a man will take your Bibles and turn to the book of Proverbs I hope you're feeling wiser every week amen don't you just feel smart when you read proverbs feel wise because you're getting God's wisdom and God's wisdom will help you work it out today just a cursory just a normal reading of the Bible you'll figure out pretty soon that God is a God of love God loves us does he not I mean that's that's pretty much the essence of Christianity what Jesus was asked what's the greatest commandment of all we read about that in mark chapter 12 it says one of the scribes that's the Jewish scribes came and heard them arguing that they were always arguing with Jesus and recognizing that Jesus had answered them well he asked him what commandment is the foremost of all jesus answered just like that the foremost is hero is thrilled the LORD thy God is one Lord and you shall love him the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul with all your mind with all your strength and the second commandment is just like it you shall love your neighbor as yourself there is no other commandment greater than these love God love people say that with me love God love people now where have I heard that all yes our mission statement love God love people share Jesus make disciples at Bellevue we want to love God we want to do that by worshiping God intimately by taking in Scripture regularly by praying fervently like it matters and then by obeying God instantly and then we want to love people we want our family relationships to be growing we want to be involved in a life group we want to give compassionate care to others at Bellevue and then we want to serve selflessly outside of Bellevue that's the way we try to love God and love people around here the Bible is filled with Scripture about loving God Jeremiah the weeping prophet of the Old Testament Jesus quoted Jeremiah more than any other prophet he quoted this passionate man who never married he was married really to the Lord and to the people of God and Jeremiah said to them God is speaking through Jeremiah he said to them I have loved you with an ever lasting love therefore I've drawn you to myself with loving-kindness greatest verse in all the Bible you know what it is John 3:16 let's read it off the scream together for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life you'll notice I went to King James on that alright and there's some verses you just got to go kgv alright and one of them is John 3:16 and then Jesus said in John 13:34 and 35 a new commandment I give to you that you love one another even as I have loved you that you also love one another by this by love all men will know that you're my disciples if you have love for one another the way this world is going to know whether or not we really love God if we really love one another that's how they will know this all men will know that you're my disciples jesus said in John 15:13 the night before he died greater love has no one than one laid down his life for his friends and the next day he would lay down his life for the people of God Paul wrote in Romans 5:8 the greatest doctrinal statement in all of the Bible is the book of Romans and right in the middle of it in chapter 5 verse 8 he said but God demonstrates his own love he doesn't just talk about love he shows his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners while you were at your worst Christ died for you God loves you he cares for you and the Bible says at the end of the one of the greatest text in the whole New Testament Romans chapter 8 says in verses 38 and 39 I'm convinced Paul says that neither death nor life angels principalities those are spiritual beings things present things to come nor powers nor height depth or any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord it doesn't matter who's in the White House it doesn't matter who's in the State House it doesn't matter who's in the courthouse in this regard it does matter but it doesn't matter when it comes to God loving you nothing can separate you from the love of God nothing didn't bite the Bible says in first John four seven eight beloved let us love one another for love is from God and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God the one who does not love does not know God for god is love I could go on and on but I think you get the picture God is a God of love Christianity is based on love but the same Bible that talks about the love of God says there are some things that God hates and consequently we ought to hate them too now I can hear some of you thinking preacher what are you talking about God is love God is love yes God is love but the same Bible that give so much emphasis on love also stresses the legitimacy at times for hate there are some things that we ought to hate there's something God loves and some things God hates likewise there's some things that we should love and there's some things that you and I should hate now again I can hear you thinking out there brother Steve we're not supposed to hate we're supposed to love everybody all the time love everything really who says not the Bible Bible doesn't say that Bible doesn't say you're supposed to love everything that happens we're to love all people but we're not to love everything they do you might be thinking I can't believe this but scripture says that Bible says there's a time to hate I just read Ecclesiastes just yesterday morning read the whole book now don't be too impressed there's only 12 chapters but in Ecclesiastes chapter 3 there is a appointed time for everything there's a time for every event under heaven a time to love and a time to what say it out loud hey many of God's greatest Saints through the ages have hated certain things and they have done so with the blessing of the Lord upon them King Solomon taught in Proverbs 8 verse 13 the fear that is the reference of the Lord is to hate evil pride in arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth I hate prophet Amos just a country boy from Tekoa a fig picker is what he said he was amos 5:15 said hate evil and love good established justice in the gate that's where they did all the judiciary worked there was at the gate he said there needs to be justice at the gate so hate evil love good perhaps the Lord God of hosts may be gracious to the remnant of Joseph and then jesus said to the church of ephesus in revelation 2 verse 6 but this is in your favor you hate the evil deeds of the Nicolaitans just as I do you don't hate the Nicolaitans but you hate their evil deeds listen to me folks God loves everybody Jesus died for everybody anybody can go to heaven when we don't believe that we lose the gospel but don't you think for a skinny minute that God loves sin God hates sin God loves righteousness God doesn't hate sinners praise the Lord how many be glad God doesn't hate sinners but he hates our sin and you know what it's okay for us to hate our sin too if you enjoy doing wrong you may not be saved one of the reasons I know that I'm saved is when I mess up I have to fess up amen I mean I just have to confess I got to repent I can't live in that I wasn't born again for that I was born again to walk with God now on Sunday mornings we're looking at proverbs back on February the 10th we looked at proverbs 3:5 and 6 trust in the Lord on February the 17th we looked at the discipline of the Lord on mark the third we looked at living purposefully in perilous times Romans our proverbs four and then last week we looked at the anthill our two weeks ago I had one guy say brother Steve I've never heard anybody preach on an anthill I guess if you can preach about an ant you can preach about anything amen well you know what we can learn a lot from that little ant can't we about how to work we talked about that proverbs 6 well today we're going to look at what God hates look there with me in proverbs chapter 6 verse 16 there are six things which the Lord hates yes seven which are an abomination to him and here they come haughty eyes a lying tongue and hands the shed innocent blood a heart that devises wicked plans feet that run rapidly to evil a false witness who utters lies and one who spreads strife among brothers well that's a that's an outline any preacher can preach right there let's go through it let's let God speak to us alright how many of you want God to speak to you this morning anybody and look don't don't be afraid I'm not gonna beat you up the Word of God it's not gonna beat you up but it is going to tell you about the side of God that is God is holy alright he's holy but stay with me to the end this thing is gonna end really good okay okay everybody likes a good ending all right that it's gonna be better than a hallmark movie all right I'm telling you this is gonna end well at the end all right you know I never get I watched those things all the time and I never get upset no matter what the tragedy I know it's going to end right amen number one God hates a proud look verse sixteen and seventeen there are six things which the Lord hates yes seven which are an abomination to him haughty eyes God hates a proud look he hates haughty eyes eyes of pride eyes of arrogance conceit vanity insolence a person who is uppity or pompous or condescending are snobbish folks all of that is the exact opposite of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ never was haughty Jesus was humble a servant of both God and of man he was never cocky Jesus never walked with a swagger Jesus never displayed a proud arrogant look when I think of arrogance I go back to the Old Testament figure of Pharaoh when Moses went to him after Moses had talked with the Lord and the Lord had talked to him and called him to be the deliverer for the people of Israel to get them out of the promised land out of the the bondage land of bondage in Egypt to go to the promised land he goes and he he's a shepherd he's 80 years old and he goes in and he stands before the most powerful man in the world and says God says let his people go we read about it in Exodus 5 and afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh thus says the Lord the God of Israel let my people go he's not asking he's telling and this man wasn't used to being talked to like this let my people go that they may celebrate a feast to me in the wilderness but Pharaoh said who is the Lord that I should obey his voice to let Israel go I don't know the Lord and besides I will not let Israel go oh oh this guy just sealed his own fate he just messed with God you don't disobey God without reaping the harvest you don't act arrogantly toward the Lord I hit my pad so many times we went to the end of my sermon Amen all right I got I get back up here where am i okay where they row where are you there brother come on to me talk to me where are you Pharaoh ah there you are all right Pharaoh arrogantly feared neither God nor men note to self don't Pat your iPad while your all right he dug in his heels you know the story and god-sent how many plagues ten and the last one God took the firstborn son of every house in Egypt the Bible says there was not a house in Egypt where somebody was not crying and just overwhelmed with grief and they didn't just let the people go they forced them out they they gave them riches and said just get out of here we can't handle the fear the the God who is before us we fear this god of yours I want to ask you do you ever display a proud haughty look if you're white do you ever look down condescendingly on blacks or Latinos or Asians or Arabs and if you're black do you ever look down on whites Latinos Asians or Arabs and if you're Latino do you ever look down on whites blacks Asians and Arabs and if you're an Asian do you ever look down on whites blacks Latinos and Arabs and if you're Arabic do you ever look down on whites blacks Latinos and Asian you see anybody can be haughty anybody can be guilty of prejudice don't think that's just one group's problem okay that in and of itself has enough haughtiness in it to make you think otherwise if you're rich do you look down on poor people if you're poor do you look down on rich people if you're a Democrat do you look down on Republicans if you're a Republican do you look down on Democrats do you have hearty eyes I can remember our kids were teenagers and once in a while when they didn't see me watching they rolled their eyes at me now gonna have that that's what I'm talking about sometimes we roll our eyes toward God you know Jesus brothers and sisters wants us to live not in haughtiness but in humility here's a great way to stay humble where would you be without Jesus where would you be without the Lord when I start thinking about that I get off of my high horse real quick don't you and I just get down real low and say Lord if it wasn't for you I'd be in a big mess might not even be alive oh Jesus let me just stay humble enough and small enough for you to use me God I know that you hate a haughty look a haughty proud look number two God hates a lying tongue now just just look before I even say that everybody in here is told a lie at some time in your life and if you say you didn't you just did now you join the club there are six things which the Lord hates yes seven which are an abomination him a lying tongue God hates a tongue that doesn't tell the truth because God is a God of truth he loves truth he hates lies Solomon went on to say in Proverbs to warn people against lying he said in Proverbs 1219 truthful lips will be established forever but a lying tongue is only for a moment proverbs 1425 a truthful witness saves lives but one who breathes out lies is deceitful proverbs 19 five-o what false witness will not go unpunished and he who tells lies will not escape proverbs 30 verses 7 and 8 oh god I beg to favours from you let me have them before I die first help me never to tell a lie second give me neither poverty nor riches give me just enough to satisfy my needs God hates a lying tongue do you remember Jacob Jacob the deceiver do you remember Jacob the guy who had a brother named isaw do you remember Jacob who had a mother named Rebecca and a father named Isaac his father couldn't see very well Jacob was not the firstborn of twins he was the second child born of twins and Esau was going to get this big inheritance and he wanted it and his mother wanted him to have it can you imagine a mother loving one child more than another but anyway she did she loved Jacob more than she loved her firstborn of esau and the bible says that she put this plan in his heart and he willingly receptive received it how to steal away the blessing of birthright from his brother so he goes in his dad can't see and you can read about this in the book of Genesis his dad could say Genesis 27 his dad couldn't see real well and so he starts talking and he said I've come to give you the wild game that you want and your savory meal he said well how did you get it so quick you just left me so God was with me now you know what he's drugged God in on his lie that's not a good idea is it alright and so and so he he's sitting there talking to his daddy and he wins him over his dad gives him the blessing he goes out Esau comes in and finds out he's been betrayed and his brother has done him wrong and he gets so mad he's ready to kill him long story short Jacob has to leave the the town the area and he goes to his uncle Laban 's house and guess what there's always a bigger deceiver than you all right there's always a bigger sinner than you and God can use somebody that is really unrighteous to wear you out amen and for 20 years-old Laban gave him a piece of his own pie I'm telling you every day he woke up he and labor'd had changed the rules every day I mean he changed his his amount of payment he changed everything I don't know how in the world he snuck in one daughter that wasn't that good-looking when he when Jacob was trying to marry the pretty one I don't understand that all I gotta say is that was one dark tent Amen but anyway I'm telling you I'm telling you the Bible the Bible says this guy he pulled the wool over and for 20 years 20 years Jacob was being deceived by this master of deception and finally he gets out and you know the story I've told it recently even I know that all of you come on Sunday night you hear all those things but anyway I I told it recently he'll Sunday night about Jacob wrestling with the angel of God at penny L and he said I will not let you go until you bless me and that's when God broke him how many of you know that we need to be broken anybody know that God has to break you so he can bridle you so he can bless you and God broke him and blessed him and he came away from penny l a changed man in fact he had a changed name his name was changed from jacob deceiver to israel you ever heard that name it's real and he's walking with the limp and the bible says he died with the limp it says in Hebrews 11 in the Hall of faith it says Jacob died leaning on his staff he limped for the rest of his life but every time he took a limp it was a reminder I need God I need God I need got how many of you would be glad to have a limp just like that amen God may have to break you to bless you but look at me God does not want a lying tongue God won't put up with a lying tongue the Bible says in Zechariah 8 verse 16 there there are the things these are the things which you should do speak the truth to one another judge with truth and judgment for peace in your gates the Bible says in Ephesians 4:15 speaking the truth in love we're to grow up in all aspects into him who's the head even Christ God the Father is the god of truth Jesus is the way the truth and the life the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth and as followers we need to be people of truth God hates a lying tongue number three God hates a murderous hand a murderer is saying look at verse 16 there are six things which the Lord hates yes seven which are an abomination to him hands that shed innocent blood notice Solomon qualified his statement he didn't say the Lord hates hands that shed blood he the Lord hates hands that shed innocent blood God expects some people to be killed you don't have to Amen that it's in the Bible Bible says in Genesis 9 verse 6 whoever sheds man's blood by man his blood shall be shed for in the image of God he made him I believe capital punishment is a deterrent for people shedding innocent blood Bible says in Leviticus 24 verse 17 if a man takes the life of any human being he shall surely be put to death the Bible says in Deuteronomy 19 verses 11 through 13 but if there is a man who hates his neighbor lies in wait for him and rises up against him and strikes him so that he dies and he pleads to one of these cities talking about a City of Refuge then the elders of his City shall send him and sin shall sin and take him from there he can't hide and deliver him into the hand of the Avenger of the blood that he may die you shall not pity that man you shall not you shall purge the blood of the innocent from Israel that it may go well with you purge the land the blood of the innocent from the land of Israel and then the Bible says specifically when they sacrificed their children to the false gods of Molech and Bale the psalmist said in Psalm 106 38 and they shed innocent blood the blood of their sons and their daughters whom they sacrifice to the idols of Canaan and the land was polluted with the innocent blood when you shed innocent blood it pollutes the land do you think maybe there's some pollution in America in the 1970s and night and nineteen said in the 1700s and the 1800s we polluted this land with the blood of slaves in the 1800s we massacred Indians and we polluted this land with their innocent blood and now for the past 45 years we have shed the innocent blood of unborn baby via abortion mm plus babies a day America is polluted but not the way the environmental people talk about America is polluted spiritually and the only thing that's going to handle it is us repenting of our sins and our Father sins we've got to ask God to please take away our sins God hates hands that shed innocent blood he will not let the guilty go unpunished number four God hates a scheming heart look at verse 16 and 18 there are six things which the Lord hates 7 which are an abomination to him a heart that devises wicked plans a scheming undermining devious heart somebody that forms a deadly diabolical plan they can't sleep without thinking of ways to hurt other people Jesus had enemies like that the Jewish religious leaders at the time it's almost like they lived to persecute Jesus the Bible says in Luke 11 53 and 54 when Jesus left there the scribes and the Pharisees these are Jesus enemies here they began to be very hostile and to question him closely on many subjects plotting there it is plotting against him to catch him in something he might say think about in the 1930s and the 1940s how Hitler plotted with a scheming heart to wipe out all the Jews in Europe and in just 13 years through his deadly plots and their the brutal tactics that he had he exterminated and that's the word he used he exterminated six million Jews one and a half million of whom were just small children can you even fathom that God says I hate that I hate that you might say but pastor I wouldn't I would never kill anybody would you kill their reputation through gossip even if you're right you have no right to slander people you have no right to hate anyone you can hate their sin but you never need to hate the sinner don't have a scheming heart that works hard to put somebody else down number five God hates a wayward foot oh my I keep hearing a little song I learned when I was a kid be careful little feet where you go look at verse 16 and 18 there are six thing which the Lord hates yes seven which are an abomination to him feet that run rapidly to evil Solomon warned God's people to walk away from sin not to run to it I can remember when I was working on a construction crew we were building a highway over Dyersburg when I was in college and have some hard work hot and I can remember on pay day Friday we all got our checks and I saw grown men running they were hot they were tired I saw grown men running to their cars so they could go to a bar and get drunk all weekend and do things they shouldn't do a wayward foot I talked a few weeks ago about this when I talked out of proverbs 4 the Bible says let your eyes look directly ahead let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established you know what if you won't put your feet in a bad place you won't be in a bad place now that's just pretty good is it not keep your feet out of a bad place don't turn to the right don't turn to the left turn your foot from evil the ultimate bit illustration of this is found in proverbs chapter 5 my son be attentive to my wisdom incline your ear to my understanding that you may keep discretion and your lips may guard knowledge for the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey her speech is smoother than oil in the end she is bitter as wormwood sharp as a two-edged sword her feet go down to death her steps follow the paths of she oh that's the place of the dead she does not ponder the path of life her ways wander she does not know it and now o sons listen to me don't depart from the words of my mouth keep your way that is keep your feet far from her don't go near to the door of her house lest you give your honor to others in your years to the Merciless less strangers take their fill of your strength and your Labor's go to the house of a foreigner walk in purity don't walk in impurity don't walk in sin walk in the spirit no wonder the Book of Psalms the hymnal of the Jews opens with this blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked nor stands in the way of sinners nor sits in the seat of scoffers but his delight is in the law of the Lord and on his law does he meditate day and night I pray this verse all the time Isaiah 30 verse 21 your ears will hear a word behind you saying this is the way walk in it whenever you turn to the right or to the left don't you want the Holy Ghost to guide you don't you want the Spirit of God to guide you don't you want to be led by the spirit don't you want God saying don't go right now go left don't go left now go right keep your eyes in front of you and let me speak to you I will guide you the Bible says in Romans 8 for don't walk according to the flesh walk according to the spirit oh be careful little feet where you go I heard somebody say a long time if you don't want to fall down don't walk on ice don't walk on slippery places the Lord hates feet that run rapidly to evil God hates the wayward foot number six God hates an accusing tongue now this is different than point to a lying tongue that was a general condemnation for lie this is more specific than that look at verse 19 there verse 19 says there are six things which the Lord hates yes seven which are an abomination him a false witness who utters lies this is a person who falsely accuses someone an innocent person and that results in that person who didn't do anything wrong being treated unfairly as if he or she were guilty of a crime immediately we think about paydays some day we think about nebith and his vineyard when king ahab wanted that vineyard and this spoiled brat king had everything and he this one this little poor man's vineyard that's all this man had and he went over said I want your vineyard I'll trade you for it he said man this thing belonged to my family I'm not with all due respect King I'm not giving it to anybody and he and so Ahab goes back and and he's all sulky and everything and his wicked wife Jezebel says what's wrong with you well what's the matter with you and he said no both won't give me his vineyard and I do that sport and he won't give it to me a ho ho that's in the Hebrew that's the way it worked rezoning the Bible says Jezebel his wife said to him don't you reign over this thrill arise eat bread and let your heart be joyful I'll give you the vineyard of naboth the jezreelite so she wrote letters in Ahab's name she sealed them with his seal she sent letters to the elders and the nobles who were living with namath in his City now she wrote in the letter saying proclaim a fast and seaton they bought that the head of the table and set two worthless men sons of Belial is the Hebrew they're two worthless men before him and let them testify against him that is lie against him saying you're you cursed God and the king and then take him out and stone him to death so the men of the city the elders and the nobles who lived in the city did as Jezebel had sent word to them as it was written in the letters which she had sent them and they killed him and the Bible goes on to say they killed his wife and they killed his children as well and Elijah showed up and said because you did that the dogs they have are gonna lick your blood out of your chariot in the field and the vineyard of that godly man that you had killed you're gonna reap what you sow and you're gonna do it in God's time and Jezebel will be killed as well and dogs will eat her look at me you don't mess with God you don't mess with God's people Jezebel this accusing tongue you're never more like the devil when you accuse godly people you're never more like the devil when you accuse people he is the accuser of the Brethren revelation 12:10 don't be like the devil the Lord hates an accusing tongue and the last thing we read about is this God hates a divisive troublemaker you know there's some people that wake up and brush their teeth and sharpen their tongue it's almost like they wake up and here's how they wake up look look well here we go good morning they just like to fight some folks are just full of meanness troublemakers verse 16 and 19 there are six things which the Lord hates yes seven which are an abomination to him one who spreads strife among brothers God is a God of unity not a God of division the Bible says in Psalm 133 verse 1 behold how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity how many of you like it when the church is dwelling in unity how many of you like that Amen how many of you don't like it when it's not dwelling in unity Amen it's there's there's nothing better than a church together there's nothing probably worse than a Church that's divided same thing with marriage when it's good it's good and when it's bad it's bad amen don't look down come on you don't look at me so holy all right don't don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about when there's unity between husband and wife it's awesome and when there's division wow that's hard Bible says in Ephesians 4:3 Paul said being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace Satan is the great divider God is the great unifier and as you look across our culture right now would you say it's united or divided sellout it's divided who did that the devil and I want to say this to you don't think for a minute that Satanists Wiccans warlocks all these people don't think that they're not prey they're preying many times more than God's people are and they're praying to the devil and the devil somehow to understand all that but somehow the devil thrives on that and I'm telling you the devil is wreaking havoc in our culture right now because God's people are not praying we're not witnessing we're not fasting we're just going along just waiting on something good to happen look at me something good will happen this is not works theology but something good will happen when you start obeying God and you start praying if my people called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then I will hear from heaven will forgive their sin and will heal their land the reason we've got division is because people like us are not praying and seeking God and repenting of our own sin look at me the world the world is out there and they're looking for somebody to stand up and give some direction that's the that's the job of the church we are to be the conscience of the nation we are to be salt and light and we are to pray and seek God as though God politics can't fix us money can't fix us business can't fix us only you can repair this land Oh God may we and then may the culture since the difference amen amen God hates divisive troublemakers spreading strife among brothers it's not a sin to hate sin it is not a sin to hate sin it's a sin to hate any sinner but it is not a sin to hate sin that's why it's not a sin for God to hate a proud look a lying tongue a murderous hand a scheming heart a wayward foot an accusing tongue and a divisive troublemaker and I want to tell you how much God hated it God hated your sin and my sin so much that he allowed his spotless sinless son Jesus Christ to be born of a virgin with no sinful nature to come to this earth in the body of a human being to be tempted as we are but he never gave in to temptation and to send him as a sacrifice for your sin and for my sin to send him to a cross to die the death that you and I deserved allowed his son to be buried and the son of God to be buried for three days to go down to get the keys of hell death and the grave but on that third day which is what we'll celebrate on Eastern we celebrated every Sunday Jesus rose from the grave and now he can forgive any sin you've committed he can forgive any of these seven sins he can forgive any sin you've got in your life he can make your pass just that the past old things can pass away new things will come he will make you a brand new creation not just fix you up he won't just give you a little shine he will literally give you a heart transplant and give you a new life and you'll never be the same God hated sin so much that Jesus became sin so that we could become the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ I thank God that he hates sin but he loves sinners like you and me amen amen father we thank you for the word of God we thank you so much that you do hate sin you are holy but you love sinners you are gracious hallelujah or you're our only hope help us to hate love what you love and hate what you hate if that's your prayer in Jesus name say Amen
