the Apple anyway he got away with it you know one of the ancient Greeks most important gods was Tiki or Taiki goddess of fortune the especially who loves you baby forget it if tanky loved you you had it made the ancient Romans they were real players they risk fortunes on the roll of the dice and lotteries in the Middle Ages the Spaniards bet their shirts on card games what in the 1300s a misguided kinga too decreed that gambling illegal but any number of other monarchs thought otherwise and they forced would-be reformers keep their hands off the high rollers of the day English translation you can't keep a get and wee man away from the action you know the American Indians they love gambling for centuries before the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock the colonists helped win them over by introducing them to playing cards in fact America was founded on a gamble with a Revolutionary War supported by a lottery and now all those gamblers through the centuries they would have found in our casinos just the kind of action they were looking for and of all the casino games the one they dig the most blackjack because blackjack gives you the best shot against the house believe it or not you listen to telly boys and girls and you just might be playing with the houses money blackjack you know a lot of people never get past the slots they get shook up just thinking of some of the other games like blackjack you know there's nothing wrong with the slots but if that's all you're playing you're missing out on a lot of the action and a better shot and walking away a winner so settle down relax and listen up because I'm gonna teach you to play blackjack my guy played blackjack you will have a better shot at winning and you'll have more fun and I'm not just gonna teach you how to play I'm gonna show you how not to be overwhelmed by the casino the noise the dealer and other players I'm gonna show you what to do how to do it and when to do it okay let's get started by telling you how blackjack is played you get as many cars as you like that add up to 21 or as close to 21 as you can get without going over that magic number 21 the dealer does the same now if you go over 21 you lose your bust if the dealer goes over 21 and you don't you win if you're closer to 21 than the dealer you win again if it's a tie you push that means you don't win and you don't lose hey what could be simpler than that now there's three things to remember the dealer's must take another card when they have 16 or less the dealer's have to stay when they reach 17 and most important if you and the deal of both bust you both go over 21 you lose there hey baby you don't even have to remember the first two of course they're written right here on the table now let's look at the cast of characters you'll see around as you play this Center area is called the blackjack pit and that guy he's the floor man he's the one who keeps everything running nice and smooth of the tables next to him you see the pit boss he's like the stage manager of a Broadway show he runs the whole floor in this part of the casino now you won't have to deal much for these two unless you have major problems and that's very unlikely uh-huh now here's a little later you will deal with the cocktail waitress the drinks they're free but still even the hot stuff okay I want you to win and thank here's the star of the show the dealer the dealers the one who keeps the action moving she knows what she's doing you better believe it she works miss you that holds for and sometimes as many as eight decks of cards that makes it tougher to figure what's been played and what hasn't and on alright the drop box where she put your cash when you sit down to start to play after taking your cash she gives you chips from the chip rack right next to the drop box and this is where you put your chips when you make a bet it's called the betting square there's only one thing missing here the players and this is probably the only time you'll see a casino like this but I want you to get used to the action a casino is alive it moves it's it's crazy here's what it's like with the actions turned on [Applause] and here's how a blackjack table will look to you as you walk up to it now don't feel intimidated just because there are other players already there they want you to get into the game there's room for seven but before we pick a seat let's decide if this is the table we want to be at does it feel right to you we should double-check the plaque that shows the tables minimum to be sure it's comfortable for us hmm let's see minimum let's find out huh it seems like a good game to start it right if the limits are right for you just walk away now what do you think of the dealer do you like her does she seem friendly is she too precise does she remind you of a teacher you had you didn't like or didn't like you let me tell you if you sit down to the table and things just don't feel right it's like giving the dealer a wild card it makes it much harder to win always remember you have these players rights the deal can make you play faster than you'd like the dealer can't make you take another card or keep you from taking another card most of all the dealer can't make you stay at her table what you can do is intimidate you not that she wants to but because she's so good at handling of the cards and knows the game so well she can intimidate you into playing and making decisions faster than you'd like now you have to keep calm and stay cool remember it's all in your head because there's no way the dealer can change the cards she can't make any choices she's got to hit on 16 and stop at 17 don't let her get to you but if she does just up and away and find another table okay how about the other players nothing too sharp too loud hey baby they don't count you're already playing the dealer not the other players a couple of them don't know diddly about this game when you're ready to sit down you'll probably know more about blackjack than they do but if they bug you remember our favorite too up up and away okay decision time you like the table if it's okay by you it's okay by me all right now let's talk about picking a seat I got mine the dealer deals clockwise now the first player to the dealer's left gets the first car now we call that player the first baseman now if you hear anybody talking about the first baseman he's the one they mean the player on the dealer's right is the last one to get a card they call in the third baseman some men feel right okay where shall you sit hey this is a big decision if you sit in the first baseman seat you'll be the first one to make a bet everybody will be waiting on you now that may be alright for veteran players like myself but you don't need that kind of pressure if you sit in the third basement seat you'd be the last player to take a card before the dealer you might pull a face card that would have put the dealer over 21 you know I hate when that happens you know what the other players are thinking huh if that dum-dum I didn't think of that face god the dealer would have gone bust well maybe that's not so but that's more pressure and you don't need it on the other hand the third baseman seat would give us the best picture of what's already been played now if you look at it that way the third baseman seat is a good spot to be in so here's my idea you don't take the third baseman seat too much pressure you take the closest seat that's open next to it this way you won't be under the gun with the data but you'll still be in a seat that will give you a good view of what's been played ok now that we have a seat let's get us some tips we'll start with $100 remember I showed you the betting square before when you're buying in put the money down outside the square not in the square that would look like you're trying to bet cash and you don't use cash in casino blackjack the dealer will count your money she'll check the amount with you and then announce it to either the pit-boss what the man change 100 the chips are different colors for different denominations the actual colors will vary from casino to casino now here the $5 chips are red the $25 chips agree and the hundred-dollar chips the high-society chips they're black so if you got a $100 bill and you want $25 worth of chips you'd have to take $100 in chips do you put $75 of them in your pocket to cash in with a casino cashier later on now she's giving you two green chips and ten red chips total $100 you could trust the dealer to give you the correct number of chips but just still count them okay anyone can make a mistake then she places the money of the drop box remember when we're done we won't cash in our chips here at the table the dealer can only change color that means she'll take our chips and give us bigger denominations so they'll be easier to carry all we have to do is say change color please well that's the kind of problem we definitely want to have now before we play I want to go over the value of the cards with you in a deck of cards there are 16 cards that count as 10 that's the Kings the Queen's jacks and the tens and there are 32 cards that count as their face value in other words the deuces or the twos countess to the threes counters 3 etc etc etc and there are four cards that count either 1 or 11 those are the aces each ace can count one point or 11 points now each player gets two cards face up now some casinos you might get them face down the dealer gets one card down and a second card up in some casinos especially in England the dealer will only get one card face up and not get the second card until all the hands are played either way face up or face down one card or two card all the players are trying to beat the dealer without going bust going over 21 we can stay dig no more cards anytime we want now here's how we let the dealer know if we want another card or want to stay when our two cards are face up and we want a card we scratched the surface like this if we don't want a card we shake our hand from side to side arm down kind of a one-handed baseball umpire calling safe we're not two cards are face down we scrape them like this if we want another card if we don't we slide our cards underneath the chips we're betting remember the dealer must draw on everything up to and including 16 that's House Rules and she's got no choice and we can figure that in our strategy as we play now pretty soon you're gonna hear me talk about soft hands and hard hands so let me tell you what they mean a hard hand is any combination of cards that can make you go over 21 if you take another card like 12 or 13 or 14 or more a soft hand is one with an ace that can't bust by taking another card like an ace for a six or even an ace eight now if you've got that let's look at a couple of hands so we can get the hang of it before you start to play for real let's see the dealer's up card shows six we have a 10 and a 4 14 are hard and now we don't know what the dealer's down card is but we have to give her credit for the highest probable and that would mean either a 10 or one of the three face cards Jack queen or king that together with the six would give her 16 now house will say she has to pull on 16 or under and there's no way we'd take another card the chances for the dealer going bust are far greater than the chances for her to improve our hand to 17 or better stay baby stay by this time the dealer has a king we have cards that add up to 12 do we stay no way we have to give the deal of credit for 10 in the hole odds are in her favor to have at least 17 house will say she can draw over 16 she'll stay and beat out 12 so we pull we hit we take another card the dealer shows of 5 we've got 13 again we have to figure her for a 10 of the whole the house will say that she must pull on 15 do we pull no way we stay let the deal take the chance of going bust now let's take a look at what we just learned here's the first of Telly's rules of play always assume that deal has the highest possible card in the hole when the dealer shows the 7 hit if you have 12 or under when the dealer shows 2 3 4 5 or 6 stay if you have 13 14 15 or 16 when the dealer shows an 8 9 or 10 hit on 14 or under so let's practice a little more the dealer shows 8 we have a 6 and an ace a soft hand and it can cope bust if we take another card we could have 17 11 for the ACE plus 6 but if we assume the dealer has a 10 and all she'd have 18 so we take a card we can't go bust and we might pull an ace deuce 3 4 and have a good shot at beating her so you hear baby okay we have an 8 and an ace the deal answer 7 we stay we have to give her credit for 10 value in the hole that adds up to 17 we have 19 counting the ACE as 11 can the dealer pull another card if she does have 17 no way Jose she's got a stick of 17 that's a house rule now Telly's rule number three with a soft hand when the dealer has a 7 or less you hit on everything up to ace 6 with an a7 stay unless dealer shows a 9 or 10 stay on soft 19 or 20 no matter what the dealer shows now let's cover splits that's when your first two cards are the same a pair you can place the bed equals the original bet on each card and played two independent hands you can win them both you can win one and lose the other or you can lose them both let's take a closer look at some splits and now I'll show you how to play them Telly's way ah this is interesting a pair of kings and the dealer shoves r7 when we split these no way never why risk losing both when we have almost a certain winner now we have a pair of nines and the diva shows a four do we split absolutely now you're a pair of fives and the dealer has a 10 we split no matter what the dealer shows we never split fives ah a dream and do we split the Aces you bet you now let's take a look at Telly's rule for splitting pairs first Inayat parade always every time whenever you can rain or shine no matter what the dealer shows split aces and eights aces because they give you two great-aunts if you catch and eights because together they're a lousy hand never split face cards fives or fours now when the dealer shows a four five or six split all other pairs when the dealer shows a 7 or better do not split any pair except of course aces and eights in this casino you can spread any pair but some casinos limit splitting so you should check the house rules before starting to play and as long you're asking questions check the rules on reefs plating pairs if it makes sense to split a pair of eights then if you get another 8 on top of the original 8 you want to split that too now say a dealer shows the four as her up card and you've got a pair of eights you split you get a 10 on the first date okay that's 18 a good and so you stay on your other 8 you get another 8 is it a good idea to split that pair of eights it was the first time and it is now so put down another chip equal to your original bet and split now Telly's rule number 6 if the original splint was a good play the Reece Plitt is still a good play you know there's one pair that most casinos won't let you reach split and that's aces but I asked anyway you never can tell now let's take a look at doubling down this sound works after our first two cards we can double our bet and get one more card and only one card not a bad deal when you think you got the dealer beat the dealer shows us seven we've got 11 the odds are in our favor so double down baby double down we're bucking tougher cards here the dealer shows a 10 we assume she's got a 10 in the hole if you play it my way don't double down now some players think they should double down whenever they're showing a higher cause than the dealer's up cards that's a good way to lose your shirt in this case cool it and just play your cards straight when you got a soft end you play the double down a little differently here's one you never double down on with a soft 19 or 20 you don't double down it doesn't matter what the dealer's it's open and shut you're soft 19 or 20 are almost impossible to improve you stand now here's the soft and you always double down on it's double trouble for the house because the odds are in your favor all the way even with one less point in your hand a soft 16 and dealer shows us 6 you still double down here's our soft 17 again but with a different dealer card a 10 the deal looks too strong so we don't double down but we do take a card now let's take a look at my rules for doubling down always double down when you have eleven except when the deal shows an ace or ten always double down when you have a ten except when dealer shows a 10 or an ace always double down when you have a nine except when dealer shows seven or higher doubling down on soft hands you know when you have an ace it's just a little different ready for my rules already here we go never double down are soft 19 or 20 they're almost certain winners always double down on any soft hand when the dealer shows a four five or six now don't double down when you have a soft hand of sixteen or less and dealer shows a two or three doubling down is a good idea as long as you follow the rules I've given you some casinos well they put restrictions on which card can double down with so you check their regulations before you play now here's an interesting line for you right on the table the insurance line when the dealer gets an ace as an up card she'll ask if anyone wants insurance and now she's isn't moonlighting a little life insurance on the side she's giving the players at the table a chance to insure their bets the play is CN aces the dealer's up card for all they know she's got a face card or a ten and a whole in other words an unbeatable hand so they insure against the dealer having a blackjack by betting up to at one half their original bet now the insurance bets pay off at twice their value for example if the dealer has a blackjack the player loses his original bet but he wins twice his insurance bet so it's a push for watch he comes out even insurance is always a bad bad bad I take it only when I've got a blackjack myself why because I don't like to push on a blackjack hand I like a win so you listen to me and only take insurance when you have blackjack now we come to the most important part of the blackjack game as far as I'm concerned how to bet and manage your money hey you can't forget the rules for splitting or doubling down once in a while but if you remember the principles of sound money management you've got a great shot at coming out ahead now what are those principles listen up baby you listen up be disciplined set winning and losing limits before you start playing when you hit them if you're smart you retire for the evening take a walk make the limit 40 times the table minimum in this game with a $5 minimum our losing limit would be $200 never never reach in your pocket for more money than you're losing limit when you hit it say bye-bye and walk off into the sunset bet the tables minimum when you're losing it but when you're winning lay it in bed Evie and always with the houses money not your own you play with the houses money that's the key if you don't play with the houses money you won't win it's as simple as that now but both ears to work because I want to listen very carefully this is my secret to get a shot at playing with the houses money here's how your bet bet the minimum if you win let it ride your original bet and what you've just won if you win again take out the original bet and let the rest right you're now playing with the houses money if you win take out all the chips and start again with a minimum bet that's the story and that's all she wrote always ride a winning streak all the way to beat the house you need streaks of at least three consecutive wins so call for them if your win three in a row and then lose three straight with minimum bets you'll come out way in if you get high you can increase your minimum bet but never never make up for losses bet with your head not with your emotions and never let your chips right as the third win okay you know how to manage your money now you like the stakes and the dealer and you know how to play properly at least as good as the others at the table the next step is to actually play blackjack we'll start with the minimum bet a $5 chip we put it into the betting square in front of us now notice the dealer shuffles in this casino we play with six decks but it could go as high as eight you know that's a lot of shuffling and a lot of cards the fewer the decks the better the chances are to remember what has been played anything over three decks come on forget it now one of the players cuts the cards the dealer inserts the plastic marker to indicate when the decks need to be reshuffle now the cards go into the shoe okay here they come the first baseman gets a nine face-up the next player adduced the player after her and ace now we get an eight after us a nine of four and the third baseman pulls a five the dealer gets a down card okay here we go for the second card the first baseman gets a jack 19 the next player gets a three lohan the third player pulls a king blackjack notice that she doesn't grab her cause she doesn't touch them she doesn't say a word she doesn't have to the dealer just knots in this game you don't touch the cards by not touching them you eliminate any possibility of damaging or marking them and you don't have to talk you communicate with the dealer by using their hand signals you already know now we get a three that makes 11 a great hand the next player gets an 8 then at 10 and the third baseman gets a 7 now the dealer gets our second card face-up a six not a great card for the house but it couldn't be better for the player okay you can bet the blackjack won't take another car and now she collects one and a half times what you bet the girl with the blackjack that's the payoff for getting blackjack okay now we're going to play out the hands the first baseman signals alt that means that he doesn't want another card he's going to stay with 19 the dealer moves on to the next player player 2 gets a 6 that gives her 11 she's signaling for another card a jack that makes 21 you can't do much better than that now it's our turn we sure gonna double down if we could pull a face card to give us 21 and that would be unbeatable we put another $5 chips that matches our original bet on the table that's all we don't have to say anything the dealer sees it she knows we're doubling down she gives us one card face up no matter what we pull we know we can't go over 21 hey seven well not bad especially what the dealer's showing your sinks gives us 18 now the fifth player he's signaling palms down oh he doesn't want any more he's gonna stay with the 17 and you know something he's smart anything over a four word bust him right he's better off to write it out against the dealer if she has less than 17 the house rules will make her draw and she might go over 21 at 16 azar she'll bust I can't believe our next players asking for a card if she played tellings way she'd stay no way would she pull a bad move a 10 and she busts now the third baseman a queen that's bad news ba-ba-baby he busted and the dealer she turns over oh god a jack she's got 16 take a card an ace that's 17 and she must stay now the payoff the first player has 19 a winner the second player another winner the third player had the blackjack and has paid it's our turn we've got 18 the dealers got 17 we win and because we double down we win twice as much the fifth player has 17 so does the dealer it's a Porsche standoff she leaves his money where it is now this is not a bad time to talk about tipping okay if you had a good night and consistently beat the dealer it certainly is good form to say thank you okay with this you can give her chips the number and color would depend upon your winnings I'll bet those chips for her on the next hand how's that now we're going to take Telus advice on money management winning him the double down was almost the equivalent of winning two hands we're going to take our original $10 out and bet the rest on the next hand from here on out we're playing with the houses money okay the deal is set to go again this lady likes to keep it moving she's a good dealer the first baseman gets the first card it's an 8 the second player gets another 8 the third player the lady with a blackjack last time a 9 we get an ace green card on next card could give us a blackjack the fifth player a 3 next a jack the third baseman gets a 5 the dealer gets a down card okay here comes the next card to the first baseman it's an 8 to go with his first date let's see what's going down with the second player she has an 8 this time she gets a 5 that is up to 13 not a great hand the hands the gal who got the blackjack of the first hand she had a 9 on her first card and she's getting a deuce now the player can't go bust because she has 11 a terrific and ok here we are we got an ace on our first card and now we've got another ace baby we're living life that's the kind of hand you dream about let's see what's shaking with a 5th player he gets a deuce on top of a 3 next player another Jack terrific but here we are at the third baseman the last player before the dealer he gets a six he's got 11 total he could double down now here's the biggie the dealer let's see what she does for herself she gets an ace a big card pay attention to this this is interesting insurance anyone want insurance nobody's taking her up on it they know it's a sucker play the players at this table aren't so dumb okay now we'll see how the cards go as I told you before you always split aces and eights this guy knows the rule he's putting another bet on the table he doesn't even touch his cards the dealer knows that he wants to split his pair of eights the dealer gives him a card on his first day it's a 10 18 he came out way ahead on that one she's giving him a card on his second date not so good this time it's only a seven he's got 15 will he stay with it would you stay with a 15 in this hand if he played the wait le play he'd take another card Hey I think he read my mind he's gonna hit a three all right the player is 18 now he stays and takes his chances against whatever card the dealer has a null we can see that our second player as a hard hand an eight and a five she could go bust if she pulls a face card a ten or nine but looking at the dealer's ace she's got no choice she got it she gets a three she's got 16 now but she still has no choice go for it baby another three she's got 19 gotta stay with that now let's just ask ourselves a question we know what this player did with the dealer holding an ace but what if the dealer had of four five or six that would change everything when the dealer shows a stiff card three through six and you've got a hard hand you should stand on everything never hit a stiff against the stiff here's our third player it's taught she doubles down on her nine and two four eleven not a great move with the dealer's showing an ace she gets one card and it's a seven the total is eighteen okay we're next let us split these aces you always split pair aces because chances are they'll turn out to be winners now there's one thing that's different when you're splitting you only get one card on each split hand one card for each ace and that's it we can't get any more cards and you can't we split aces here they come a queen blackjack Oh next cards are three for a total of fourteen not so great when the dealer has an ace but catch this even if we were the last player in the game and she knew we had 14 and she had sixteen in other words she knew she had us beat the house rules would make her take another card that's right she draws she'd have to so maybe we'll win the round 14 we'll just sit tight and see what happens the fifth player has a three in a - he doesn't have a hard hand he can't go bust no matter what card he draws let's see he pulls a five he's got a total of 10 if he had this in two cars he might want to double down over the dealer showing an ace it wouldn't be a great play but he's got it in three cards so doubling down is a no-no even if he wanted to he's scraping his fingers toward himself he wants to get hit again why not he can't go bust the dealer will keep giving him cause until he signals or or until he's busted his next card is a nine good he stands on 19 the next play is gonna stay no way will she take a card or split the jacks the third baseman's got an 11 he's putting a chip on the table besides his cards that means he's doubling down he's doubling right into the teeth of the dealers ace I disagree I think he's pressing his luck you always have to figure the dealer for a whole card that gives her the highest possible hand it's just common sense to figure the other guy's strong as possibilities when you increase your bed with an ace showing the dealer's strongest hand will be a 10 value card on the whole you know she doesn't have that because if she did she would have turned up her blackjack the moment she got it but if she doesn't have a 10 or a face card at all you have to figure for a 9 that would mean that the 3rd baseman is doubling into a 29 plus 11 for the ACE that's a dumb move his odds are pretty bad well here comes the card the six not so great against the dealer's ace okay it's the dealer's play she turns her whole caught up it's a four all right a great card for us a terrible card for the house the house will say she's got to draw on anything that's 16 or below no matter how she counts a race she's under 16 so she has to draw she pulls an 8 now she has to count her race has 1 point for a total of 13 she's got to draw again here it comes a queen a lady for the lady and it buster look at some of these people you'd think they've won the lottery that happens to some players when the dealer goes bust but we have to keep cool we have to keep our emotions under control that way we can play with discipline discipline and a couple of other do's and dont's tend to be exact can give you a better shot at going home a winner I call them my Ten Commandments listen up and hear this keep your emotions under control getting emotional leads to bad bets and taking a card when you shouldn't the best way to get on a winning streak stay cool don't increase the size of your bets to make up for losses and don't ever think if you lose 4 hands you do the win on the fifth the odds remain the same for each bet in your losing streak okay remember that you listen to telly and stay cool if ok expect to win this one is simple and it's my philosophy for life as well don't just sit down at a blackjack table expecting to lose or you will if you're in a losing mood get thee to a bingo parlor better still take a visit of Boulder Dam or take a stroll on the boardwalk expect to win period don't even think blackjack if you're under the weather this is your money you got to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to hold on to it even a headache an urgent judgement take your two aspirins and come back tomorrow focus on the dealer remember you're only playing the dealer casino noise the other players forget him problems with your job with your wife with the IRS leave all that the parking lot its excess baggage here cometh to the table with a nice clear drink at the bar not at the table like oil and water the hard stuff and blackjack just don't make it booze will make you sleepy less alert and affect your gambling decisions and assign calories too so stick with the diet stuff be comfortable you don't need as factions shoes jackets shirts and ties should all fit nothing too tight know how much to lose and how much to win it's discipline discipline discipline I can't say it enough set a losing limit and if you hit it walk away don't give yourself special credit just for tonight take a dip in the ocean I'll go see other show and set a winning limit too but never never walk away from a winning streak now when you reach your winning limit and your luck starts to go south walk away a winner use rent money to pay the rent money for food for clothes for babies new pair of shoes money you can't afford to lose it's no fun playing with that kind of money you'll be uptight tense a nervous wreck don't do it just say no no had a bet it's called money management money management makes the most of every bit of luck yeah if you don't know when to up your bets or when to cut back on them it's unlikely you'll leave the table of winner playing with the houses money is essential and knowing what and when the bed is what winning blackjack is all about and the last commandment remember the other night speaking of money management let's practice a little of our own we played with the houses money this last and right was a split and we won both so it was like winning a third and fourth hands in a row now after two great hands like that I wouldn't press our luck I would take out all our winnings and bet just one chip on the next hand okay here we go the first baseman gets a six tough card the second player gets an eighth the third player gets an ace week and a nine nice I god I'll take it any day a four to the fifth player next player a seven and the third baseman gets a deuce the dealer gets her down card a lot of people here are wishing they had x-ray vision here we go again the first baseman gets an ace big card changes his possibilities the second player it's another ace an ace on an 8 ended up it's a strong and player three gets a 10 blackjack you could feel the coming this lady's riding his streak the other players just hoping some bit rub off on them we get a 9 on top of our 9 what do you think we should do not a thing until we see the dealer's up card a six six and four makes 10 he might double down next player gets a 10 the third baseman gets a card a 5 that's 7 total the dealer gets a 7 if you're
