Teotihuacan Gameplay Runthrough

hey everybody today righto runs through toti walk on city of the gods which is a new worker placement game that's basically the spiritual sequel to the excellent sulk in the Mayan calendar one of Jen's in my favorite worker placement games of all time and I'm be showing you how this new game works in a two-player run-through although before I get going I strongly recommend you turn your subtitles on to the Klingon channel so that when I make rules goofs you'll know what they are okay have you done so I strongly recommend it turn on those Klingon subtitles you've done it okay then welcome to the city of the gods folk it is toti walk on I think I'm pronouncing that correctly and here at the center of this huge board we've got the pyramid which we are going to be working on constructing over the course of three lunar cycles every time this Eclipse marker comes all the way up here we're gonna score and then reset it and we're gonna go through several rounds of collecting resources to build the pyramid or decorate the pyramid or develop new technology or favor you know get the favor of the the noble class all kinds of stuff and before we get going there's a lot of setup that has to be done with this game first of all the board itself has to be set up and that means random worker placement and spaces are scattered around you can see there is already a preset worker placement space for this zone but he's been replaced with this one as part of the randomize setup and also a lot of these worker placement spaces have random tiles put on it these are the six technologies that will be available in this game but in another game there might be a different combination here's the different decorations for the pyramid that are available right now here are the stone blocks that we can build the pyramid with every time you play you're gonna get a different setup and nowhere is that more important than the players themselves because as part of setup each player gets four of these and picks two and this determines where their workers start out on the board and what types of resources they start with Jen she chose of these four she chose these two which gave her ten cacao I'll let her work her way up one step on the red and the green worship tracking she sees the blue player she's already gotten an extra cacao and a victory point for that but most importantly it let her level up two of her three workers that's what this little symbol means to level so while me I'm starting with three level one workers out here on the board jen has a level two and another level two or she could have started with a level one a level one and a level three if she wanted so Jen chose to start out by leveling her characters up and that means she did not get access to these two which would have given her potentially a lot of more of a leg up on the worship tracks me I went a different way I just ended up starting with a whole bunch of stone I've got six stone three gold two cacao and I also started up on a couple of the tracks I did not choose this one which would've given me some wood or this one which would to get it me going on the Avenue of the Dead Sea anyway we've got our start our starting set up I've got all my resource over there Jen's over there and we are ready to go and now here's the way the game works folks this is a very simple work replacement slash rondelle game the entire board is a rondelle and what you do on your turn is you pick one of your workers from one of the zones they're in by the way our starting zones were also determined by those starting player tiles so you pick one of your workers and you move him one two or three spaces clockwise around the board and since I'm starting out with all of the hat and building resources I want to get over here and start building this is the place where we actually build up the temple I want to spend some of that stone I've got so I since I can only move three spaces on the rondelle I could have this guy go one two or I could have this guy go one two three that's what I do here's my first move one two three and I have shown up ready to build because that's what we're here to do but there's some bookkeeping to be done first whenever you move your worker into a zone to do the core action of that zone if there are already workers there you got to pay some cacao which is basically the equivalent of money in this game everybody loves their a hot chocolate so since there is one unique color it doesn't matter how many individual dice it matters how many unique colors since there's one color here I have to pay one cacao to the bank of my starting four all right and I'm gonna need to get some more later but I've paid to get in here and now I can do the action now the interesting thing about this game is as you might imagine the more powerful your workers are the better actions they can do but also the more workers you have in a zone the better in action you can do and that's certainly the case here since I've only got one worker it doesn't matter what level he is I can build one of these blocks if I had two workers on this space I could build two if I had all three of my dice workers I could build three stones in one turn which I do have the resources for but it says I've only got one worker I'm just gonna build a single all right so I could build this this or this and I can build it on the ground floor the first floor the second floor or the tippy top although here's the randomized foundation that was set up as as part of setup there is no tippy top yet right now I can build in these two spaces or these two spaces on the ground floor or I could build here here or here you can see these little crosses that indicate building areas I could build here here here on the first floor and if I build on the ground floor it cost me two stone and I get one point if I build higher up it starts costing me lumber but I get more and more points as well so I'm definitely pay to stone of my starting six and I think I want to build this block because this is the only one that has a color icon on it when you're building and also when you're decorating though those tiles over there you want to match as many symbols on the the piece you're putting on the board as possible because that will score you bonus points but also if you can match colored pieces that will move you up on the appropriate worship track so I want to put this into space that this blue Idol covers up another Idol whether it's blue or not doesn't matter it only matters what the new piece is whether it's colored or not so where am I gonna put it I think up I see the more icons I can match the better so right off the bat if I look at this I could put it like this and you can see this covers this and this covers this that would give me two points the other two wouldn't match can I do better than two well I'd get nothing or I'd get one point there that's no good over here I could get two points but I wouldn't be covering up this I could come over here and I'd still only get two doesn't matter which way I rotate it if that goes there cover yeah so I get to anything on the second floor or on the ground floor that would get me one point that's not great yeah nope okay I think my first choice is the best I'm just going to come over here I'm gonna build this so I get since I'm matching these two icons I get two points plus I move up one on the blue track righty so I'm giving my points I get one two for matching the symbols plus one for just building on the ground floor yeah I'm on the way but I also move up the blue track which is the second time I've done it and I get one resource of my choosing I could get some more stones some lumber or some gold gold is incredibly valuable I'm gonna go ahead and take some gold there we go some gold okay so and now the last thing he returned is this is a reminder that since I spent one guy to build one token that guy levels up he goes from a level 1 to level 2 he's more powerful for future turns oh one more thing since I have actually contributed one piece towards the building or decorating of this temple I also move up one on the temple track there's potential for bonus points to be had if during the first Eclipse it is shown that I have contributed more to the pyramid than my opponents so I've worked my way up the temp or the the pyramid track I've leveled up I got some resources and okay at the end of my turn we got a refill and I see we got cool green so that'd be nice to build as well my turn is over it is now Jen's turn and what is she gonna do well first of all Jen's got a problem she started with tons of cacao which gives her a lot of flexibility about where she can go and she'll never have to worry about feeding her people but she has no building materials without gold lumber or stone you can't do much in this game so I think jen is gonna go and try to harvest something which means she has to travel and land in this pace to get some gold over here to get some lumber or over here to get some stone oh that's in this game in a different game those might be in different locations so Jen could go for that and I think she wants some gold right off the bat because gold is absolutely crucial for getting new technologies and also for decorations Jen started with no gold she start with a ton of cacao and that's good because for her first action she is gonna move her level to worker over here and remember how I said when you come into a new area if you're gonna do the core action of that area you have to pick a cow in this case Jen's gonna have to pay three cacao to work in this zone but fortunately she started with a ton so she can afford it spend a five she'll get three and change and now she gets to harvest some gold she came here with a level two that means she gets ax to this column but she only has a single worker so she gets access to this row or you know vice versa depending on how you're looking at it so a level two in this row gets her one gold alrighty so she just made her first gold she spent three cacao to get it it was expensive but she's gonna get good use of that gold and now the last thing she does is she levels up so Jen now has a level three worker and one gold but she's a little bit more hungry and now at the end of her turn because she is the last player in turn order we move up from the beginning to Space 1 on the Eclipse track once we've gone through enough rounds that the moon gets all the way over here and an eclipse starts that's gonna trigger a mid game scoring session where we have to feed our people or lose points and we score points based on how much we've contributed to the temple or the the pyramid how much we've worked our way up the Avenue of the Dead and how many Serie ceremonial masks we have collected there's a whole set collection element of this game like here's a mask right here and here's a mask actually if somebody's working their way up the Avenue of the Dead really quick they could get this map oh my gosh there's a bunch of masks that could be pretty cool if you'd worked your way up here and gotten these masks you can have a big score when we get to the first Eclipse or you could get all your scoring from working on the temple there's a lot of ways to go in this game anyway for now Jen's turn is over she's gotten one gold it is my turn again and now I want to build some more cuz I've still got a bunch of resources I'm gonna take this guy and he's gonna go one two and now there are two unique colors here because my guy does count I have to pay two cacao to come here it's getting more expensive and by the way when we first started remember at the beginning I had a choice of which guy I was gonna move over into this zone and I chose this one instead this one I left this guy here to make it more because I anticipated Jen might want to come and get gold and because I'd left my guy here it made it more expensive for her to come so there is a little bit of indirect interaction there depending on how you place your workers but anyway that's beside the point I'm coming here with the second guy and because I've got it doesn't matter what level they are because I've got two guys I can build two and it just so happens I've got enough resources to build two more temples or you know two more on to the pyramid and so I definitely wanna build this one because hey I can work my way up the green temple if I match this icon so I've once again a guy decide am I gonna build on the ground floor there's still three ground floors or am I gonna build on the second floor and again I want to match as many oh my gosh look at this if I build right here on the second floor that matches three icons and it would give me my green match as well can I do better than that can I match for I do not see any place where I could build no I can't do that so I'm gonna build here on the second floor with this that's gonna cost since it's the second floor it costs two stone and a lumber very expensive but I'm building here and ah for that I get three points plus three more for matching symbols is six one two three four five six woohoo I have made more contributions to the pyramid and I get to move up one on the green track which gets me a sweet sweet cacao back ah because this is our lifeblood this is what we have to feed people when we get to the Eclipse phase alright so but I'm not done yet since I've got two guys here I'm gonna build a second one I can build either of these and I'm gonna have to build on the ground floor because at this point all I got left is two stone so I'm gonna completely bankrupt myself and build this or this on one of the remaining ground ground floor spaces and which one has C so this over here would get me two points or two points yeah that's that's okay it's not great actually yeah I think the best I can do is two points with any of these yeah with uh I mean I could get two points with this yep okay let's just going ahead and build this one I'll go like this and I'm building on the ground floor so that's one point plus these two matching symbols gives me three more one two three alright and I have scored three points but unfortunately there was no color on here so I don't get to work my way up the the matching color worship track so I just made some points um but I have once again contributed and every for every one of these not only is there the points for being the most prodigious builder but there's points for every step I'm gonna make during the eclipse all right so I'm completely broke oh but this guy well actually I should say one of the two workers that built these levels up so I can turn my two and two or three or I can turn my one into a - I think I'm just gonna spread my love around and not put all my eggs in one basket I'm gonna have to level twos just like Jen started with two level 2s or do I want a level three no you know I'm gonna I'm gonna go for a level three you know I'm gonna go try to level up one guy really quick and there's reasons for that because once a guy gets to level six he ascends and you can start getting huge bonuses that way so if I get this guy leveling up faster that could really benefit me right soon so that was that and now at the end of my turn we got to add two more blocks coming out and here's another nice colored one and a black and white one all right so that was my second turn it is now Jen's second turn and Jen wants more gold her other guy who starts out way over here she's gonna go one two three and now unfortunately there are three neat colors here even though I've left Jen left one here so this counts Jen's got to pay three more cacao to get this gold but now she's got two guys here a level two and level three it's the lowest one that determines what row she's in so she's in this row she's in this column Jen just made two more gold so Jen just burned a lot of cacao to get a lot of gold but she can also level up again this guy could become a four or this guy could become a three I think she's gonna spread him out so both of her guys are level threes now boom so she's got a level up she's got a bunch of gold but she is nowhere near as rich in cacao as she used to be and now at the end of return we're getting one step closer to the Eclipse folks and it is my turn again and now I'm all done building I would think I threw all my starting resources and even though I wanted to build these guys are already here I'd have to spend several turns this guy would have to go one two three and now in the next turn one two three to make it all the way around so I could do a third action fight all three of my guys here I'd get to build three things but that doesn't do me any good because I do not have the resources to build so what am I gonna do instead well I've got all this gold this sweet sweet gold so I think instead I am going to [Music] um take my new level three and he's just gonna move no he's not well I want to come over here I want to come over here and get us some technology because I have all this gold I can spend to unlock technology to help me for the rest of the game but I'd have to spend to cacao to get in because there's two characters here I should say of course I'm yellow Jan is blue as in a two-player game is part of random I set up three black dummy dice and three red dummy die so you know the non used colors are randomly put around the board to tighten the board up a little bit so you know and it's really important because if there was anybody here I'd come here for sure not at the faint thing but now I got to pay to my last two cacao to go there although no there's nothing else I can do instead what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna attend my little wussy guy over here he's gonna come over here and whenever you drop a guy off in a zone there are actually three things you can do so far you've only shouldn't seen one thing you've seen me doing the core action building harvesting whatever it might be but and if you do the core action you've got to pay cacao to get in now instead if you don't want to or cannot do the core action you can instead harvest more cacao and the cacao you get is equal to the number of unique colors plus one when you get there so I'm gonna send my little wussy guy over here not to spend cacao to do this action but to harvest cacao so he's coming in I see there's two unique colors it's two plus a number of unique colors plus one I just got three cacao one two three so now I'm feeling pretty chocolate flush again and now he doesn't do anything else and when you use a die not to do the core action but to harvest he does not level up so he stays a lowly level one okay so that was my turn and when you harvest that's it you just move into a place you harvest cacao equal the number of colors there plus one and then your turn is over so now it is Jen's turn again Jen spent her first couple of turns harvesting all of this gold the reason she did that is because she wanted to rush over here and get some manual get some technology herself here's the problem though she'll have to pay three cacao to get me because I just showed up oh my gosh this is so expensive you can see why Jen opted to have so much cacao is part of her set up so that she she's flush with cash is she gonna do it anyway um yes she will and her question is does she moved this single guy over here or does she move one of her level threes over she'll move one of her level threes over one two three she just arrived there's three already here she's got to pay three cacao one two three and now she's down to five oh my gosh but a single guy here gives her access to the low-level technologies if she had two guys here she would have access to the high-level technologies or alternatively if she had a level four or a level five she'd have access to the high-level technologies but as it is she only has access to the low which cost one gold so Gina's gonna spend one of those gold she's harvest she already paid the cacao to get in now she's paying one gold to get this technology this technology or this technology and after she's done this guy will level up again there's a reminder right there he'll level up to a four so which technology is Jen want this one says whenever she builds housing for the people which is zone six or whenever she decorates the pyramid or no not decorates pyramid what's know it was on five zone 500 its technology whenever Jen if Jen cakes this technology went from now on whenever she increases more technology or builds housing she will just score three points nice and simple instead if she comes over here whenever she goes to zones two three or four to harvest lumber stone or gold she will get one additional above and beyond what she should get I think Jen you can see how important cacao is Jenny's gonna lock in this technology and this says whenever Jim completely goes the Ron the Ron Dell and makes it back to zone one she gets one cacao for free so Jen does not want to be short on cash anytime so she has locked this in for herself and that's that okay and I remember the last thing she leveled up and then at the end of return we're getting one step closer to an eclipse and now it's my turn and oh my gosh see here's the thing I had originally it was gonna send this guy over to get some cacao and then I was going to send this guy over and because I have two guys here I'd have access to the second level where everything costs to gold but hey you know I've got the gold for it but now gins come here so it's gonna cost me four cacao to get into this zone instead of three oh my gosh how bad do I want this maybe I should skip it huh ah man I think I am I think I am I you know cacao is so tight and when we get to the end of Eclipse we got to have a lot of cacao on hand to feed our people or we lose a lot of points and so Jen getting here ahead of me has pushed it over the tipping point I did come here to harvest I was gonna spend that harvest to cut but I'm not going to I'm gonna change things up I'm gonna want to keep building so I'm gonna go one two and I'm gonna come over here and I'm gonna harvest some more lumber or some more stones so I can keep building the pyramid so now this guy showed up there unfortunately I already had to go mmm I already had a guy here which means I have to pay hit in and then the problem is I've got two guys and hey I've got a mid-level guy who it should give me two stone but it's my low-level guy that will help me back so I'll only get one so no I'm not gonna move him in yet I'm gonna get this guy out of the way so on my next turn I can come here and not have to take a cow and a level three on level one will give me one stone so I need to get that guy all the way I need to go do something else with him what is he going to do there's not much form to do because of the way the random setup is done in this particular game I could come here and if I had lumber I could build housing I need to lumber I don't have any lumber I could come over here and visit the nobles but that means I would have to lock my die up and I wouldn't get it back for a while now instead sensor somebody here I could come over here and just harvest some cacao it wouldn't be bad I'd get to cacao for coming here or I could come over here where I need gold I do have gold instead of using gold to get the technology yeah I'm gonna get this guy all the way he's gonna go one two three there's nobody in this zone I don't have to pay any cacao to come here but since he's by himself I have to pay the full price of three gold to do a decoration if I had a second guy here I'd only have to pay two gold if I had all three of my guys here I'd only have to pay one Gold this is gonna be very expensive but hey it's nice to decorate a pyramid isn't it I'm gonna spend three of my gold so there go my dreams of nice level to technology but hey I've still got one gold so I could get a level one technology later on so I've come over here since he's by himself I'm spending three and I could take any of these on display and once again you'll notice there's all the pattern matching the icon matching and so I've got to pick a tile and then put it on the pyramid and I want to match colors wherever possible although I got asked do I want to work my way up the blue or the green if I work my way up the green hey I'll hit this space and I'll be able to get this mask although here's a problem if I want to pick up this ceremonial mask which can score me points during the Eclipse I have to have lumber on hand alright don't have a number on hand so since I wouldn't be able to pick up the mask I instead we just get one cacao which is the consolation prize now instead I can work my way up to blue and get more resources so I think I want to work my way up the blue that's what I want to do although man this would be perfect cuz this is let me move up the blue and the green but here's the thing I'd have to match both of these colors and both these icons and there's no place I can do it cuz you'll notice there's a little arrow here the arrow indicates which way the tile has to face so it has to start of the first decoration has to start on these ground floors so the first one could be like this and that would match one of the two icons and let me move with the blue and then once this is placed another one could be placed right here and then once this is placed if it gets built up another one can be placed here and so on all the way up the side of the pyramid as we continue to build so in none of these three places I can build are both of these icons manual that's something I could have been paying attention to well no I actually hmm and nor can I ignore is there any place where I can get a double like this let's go on ahead and grab this one and let's go on ahead and put it like oh I was just talking about although this will work too so what am I going to get for doing this well first of all whenever you contribute to you get three points for decoration plus one point for every matching icon I've got one an Qing icon so that's four points two three four also you have once again contributed to the construction so I'm up on that and because this matched I move up one more on the blue which gives me one resource of my choosing I could get another goal and then I've got to gold again which means I could once again go for trying to get a higher level technology let's do that I'm gonna take a second gold alright and now if I can go up once more I can give myself a free opportunity to go up the blue track or I could give my if I have cacao I can give myself the ability to go up any track so I want to keep on going up plus you'll notice there were three randomly chosen in-game bonus scores if I make it all the way up here I get two points for every unique discovery tile I've gotten over the course of the game this is an opportunity to score all of my ceremonial masks one additional time at the end of the game and this is just a straight up 15 points so there's a race to grab these tokens as fast as possible too because they can really make the game at the end but anyway so I got gold so I'm planning to come around here and get one of these higher level technologies later on although that means I'm gonna have to leave a guy here so I can come in with so I have two guys but anyway so I right so I got my one two three four points and I moved up the blue for that and I climbed up this and as always my guy leveled up and so at the end of my turn we have a new tile coming out and oh my gosh with this one no it's backwards alright so that one's no better alright oh that's still nice it'd be opportunity to work your way up the red track which just scores you more and more and more points the higher if the red track you go so that was my turn it is now Jen's turn again she's got two gold if she wanted to come over here she could since she's had one guys she could get a level two technology and she could she could move her level three all the way over here and come into this zone or I mean she's got this level one who's doing nothing other than making it more expensive for me to build he could be the one who comes over here and give her a level two technology and all right so his now Jen's gonna do well Jen needs to think a little bit more long-term about what it is she's trying to go for I mean because you know at the end of every one of her turns the Eclipse gets closer and closer Jen wants to be working away at the Avenue of the Dead or working on the temple or collecting masks so that when we get to that Eclipse she can score some points I've been doing something great Jen has not what is she gonna she's got to give herself an overall strategy to pursue before the eclipse gets here what is gonna do well you know what folks I'm gonna think about it for a little bit and you can find out if you come back and watch the extended playthrough where I'll play all the way through to the first Eclipse you can see the basis of the game or instead you can go to final thoughts your choice in five four three two one
