hi everyone I'm Jamie from that's a Wimpy teacher and today's video is all about practicing classroom routines and procedures at the beginning of the school year the most important thing that I can tell you and hopefully no matter what you get out of this video that this part you remember as that time spent teaching and practicing classroom routines and procedures is not time wasted and in fact taking it slow and really making sure that your students understand your expectations will save you so much time on here that you must do it I know that some of our schools asked us to jump into curriculum really quickly mugdha - but it doesn't mean that we have to rush our routines and procedures squeeze them in anywhere you can I know I used to get really nervous because it seemed like I was spending the most time on these what other teachers seem to have been moving on and their students were doing so ready but I came to realize that because I spent so much time at the beginning of the year on these routines and procedures that I had an easier yeah I didn't have to go back to it repeatedly I wasn't spending time lecturing them all year about a procedure my class seemed to run like a well-oiled machine it took lots of work at the beginning of the year but I think I'd rather spend that time at the beginning of the year and get it right then to spend the whole year wasting time and energy and getting frustrated so as you're thinking about back-to-school and planning for back-to-school one more time than you think you will need I think you will really be happy that you did now I want to tell you what my first day as a teacher was like was pretty awful I really think that one for these kids I loved them by should not know what I was doing and so on the very first day of school I had written a syllabus it was several pages long front and back 12-point front and I spent the first a couple of days reading it to them and telling them everything there was to know about these different procedures they sat in their desks and watched me until they fell asleep because it was so boring I was lecturing eight-year-olds almost at school I doubt any of them went home and told their parents that they were excited to come back and that is not acceptable I really want my students to go home excited to come back the next day let me tell you that didn't do it so don't do what I did don't just sit there and lecture them you know a long PowerPoint or a long syllabus do what you can to get students up and moving talking sharing you will find that they remember these procedures better and you're gonna get a lot more buy-in from them well sir just gonna have fun and that makes it a community building exercise as well and that is super important so I'm gonna share with you four of my favorite activities for practice indoors the procedures that I teach in the classroom hopefully where are two of them spark your interest and give you an idea the first one is modeling what not to do if you watched minutes and her videos we're my reading or my writing workshop videos then you've heard me talk about this activity before it comes straight from the daily five book I did not use daily 5 in my classroom but I loved the wind taught read to self and I used this procedure this like activity whenever I wanted to practice a new routine in my classroom so comes in real many at the beginning of the year okay not only what not to do try and picture it and now the whole house on the carpet you know the kids at the front row are playing with my toes often why they do that but they do and I have just gone through with them the procedures and routines for how to check out it looks from the classroom library I've told them how that was organized and and what mine rules are for borrowing books and where they keep the books and how they check out books if you have a checkout procedure and so now we've gone through all the rules quickly cuz I don't want moorim and then we're going to look around for that Cadell you're not looking for someone to pick on but you're looking around for that canto that likes the extra attention needs the exertion because they want to do this you don't wanna pick your introvert who shines thing in the back you desperately hoping you won't call on them don't don't call on them you're looking for the kid who's like okay back you know who actually might be the one all year who struggles with some of your routines and procedures because they're trying so hard to get your attention sometimes it's easier to get negative attention than positive attention unfortunately so you're gonna look for that kiddo and when you find them you'll know exactly who they are because they'll be excited you're gonna say I just told the whole class exactly the routines and procedures checking out classroom library books but what I want you to do what not to do when checking out books from my classroom library I want you to break all the rules and show on what it would be like if they went to break all the rules oh my gosh we picked the right kid they're super excited right now it's like they've won the lottery and the rest of the class is giggling - but they're like to break the rules that's unusual right you ready stand out and this kid is gonna go along and he's gonna model for the class he's gonna maybe take the longest wave of the classroom that he's gonna talk and he's gonna take books out of baskets and put them in the wrong baskets and he's not gonna use your checkout procedure and whatever other rules that you've given he's gonna break them all right I'm a classic giggling and the more they giggle more he gets into its the more rolls he breaks you can go ahead and say okay okay thank you don't you come back over here and that's that class what moves did he break what was the things you notice that he did what I'm supposed to do because a little list on the board or on an Inca chariot then it's important you go back to that same student seems to say now you've shown us exactly what not to do and you were amazing at that lots of positive reinforcement now I want you to show the whole class what they should be doing how would you follow all those and be perfect student when checking out like okay so now you can't mistake again twice oh this is huge because he loves having the stage he's gonna go back and he's gonna model at the correct way and then you can pull the students together and talk about the things that he did it correctly if there were some things that he didn't quite get you couldn't talk about them it has a class not to pick on him but rather like oh yeah let's let forget that one he's had the best time ever but you don't look right at him and say thank you so much you were amazing and now I know that you can follow our classroom rules for checking out books in the classroom library he has no excuse you know he can do it so the rest of the year he's going to have to do it he's already proven he can't that's big because he's quite possibly was one of the students that was going to struggle with the procedure and so he's already model for you that he can do it perfectly the rest of your class has also had a great time and enjoyed watching if you have extra time you have another student do it or you can live on and then just use the same activity with a different procedure later the great thing about this is that it just takes a few minutes so you know it's really hard to plan the first couple weeks of school you've no idea how long your students are gonna take to do certain things so it's nice to have this activity in your back pocket that you can pull out any time you like oh you just have ten extra minutes hmm what should we do pull this one out you don't need to print anything copy anything a prep anything just pull the kids to the floor and say hey remember how earlier we talked about how we were gonna get ready for lunch I'm gonna go and practice that and plot this activity usually can fill that ten minutes without you having to prep anything more so that's fantastic your students will really enjoy it and everyone's gonna want to volunteer it so you're stupid sure I guess and that's okay that's okay they're probably not the ones that are gonna struggle with the procedure so model what not to do super fun activity your kids are going to enjoy it and they will go home telling stories to their parents about all the funny things that they know or their classmates did another finding tivity that would like to do after I've taught a lot of our basic classroom procedures that's all nuts if I find someone who and maybe you've done this activity in your classroom before I use it for a variety of different things but it's neat because you get all your students up out of their seats moving and talking to their classmates about in this case classroom procedures so what they do each student will meet one of these papers and maybe a clipboard or something that they can write on and they're going to go around the classroom and they're gonna try to find a different classmate so this won't have nine bucks it's only differing nine different classmates the same person can't sign every box but they're differing nine different classmates you can answer the question in the box once the classmate answers the question they sign up so they're gonna come up to someone and say hey can you explain or can you can show you where to turn over can you show me where we turn in our work and so the student will take over go up here's where you turn in your math work and huge region here reading work whatever and then they'll sign the box for the student now the student lead if I did different student answer the other questions the great thing about this activity is that they are teaching because they are going to be asked by their classmates to explain procedures and they're having to listen to their classmates teach so they're hearing they're speaking they're moving it increases their memory that is pretty fun meeting new friends in the classroom easy to prep photocopy one sheet of paper have ready to go okay fun and this here is a freebie and the link is in the video description for you to grab any of the principles that are showing you today for free all right another thing I like to do once I chop a basic classroom procedures and I want to make sure what happening and reviewing part but I think teachers skip they teach it then they don't practice it and review it for very long well I like to use for days and the really great thing about this in exact inity with board games is that I also have a board game Center in my Mac Center routine it's our my math fact Center includes board games so if you've watched that video on my youtube channel then you know that I use this exact type of game in my math centers so as I am teaching students this activity we are reviewing our classroom procedures we are learning how to work together in groups we are practicing my game procedures or to get the games how to treat the game top of the games away how to play fairly and we're preparing ourselves to be successful at math centers so it may look like you're not you know oh man she's still working on classroom procedures no tell them I couldn't actually getting them ready from other centers okay it's sneaky but you really ought to teach them a lot of things all at once was it fun to play games you're gonna want to collect some simple board games and I really think every classroom needs some of these I use them in my math Center so I really there I love them you can get pretty inexpensive at stores like Walmart but also look at thrift stores garage sales and personal Facebook I'll say hey I could use some board games like Candyland chutes and ladders checkers Kinect for from a classroom do your children have any that they've grown out of most families have this like dreaded closet of stuff and like how like a chameleon game that kids haven't played in a few years that they'd be willing to give to you even if it's missing a piece or something you can usually modify it and make it work okay so close the board games have them on hand because you can use them all year Ameritrade I've given you some game cards and how this works is that the students will be in small groups somewhere between two to four students probably but whatever works in your classroom they'll take turns when it's their turn they'll take a card at the top of the pile and they need to answer the question in order to earn their turn playing on the work so this one is what should you do if you need to next arrest your break so it was my turn I would answer the question and if I get it right and the class mates them playing with agree with me then I get a turn on the board game so we're playing Candyland then I choose one of the color cards and I move my keys up to that color post playing checkers I would get to move my money check our keys I'm earning my board game turn with this question and then the board game is played with the same rules but it always is since you've picked simple board games your kids probably already know how to play board games that's that's nice okay and then you would go to the next student and they would go to card what do you do if you finish something early and they would explain the answer are you practicing those procedures this is awesome for if you have some beginning of your assessments you're needing to pull individual student to do sight words or phonograms or whatever it is you want you required to do at the beginning of the year this works out great because you've got the whole class busy and then you come kind of pull a student at me anything that's a turn or two but it's better than having to come up with some elaborate plans and try to keep your brand-new students busy at the beginning of the year that can be challenging so this is fun but even if you're not doing that you're just walking around you're able to hear the answers these questions you're able to see which questions our students are struggling with you're able to see which students struggle with playing games fairly who might need whether or not your Colfax needs to review procedures for playing games together before you start math centers it gives you a really good idea of where they're at okay so this is fun I've got cards for you you can take out the ones that maybe don't apply to you and add additional if you need to again I left a link in the video description to grab any of these freebies that I'm sharing today okay another activity that I like to do after I've taught the basic classroom procedures is students do the teaching again you're gonna break your cost up into small groups I like somewhere between two and four more than four and I don't feel like everyone participates as much so I like Dicky bow a little bit smaller so everyone's participating and you're gonna give each group a different classroom routine or procedure so maybe this group over here has restroom breaks and this kid over here has this group over here has a lunchtime and this group over here has recess procedures maybe this group over here has emergency procedures like fire drills everyone's given their individual procedure that they are responsible for teaching the rest of the class about and if you have technology this could be a great opportunity to practice technology maybe they by allowing one to make a video or slideshow so we good time to teach them how to do that on the technology uh if you don't technology which I do not give them a piece of butcher paper and have to make a poster to the class with all of the different procedures routines and stuff draw pictures give them markers and crayons and let them go crazy having the opportunity to bond with their teammates as well as discussing procedures in your classroom and then they'll present them to the rest of the class when you teach something you always remember it okay and as the class is learning from the their classmates it could be a little tough a little too much sitting so maybe in between each presentation have them get up and do jumping jacks or yo good stretch or walk around the room once and then sit in their chair walk around the room and sit in a different chair play a song and have them dance just to keep the energy high because then they'll be more engaged in each of the presentations just really fun so those are were my favourite activities the model what not to do find someone who bored games and the students teach I did make a little sheet here with some common procedures that you'll want to make sure you teach in your classroom and you may need to add summer takes in my way because our classrooms are all so different but I just tried to include Wednesday I felt we're pretty common like class rules lining up and walk in the hallway cause from library absent work lunch snack procedures playground behavior passing out collecting papers this is a freebie the link is in the video description I kindly recommend printing it you can during the summer and just making sure you know what your classroom procedure is if you haven't really thought about what you want it to look like in your classroom for each of these procedures now's the time to sort of figure that out so that you're really ready to model and explain it to your students okay so a list of procedures to teach the find someone who the game cards they're off free on my blog there's a link it'll take you to the blog post where I have it described these activities again for you in case you need notes and there's the freebie at the very bottom of the post so you can grab I hope this has been helpful I hope you're ready to spend some quality time practicing those procedures and routines in your classroom and that it helps you to have a great beginning of the school year I'll talk to you again soon bye
