welcome to the players Network school of gaming I'm Cheryl Maxfield very shortly you'll be able to walk up to a blackjack table and place a bet with confidence you'll be armed with the knowledge of how to get the greatest odds when playing blackjack today we have the foremost authority on gaming instruction he has over thirty years of experience in the gaming industry and he's the author of such books as Las Vegas behind the tables shipwrecked in Las Vegas and casino secrets the Heath the players network resident gaming instructor and I'd like to welcome the man with all the casino secrets mr. Barney Benson welcome Barney thanks Cheryl great to be here again now Barney you've done just about everything a person can do a tour around the tables and today you're going to teach us how to play blackjack now that happens to be my favorite game if it's the most popular game in the casino it is it is the most popular game in the casino and not only that it's the most profitable if you play it right well how did blackjack get started well surprisingly enough I don't have all the answers but here's my old gumshoe buddy Jack Black hey I I was working my last hand of blackjack I put down a substantial net over by the lady that makes you a turkey Brazil probable eyes my hand was a stiff 16 and my power the card from sporting the seven all he wanted to know was one thing stand on it I have the flu I thought what would the pioneers of this game with gun images flashed through my mind like an old movie how blackjack also called 21 developed 19th century america but its origins of the french came back al the Italian gave baccarat and the Spanish came 30 and won no help there then I remembered how the earliest record of the current game were from the backroom casinos in Indiana racetracks are we the century I was in the good old days when dealers paid a fine buck bonus for a to con 21 is it the jack of spades or clubs giving the game it's named still didn't help me with my problem then it hit me like the fists of a showgirls boyfriend I remembered how the 1956 of Maryland for engineers analyze tens of thousands of blackjack hands on primitive calculators and they came up with a chart and the best strategies I was elated I can picture the scene as clear as day a chart however remained a fuzzy blur I would have killed get my hands on one of those cause of the chart on it but unfortunately the gift shop was closed so I was on my own I knew I should have watched players Network all right bud I made my decision this is horribly sounds like Jack Black is about to get select but he did bring up one good point and that is these basic strategy cards now this card which is available in all casino gift shops tells you how to play each and every hand of blackjack when to stand when to hit when to double down when to split the best of all most casinos will allow you to keep this card in front of you while you play and refer to it during the game now what's the first thing I do when I walk up to a blackjack table the very first thing you should do Cheryl is check out the table and the first thing would be to see what the minimum bet at the table is there's usually a little sign on each table which will tell you what the minimum wager is what you're looking for is a five-dollar table until you really get that the hang of the game now secondly read on the blackjack table the rules for the dealer for example here look at this Peter must draw 216 and stand on all seven teams that's important from your standpoint because if some casinos a dealer will hit a soft 17 which is an ace and a six this is the best option for you where the dealer stands on all seven teams now about buying change at the table you have to play with chips at the table so what you're going to do is place your money on the table don't put it in one of the betting circles that's where your vet goes maybe you place your money in that vending circle the dealer might think you're making a bet so always set your money off to the side and it doesn't hurt to say change please the dealer will place your chips right in front of you like so and now you're ready to play first thing to do now before you play is learn hand signals you gotta use hand signals when you play blackjack in a casino so let's say the cards are dealt face down in that case what you're going to do aren't you got your bed in the circle now if the cards are dealt face down what you're going to do is if you don't want another card you're going to simply tuck your cards under your bet like that that's letting the dealer know your pad now if you do want another card you will take your cards behind your bet and gently scratch them on the table that's letting the dealer you want another card most casinos however deal the cards face up like this except for the dealer now he's going to get one down and one up both of your cards own or face up when your cars are don't face up you have to use hand signals you don't touch the cards what you're going to do is if you want another card gently stretch behind your bet like that that's letting that they don't know you want another card or if you really want to be sophisticated you can do it like this that's telling the dealer hey I've been around I played this before and if you don't want another card what you do is simply go like that those are the hand rules you're ready to play now the rules of blackjack are very simple and that's one reason this game is so exciting first of all remember that a blackjack is an ace and a 10 or an ace and a face card on your first two cards and it pays you one and a half times your bet so if you're betting $10 and you get a black bag get that $15 otherwise an ace is 1 or 11 so if you have an ace and a 10 well we've got a blackjack if you have an ace and a six then you've got 7 or you've got 17 and the object of blackjack in one sentence is to get closer to 21 then the dealer does without going over 21 now I hear that most people don't play blackjack properly is there a right way to play yes there is a right way to play by Jay I would say 80% of the people who play blackjack don't play it properly you want to play blackjack right and get the house edge down under 1% you should practice what is called basic strategy basic strategy is really really simple what you're doing when you play basic strategy is you're always assuming that the dealer's bottom card is a 10 the reason for that is because there are more tens in the deck than anything else think about you have tens Jack's Queens Kings they're all worth 10 so since there are so many tens in the deck just assume the dealer's bottom card is it then because it probably will be and that means the next card coming out of the shoe it's probably going to be another 10 so you've got a 16 and the dealer is showing a 6 it's just human nature to want to hit that 16 and make it better but using basic strategy assuming my bottom cards of 10 the next card is going to be another 10 would you really want another card or would you want to make the dealer take it in this case assuming deuter's got 16 he's got to hit it the next card is going to make him break then make the dealer take the big card it's coming what you got to remember it's a hard habit to break when you play blackjack the cards that you get aren't important they don't mean what matters is what the dealer has and the big misconception about blackjack is that you're trying to make a good hand no just trying to beat the dealer so the question remains when to stand and when to hit and here's the formula in a nutshell if the dealer is showing a bad card a 2 3 4 5 or 6 and you've got 12 or more in your hand if you risk breaking by taking another card then don't take 1 make the dealer take it on the other hand if the dealer's showing a good card 7 8 9 10 or ace and you've got 16 or less in that case you should take another card because you're assuming you've already lost anyway one exception a basic strategy is if you have a 12 and the dealer is showing a 2 a 2 up to the dealer can be a dangerous card because the dealer has a 50% chance of making a good hand out of a 12 so that's the one exception if the dealer is showing a 2 and you have 12 in that case if you want to hit it go ahead because you've got a 50% chance just like the dealer does one thing to remember though is if you're going to hit a 12 against a 12 do it every time if you're not going to hit a 12 X 12 don't ever do it but play the same way consistently now we know the dealer's bottom card is not always going to be a temp we know that but the reason why basic strategy works is because you're playing the same way consistently which is exactly what the data is doing and using basic strategy in the long run will lower the house edge at my jacket to under 1% that's great to split or not to split what's the rule on splitting pairs well splitting is a very important option of blackjack you're getting a chance to get more money in the game when you have a pair for example let's say you're betting $10 and the dealer deals you two eights now you've got a chance to split those by matching your bet in the circle now don't place the extra bet on top of your original bet always to the side like that the dealer knows what you're doing he'll separate these eights for you and now what you're doing is you're making two hands out of one hand we'll play this hand to completion then we go to the next hand and if the dealer deals you another 8 after you've split eights well guess what you can split them again up to 4 times in most casinos now the idea behind splitting eights is the fact that if you hit a 16 what's probably going to happen to you you're probably going to go over 21 but by splitting these you've got a chance of making two good hands out of one bad one we're hoping the next two cards are going to be tens there you go to eight teams betting twice as much money in the long run and just memorizes always split eights regardless of what the dealer's top card is and another pair you always split aces if the dealer deals you two aces split them every single time always split aces now one thing you must remember when you split aces you don't get as many cards as you want you're only going to get one card on each ace the dealer's going to put it sideways like that meaning that's all the cards you're going to get well look at it you got 21 here and well not so good they're 17 but still a good idea always split aces and eights memorising aces and eights pairs that you wouldn't split while I wouldn't split hands you've already got 20 hello we see people do it all the time but it is not a good idea to split teams why risk winding up with two bad hands when you've got a good hand to start with other pairs that I would never split fours or fives what are you going to give these flip for is what to 14s no don't split floors don't split vibes but if you want to play blackjack properly be on the lookout with a dealer turning over up for five or six those are the worst cards for the dealer to have and if the dealer is showing a four five or six I would split twos threes sixes sevens even nice but always split aces and eights what about the option of doubling down well doubling down is another option that's available at blackjack and that is an important option just like splitting pairs is let's say the dealer deals you an 8 and a three how much does that add up to another 11 and what is the next card probably going to be a 10 so here's a chance to double down what that means is you double your original bet or anything up to your original bet you can double for less in most casinos anything up to your original bet but by doubling down again you're going to get one more card now what is that next card going to be ten which is going to give you 21 here we go well dip it in the long run though always double down with 11 because of the fact there are so many tens in there memorize it always double down with 11 how about doubling down with 10 good idea good idea if the dealer's top card is not a 10 or an ace and with nine yes you could double down with a knife if the dealer's showing that bad card again what would those bad cards four or five or six if the dealer's showing up for five or six you should double down with nine or an ace and any small card an ace deuce an ace three nice for an ace five and a six even an ace seven if the dealer is showing a four five or a six very important here's the is a rule on that if you've got the odds in your favor you want to get as much money in the game as you can if you don't have the odds in your favor then you want to get out of the game as cheaply as you can that's the idea behind splitting and doubling down getting a chance to get more money in the game when you've got the odds in your favor now there are pros and cons to taking insurance when the dealer has an ace up now what is insurance and what do the experts say about taking it whenever the dealer's top card is an ace he's going to offer every player at the table a chance to insure their bet you're not insuring your cards you're insuring your bet against the dealer having a blackjack let's say you're betting $20 I turn over an ace I'm going to say insurance and that means if you want to share that bet you've got to put anything up to half your original bet on the insurance line here's the insurance line now here's what's going to happen if the dealer has a blackjack and you don't you lose your original pet but you get paid two-to-one for your insurance so you didn't lose anything sounds pretty good doesn't it well there is a slight problem and that is if the dealer doesn't have a blackjack you lose your insurance vet and later on you might lose your other vet too in the long run is it a good idea to take insurance at the blackjack table not really the odds are only one in three that the dealer even has a blackjack and you're playing percentage of a one exception to that would be if you have a blackjack and the dealer is showing an ace in that case I would take insurance because you're going to get paid whether the dealer has a blackjack or not all you're really going to get back is even money because you had to put up half your original bet to protect the other one but still getting paid even money is better than not getting anything because sometimes the dealer will have a blackjack and if I have a blackjack and the player has a blackjack nobody wants anything it's a push so take even money if you've got a blackjack and the dealer is showing the nice that way you're going to get paid regardless but otherwise insurance is not recommended Barney what is this option called surrender surrender is an option that's not available in all casinos so check before you play here's how surrender works though let's say you're betting $20 and the dealer deals you one of the worst and you've ever had in your life if you're not happy with your first two cards and if the dealer does not have a blackjack you're allowed to surrender by giving up half your original bet and your honor the rest of the game or the rest of the hand anyway is it a good idea to surrender most experts say that if your first two cards add up to fifteen or sixteen and the dealer is showing a 10 or an ace then you could surrender personally I don't like the idea I mean ask yourself this how much you you gonna win if you give up half your money and drop out of the game okay I understand the game and the strategy but in order to make any money I've got to manage my money what's the key to money management money management is betting more money when you win and less money when you lose everyone's got their own system of money management have you ever heard of the system called double up and catch up you lose you double your bet you keep doing that let me tell you what I saw recently I saw a man in a casino bet five dollars lost then he bet 10 20 40 80 160 320 when he got to $640 II won but what did he win five dollars betting all that much money to win five dollars my favorite form of money management is starting and it's the easiest one to remember start with the minimum bet on the table for example let's say you're at a five dollar table so you start with a five dollar bet now if you win take back your original investment you're still betting five dollars now from this point on every time you win we're going to go up one chip so we win now we're at ten dollars one again up one chip take the rest back no work fifteen win again up one chip pull the rest back win again up one chip pull the rest back now that way if you get a nice run of cards you're going to take advantage of it soon as you lose and you will okay then back to your original minimum bet again you'll be surprised how it works and that's the most popular form of money management okay Barney now that we've learned the basics let's have our voluntary players rich and GG test out what we've all just learned guys ready to play a few hands yeah take it away Barney all right first thing we're going to do is start you out with some money we're going to start you each out with four chips let's pretend we're starting with $20 apiece and just so there's no hanky-panky going on have you cut the cards anywhere just got them anywhere anywhere and we're going to put them right in the front of the shoe now remember again the first thing that you got to keep in mind your cards don't matter what matters is what the dealer has because that's a hand you're playing against so first of all everyone make a bet in the circle put one in the circle there one chip I here come your cards face up like that mine's gonna be down and now we're going to turn it over like this and we're assuming the dealer has what 2023 720 my bottom card is a 10 so you've got 4 Ridge so what would you like to do yes hang your card right yeah so give me that hand signal scratch behind your bet yeah there you go all right now you got 11 you want another one play let's again make big lies okay 13 I still got 20 I guess I'm a little too much yeah rich you lost that one but if it makes you feel any better you lost intelligently oh now this hand in a 7 against a 10 technically yes another card think of the cards that will help you you could get an ace a deuce or a 3 and a 10 won't hurt you you'll still have 18 so technically I would hit that just back there this scratch now look 19 so now we stop stop the like that Oh blackjack all right well let's play another one here yet all right dealer has a bad card now look at this card I have 14 that's what we're assuming that's hard to probably make me break this would be a great chance for you rich to Double Down got a nation of three think of how many cards will give you a good hand here you can get a seven a six a five before a three of ten won't hurt you so put one shop alongside there and I want to give you one pound like that now look at that 18 and you're betting twice pretty much okay seven I wouldn't double down here because even a 17 isn't that good of an just hope for a nice big cart okay now you've got well maybe not though even though you only have 12 remember I have 14 and I'm probably going to break when I hit this I wouldn't I mean if you analyze it mathematically you do have a 50% chance of making a good hand out of 1/12 but the dealer doesn't have a 50% chance of making a good hand out of a 14 so I will stop 8 well this time 18 it didn't work that time and you get a push because we tied you don't win or live so drag one ship back we'll start at 1 again an object of the game that work all right so you have a blackjack that's going to pay you three to two so for five dollars in the real game you will get back seven dollars and fifty cents now you get yours soon as you get paid you get great money up hey eighteen pretty good pretty good fourteen I have to hit it hey you guys good then you have another winner here another one all right now let's get a bet down there remember money management you might want to just try going up a chip now we're starting to you want to wait or go up there we go oh let's play a good three to two all right you've got eighteen so you're going to start five fifteen huh thank you guys so much now look what you won you won two chips now using money management I would suggest going up one chip hole the rest back Oh does anybody want insurance that's right the insurance remember Peter turns over nice you'll offer your insurance technically the odds are only one in three that I have once I wouldn't really recommend it but let's just say I'm going to share it all right unless you have a blackjack and then you'd get paid regardless of you only you would get even money thank know what I'm going to do is check to see they have a scanner on the table that lets me see whether I have a blackjack or not in this case I don't have it so what are we going to think of the aces being think of it as being like a ten because there are so many cars that will combine with an ace to give me a good hand so just think of the dealer as having 20 now in this case you've got 17 and that's a good stopping point I would always stop at 17 you only have what though fifty technically should take another part well a little too much but I always say if you're gonna go if you're gonna go down go down in flames Janet shaking out a surrender of it well look at that push we tied so you get a play so you could stay at that vent and you would start over back to one there we go Oh nigger has what 20 gotta stop though stop stop well I have 18 so you're a winner and you and I get a push again but again the reason why basic strategy works is because you're playing the same way consist of my think let's try another one I'm gonna stick that's right there we go all right there you go all right pretty good nodding - hey it was like he sees me Oh yeah there that's better I know you want a card but do you really want one what do I have I should just use your size make the dealer break which we'll do right now there you go yes here we are what what uh my name is Ron oh I see a double down situation right yeah 11 so this would be a time to double down to get one card like yeah about time there's a mouse hands and you both won you started out with a $2 bet and look wait wait wait wait wait wait what makes a good part of a game there you go my touch it so in case you think you do a good yes but look at my card it's a hard habit to break this is a hand you're playing against now you're assuming I've got 15 the next card is gonna be a chance you don't want it make me take it 11 only this time 17 here's a winner here though that's right don't you play it you played it right I played it right okay well you're gonna bet 15 dollars okay let's see what happens this time oh all right I knew this would be a good time to do a split split the eights remember we always split eights how much money you got left well put it out there I'm gonna loan you one boy I put it alongside like that from us can't split flesh double you can double for less but when you split you have to match all right now we're gonna make two hands out of one and we're hoping for to Tim yeah there's one bust well well it worked just like about the postal and look at this and that's how easy it is to play blind check it's not simple Wow great information Barney now do you think our players are ready the five the dealer is showing a six do you a and B hit C double down or D split I remember that one if you said C double down you're right you've got the odds in your favor so get as much money in the game as you can and remember you can only split pairs the dealer is showing a ten and you've got a total of sixteen do you a fan B hit fee double down not sure on this one if you said be hit then your run again assuming the dealer's bottom card will always be a 10 you have to ask yourself with a 16 beat of 20 and remember you should never double down when your cards total 12 or more you're dealt to ace and the dealer is showing a 10 assuming the dealer has 20 should you a split the eights anyway be hit be thinned or D surrender I know this one if you said a split the eights anyway you're absolutely right the dealer's bottom card won't always be a 10 and in the long run you'll be money ahead to always split eights okay last question your Delta 12 the dealer is showing it to do you a hit B stand or C surrender I know what I would do if your answer is a or B you're right a 12 for the dealer can be a dangerous hand he has a 50% chance of making a better hand out of a 12 and so do you but if you do hit a 12 against the dealer's 12 do it every time if you're not going to hit a 12 against the dealer's 12 don't ever do it play the same way consistently and consistency is what winning a blackjack is all about well that's the game of blackjack but before we go Barney could you recap the main points of blackjack well certainly a always split aces & eights B always double down with 11 C always assume the dealer's bottom card is a 10 because there are more kids in the deck than anything else then play your cards accordingly and D insurance is not recommended that's basic strategy blackjack now one thing I do want to emphasize is that even if you play the game properly the casino is still going to have the advantage all you can do is get the house as down as low as you can by playing the game right and you follow basic strategy of blackjack you the house edge 2 under 1% so get out there have some fun and good luck Thank You Barney I can't wait to try out these tips
