"Ten Ways to Help America" | Pastor Steve Gaines

back in the 1800s there was a french aristocrat named alexis de tocqueville he wrote a famous book called democracy in america it is still to this day considered a classic among scholars in political science after de tocqueville visited america in 1831 almost 200 years ago he said and i quote i sought for the greatness of america the united states i sought for her greatness in her commodious harbors ample rivers fertile fields and boundless forests but it was not there i sought for her greatness in her rich minds her vast world commerce her public school system and in her institutions of higher learning and yet it was not there i looked for her greatness in her democratic congress her matchless constitution but it was not there not until i went into the churches of america this was 200 years ago not until i went into the churches of america and i heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did i understand the secret of her genius and power america is great because america is good and if america ever ceases to be good america will cease to be great we all know that we have a checkered history we all know that for over 200 years we allowed slavery we know that we have sinful things going on not just in the past but even today ungodliness can walk down the street and be proud about it little babies as defenseless as they can be unborn babies being killed every day not to mention all of us and our own sins we are a people that should humble ourselves and ask god to forgive us the only greatness in america is jesus christ who lives among his people god is not an american we are and we're supposed to pray for our country i'll talk more about that momentarily but i want to give you a plan i know that you have a big blank piece of paper there but i want you to know my notes are here i don't have blanks i'm going to give you 10 ways to help america and if we were in brazil the title would be the same except for the last word ten ways to help brazil ten ways to help russia ten ways to help england ten ways to help wherever you live i believe god wants us to pray for the nation in which we live that's where we live that's where we're to be salt and light more about that momentarily and the bible says in psalm 33 verse 12 would you read this with me off the screen read it good and strong blessed is the nation whose god is the lord the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance read that first part that first line again with me please blessed is the nation whose god is the lord let me just share with you some things that would help america if we would participate in these ten things number one if you have never done this today please number one receive jesus as savior and lord the best thing you can do for any country is to be saved to know the lord to make sure that you have given your heart to jesus christ now how do you do that well it's not complicated but it does take tremendous commitment on your part the first thing you have to do in order to be saved is you have to repent of your sin you cannot go to heaven if you don't repent to repent means to do an about-face spiritually to stop the way that you're going and to start going toward jesus with jesus you've got to repent the bible says at the beginning of his ministry jesus said these words in mark chapter 1 verses 14 and 15. now after john that's john the baptist had been imprisoned or taken into custody jesus came into galilee it's my favorite part of the holy land trip is galilee preaching the gospel of god and what did he say the time is fulfilled the kingdom of god is at hand here's the first thing out of his mouth repent and believe in the gospel if you don't repent you go to hell if you don't repent you're not a christian jesus said so you've got to turn doesn't mean you become sinless but it means you're sorry for your sin and you turn you say god i don't want to live for myself anymore i turn my back on my old life i don't want that i turn toward you i repent secondly you have to believe and before i get into the belief part let's just go back i got to share with you this one verse about repentance when peter was preaching and they had come to the beautiful gate there at the temple and this lame man was healed and he went inside to worship for the first time ever the bible says he was blind and he was made to see and then peter had the crowd there and he said this therefore acts 3 19 repent and return so that your sins may be washed or wiped away in order that times or seasons of refreshing might come to you from the presence of the lord i just want to encourage you best thing you'll ever do if you've never done it is to repent of your sin number two under this same thing receiving jesus as savior and lord you've got to believe in jesus you've got to believe and trust that what he did on the cross and at the empty tomb was for you you've got to personalize it you hear me say it a lot but listen this time you've got to believe that when jesus went on that cross that he was dying in your place you've got to believe that you've got to believe that you've got to believe that jesus perished on the cross and died as an atoning sacrifice to pay the penalty for your sin the most famous verse in the bible talks about this john chapter 3 verse 16 jesus spoke these words he said read it with me please for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life when paul was preaching at philippi he said believe in the lord jesus christ and you will be saved you and your household have you ever believed not just believe that jesus is real but have you ever believed on jesus have you ever put your faith in jesus christ have you ever believed that he died for you that he rose from the dead for you and you believe that that is all you need to save you have you ever savingly believed in jesus have you repented have you believed and then thirdly have you received will you receive him today you've got to volitionally willfully open up your heart and invite christ to come in to your life bible says in john chapter 1 verse 12 but as many as received him to them he gave the right to become children of god you don't have the right to become a child of god until you receive him even to those who believe in his name you've got to call on the name of the lord paul quoted joel chapter 2 when he said in romans chapter 10 verse 13 for whoever or whosoever will call upon the name of the lord will be saved do you want america to be better then you're part of america you need to be better and you can't be better until you get saved give your heart to christ before you leave this room give your heart to jesus christ number two be a spirit-filled mature christian be a spirit-filled mature christian every christian receives the holy spirit at conversion the moment you get saved the spirit of god takes up residency in your body you are baptized by the holy spirit the bible says in first corinthians 12 you are baptized by the holy spirit into christ the moment you get saved and it's a picture of someone drowning you fall into christ and then the holy spirit comes to live within you it literally means you fall into living water you fall into christ and then he drowns you if he will he he lets you die and then he comes alive in you with the power of the holy spirit of god it's one of the most beautiful pictures in the bible and i just want to ask you has that ever happened to you have you ever given your heart to christ that's what you get the holy spirit when you get saved but you need to be filled by the holy spirit he said well how does that happen he's already within me it's not that you receive more of the holy spirit he's a person you don't get him in a little bit at a time you know you don't get him in a staggered manner no you get him all at once but now the holy spirit's filling is what jesus talked about when he said rivers of living water will boil or flow out of you and that's the filling of the holy spirit one baptism we're baptized into the spirit and into christ the moment we're saved but then we have these fillings that come out of us all the time i prayed before i came up here noah prayed for me this morning donna prayed for me before i left while ago donna prayed for me and prayed for me to be filled with the holy spirit you need to be it's not just preachers you need to be filled with the holy spirit and it's a flowing from within this living water that flushes out of you and it flows out of you and empowers you to live the christian life you know what that's about the bible says in ephesians 5 18 you need to be spirit filled don't get drunk with wine that's dissipation that's excess but be filled with the holy spirit now that used to bother me i didn't really like that comparison i didn't like the fact that he had drunkenness at the first part of the sentence and getting filled with the holy spirit at the end of the sentence but then i started realizing it made a lot of sense you see how does that make sense well look at me when people get drunk they walk differently they think differently they talk differently and they act differently have you ever seen somebody drunk they're different aren't they you ever seen somebody filled with the holy spirit they walk differently they talk differently they think differently they are different because they're filled from within with the holy spirit so it's the perfect analogy that's because it's in the word of god and what is the manifestation it's the fruit of the spirit it is christ's likeness when you're filled with the holy spirit the holy spirit points us to jesus we become more like christ and what is that the fruit of the spirit what is it nine aspects love joy peace patience right in the middle of it is kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness and self-control i want to ask you are you filled with the holy spirit do you have those attributes coming out of you are you a spirit-filled christian are you a mature christian once you get saved you're a babe you're a spiritual babe the moment you get saved you're born again that's why the bible says in first peter 2 verse 2 like newborn babies long yearn for the pure milk of the word of god you need to get in the word and get the word in you and when you do that you will grow and respect the salvation my favorite verse to pray for people as they grow and mature in christ is second peter 3 18. you ought to write that one down it says this but grow in grace and in the knowledge of our lord and savior jesus christ to him and then he just breaks out into doxology peter just gets happy to him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity amen are you a spirit-filled christian are you maturing are you letting the spirit who is in you flow out of you in your speech in your actions in your demeanor in your life do you have love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness self-control coming out of you do you that's what you can do for america you become a spirit-filled mature christian you'll help america number three you need to obey the law and true to form in this third service i've preached this not an amen yet did you know that government comes from god he said well i don't like government i won't tell you it's because you don't know what it would be like to live in a land where there's no real government where people are just riding around shooting people and killing people and breaking into this breaking into that well they're already doing that whether they'd be doing a lot more if we didn't have government the bible says in romans 13 verses 1 and following every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities for there is no authority except from god and those which exist are established by god therefore whoever now he's talking about the roman empire here by the way what a bunch of saved people he was talking about therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of god and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves for rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior but for evil do you want to have no fear of authority do what is good and you will have praise from the same for it is a minister of god to you government is for good but if you do what is evil be afraid for it doesn't bear the sword for nothing for it is a minister of god second time he said that an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil therefore it is necessary to be in subjection not only because of wrath but also for conscious sake for because of this you also pay taxes for rulers or servants of god devoting themselves to this very thing render to all what is due them tax to whom tax is due custom to whom custom fear to whom fear honor to whom honor god put in government so that there wouldn't be complete chaos in society you say now wait a minute brother steve there are some ungodly governments out there and sometimes america passes laws like roe versus wade and all these other things at one time slavery was the law of the land here that government is not perfect no it's not so there's one other sub-point i want to give you yes you obey the law in the sense that government comes from god but don't forget god also comes before government if look at me i'll i'll say it as plain as i know how to say it when government comes against god and against his laws you go with god isn't that what the disciples said they were told in acts chapter 4 and 5 don't you preach anymore in the name of jesus in jerusalem or we'll throw you into jail they said peter and his apostles and apostles censored we must obey god rather than man if they make a law and they say okay in memphis or in tennessee or in america you can't preach the gospel anymore i got a feeling the jails are going to be filled up with a bunch of preachers who keep on preaching the gospel amen if they say that you can't gather any more in the name of jesus not because of kova just because we don't want you to i got a whole lot of feeling here that there's going to be a whole lot of jails that can't hold all the christians because we're not going to obey man if he tells us to disobey god it says check the balance there yes government comes from god but god comes before government obey the law until or unless it contradicts god's law number four pray for america well i just don't think i should well you should you know you say well america is wicked so was babylon babylon was so wicked that in the new testament when they described what it was like in the great tribulation they talked about babylon that's how bad babylon was in the old testament and yet jeremiah whom jesus quoted more than any other prophet jeremiah said this to the exiles in babylon now listen what he said jeremiah 29 7. seek the welfare of the city where i have sent you into exile seek the welfare of babylon and pray to the lord on its behalf for in its welfare or prosperity you will have welfare or prosperity now if he said that about babylon if they could pray for babylon i can pray for america if i lived in china i'd be praying for china if i lived in japan i'd be praying for japan if i lived in england i'd be praying for england i think you get the point it's it's a mute point every christian on this earth is a stranger and we are just pilgrims walking through that we this is not our home all right god is not an american god is not from france god is not english and all that god is god god is god and god is in charge so wherever you are pray for the nation where you are we are in america we need to pray for america the bible says in ezekiel 22 30 god was looking just for one man and this also was referring to babylon who would pray and stand in the gap for him that's prayer language all right i searched for one man amen among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap what happens when you pray you help build up spiritual walls how many of you believe that america needs a defense against the attack of the of the enemy satan our enemy i'm not talking about somebody that you don't like i'm talking about the devil all right we need spiritual walls and it they're built up when we pray he said i was looking for somebody who would build up the wall i was looking for somebody who would stand in the gap before me for the land so that i would not destroy but i found no one i wonder if the same god who was looking in ezekiel and jeremiah's day for just a few people that would stand up and pray and quit complaining all the time and quit griping all the time and quit condemning everybody all the time if you just go in your prayer closet and start crying out to god he would build up a wall and he would stand in the gap and god would do something that he's not going to do if we don't pray amen how do i pray what do i pray for pray for your leaders well i didn't vote for him so what so what pray for them first timothy 2 1-2 first of all then i urge that in treaties and prayers petitions thanksgivings be made on behalf of all men all means all that's all all means for kings and for all who are in authority there's all again so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in godliness and dignity pray for whoever is in office pray for them i don't miss a day praying for whoever is the president united states i've been doing it for years i've prayed for a long time for different ones some i voted for some i didn't that's immaterial i'm supposed to pray for them i also pray geographically i pray sometimes over a map just state by state and i always pray scripture when i pray for america i pray ii chronicles 7 14 lord i pray that we your people christians called by your name we'll humble ourselves pray seek your face turn from our wicked ways then you'll hear from heaven forgive our sin heal our land pray for america every christian should pray for america number five develop a godly family that's something you can do for america you say i'm divorced start where you are go forward if you can get back with your spouse do it if you can't move on you can't you can't undo something sometimes my mother was divorced and then she lived 56 years married to my daddy she got divorced when she was 17 18 years old but she didn't let it ruin her life sometimes you just got to move on maybe you're single maybe your family doesn't love the lord maybe they make fun of you for coming to a church like bellevue that believes the word and preaches the word and worships jesus and lifts our hands and shout and all that kind of stuff maybe they don't like that don't understand it they think you've lost your mind aren't you glad that even though we look like we've lost our minds aren't you glad we're in our right mind amen praise god joshua said these famous words in joshua 24 14-15 now therefore fear of the lord that is have reverence for the lord serve him in sincerity and truth put away the gods the idols which your father served which were beyond the river and in egypt and serve the lord if it's disagreeable in your sight to serve the lord choose for yourselves the day whom you will serve whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the river or the gods of the amorites and whose land you are living but now say the last part with me say it out good and strong now but as for me and my house we will serve the lord i can't answer for everybody else but i can tell you this ask for john stephen gaines and for my wife and for our kids and for their families we're going to serve the lord whatever happens is going to happen what's going to happen with i don't know and you don't either god may send a revival god may flush the whole nation down down the tubes i don't know what's going to happen but i know this it will be better if we pray than if we don't pray and i believe with all of my heart god's still in the miracle working business so i'm going to just say god i i i don't know what anybody else is going to do but it's for me in my house i'm with joshua i'm going to pray and i'm going to try to live for you we're going to serve the lord the most sustained succinct text on the family in the whole bible is colossians 3 18-21 you have all four aspects of a family and here's what it says wives be subject to your husbands as is fitting to the lord let the husband lead be a loving leader and respect that wives husbands love your wives don't be embittered against them don't be embedded against them means be sweet all right that's what she's always telling you fella if you would just be sweet a whole lot of things would change in your marriage just a thought all right then children be obedient to your parents in all things this is well pleasing the lord parents parents don't spoil your children don't don't give them everything they want don't always take their side even when they're wrong don't spoil them don't let them talk back to you no amens i don't care when they got an attitude don't give in to it some young people are an attitude attached to a mouth they'll get over it you did but however you want to discipline them do it as long as it's not abuse i'm talking about that i can tell you this my daddy disciplined me then it says fathers don't exasperate your children so that they won't lose heart don't constantly put your kids down encourage your kids so that they won't lose heart that's a godly family develop a godly family number six be a faithful member of a local church i talk to people are you a christian well sure or you go to church well i don't go to church you'll never go to church no i don't go to church i got a real wonder if are you really a christian are you really a christian if you don't ever go to church you don't ever get around the body of christ well i prayed the prayer so what a lot of people mouth off words and don't mean it i'll tell you something you get saved you're going to want to be with other christians the bible says this is my favorite verse about the church in the whole bible acts 9 31 so the church throughout all judea and galilee and samaria enjoyed peace be we're built up go on in the fear of the lord come for the holy spirit they continue to increase five things that happen to them you see if you are a christian you need to be a faithful member you need to come together with other christians so that you can stimulate one another so that you can encourage one another and you can't do that if you don't ever assemble now how many times a month or a year i don't know how much but enough that you could actually say you did some assembling there hebrews 10 24 25 let us consider how to stimulate one another to love into good deeds how do we do that not forsaking our own assembling together as is the habit of some but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the day the day of christ coming drawing near you find you a good church and you get involved and you attend and you be part of it and don't just go there so that they can bless you go in there and try to be a blessing to somebody else get involved number seven you want to make america a better place you want to help america share jesus with lost people you got to open your mouth and share the gospel right at the beginning of his ministry jesus said to a bunch of fishermen in john in matthew chapter 4 verse 19. he said to them follow me and i'll make you fishers of men i love that imagery by the way you know when you go fishing now this is really profound listen what i might say when you go fishing you gotta fish to catch fish you can't just sit around and look at the bait you can't just look around and say look at this rod and reel man this is awesome you can't just say man this is the best stool i've ever seen in my life look at that little thing over there that little line i'm going to put those fish on no you got to start fishing if you're going to catch fish you got to throw out the bait or you got to throw out the net and you know what if you're going to tell people about jesus and win people to christ you've got to share the gospel you've got to do it you've got to throw out the gospel net why are a lot of people not being saved is it because that god has not predestined for them to be saved or is it because we are not obeying the great commission of god to share the gospel with lost people i think it's the latter people are not getting saved because we don't share the gospel we come and we hear a sermon and then we put the little notes up and that was nice and now we live our whole week and we come back again and we look at another sermon and that's great no i'm all inspired we go back but we don't witness we don't share the gospel we don't engage people we don't talk to them about jesus you say me you i'm in the seminary so what none of the disciples have been to seminary they didn't know what a master of divinity was they even have a bachelor's but they followed jesus and he said follow me and i'll make you fishers of men you go with me you're going to be fishing for men you're going to be telling people about me and that was at the beginning of his ministry at the end of his ministry saying the same thing matthew 28 he's risen from the dead he says in 1920 go therefore and make disciples and make disciples includes winning people to jesus or there's no gospel in the great tribulation make disciples win them to jesus and then help them to become a disciple of all the nations baptize them after they get saved in the name of the father son the holy spirit and then teach them once they get saved and baptized teach them to observe all that i've commanded you if you'll do that lo and behold i'll be with you even to the end of the age and the very last thing jesus said before he went to heaven after he'd been resurrected for 40 days was about evangelism i'm telling you when i would leave the the house when i was a teenager and i had the car keys and my mom knew i was going to be gone the last thing she said to me was the most important on her mind at that time so the last thing that jesus says to us before he goes back to heaven has got to be one of if not the most important things he could ever say and what does he talk about he talks about evangelism but you will receive power when the holy spirit has come upon you and you shall be my witnesses both in jerusalem judea samaria and even to the remotest part of the earth when i pray that for this church i say father i pray in the name of jesus that we will receive i prayed it this morning that we will receive power when the holy spirit has come upon us here at bellevue and that lord we will receive power when the holy spirit is coming and we shall be your witnesses both in cordova memphis shelby county the mid-south the nation and the nations oh god let us be a witness for christ you want to make our nation a better place for everybody to live start sharing the gospel of jesus christ number eight be salt and light now this is a little different but it goes along with evangelism but it's actually sharing the principles and the truths of scripture engaging them with the culture and we're the only ones that do it we are the salt we are the light jesus said so in matthew 5 13 and following you are the salt of the earth but if the salt has become tasteless how could it be made salty again it's good for nothing anymore except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men you're the light of the world a city cannot sit a sit a city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor do does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lamp stand and he gives light to all her in the house let your light shine say that with me let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and not glorify you but glorify your father who is in heaven you're the salt of the earth you're supposed to preserve look at me the only reason america hasn't already been flushed down the toilet is because we are the salt of the earth we are the only thing keeping america from going totally totally down we're the salt we are the preserving factor take out the christians and you know what you call that the great tribulation and we are the light look at me buddhism is not the light islam is not the light wiccanism is not the light atheism is not the light jesus is the light and his followers are the light of the world we're the only ones that have the saving truth about god so what do we do we engage our community we're not going to be pulling away no we're going to be going in we're going to be salt and light we're going to get involved we're going to get to know our neighbors we're going to get involved in our children's school activities we're going to serve our community in strategic ways we're going to volunteer we're going to be room mothers room daddies and whatever else we're going to stay informed on social issues we're not going to be ignorant because the bible says in proverbs 24 by wisdom a house is built by understanding it's established for by wise guidance you can wage war because in abundance of councillors there's victory when you have a little understanding of the issues that are going on in our society then you're able to engage the culture and if you don't have any knowledge about what i'm talking about just go listen for a few days to the podcast of albert mohler at albertmoler.com al is a dear friend of mine and i'm going to tell you something i don't agree with every little thing he says but i'd say 99 of what he says i agree with it one of the most thought-provoking people i've ever heard if you don't like him go find somebody else but get involved and get to know what the issues are about and then share your views with others quit being negative by the way don't say i'm against this i'm against this people get tired of that people get tired of that tell them what you're for what are you for i'm for racial harmony i am for racial racial reconciliation i am for i am for pro-biblical marriage i am for unborn babies having the right to live i am for these things because i am for the gospel of jesus christ be salt and light number nine get involved politically say i knew that one was coming you don't know what's coming because i didn't give you the blanks everybody in here i don't care who you vote for you ought to register and you ought to vote if you don't vote don't complain and if you vote for somebody and your person doesn't get in pray for the guy that got in no candidates stances know what the people know what they believe you can access it and then once in a while if if you are alarmed by something like you know something might be going on you don't like the equality act because it's going to hurt churches with the lgbtq plus movement if you don't like that or if you feel like that doesn't need to be put into law call your congress contact your congressman he said i don't know what the number is i got the answer for that too 202 224 31-21 all of washington answers to that number it's awesome you ought to know that number you ought to have it in your phone i've got it in my phone now i'm going to blow your mind with the last one run for political office either be willing to or quit griping about the people who are in office amen well i don't have the background amen a lot of people in office that don't have the background amen you'll be just fine get involved politically and then the last thing to me is the most important i saved the best for last would you read it off the screen with me please would you read that here we go pray for revival revival is god's people coming alive in christ would you stand up please after you write down revival pray for revival i know i've made you write out the whole outline i know i've been tough on you today i want us to read some of the most sacred scripture in all the bible it's all sacred but to me you don't get better when it comes to praying for america you don't get better praying for revival then ii chronicles 7 13 14. read it with me please and this is god speaking here we go if i shut up the heavens so that there is no rain or if i command the locust to devour the land or if i send pestilence among my people now watch this and my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray seek my face turn from their wicked ways then i will hear from heaven i will forgive their sin i will heal their life how many of you believe that's the word of god does anybody believe that's the word of god well if it's the word of god amen amen you know let's just do it let's just do it i don't understand prayer i i really sometimes i'll be praying and i'll just say lord why would you want to listen to me [Music] sometimes i feel like my prayers are so selfish i pray for protection i pray for all this instead of saying your kingdom come your will be done sometimes i'll be honest with you when i pray i i'm afraid pastor sometimes i want my will but i think if i didn't pray i'd be a lot worse than i am i'd be a lot more selfish than i am so i'm gonna pray for revive i've been praying for revival for a long time i remember when i was a boy the jesus movement i remember hundreds of my friends getting saved i got saved at the end of that i sure would like to see god fill up stadiums with teenagers nowadays like they did back in the late 60s and early 70s highest baptisms we've ever had in the southern baptist convention first five years of the 1970s at the end of the jesus movement the tide has been out for 40 years 50 years it's time for the tide to come back in would you find somebody there by you and if you want a distance that's fine but would you just don't let anybody not have somebody to pray with would you just pray for god to send revival to our nation would you do that right now please do that just take a minute we're just going to take a minute it's not going to be long it's not going to be drawn out but just pray for revival pray for god to sin revival [Music] [Music] god's house is a house of prayer god's house is a house of prayer [Music] [Music] so lord in many ways you have shut up the heavens so that there is no rain in many ways you have cut off the anointing of the holy spirit there is no reign of the holy spirit in many places and lord our land is filled with locusts that are devouring it spiritual locusts like the ones we read about in the revelation and lord what do we have to say about pestilence we've just come through and we're still going through covet 19. you said if i shut up the heavens so that there is no rain if i command the locust to devour the land if i send pestilence among my people among my people and my people called by my name will humble themselves god forgive us for our pride our arrogance our prayerlessness the worst form of pride [Music] help us to humble ourselves and to pray to beseech you to beg you help us to seek your face not just your hand what you can do for us but just for who you are just your faith dear god and may we turn from our wicked ways help us to stop trying to straighten everybody else out dear god but help us to turn from our sinful ways dear god then you said i will hear from heaven i will forgive your sin i will heal your land i will i will i will blessed is the nation whose god is the lord i pray that we would do these 10 things for your glory
