I am thankful to have grown up understanding that who you are off the stage is far more important than who you are on the stage that gifts ultimately Crush people if the character can't sustain the weight of the gift and so that has been a learning process over time for me but just being 12 years old and knowing there is a purpose in my life there is a call on my life but I have to continue to keep Jesus at the center origin story where do you wanna where do you want to start well let me first say I'm just blown away by you all how kind you are how open-handed that you've been with me and my family and including me in so many things I'm grateful for you and to see where it started and to know that your parents were so instrumental in carrying it a certain distance but how you have picked it up and grown this into the impactful ministry that is today is truly inspiring for me so thank you for letting me be a part you know the beautiful thing about how God works is he always gets his man so I think for me that there was a plan and a purpose for me long before I was aware of it even before my parents were aware of it I've been saying this a lot recently and I plan on saying it for the rest of my life that Jesus saved my soul but he used the church to save my life there you go when I was nine years old I realized that my life was going to change forever because my dad came home and told me Ren we're going to church tomorrow I said dad I have plans tomorrow I want to play street hockey with my friends I've got things to do he said well we're gonna go to the mall I'm gonna get you a new blazer some new dress shoes I said dad say less because your boy like an outfit okay some people buy clothes I buy outfits and we coordinated this today so we went we went and picked up a navy blue blazer with gold buttons and got my khakis had them creased up and we went to church that Sunday morning and we walked into the back of a small Pentecostal Church in Battle Creek Michigan my goodness and something happened in my heart immediately now my dad and I were the only two people of color in the room that day but my dad didn't seem to mind so I didn't mind either and coming to find out actually years later one of the Elders of the church told my dad that he was the first black man that he had ever hugged and so I got to see my dad live out what it meant to be a new believer actually opening his life respecting others being kind and watching relationships grow over time beautiful but that Sunday morning I heard the choir singing and it was a wrap for me I was like I want to be a part of this so that summer I went to church camp for the first time now the the viewers out there may not understand this because Church camp has gotten bougie okay I mean you can go to church camp now my son just went to church camp he's having Frappuccinos there's gold cards mani pedis after prayer I'm like what are we doing when I was growing up Church camp was basketball sweat and altar calls yeah so I went into an altar call at nine years old and God filled me with this Spirit it was the most life-changing experience and that same week I was asked to sing a solo for the camp choir so this was the first time that I felt my soul aligned with a gift in service of The Giver for the ministry of the church my goodness and when I went back home I realized I want to give my life to this and of course you know we've had ups and downs and bumps and bruises along the way but I can sit here today 27 years later and say I still love the church what I didn't realize at the time was my dad before I was born had already been through so much she lost his first son which would have been my older brother um he lost his sister and his father in a span of two years and he was trying to make it work with my mom they ended up separating getting divorced and that moment for him as a father knowing the imperfection the difficulty the dysfunction that he had lived through to make the choice to say we're changing this for the Next Generation changed the entire trajectory of my life the natural progression to feel that sense of purpose Destiny driven through something most people then look up and go hey I'm ready for the stage Lord you know I mean Bring It On not if you have my pastor's wife because as soon as you think you're ready for the stage you're gonna sit down because there are a few times when little 11 12 13 voice changing tauren was feeling like oh I can sing and I'm singing at my school talent shows and the girls like singers and all of that and I would you know coming to church trying to do my little thing and you know I grew up in the type of church that I just call you out you know it was not well you know we need to nurture them into the right direction it was like no you're a little arrogant you're gonna have to sit down um and also you need to put on your tie and you need to tuck in your shirt it was just very very clear and so I am thankful to have grown up understanding that who you are off the stage is far more important than who you are on the stage that gifts ultimately Crush people if the character can't sustain the weight of the gift and so that has been a learning process over time for me but just being 12 years old and knowing there is a purpose on my life there is a call on my life but I have to continue to keep Jesus at the center and you know I was not a great singer at 12. we could go back and listen to it it's not good but there were people around me through the church that God allowed me to develop not just in a skill set but in a heart posture I like to hug that woman yeah right yeah because I think I I think and I know I've because I've had it said to us it turned into a business for us and people's lives are just ruined they've been on major platforms around the world and off the stage their lives are in shambles and crumbled because it turned into a business and when I see you and when I'm around you and your beautiful wife and your children and all the things that come out of your mouth tauren is such a foundation oh my gosh the foundation of who you are where you've come from and it was those that you sit down for a minute you've been you've you know time out yeah exactly right and and I love that and I think we need that so much more in the church so I'm sitting with Jason Crabb the other day doing an interview and he called himself a 30-year overnight sensation yeah and you know yeah and singing since he was you know he'd been on the road since he was 16. right and so uh you know good morning mercies on the radio now and he's like see yeah he took that people now know who I am it's like you've been in arenas people seeing your songs for years so uh talk about kind of catch up now and start walking us through your teenage years and kind of into what then we'll catch up with the torn Wells that's sitting here right here well I've learned that progress is a process okay and when I was nine it was the camp choir and then when I was 12 it turned into leading worship at church and when I was 16 I started writing songs and what was really unique I feel like about my love for the church was that it transcended what role I was playing I didn't care if I was leading worship or playing piano or writing songs or setting up chairs doing the stage design into my teenage years in college Years working third shift and coming in and just running sound you know I just wanted to serve the local church I fell in love with the ministry of it not just the function of the church I fell in love with the people and what it means to create a space where people encounter the presence of God and there are so many roles to be played in that and like you said we place so much weight on people on stages wait that they can't even handle but it's really the people off camera it's the people behind the scenes that help make the load light make it go yes and they create the space with their own gifts and skills and I just wanted to be a part of that and so I started doing something with my youth pastor I had the goat youth pastor you know that's greatest of all time the goat youth pastor he worked at my school as well so I didn't get away with anything and I would go into his his room at lunch time instead of going to the lunchroom as a sophomore Junior and senior in high school and I would go into his room and we would go through John Maxwell books and he would take me through five-minute Mentor so we would have break down character we would break down the 21 laws of leadership in those things and he was helping me develop the what can be the shadow side of a gift and showing me different things about serving people and why it matters and how you can't have a global vision without a local mandate you've got to be present that it's those that are planted in the house of the Lord that flourish you can reach as far as you want but those roots have to go down deep so I would work with him through things and he helped me develop as a speaker he would go into the church with me and help me write my sermons and tell me where to stand on stage and to leave a little pause for effect after that phrase and just really schooled me in all of the dimensions that make someone a minister so when I was thinking about music I wasn't just thinking about record deals in music industry and business because honestly I didn't know that that existed I just wanted to write songs something for people to sing them that led me to Bible College and that's where I met my wife and we traveled and sang together in a group and all of that if you're if you're having a hard time Landing the girl of your dreams figure out a way to travel together in a group right and say because yeah because the options get real narrow when it's just a small group and you're just in front of her every day so I gave her no other choice and that led to starting my band and then we played 200 shows a year cold calling churches getting in a 15 passenger van with leather seats no air conditioning driving through the southern states in the summer just dying in the van and playing but progress is a process and then eventually that's led to Opportunities like this where the platform is so much bigger than I could have ever imagined but the whole time I've been on staff at my church the whole time I've been serving in the local church and it actually reminds me of the process that the Israelites went through in scripture if you go through the Bible actually Recaps what process the Israelites had to struggle through before they got to the promised land they had the promise but they had to go through the process and it's the same for us if you read through the Scripture it says they set up camp in this city and then they set out they went to the next city they set up camp and then they set out they set up camp and then they set out over 40 times the scripture says they set up camp and they set out the interesting thing is the precursor before we see this journey is with the promise God says I'm going to bring you into the promised land but I'm going to bring you in little by little less the beasts of the field multiply against you and overtake you so the very thing the promise that's designed to be our blessing could be the thing that capsizes our soul undermines our ministry and disqualifies us from our calling if God doesn't lead us into it little by little now I believe God can do it quickly but usually quickly means it's a 30-year overnight success yeah it was one thing after another and what I love about the Israelites example although they were imperfect and complained and needed a man of God to to stand in the gap for them they kept moving yeah and I think so many of us so many times had an obstacle or were not there yet or we're dealing with the difficulty and we're wondering why our promise isn't there if you just keep moving yeah God will fulfill his promise and that's why ultimately they inhabited the promised land you know it's so crazy because I was thinking the other day how many times have we heard especially at the end of the year in the new beginnings of a new year of your suddenly is coming your suddenly is coming this is your year of breakthrough and I started thinking I thought you know what I said normally people only pretty much need one suddenly right not every year but maybe 30 years down the road right and then yes there but it is that process and then you're suddenly you know so I think we we think that all this stuff is gonna you know when God gives you a promise he's never going to give you a promise without making you have the faith for the promise that's right right and so that's what and and getting the in the waiting the Bible says those that wait upon the Lord he'll renew their strength yeah they shall Mount up like wings of eagles they'll run and not be weary but that waiting in that time just uh breeds trust yes breeds Faith breeds all the things that we need to sustain as in that moment of the suddenly or the overnight success it's taken me 30 years to get here but everything requires Faith you have to have faith for the promise yes and the faith is what actually activates the momentum that you need to get to the place that God's designed for you beautiful you have to it starts with just a little belief yeah just a little hope I had a friend we're working on something together and my friend said well I'm working on this but I didn't want to get your hopes up I said I'll get my hopes up right I said faith is the substance of things hoped for so I actually have to have hope before I have faith so if I can get hope if I can believe for something yeah if I can continue to move towards something if you don't have a vision for your life you die where there's no vision people cast off restraint you have to have a vision you have to have hope for it and then you have to submit to the process that develops the faith that carries you into it beautiful you um if everything you just said was true about your story your origin story you were about 20 years ahead of me in maturity okay so 30 yeah maybe 30 you know I mean when I was in the process of learning television you know I know when a light is in the right or wrong place but 30 years ago I was pulling cables you know and you know I walked you over to that satellite dish when that was being installed you know my my glamorous television job was pulling cables and doing the whole thing so I've done it all yeah I've been there too and and so basically but I wish I could have said that I was loving the process for the right reason I think I could take it yeah me too I get a paycheck and I want new rims on my car yeah as I was back in those days and and so um you you have intentionally gone deep you are way younger than I am and you're on a stage that God prepared you from it so look you don't have to be a 60 year old overnight sensation you can be a 30 something year old overnight sensation it's up to it's up to the person but show me something in your background where you had to go oh dang I got to get over this I got to get around this I got to get over it something happened when did Faith get drawn uh from you in your very young mature self well there are so many instances I mean I could go back to coming home from Bible College not able to pay for school because I was working at UPS at the time in the shipping Department which was a job that happened it was really a like a mid-shift job so I would get out of my classes and go work till 11 or 12 and then get up in the morning and try to go to class and uh that was difficult and so I would go home work try to get more money to go back to school so I was working multiple jobs at home you know third shift at McDonald's I was doing temp work in a factory and singing on the line you know a lady got me my job at this plastics factory in in Battle Creek Michigan and she kept getting complaints from my supervisor because I was singing and dancing I was like wow if I'm gonna be here I'm going to enjoy it right you know so but it was difficult and there were times you know where I I didn't want to go work those jobs you know I would take my dad's church key he was the the drummer at the church so he had a key and I would go up there and I would just no one there lights off just play piano and sing and pray and read scripture and one of the scriptures that I read that I've held on to is that scripture that says I have called you to build a house unto the Lord be strong and do the work and I realized this takes a whole lot of work there's just no way around it and I think so many times we want the fast track to success we want The Insider secrets we want something that happens quickly we want the suddenly the suddenly that I think of in scripture is in the book of Acts and suddenly there came a sound of a rushing Mighty Wind and it filled the house where they were sitting they were all filled with the promise of the Holy Spirit they have been waiting for that promise for a thousand years this is what was promised to Abraham this was and had gone through generation to generation and they had been waiting for it and then all of a sudden in there waiting in their praying in their desperation suddenly it happened so when Jesus ascended into heaven he told thousands of people to go to Jerusalem and Terry and he would send the holy spirit that he would be with us as the comforter only 120 people went see a lot of people want the promise not a lot of people want the work the weight and the Terry the way the Terry the unknown the questions the where's the paycheck coming from for this where's the the first question I asked when you told me about the satellite and your father expanding it and all that was where'd the money come from well God had already orchestrated it from the beginning but are you willing to step out in faith and see what God will do so That season I feel like you live at Seasons at either different circumferences or at different levels where you you learn it as a 20 year old but then you learn it as a 30 year old and then you learn it as a 32 year old with four kids and then you learn it as a 36 year old and what you the perspective that you have of what God is teaching you is so much deeper but so is the awareness of what he's capable of so the The Challenge in a lot of times I think is clearly there is a gift on you and I guess you know my my several yeah clearly to you okay let's talk about that because it wasn't clear to me and I think that there are so many people out there who would feel like I have felt and it's easy from the outside looking in when we're not looking at ourselves to say well that person has the family that person has the experience that person has the money that person has the resources they have the education but God sees past all of that he sees things in us that we're not even able to see in ourselves sometimes the people who have been gifted to show us who we are miss it I've had professors tell me hey okay I'll tell you this whole story it won't make sense I was in Bible College obviously there to learn Ministry to learn how to preach to learn how to lead and I had the the teaching of my youth pastor that had helped me develop in a certain way but I got into a preaching class and I had my whole thing developed it was something about a revolution I don't know there was a parallel between the Industrial Revolution and the church and all this stuff I don't remember the specifics but I had made a graphic for it I had my notes ready I preached a few Youth Services okay so I knew what I was doing so you had your outfit on I have my outfit on I have my towel my oil just in case I needed to bless somebody in the classroom and I went through my message and the professor said tauren go sit down and don't ever bring something that you got off the internet into my class again yeah I said that that's not off the internet I wrote this he said there's no way that came from you no no and so at 20 20 years old there with the aspiration of being a minister here comes a voice of negativity saying even if it's good there's no way it came from you because good can't come from you now time has given me the right perspective but in the moment I was done speaking got a name for that person address yeah that's right I got some angry mamas out there that'll go handling but I I understand now people said the same thing about Jesus and isn't this the Carpenter's son and Nazareth Nazareth for me Battle Creek you're you're gonna biracial broken home divorced parents you're gonna do so you have something to say you have insight to give you have words to speak not you and so for a long time I avoided as many speaking opportunities as possible when I was in my band we would put the songs together in such a way that I wouldn't have to speak we just flow one into the other and it created this insecurity around speaking but the thing is whatever the enemy pinpoints to attack is the place that God wants to use you the most our mutual friend one of my pastors Victoria tells a story that has inspired me so much about when they took the church and you have her father-in-law's this Dynamic speaker and her mother-in-law is this amazing woman of faith and here she is stepping up into this new role and she said I would be anxious every time before I would speak but this is what impacted me she said in prayer I drew a line and I decided that I'm going to step over the thing that I'm afraid of to do what God has called me to and she does it to this day I don't know if she's aware of it or not but I've been side stage many times as she's spoken every time she speaks she takes a step forward and it's almost like to me you're stepping out of the negative out of what you think you can't do into everything God has called you to and so in my life I have been having to remind myself and I hope that people watching this today are reminded that whatever it is that the enemy has pinpointed in your life and you've probably already thought of it right now pray for him they're right there if you think that I could be speaking to you right now God can't use my marriage I've messed it up God can't use my life I've struggled with addiction I can't speak people have undermined that I can't lead within my organization I don't have the qualifications of the background on the other side of whatever A Lie the enemy is telling you is your greatest purpose so I'm believing for you right now in the name of Jesus that the spirit of insecurity Jesus would be overcome that you would realize that he that is in you is greater than he that's in the world thank you Lord he that's in your thoughts he's that in the negativity and I'm believing right now for you to supernaturally break through the barriers that have held you back and held you hostage telling you things that you can't do whatever it is that God has told you you can't do I came to tell you you in Jesus name I pray that you be released in your purpose today in the name of the Lord wow beautiful so you're a minister that just happens to groove and move and dance and that's really who you are though you've kind of emerged in that and and I'm so proud of you for what you do and you know this this has been a long time coming but from the first time I ever sat in the back somewhere in some green room somewhere at some place and heard you and and heard you communicate I've been looking forward to this day I wanted to hear your origin story I wanted the people to hear your origin story so that when you slide out onto some stage somewhere they're going oh man that's that that's that deep kid man there's that let's just make sure we get the grandkids to go to his tour let's get it you know yeah so look all the information about how you can interface with tauren Wells has been on the screen all this time we'll see in New York for the premiere for The Journey uh you got to ride a horse with Andrea Bocelli he got to sing you got to sing on horses yeah maybe more verses than they were expecting but yes as it was you're gonna love it okay um final thoughts on really kind of anything just you know I mean it's it's I don't want you to leave here yeah with with some little you know little something either something you touched on back in this or something random or something like that the the idea though that um I I love this kind of idea that there could be you know Madge and Bernie sitting on their couch you come sliding out on stage and you got the coat you're doing the whole thing they're going oh man what's up with this guy what's up with Mr Show Business here and then they've sat through here now their slack jawed going oh my God that guy's a that guy's a real that guy's a minister it just happens to know how to dance thoughts on yeah perceptions and and all this kind of stuff maybe you've dealt with that a little bit in your life yeah kind of final thoughts I have I've dealt with and I've dealt with it in myself you know which me do I get to be you know do do I get do I get to dance you know even though I'm wired for it is that off limits you know do I do I get to dance and communicate do I get to preach and write you know I've talked to another friend of ours Levi lusko and he said he was marked by something someone said of you know are you a author that preaches or a preacher who writes and he was thinking I never thought about it and I've thought about that do I get to be everything that God has called me to be and I think the answer is yes and the answer is yes for all of us that we are divinely designed for a particular purpose and it's Unique you know David's purpose was unique from his brothers you know Joseph's purpose was unique from his brothers Daniel's purpose was unique from his generation I think that God has created us all uniquely and strategically and he's placed us here for me everything that flows from my heart comes from a place of purpose and a place of joy and I I was writing a song as the title track of my new album It's called joy in the morning and I wrote it with Stephen furtick I feel like we all have the same friends yeah like and again your friend um but we spent several days together him and Chris Brown wrote this song joy in the morning and I started to dig into this idea of joy this will shock people listening but seriousness is not a fruit of the spirit I I know I'm and I there's a place for reverence there's a time to be serious there's a time to weep and there's a time to laugh I understand but when he lists out all the fruits of the spirit he didn't say to be Furrow proud and serious is some Declaration of God's righteousness no he actually told us that Joy flows from the heart of the Grateful and the amazing thing and I'm going to leave you with this Jesus begins his Earthly Ministry he begins preaching and doing miracles and the first recorded sermon that we have from him is The Sermon on the Mount the Beatitudes and in the Beatitudes he says blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God blessed are they who mourn for they will be comforted and he walks through these eight beautiful truths and Kingdom principles I started looking at that word blessed that word bless actually means happy so you have to think of it like 2023 okay so you have a new preacher in town he just sold out your local arena and he's coming to town by the way he says he's the son of God that that's just a little but he he feels divinely sent from God to communicate and in light of all of the prophets and all of the religiosity of the day he stands up in a room full of people leaning in ready to hear his words and the first word out of his mouth is blessed the YouTube critics are going crazy Christian TMZ is losing their minds because Jesus is telling people how to be happy wait wait Jesus aren't you going to open with the Bible verse first shouldn't you quote something did you pray before this talk shouldn't we talk about like judgment wrath John the Baptist message was repent and be baptized in all of these things and Jesus certain only taught that message but his first recorded sermon to a community of people talked about Joy so how important is the joy of the Lord and its activation in our lives it has to flow from a place of Joy the beautiful thing about Jesus is he chooses his words very wisely the last word of the Old Testament is Curse the first word out of Jesus mouth in a public setting in a recorded scripture is blessed and he tells us how to be blessed how to be joyful beautiful the crazy thing is where he chooses to preach we know it's the the amount of the sermon of you know the sermon of the mount the Beatitudes but it's actually Mount Aramis Aramis means desolate isolated and strength so Jesus chooses a desolate isolated place to tell people where to find true strength he doesn't Point them to anything external he doesn't Point them to things to notoriety to platform to significance he points them inward joyful are the pure in spirit Joy flows from the inside and so if if there are people listening today and watching today maybe you've been like I've been in seasons of my life where I've tried to find joy in all the wrong places maybe you've tried to find joy in a relationship join a promotion somehow Joy is always around the next Corner the next destination can I tell you that you are joyful you are blessed the curse has ended when you look at your spirit and say though I am unworthy and I have little to offer Jesus has called me son Jesus has called me daughter and I get to be a part of his eternal plan to bring Redemption to the world which means Redemption for your life we love you at TBN our mission is to use every available means to reach as many individuals and families as possible with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ thank you for helping make the gospel of grace go around the world without you we couldn't do it God bless you
