you're watching throttle house i'm thomas and i'm james and this is a drag race [Music] [Music] a race between a modified champion of yesteryear a champion of this year and the new guy which we have okay the model s plaid silent but deadly just like a fart so i've been told this car is shocking in a straight line and i'm excited to experience that i have a drag strip mode in sport steering mode and everything missing a bit of a steering wheel that's a bit perplexing but there's a reason there's no gtr here and that's because we're doing this in heats because the gt-r as it turns out when you when you put a lot of horsepower into one it gets pretty squirrely and the driver of the gtr was like i'd like more space and i can't blame him but uh yeah um we'll do that one after whoever wins this will take on the gtr and uh it's gonna be me okay turbo s all right now this is kind of the baseline for internal combustion cars in a quarter mile just off the shelf front porsche it's nuts what this can do it takes a lot to bully it a model s might just be enough although this is ready to go i've got speed response i've got launch control i haven't got to do anything he's got to do this fancy pants drag thing that takes eight ten minutes to warm up you know what that's not fair is it what's up i've made a decision i have you now you aren't allowed to do the drag most mode thing yet what do you mean i want to see what happens if we pull up at a traffic light rather than me having a copy uh seven minutes to exactly warm my batteries you want me to just go exactly so all you get is plaid mode all i get is plaid mode and then you can can i do a full one after yes hey do you have any extra steering wheel over there uh i haven't got any extra i've just got the perfect 360 degree amount but you haven't got a turn here are you ready i'm ready okay here we go and go oh oh my god that thing is flowing oh this is really quick oh stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop whoa this thing is so quick and somehow that thing is quicker quick eh oh yours is making quite a smell i used a bit more braking zone than we normally do yeah well that thing weighs like i'm just under 5000 pounds so we had a good start we were going off what's gonna happen when i use launch control i know we got away about eight bloody minutes for it i used every i got sport response everything so technically you've got just under 400 horsepower more than me i don't know what this secret sport response does but yeah you're still probably hundreds of horsepower more and i saw it i didn't expect to see it that obviously we started off pretty evenly and then i just the speed like i looked down at one point it said 250 kilometers like what it's incomprehensible speed uh well we're gonna have to comprehend it because we're about to up it let's go do the warm-up thing i'm gonna have a cup of coffee okay i actually can't wait to see what this is like with cheetah mode with the drag race mode oh the cheetah it's dropping it's dropping all right come on porsche i i i can't win but i'm i've got front row seats it's about as good as i can ask for okay here we go here we go here we go all right i'm kind of afraid of this now if i'm honest okay preparing for launch okay oh we've launched the same and he's and he's off focus go straight go straight oh my god come on this is a mind blowingly fast car the 911 turbo s is a mind-blowingly fast car it makes no sense that that tesla is doing what it's doing guys i've driven some really really really quick cars our drag strip is not that flat and that is really really scary here's what that is jesus break temperature high no that is so quick it turns out a thousand horsepower is a lot yep it's not it's the it's the silence it's so unsettling silent but deadly i've made that joke already farts so [Laughter] no honestly like i'm like heart beating i'm shaken up i'm overheated i'm taking this jacket off that was completely and utterly insane i'm not ready for internal combustion to go down like this okay it's it's 1100 horsepower gtr time okay let's see what happens all right i'm not going to be piloting the gtr because i kind of like my life this is this porsche is a happy place this is my happy place i'm staying here that and very highly tuned gtrs have engines that are sometimes not long for this world and this red one has 1100 wheel horsepower i'm sure it's fine but instead of being the midwife of a potential blowout i chose to set the races off instead [Music] on oh stop stop stop stop next we attempted a rolling race to give the gtr a chance to show its power but then this happened look no way look at that thing oh no are you going to limbo again no what happened apparently it was not meant to be so james determined to beat the plaid with something had one last trick up his sleeve another plaid but one whose owner put it on a diet i brought a gun to a gunfire did you you that's just another model that's plaid is it just another model s plaid is it so yours is wasted as a sedan because what these were really meant to be were bikes i have one seat in one seat yes we've got a couple of hundred pounds weight savings doctors hate him and uh got a bit more battery than you what are you on right now yeah yeah i'm i'm uh yeah i'm at 60 battery now i'm at 85. yeah so this is going to be my first difference between a fast car and a really fast car really fast this is for fun this is for fun this proves nothing proves nothing it does well if i magically win this it proves that there are heavy variances in tesla's quality control that is true you should not win this i guess we'll find out are you ready to go i still have one minute one minute of warming i have to pee i also need a pee it's moving me are you ready nope two minutes these are not real minutes these are tesla manufactured minutes it's one minute it's been five minutes for 13 minutes i got a front right safety restraint system thought oh because i haven't got a seat yeah that's cool that's cool all right you ready no that's not a minute there's no you time it from when he said a minute i'm still at two minutes what okay two cars going into cheetah mode here we go wow that's quick oh that's so cool on the display oh there's the horsepower there he goes [Music] okay it's okay there's no place like home there's no place like home i i i misjudged that i i thought the launch would be more aggressive it's not it's the second act two yes it's act two i agree yeah the launch is like it's not as much of a hit as it could be and then it goes [Laughter] the display doing the plaid thing and there's the fuzz [Laughter] so there's the end of the entire runway it's about 10 feet away yeah you're right that comes up real quick real quick yeah i was i was healthily into the high 250s low 260s oh easy easy yeah um so that ends the day i think that was quite an insane group of races i need a nap so what did we learn the most scientific piece of evidence two identical cars one without seats is quicker i wonder how this would do without doors without wheels [Laughter] i'm gonna go get in a car that has a normal steering wheel now goodbye okay okay so the only way to beat a model s plaid from a dig on an unprepped surface is with another model s plaid it turns out you can shave a tenth of a second or two off by removing all of the seats as for the gtr we actually had another one out on the day with similar horsepower as an insurance policy and yeah its transmission didn't like the power it had either so we tried the 911 turbo s is an arrow that flew straight and true every time we launched it and whilst it can stop quicker than the tesla the thousand horsepower in the plaid is just not to be trifled That Plaid needs better brakes ASAP

In their first Plaid video there was speculation that maybe they got one with already worn brakes to review but we can see here that two different Plaids had terrible braking, including one with a bunch of weight stripping.

Results as expected. The 911 initially kept up well but 1000hp are just in another league.

Seeing a Turbo S makes me excited about the upcoming Sport Classic: Turbo power with RWD and manual sounds promising.

Every time I see a drag race with a tuned car over 1000hp, they never work. GT-R's, Audi's, BMW's, whatever. What's the point of them if they can't do what they were meant to do? Why would you throw that much money at it?
