on october 5th and by his own admission he deleted his stories before making the confession we also know from a web archive that his stories were up before october 3rd which means he deleted them sometime between the 3rd and the 5th this becomes interesting when you realize that on october 2nd a youtuber named cry uploaded a dramatic reading of my immortal that made its surge in popularity and just a day later todd was deleting his old fanfics and laying the groundwork to claim to be the author which to me feels quite a bit like writing off the increased popularity the fan fiction got in order to make a claim that would get a lot of attention the fact that this guy's been inactive until recently and only made the claim again after i made a popular video on the subject feels a bit like a smaller scale repeat of this so could he have been afraid of critics united and that's why he deleted those stories before confessing like maybe but i think the cry readings match up much more closely in terms of the timeline i once again asked him so to make sure i have everything right in my head you lost access to bloody wrist in both 2008 and 2009 and deleted the fix and confessed to being tara in 2011. todd replies with as mentioned before most of the hacking was faked i'm surprised people didn't click on the hacked chapter has the same style as the rest of the fanfic i'm going to be turning off private messages on my fan fiction account in 24 hours if you have any more questions please ask them now not sure how useful these answers are you probably still don't believe i wrote my immortal honestly i don't care now i've moved on from my immortal i'm a different person to what i was 14 years ago as cliche as it sounds i'm still we exchanged a few more words he told me he was closing his account shared some thoughts on pop culture and mentioned we shouldn't make light of mental illness or depression like my immortal did at times then as promised he closed his direct messages and my initial correspondence with todd was over so that was gonna be my video i was gonna be like hey here's a weird interaction i had with someone who's claimed to write my immortal and here's how it ties into some of these old mysteries i was weighing whether i should jokingly title it like the author of my immortal emailed me and made a tweet to something of that effect and i got writing on what our exchange was like how to tell if someone online is genuine and things like that and then i got an equally interesting email unless you're a hardcore my immortal historian if you already knew about the todd [ __ ] before my video it's probably because of a youtuber named redbard or kennedy she also did a video on my immortal a few months after mine that's longer and goes more extensively into several authorship claims it's a great video and she does a lot of other great stuff about internet history fan lore in general and just lots of really interesting topics definitely check her out i'd seen and enjoyed her videos before but the two of us had never actually spoken and then i got this email from her with the subject line tara emailed you in which she told me that she was curious who reached out to me and explained that she'd had her own history examining false my immortal claims obviously super curious if kennedy had also had any run-ins with todd i sent her a message on twitter and this is where stuff goes from mildly curious to absolutely buck [ __ ] wild strap in folks this is gonna be a weird one so i messaged kennedy looking forward to sharing my small anecdote about this guy who claimed to write my immortal but when i mentioned todd's name to her she had some choice words to say about him yeah uh todd's full of [ __ ] some of what i'm gonna tell you comes directly from kennedy's investigations and some of this is stuff the two of us discovered together after falling down the rabbit hole behold this tale of bible fan yes bible fan fiction dozens of sock puppets and a decade-long scam that culminated in a my immortal confession so first things first it's worth looking at the things that make todd's confession unique first of all is the fact that he was one of tara's favorite authors though that may or may not have happened after her account was hacked depending on whether or not the hackings were actually real second of all is the fact that he was the first person to re-upload my immortal after it got taken down albeit with a weird note about raven being dead and last of all is the odd question of gareth vandersweld his name comes up under tara's likes right around when she adds todd's account it's mentioned in the author's notes of todd's re-upload and he's a character in todd's far worse than the original my immortal sequel so who the [ __ ] is he googling around leads us to two things first a page about a series of troll fan fictions called the prayer warriors which are these weird christian themed troll fix about converting various characters in the percy jackson series from satanism started in 2014 by an author named thomas brown and his cousin ebony brown remember those names because we will come back to this later for now for all we know they included gareth vanderschleld as an homage to my immortal but this isn't where he's from the second thing a search for gareth vander slelt gives us is a story called the book of sheamus written in august 2007 that is to say several months before the my immortal stuff with gareth happened this is the earliest mention i can find of gareth vanderschlald and it's reasonable to say that this is where he came from so what is the book of sheamus it claims to be a fanfiction of the bible yes bible fanfiction is a thing and it seems to be written by christians and atheists alike published by an author named milo of water milo also published stories titled the first and second letters of toby the name toby will also be relevant later and if you look at milo's favorite authors it's a whole bunch of accounts with extremely similar names using the name of element format so herald of air caleb of sand etc and they all published similarly titled stories too books titled things like the letter of milo the letter of kenneth the letter of alec the book of max basically just a bunch of biblical sounding books with modern names they're all very weird to read and i'm not entirely sure what they're all trying to say based on their extreme similarities in names similar writing styles the fact that they almost exclusively published bible fan fiction and the fact that almost all the accounts were made in 2007. it's reasonable to assume milo of water herald of air caleb of sand jenny verse sylvia of wood and zachary of wood were probably all run by the same person also if you check their stories reviews with a few exceptions it seems to be the same few people reviewing all of these stories for example a user named firefly magicka also created in 2007 and also a fan of bible fan fiction used to leave a lot of negative comments but more interestingly there's an account called bored tired and not okay that repeatedly leaves negative comments on a large number of these ficks saying stuff like my name is toby and i'm gonna rip up your book and this has nothing to do with the bible so delete it and this is a waste of time so get rid of it there's also a review on the book of sheamus making fun of critics united board tired and not okay seems to have tracked down stories by almost every milo alt and left negative reviews on them and here's our good friend todd or midnight goth also leaving a negative review on one of the alt account stories another fun little detail is that at one point todd seems to have co-written a my immortal parody fan fiction where he named his main character milo so a bit of a connection there i also want to point to this comment from bored tired and not okay on a story called the book of connor i'm getting sick of you sheamus people we all know you are all the same person just using billions of accounts to make it seem as if it has many followers please just delete all these books and leave us to be it is not a joke anymore i am not laughing okay so at this point this is already getting weird and you might be like wait what does this have to do with my immortal again so let's just recap what just happened midnight goth or todd who claims to write my immortal keeps adding stuff about a character named gareth vandersleld gareth vanderstald is from a bible fan fiction by an author who seemingly made multiple alt accounts to post a bunch of very similar bible stories todd is involved with the bible fan fiction community and has left negative reviews on this stuff in the past as has this guy who claims his name is toby and seems to track down and flame nearly everyone but wait i've seen toby before and that's because a few months before todd toby also claimed to write my immortal one fun thing about fanfiction.net is that even if you change your username there's a number id code associated with your username that always stays the same toby's is 607689 which is how we know that he's had several different usernames over the years like benry the confessor and if you look through toby's forum posts you can see that on february 1st 2011 he started two threads one titled i wrote my immortal which has since been nuked and later one called i am not tara gillespie where he says a hacker broke into his account and posted a false confession that he wrote my immortal okay sure he also signs it the bratman evidently one of his old usernames this is fun because that means that even though the confession thread was nuked we can see that other people have a record of the confession it's frequently called the batman confession instead of the bratman which is probably a typo that happened somewhere down the line and got passed around like internet telephone the confession is long so i won't read all of it out loud but a few important things to note are he claims to have been a co-writer on the story having written it with a friend he was 13 at the time he wrote it he was in charge of all the pop culture references and was inspired by spyro fan side note toby's current profile has a lot of spyro related content on it he got locked out of the account after chapter 15 and the other author is responsible for everything else to do with it which really convenient way to avoid having to answer any hard questions about the hackings and finally he mentions that he's dyslexic in real life so again he deletes this confession just a day later and claims to have been hacked which is fun he also made a side account just two days later also called the bratman where he talks a bit more about himself he mentions that his name is toby skeet that he was born in 1991 was born in england but lives in new zealand again mentions spyro and talks about hating the book of sheamus he also has a my little pony fanfiction up this account and his other account are on each other's favorites list also toby's bratman account has directly interacted with todd's stuff here's a fiction press poem about religion written by one of the gareth vandersleild accounts and here's toby reviewing it and saying it's good hmm okay so we have todd who used to live in the british isles and moved to australia is dyslexic likes bible fan fiction writes poetry has written my little pony fan fiction has a problem with the author of the book of sheamus has a fixation with gareth vanderseld and claimed to write my immortal in 2011. and we have toby who used to live in britain and moved to new zealand is dyslexic in 2011. and like i mean todd is toby skeet right like they're obviously the same person with very little done to disguise that fact they have different birthdays and their backstories about moving from the british isles to oceania are slightly different but that's basically it as far as the differences go they're even about the same age todd said in 2012 that he was a university student making him probably around 18 to 20 in 2012 and toby says he wrote my immortal in 2006 as a 13 year old making him 19 in 2012 they'd both be about 27 today so todd or toby or whatever you want to call him neither of those are his real name but let's just stick with toby skeet for now because he uses it in more places seems to have confessed to having written my immortal twice over a period of several months once claiming he was a co-writer and once claiming he wrote it alone we also know he's made multiple alt accounts for himself there's the bratman there's the one that used to be benry the dude was really into having multiple accounts for the same purpose kind of reminds me of someone else i know but anyway this would be weird enough on its own if the guy just had like four or five alts and kept trying to get clout for writing my immortal but it turns out toby has way more accounts and identities that are pretty easy to track down and this tiny little web soon becomes a [ __ ] of weird so how much deeper does this go we haven't even gotten started toby also has a fiction press account also called the bratman where he wrote 52 different stories also fixated on religion and poetry and the same themes he's focused on on his other accounts he mentions his account is retired the same phrasing used on the main bratman account and on the todd jalesby account and links to his newer but less active account matthew keat he has two stories on there which he's also uploaded to a wattpad account that has the same name and one additional my little pony fanfic based on atlas shrugged about how capitalism is good and giving food away for free is evil which is a sentence i'm so sorry i had to speak into existence but if i had to read it for this video so do all of you okay so he may not have written my immortal but he does write bad fan fiction now under the identity of matthew keat remember how i said earlier that you can tell which old usernames are tobys because they're all linked to the same fanfiction id code it turns out our boy also used to call himself toby foster on there this is fun because toby foster with the id number 607689 in the dining room is also embroiled in another fan fiction community scandal remember how gareth vandersalt also shows up in another bad fan fiction series called the prayer warriors about percy jackson characters defeating satanists with the power of the bible and how it was written by two cousins named thomas and ebony brown let's talk about their deal for a sec in 2012 an author named thomas brown under the username believer in christ began to publish a percy jackson troll fick called the prayer warriors the story later got harry potter and my little pony themed sequels but the gist of it is that it was about a christian named jerry killing off the percy jackson characters with prayer and religion random bible verses were littered throughout it it used misogynistic terms for women and was poorly written and of course much like most bad fanfic the author was very upset whenever he got a bad review the author is also pretty obviously obsessed with my immortal referencing it multiple times throughout the fan fiction and even quoting it verbatim at certain points this line is straight up just a line from my immortal but with christian instead of satanist the story has 17 likes and 416 reviews at the time of this writing which is a hell of a ratio also in case the dates are confusing to you that's because this is a re-upload of the first three books in the prayer warriors saga oh yeah there were multiple books of this the prayer warriors never attained the same degree of notoriety that my immortal did but it definitely had some kind of following it had its own tv tropes page a couple writers have done their own line-by-line sportings of it and the discussion page has quite a few people asking around about it as previously mentioned the story around the prayer warriors is that it was written by two cousins thomas brown and ebony brown and yes the name ebony automatically set off alarm bells for me too once again there were multiple alt accounts that thomas and ebony used there was the main account believer in christ there was thomas finn brown there was ebony maria brown note by the way that ebony wrote bible poetry and fan fiction about my little pony and my immortal and there was just plain ebony brown so between the two supposed writers of the prayer warriors there were at least four alts obviously thomas and ebony's story quickly attracted a lot of trolls most of them weren't too intensely dedicated to the story they'd leave a couple negative reviews and maybe do a live reading of it but they weren't obsessed or anything but the more you read comments and discussion forums about the prayer warriors the more a couple of names really start to stick out first of all there's a user named idiocy with an s who frequently leaves hate comments on the fick and even wrote his own anti-prayer warriors fan fiction supposedly with a friend he also had another alt idiocy the crusader and secondly someone named benry and if you think this name sounds familiar that's because benry the confessor is one of toby's old usernames it's the same account that's now called bored tired and not okay you can even still see some of his comments on old prayer warriors stuff sometimes as benry and sometimes as another of his aliases the bratman together idiocy and toby he's known as benry for most of this but we're still talking about toby here bashed mocked and generally trolled thomas brown and ebony brown ebony even alleged that idiocy kept trying to hack into her accounts because i guess people named ebony getting hacked is just a common theme in this video another thing that's worth mentioning about idiocy is that he's also pretty into bible fanfiction his fan fiction account has since been wiped but you can find a web archive of some of his old stories almost all of them are solely focused on the thomas brown character stories making fun of the prayer warriors stories based on the prayer warriors in general and just generally revealing that idiocy's only personality traits seemed to be hating thomas brown the only non-prayer warriors related content he seems to have created are one a submit your own character percy jackson fan fiction novel and two a piece of bible poetry about lucifer so basically everyone here toby toby playing todd ebony brown and idiocy all seem to be in this very specific niche of bible-themed poetry fan fiction interesting idiocy and toby continue to troll thomas and ebony brown and even again supposedly hack into ebony's accounts thomas brown gets so fed up with the two of them that he actually puts them into his story just to violently kill them off he also includes a line about how toby or benry supposedly wrote my immortal he writes toby and idiocy's death into his stories multiple times they weren't his only trolls but they were the ones thomas seemed the most fixated on and the ones who seemed the most fixated on thomas and they were also the only ones who seemed to occupy the exact same niche that thomas did that is being into my immortal percy jackson and bible fan fiction themed poetry suffice it to say all these accounts were obviously connected at the same time that toby and idiocy were obsessively leaving negative comments on the prayer warriors and thomas and ebony were obsessively responding to them another account under the name noah mania popped up nowadays his account is called boat builder though you can tell it's him from the id number so the name noah is obviously a biblical reference and indeed noah mania has also only ever written fan fiction in the bible category by the way noah also claims to have dyslexia which means that besides being into bible fan fiction that's another thing noah has in common with toby and todd noah posts a fan fiction under the bible category with the title god is dead including some interesting allegations about thomas brown's true identity essentially he claimed that thomas and ebony were real people and that he was tom's atheist brother he both claimed that he was disowned for his family for being an atheist and lived with his friends but also that he was the one proofreading and editing the prayer warriors and was periodically adding more and more trolling content in my immortal references to mock it obviously this is a batshit accusation but almost all of the comments on this page seem to believe noah and are supportive of him and his journey in response thomas puts noah into the story killing him off as well by having him violently stoned to death so thomas has now been trolled by three different bible fanfiction loving critics all of whom he's killed off and one of whom is claiming to be his brother around the same time in mid-2012 noah supposedly hacks into thomas accounts and deletes all of his stories putting prayer warrior themed parodies up instead a few months later ebony's account is also supposedly hacked and her prayer warriors themed my little pony stories are deleted on her deviantart which sadly no longer exists she supposedly accuses idiocy of doing the hacking she then also makes a side account enemy brown once again my mortal reference so everyone's hacking everyone and deleting these stories and uploading parody stories and it's all very confusing and then something else interesting happens noah messages idiocy with a very interesting claim which idiocy publishes as a story in the bible fan fiction section noah says okay i will tell you the truth i think you deserve this my brother thomas is dead he has been dead for the past year so i pretended to be him yeah i admit i am disturbed i am [ __ ] up who cares okay let's unpack this first noah claims to be thomas's brother who's doing some editing for him then he claims that actually thomas has been dead the entire time and noah has created a fake account role-playing as his dead christian brother in order to write a troll fan fiction about christianity idiocy disbelieves him and mocks him readily now you might have already guessed that the story was going in this direction but here's where it goes from weirder to weirdest people on the prayer warriors tv tropes discussion page have been following along with a lot of this drama providing live reactions to the various hackings and deletions and trying to keep up with this drama between thomas ebony toby idiocy and noah thomas brown on his fake twitter also keeps talking about todd and accusing him of being a liar in a very roundabout way that kind of feels like promoting todd's book he also peppers in the fact that todd and toby are the same person people are speculating about what's going on with them when toby leaves a comment on the forum claiming to know thomas's true identity asking one of the commenters to email him for more information and then a user named taylor ashmere who's done part of her own live reading of the story before starts to notice something's up in taylor's own words i'm not a hundred percent sure on this but i think i might know who wrote some parts of the prayer warriors a few people keep mentioning this guy taylor provides a link to toby's benry the confessor page i doubt he wrote any of the later prayer warriors fanfics but i do think he had something to do with the first two and maybe parts of the third his style seems similar to thomas brown what do you guys think taylor starts to draw parallels between toby's writing style and thomas's writing style noticing that they both seem to use the exact same weird punctuation quirks when they type she also notes that despite the thomas brown character supposedly being american he doesn't seem like he was written by an actual american another user notices that despite thomas supposedly being american he sometimes slips in british spellings and british slang accidentally like using crisps instead of chips given the fact that toby claims to be originally from england this sets off a lot of alarm bells taylor puts forth her theory toby or benry the confessor and thomas are actually the same person she doesn't notice that toby once claimed to co-write my immortal or make the connection that toby and todd are the same person but she also connects toby's history of making alt accounts to my immortal in general this might be a risky claim but i did some more digging on toby and i think i might have found some information that might be pretty interesting i'm not a hundred percent sure on this but i think toby might also have something to do with my immortal although i don't have that much proof to back this up toby wrote some troll fix a few years ago and spammed them across the bible forums on fanfiction.net in one of those troll fix it's a character named gareth vandersleld about that time midnight goff aka tara jalesby posted her sequel to my immortal which contained a character named gareth vandersleld this might not be true but it's interesting anyway honestly bless you taylor unless you're somehow also toby which i'll touch on briefly later in the comments people are starting to speculate as to whether that means toby is also noah and ebony brown which yes if thomas brown isn't a real person neither are his goth cousin or his atheist brother who is also pretending to be him taylor also claims to have contacted toby and that he admitted to being thomas brown shortly after this the confessions break loose first multiple people on the tv tropes page claim that ebony made a confession thread admitting to being a troll on her deviantart page idiosy posts a story on the bible fanfiction section where he admits to being one of thomas brown's alts similar to how toby said he wrote my immortal and then claimed he was hacked idiocy will later try to walk this back as a prank in the comments toby foster also admits to being a thomas brown alt he also claims that he only wrote the first few chapters of the story and that someone else did the rest note that this is remarkably similar to the format of his my immortal confession where he claims to only have written the first few chapters so in effect this means that toby operated a total of at least 10 different accounts believer in christ thomas finn brown ebony brown enneby brown ebony marie brown noah mania idiocy todd gillespie his secondary toby account and of course his main account which is benray or bratman or toby keat or toby skeet or bored tired or whatever he changes his username to next and that's not even mentioning all the different book of sheamus related accounts or gareth vanderschleld which would bring the count up to 16. using these different accounts who were all toby he wrote a troll fan fiction and then populated the comments with sock puppets who would leave bad reviews so that he could kill off his own alts and his stories he then made up multiple fake family members to kill off and have internal drama with and pretended to hack himself multiple different times this is just ms scribe but more christian huh now just as a side note here because i'm sure i'm gonna get some comments about it toby confessing to being thomas brown isn't proof that toby is thomas brown after all he also confessed to writing my immortal multiple times but unlike tara gillespie where the timelines don't add up at all there's a lot of evidence that these accounts were both sock puppets of the same person there's the striking similarity in writing styles the fact that thomas inexplicably uses british slang the same grammatical quirks popping up on both accounts the fact that these accounts only ever seem to talk about and interact with one another and of course the fact that all of these accounts seem to have the exact same learning disabilities interests in my little pony and a penchant for writing bible-themed poetry so yeah this is all one guy and he's not even particularly good at hiding it this doesn't specifically fit into the whole prayer warriors thing but there are a few other accounts i'm also pretty sure were toby sock puppets one was an account called you suck one who frequently left negative reviews on basically every piece of work created by a toby alt this account was recently updated in april 2020 which is coincidentally around the same time a bunch of other tobii accounts started updating using the phrasing this account is retired which a bunch of other tobii accounts also used his only favorite story on his account is an ebony brown story and he doesn't interact with anyone but toby alts so i'm fairly sure this guy is also toby there's another account the real believer in christ who posted yet another apology claiming to be thomas brown and i'm almost 100 sure this one is also toby for one the account uses the same weird apostrophe thing that toby as thomas and toby as benry do and in the reviews we have noah arguing with this account and noah is also using the same [ __ ] weird apostrophe there's also a comment from idiocy who is also toby saying toby is thomas which thanks toby there's also an account called liamater who claims to be a christian living in new zealand and wrote a whole bunch of bible-themed poetry liam was a member of toby's bible-themed role-playing group on fanfiction.net which was based on the book of sheamus which seemed to be mostly populated by toby alts and a couple of other people who seemed to be unaware that they were interacting with multiple accounts all run by one bored kiwi teenager for example besides liam we can quickly find ebony brown enemy brown thomas brown and two todd jalesby accounts on the forums though funnily enough one of the only other users on the bible forum who i'm almost 100 sure isn't toby made a joke once about toby and ebony being the same person so this is pure speculation so take it with a grain of salt but this made me curious because another my immortal authorship confession from 2008 when the hackings were happening was from a guy whose username was liamy or liam y i think it's liamy his bio mentions apologizing for claiming to be tara and for saying raven is dead you know like toby did liam like both of toby's accounts was a writer of my immortal parody fan fiction and claims to have written both my immortal and my immortal 2 wake me up inside which as we know is a todd original in concert with the fact that there's a liam here who's connected to toby and another liam here who has the exact same home country friends and interests as toby it's reasonable to assume both liam's are probably toby alts if so this would bring the number of confirmed alts up to 20. i also want to briefly touch on something i've wondered a bit while making this video and that's the question of taylor ashmere the tv tropes detective who cracked a lot of this in short toby or not toby that is the question i don't think taylor is also toby but it's something that is possible the username doesn't exist anywhere else on the internet and the taylor account has only ever made edits and comments pertaining to that one fan fiction despite claiming to be a fan of bad fanfiction in general and we know that toby has a history of accusing his own alts of being alts like when he comments on his own bible fan fiction he posted as milo and says they're all obviously one person he seems to have a thing for arguing with himself and wanting to expose himself and it's possible taylor is another example of this taylor was also the first person to claim to have saved copies of the story after it got deleted which is the same thing toby did when re-uploading my immortal after the hackings she also seems to take for granted that midnight goth is actually tara which for such a skilled detective just surprises me in the face of everything else also all the letters from thomas are in taylor ashmere which is a fact i really want to mean something but i couldn't come up with any cool anagrams so it almost certainly doesn't also toby todd thomas t names seem to be a thing however taylor's own live blogging of the story doesn't seem to match the toby brand so i think she was probably just a very competent internet detective and not a toby alt but i wanted to put that out there as it's something i've wondered about myself i'm so sorry for the delay in this this is sarah about nine hours after filming as evidenced by the half removed makeup and pajamas and visible exhaustion i just discovered some [ __ ] first of all i am now almost 100 convinced taylor ashmere was indeed a toby alt looking back on those my immortal forums the person who made the post in 2009 saying hey tara is hacked is called flynn ashmere it's a weird coincidence so i searched that up and it brought me to a blank facebook page for taylor flynn ashmere bingo the profile picture for that is some weird meme and is very obviously a sock puppet and not a real person so i looked back at the post on the forum and there it is that [ __ ] weird apostrophe that no one but the toby alts uses he was taylor ashmere he was flynn ashmir he was on the forums claiming to be tara gillespie's friend he was outing himself on purpose again my soul has left my body and like his taylor account was the one to point out the apostrophe thing in the first place so he obviously knew and was doing it on purpose that led me and kennedy to look through more old forum posts and do you remember that really shouty one about the 2008 hacker that i narrated dramatically you won't read my yeah that one so that post has the [ __ ] apostrophe too it's all toby there's also a post from gareth vandersleld that also uses the apostrophe where he begs the user not to re-upload tara's stories and he posts a link to his own fan fiction anonymously claiming it's terra all this leads me to think it's extremely possible that we've found the answer to at least one my immortal mystery and that's why the story got deleted off of fanfiction.net it's very possible that toby did somehow gain access to tara's account so that he could delete her stories add religion and gareth vanderseld to her likes and then re-upload it on his own account with a mention of gareth to reap the clout it's a weird roundabout plan because like if you have access to tara's account and you want people to think you're her why not just make a post saying you have a new account but also this is the same guy who keeps making anonymous accounts exposing his own alts and plans and accusing his own alts of being alts it's like toby doesn't want his plans to succeed because when they fail he gets more attention which i know i'm playing into by making this video but y'all with the knowledge that taylor ashmere was probably toby and the fact that he made the forum post claiming to hack tara i think toby deleted my immortal this is speculation but given the fact that that post from 2009 claiming tara was hacked was almost certainly toby and the fact that the hacking may have involved removing all of toby's [ __ ] it's super possible that someone else managed to log into tara's account in 2009 and change the password which is how toby knew it was hacked in the first place and why he made a panicking post trying to get access back whoever has the account now whether it's the real author or a different hacker i hope you're taking good care of it so this one guy whom we know is toby has at least 20 alt accounts that he uses to flame and argue with himself if you check out his todd gillespie profile on deviantart you can even see a number of arguments he's had with the now defunct ebony account as well as with a thomas account and they're frequently in contact on other rpg forums calling each other pathological liars and such this is so [ __ ] weird like what's his end game with a fandom scammer like ms scrive who also made a million alts to argue with herself she had a clear goal she wanted to make her main account seem victimized so that she could elicit sympathy from famous fan fiction writers and be their friend awful but at least there's some kind of human motivation there but toby barely interacted with anyone who wasn't himself i can only assume a mix of boredom and desire for attention but honestly i'm kind of lost here now at this point in mai and kennedy's research we started googling around for some of the alts and ended up finding this guy's real full name his youtube and his facebook i'm obviously not going to share this guy's real identity but we did find out that he's a musician who lives in new zealand and that his real name overlaps with many of the fake identities he uses like let's say he had a fake identity named john and his real last name was johnson we also found out hilariously that one of the names he uses for his alt is his [ __ ] stage name as a musician like good god imagine you go to some random club in new zealand and some guy introduces himself and you realize you recognize his name from my little pony fan fiction and bible poetry online or you listen to a musician you like and you look him up later and he wrote an infamous bible troll trolpic where he kills off his critics who are also him my soul would leave my body for the most part toby's real name and personal life stuff aren't relevant to this video so i'm not going to include it also i just don't want to dox this guy there was definitely a moment once we found out who this guy was where we were like wait what are we doing right now only a couple things are relevant to further confirming that this dude is every single one of his fake personas including todd one of these is that toby using his real name claimed to be making a wait can i say that am i going to get demonetized one of these is that toby using his real name claimed to be making a cov id playlist with the song isolation by john lennon on it he also mentions green day in the context of that playlist shortly afterwards he comments the same playlist including isolation and a green day song onto a harry potter fan fiction using his todd jalesby account he also posts a spyro fan fiction in his facebook notes on october 6th 2011 which is later uploaded to fanfiction.net under a new completely different username on october 26th meaning he has yet another alt that he created just for spyro fanfiction he also does not follow me on twitter but has been replying to tweets about my video on my immortal suggesting he either knew exactly where to look despite me not mentioning todd's name yet or that there was some my immortal name searching going on his facebook also mentions a number of the fake identities he's used most of which we already know and one that may or may not be a reference to another piece of bible fan fiction he's written i would like to point out that this man is now in his late twenties despite most of this drama happening around 2011 to 2013 a surprising number of these accounts have begun to resurface recently suggesting something must have pulled toby from his slumber unfortunately i fear it may have been my my immortal video that gave him the inspiration to try to come forward again back when toby made his my immortal authorship claims as todd no one really took that much notice of him this is for a variety of reasons but one of those reasons is that almost the exact same time people discovered the acid bath sisters who started making videos as raven and tara so everyone was pretty much just focused on them as potential authors and no one really paid attention to todd's my immortal claims it's very possible that todd sees this as a window of opportunity to get back the clout he never got the first time round though if that is the case he's sadly out of luck because i hear the girl who played raven is making the rounds on tick tock again and honestly we stan so toby toby toby toby and the other toby's were all on a bible rpg forum together one day toby publishes a bible fan fiction called the book of sheamus and creates more tobiis to post similar stories toby and toby leave negative reviews on these stories later toby claims to have co-written my immortal but retracts his claim a day later only a couple months after toby claims to be tara gillespie the author of my immortal re-uploading her stories and putting a book of sheamus reference into the re-upload note that because one of tara's hackings coincides with tara adding toby is one of her favorite authors it's possible toby may have genuinely hacked into tara's account later on toby also claims to write maya mortal and publishes a story co-written with toby shortly afterward toby writes a series of bible-themed troll stories toby toby and toby troll them so toby kills toby off toby then claims to be toby's brother then toby claims that toby's brother is dead and that he was posing as him the entire time toby keeps hacking into toby's accounts and deleting stories and finally toby confesses to being toby and toby confesses to being toby toby continues arguing with toby on deviantart and on bible rpg forums years later after i make a video on my immortal toby emails me and doesn't answer my questions so me and another youtuber go on a quest to discover toby is at least 20 different people and also a new zealand musician's stage name i talk for an hour at a camera and explain this while gradually losing my sanity i've had a lot of feelings while researching and writing for this video confusion as to why toby went to all this effort to create tens of soft puppets just to argue with himself this guy has written so much on all his profiles hundreds of thousands of words of poetry and fan fiction albeit most of it not very good but i mean that's real effort and it's clear that the effort expended by pretending to be all these different people over the years could have very easily been put into simply practicing normal writing we actually reached out to toby both via the address he emailed me from and on facebook asking whether he would admit to running these accounts what his end game was and because of my own curiosity whether he was taylor ashmere as well at the time of this filming i never received a response i also see a lot of focus on religion throughout when toby may or may not have hacked tara's profile and added content about gareth vandersweld he also added content about tara hating certain religions sometimes toby claims to be a christian sometimes toby claims to be an atheist and the poetry that's still up seems to reveal a lot of genuinely complicated feelings about his religion it's possible that on some level some of these weird trolls and inflammatory comments about religion may have been a way for a young teen who grew up christian to process some of those conflicting feelings i'll admit that my feelings on toby aren't positive he's a grown-ass man who spent over a decade lying to people and continued to lie to me in hopes of milking a video out of it which i guess technically worked if not probably in the way that he expected at the same time after following around 15 years of this guy's internet content i don't just see a pathological manipulator who's trying to cause drama around him i mean that too but on a larger level i also just see a lot of loneliness the rise of mass social media has seen a rise in what some people call digital self-harm the term has two meanings the first is doing things to hurt yourself online reading messages you know will upset you over and over again doom scrolling through the news on autopilot participating in harmful communities and other such behavior but the second definition refers to a rising trend of teenagers mostly boys essentially cyber bullying themselves anonymously posting hurtful comments about themselves online one journal found that 13 of young boys have done it to themselves and it's often a mix of crying for help and seeking the attention and validation of others it's a deeply maladaptive behavior and it's one that's reportedly become more common over the years and i don't know when i see the dozens of hours the hundreds of thousands of words of writing that this one person has put into posting abusive content about himself online for years i can't help but see the intense loneliness that has to come with that kind of behavior especially because unlike in cases like ms scribe there doesn't seem to be a material goal or endgame it's just one guy talking into the void at himself over and over again cultivating dozens of fake arguments and personas along the way toby didn't write my immortal but in my search for the author of a classic fan fiction about vampires goths and satanism i found a story about isolation attention and religious conflict that i wasn't expecting to uncover if anything toby's story is a reminder not only to be skeptical of manufactured drama online but also how enticing and addictive drama can be to the point where he's spent years attempting to attract and cultivate it and finally it's a reminder that authenticity and sincerity are [ __ ] hard a lot of toby's poems appear as genuine and sincere attempts to process his feelings on religion through poetry and if he'd put all this time and effort into working through those feelings and publishing more stories as himself he could be a lot better off but hiding behind fake identities making works based on irony and using a million different sock puppets to publish this bible stuff requires a lot less vulnerability and is a lot easier to shrug off it's not the healthy choice in the long run but it is the easier one most of us aren't as extreme as toby but it's easy to hide our feelings our vulnerabilities our genuine excitement about the things we love behind veneers of irony and mockery and i think toby is a key cautionary tale for what happens when we let that get too far my hope for all of us toby included is that we can start to be a little more genuine about ourselves and the things we love and struggle with and also that we do our part to reduce the amount of bible-themed troll fanfictions in the world no pun intended but godspeed toby's tale was a real life story of manufactured drama loneliness and isolation but if you're looking for something that explores those themes in fiction in an interesting compelling way i would recommend you'll check out the movie amnesia it's set in the 90s and it starts out with this german woman living on her own and this remote spanish island because of the war she doesn't want to come to terms with her identity and wants to leave it all behind much like toby's story it doesn't initially read as one of loneliness until it's disrupted and she meets a young german man who lives next door and god i don't want to spoil too much but it gets really good it's about trauma and isolation techno music and cooking and you can watch it on movie a site that lets you stream high quality
