What Happens when the Holy Spirit Comes Upon You

when the Holy Spirit comes upon you Acts chapter 1 verses 8 and N but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my Witnesses telling people about me everywhere in Jerusalem throughout Judea in Samaria and to the ends of the Earth after saying this he was taken up into a clown while they were watching and they could no longer see him the purpose of Pentecost the purpose of power is Proclamation when the Holy Spirit comes upon you he gives you power not for status but for service not for show but for service the kingdom of God here we see in the scripture begins as a mustard seed in Jerusalem that's the city Judea and Samaria these are regions and then to the ends of the Earth that's what Jesus was describing when he talked about the kingdom of God being as a mustard seed it begins as something small and seemingly insignificant but before long it becomes the largest of the trees and something begins to happen within our world when the church finally realizes that our growth our movement our advancement is inevitable because of the person of the holy spirit with us the purpose of power is Proclamation the Holy Spirit has empowered you that Souls might come into the kingdom well you say what about the spiritual gifts 1 Corinthians 12:7 tells us of those and the purpose of those is to serve one another well why do we serve one another so that the church can be edified and why do we need an edified church so that the church can do its work and expand the kingdom so you have to realize that you as a born- again believer have been given power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you he does not come upon you in small measures when the Holy Spirit comes upon you he does not come as the new convert Holy Spirit or as the baby Holy Spirit or as the Holy Spirit light and we think sometimes that the Holy Spirit is a reward for those superch Christians can I just tell you a secret there are no super Christians it's the Holy Spirit there's not something special about me there's someone special about me there's not something special about you there's someone special about you it's the person of the Holy Spirit we imagine that the holy spirit is given to us for good behavior or that if we pray enough and act Godly enough and read the Bible enough and go to church enough and speak in the King James language and act really strange when everyone is looking at us we think that by doing these things we are taking on Holy Spirit power but I want to remind you that all the power that the Holy Spirit possesses came to dwell in you the very moment you were born again he is not a reward for Holiness he's our source for Holiness he is not a reward he is a source we don't get power because we do right we are able to do right and get power Because He Lives within us now acts chap 2 verses 1-4 we see that the church here receives the Holy Spirit in a different way now remember that Jesus had breathed upon his disciples receive ye the Holy Spirit and remember that many of his disciples were performing Miracles raising the dead casting out Devils they could not have done that were it not for the power of the Holy Spirit already residing in them so the Holy Spirit isn't sitting idly by until Acts chapter 2 in fact he's in Genesis chapter 1 the spirit of God hovered over the face of the deep so the holy spirit is not just standing by looking over the balconies of Heaven as history passes by waiting until Acts chapter 2 the day of Pentecost he's working throughout all of scripture throughout all of the Patriarchs and the prophets he's present and his work is obvious but something is happening now in Acts chapter 2 There Is this different kind of influence they always had his presence as Born Again Believers we as Born Again Believers always have his presence but we don't always experience his influence because we are not always surrendered acts 2: 1-4 on the day of Pentecost all the Believers were meeting together in one place suddenly there was a sound from heaven like the Roaring of a mighty Windstorm and it filled the house where they were sitting then what looked like Flames their tongues of fire appeared and settled on them and everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability so again I want to emphasize the holy spirit's not standing by until Acts chapter 2 but here the church receives him in a unique way and he's empowering them for Christian Living and for Ministry there is no limit to what God can do with a life surrendered to the Holy Spirit it is not about how charismatic you are it is not about how intelligent you are it is not about how gifted you are it is not about how well-liked you are it is about how surrendered you are to the Holy Spirit surrender is the key to power so here the church experiences this Mighty Windstorm I love that suddenly the Holy Spirit like a Whirlwind sometimes comes suddenly upon the atmosphere enacting change as he moves his power is both a well and a river you see if you look at verses like Romans 88:9 or John 3:5 you can see that the holy spirit is present at Salvation in fact that's how you are born again you are born again of the spirit so he's involved the very beginning you receive the Holy Spirit when you are saved but that reception of the holy spirit is both a well and a river I want to show you something now and I pray that the Holy Spirit would help you to receive this truth because if you understand this truth about the person of the Holy Spirit it will revolutionize your Christianity go with with me now watch this acts 4 I'm going to read verses 23 and 24 and then I'm going to skip down to verses 29-31 so go with me now acts 4 remember now this is after the day of Pentecost this is after the people have received that power from on high he has already come upon them they're born again he's already dwelling in them watch this now as soon as they were freed Peter and John turned to the other believers and told them what the what the leading priests and Elders had said notice here Peter and John are present with this group that's very key when they heard the report all the Believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God and now oh Lord hear their threats and give us your servants great boldness in preaching your word wait a minute stop look up at me he already gave them boldness think of Peter who before the day of Pentecost had denied Jesus three times he was hiding in the shadows and then after the Holy Spirit comes upon him there's this great transformation within him and suddenly he has this great courage and boldness to where he can now stand before the people and declare truth now he's not hiding in the corner he's shouting from the RO rooftops and for every time he denied Jesus 1 2 3 he won a th people to the Lord on the day of Pentecost 1 2 3,000 talk about [Applause] Redemption so why is it they are now praying for boldness verse 29 again and now oh Lord hear their threats and give us your servants great boldness in preaching your word stretch out your hand with healing power May miraculous signs and wonders be done to the name of your holy servant Jesus stop wait a minute weren't Miracles already happening weren't people already being healed yet here they are asking for something fresh you often hear the religious criticizing that term fresh touch of the Holy Spirit power what does that mean it doesn't mean you re receive the Holy Spirit it means you recommit to him there's this level of surrender now that they're coming under watch this now verse 31 remember Peter and John are there after this prayer the meeting place Shook and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit then they preach the word of God with boldness wait a minute wait a minute wait wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute this confused me so bad I was I I was studying it tearing tearing my notes apart I look like a mad man trying to figure this out and those of you who know me know I was not going to let that go I had to understand wait a minute you you you Jesus breathed receive ye the Holy Spirit you receive the Holy Spirit you're born again you receive the Holy Spirit Acts chapter 2 they receive the Holy Spirit and then in Acts chapter 4 again they're Fe filed with the Holy Spirit I thought they already had the Holy Spirit they did remember his influence is both a well and a river it's an experience when you are born again and it is a way of life I'll put it to you this way think of the way that water fills a cup there's permanence there's ecstatic nature to that you fill the cup and it is filled and then think about the way a sail is filled by the wind there's a continual flow of wind pushing that sail filling it the infilling of the holy spirit is both the Holy Spirit does not come and go he dwells within you he abides but the influence that he has upon your life depends upon whether or not you surrender his presence is always with you his influence depends upon how you respond to his presence surrender is the key it's not a matter of how much you have of the holy spirit it's a matter of how much he has of you are you surrendered to him [Applause] my great great-grandfather was a warlock from zachus Mexico I don't say that because I'm proud of that it's just a part of the story and people would come from all over the regions asking him to curse their enemies to heal their sick and there are reports of great demonstrations demonic power that this man committed I did some research into our family history I sat with my grandparents I saw this man's picture heard their story and it was utterly demonic what took place Generations ago in my family now I believe that demons strategize generationally against families you say Brother David do you mean generational curse not exactly because what many people call a curse is actually just a consequence here's why because if the curse depends upon me disobeying too then that means I'm just experiencing the results of my Disobedience and this is why I think it's unhealthy to blame on a curse which actually your undisciplined flesh say what about the the bloodline the legal right I'll tell you my legal right I stand Justified before God say what about the bloodline Brother David the bloodline no matter your family bloodline there's nothing greater than the power of the blood of Jesus and so I know that when I was born again that was broken however as I said demons do strategize generationally if your grandparents were alcoholics and your parents were alcoholics not only were you probably raised in conditions that are conducive to alcoholism but the enemy takes advant AG of those proclivities and those vulnerabilities and he seeds deception that will ultimately help to repeat the cycle now you still have to choose they cont tempt you but they don't do the drinking for you you still have to make your choices but still This Is How They strategize same thing with drugs same thing with with adultery same thing with um struggles with the mind it's all the same the enemy takes advantage of the situation to see deception that helps to repeat the cycle now this is what was happening with me because as a little boy I would hear demonic Whispers I would see demonic manifestations and I'm not saying this to glorify the Demonic I I'm in fact weary of messages that magnify demonic power and minimize the holy spirit's power because I think that's insulting to him you can talk to me all you want about how powerful certain Spirits are but there is no Spirit more powerful than the Holy Spirit [Applause] people want to get deep dives into those things well I got to know the name before it can go my friend The Only Name you need to know when driving out demonic influence is the name of Jesus that's a fact still we have to acknowledge the reality of spiritual war and I was battling tormenting dreams Whispers manifestations And sightings I won't bring Glory by giving details but they were very intense you want to talk about the Demonic realm I've conversed with demonic beings face to face as a little boy and I'm not saying that to brag I me who brags about talking to Demons but that's just how bad it was and I remember over the years it began to intensify greater and greater levels of depression greater and greater levels of anxiety I struggled for years with severe panic attacks crippling anxiety and looking back I realized what it was all along it was deception it was the lies of the enemy and so finally all of this culminates to this intense battle that I just can no longer stand and here's the thing though I was raised in a Christian home my parents are wonderful people of God my grandparents are wonderful people of God they're Pastors in fact one of the reasons I believe they had such a great impact on me is because they were the same people in the Pulpit as they were at home that's a whole different message for a whole different time but finally I got tired of it and I believe that desperation has a place desperation is a great initiator it's not a great lifestyle because desperation means that you're not living like you're supposed to it's why you're desperate in the first place or that there is some trouble that's coming that you obviously don't want to have all the time but desperation does have its place it has its place because I got desperate and so finally one week my family and I went on vacation and if you're a pastor's kid then you'll understand this for my family that family vacation was a week-long Bible Conference in Arizona exploring Arizona in the day maybe not on the morning session and then going to church at night and I remember sitting in the back of the church service watching the praise and the worship people celebrating people praising just liberated you know in the spirit and I remember watching this and I said within my heart I'm saying why can't I have that kind of freedom and I was so jealous over what they had I got angry and I just left the service I remember going back to the room and I'm lying on the bed and that anxiety Eng Ed me again flashes of visions of Hell demonic Whispers just this intense anxiety comp I was lying in the bed trembling and sweating 11 years old by the way and I had been raised as I mentioned a moment ago I had been raised as a Christian I was a pastor's kid so I was the kid who memorized the Bible verses I was the kid who had perfect attendance in Sunday school every Sunday I was there so in order for me to have a genuine encounter with God I had to humble myself and admit that what I had was fake and this is the great challenge for people of religious inclinations they they have to first admit that what they have is not real and this is where ego sets in this is why it's difficult for the religious to enter true plac of freedom and surrender because they have to admit that their rituals and their systems and their good works aren't enough and this is where I was and so I remember telling my dad dad I I want to get saved and so my dad dismissed the family and in the hotel room there were two beds I sat on the edge of one bed facing my father who was sitting on the edge of the other bed and he put his hands out and I grabbed his hands and he began to lead me to Jesus now in the Bible you will not find the sinner's prayer but do you know what you will find Sinners who pray and and he's leading me and I could feel something deep within beginning to break I could feel the facade finally beginning to crumble I began to tremble and shake not with fear but something was happening on me something was happening in me there was this great breaking of that power of darkness and I sensed that freedom was just on the other side of this moment and I knew that I knew that I knew that I was about to meet Jesus and I remember thinking I'm about to meet Jesus the one they've talked about in scripture I me I mean I knew Jesus historically philosophically intellectually and socially but I did not know Jesus personally and so here I am sitting there saying I'm about to meet Jesus I'm going to meet Jesus and I'm praying and I'm crying and tears are flowing down my face my mouth is trembling so bad I can't even get the prayers out but in my mind I'm repeating the prayer and I'm asking Jesus to save me I'm placing my faith in him and I'll tell you this right now that the every moment that Jesus walked in every demon ran out whom the sun sets free is free indeed where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty and so this began a Journey of Faith and I said within my heart I have to know this Jesus I wasn't thinking about Ministry I wasn't thinking about social media I wasn't thinking about getting credits and ACC and the Praises of man all I knew is that I had become obsessed with the Son of God I wanted to know him in all his ways and for 2 years I began to pray 4 to8 hours a day pouring through the scripture I would read chapters and chapters dozens and dozens of chapters pouring through the scripture wanting to know him and there was this movement this life this this Vitality to my spirituality and I began to notice a transformation in me and then suddenly like hitting a brick wall it stopped and I thought was that it is this now the limit of what I am to experience in Christ and maybe you've been there born again saved redeemed and then you hit that wall can I tell you what that wall is it's you and I remember being discouraged by this but remember Church a well and a river they were all filled and then they were all filled again not filled as in they reive the Holy Spirit but there was this sudden access to power as they surrendered in prayer and so I remember going into my room I shut the door and I said to the Lord Lord I am not leaving this room until I have an encounter with you I'm not going to sleep I'm not going to eat I'm not going to leave I am just going to seek your face now please hear me when I say this I am not prescribing to you a method of encountering God there is no such thing because as you'll find out in a moment my method did not work so that's not what I'm saying and so I remember I shut myself in and you know I'm just praying is as you do praying and praying and praying Lord show me Lord what is this Lord what's going on you know you begin to wonder did I do something did I offend you have you turned your face from me especially for an anxious mind it's difficult to go through those kinds of Seasons because of that internal conflict and so an hour goes by and I remember I had my my music playing I had my Sealing fan on it's spinning keeping the room real cool but it was making a little bit of a noise the light was on and before Instagram would you believe it I had my Bible sprawled out on my desk highlighters and a notepad and I was just ready to encounter I set the atmosphere as I knew to do I knew what I was doing I was getting it ready hour goes by nothing happens so now I say I'm going to I'm I'm going to get my way into the presence you know you try to kick that door down so I began to try to guilt God into a response have you ever done that God are you listening God don't you see me God can't you hear me as if he can be persuaded by my my emotion God is not moved by emotion he's moved by faith and so I'm pleading with the Lord and I'm crying I'm and eventually an hour goes by nothing happened so I say okay I'm gonna I'm going to rebuke this devil of I can't pray right I'm going to rebuke this Spirit of no atmosphere and so I I I start remembering all of those spiritual warfare teachings I I was I taught a lot of you know I was taught a lot of spiritual warfare techniques and you know you devil of this and you devil of prayerlessness and I was pointing out Corners I didn't know if there was a devil there but I rebuke you if you're in that corner and you can bet that if there was an adjective I used that adjective attached it to a demon and rebuked it the spirit of this the spirit of that I was making up demons at that point aggression anger Authority raising my voice an hour of that nothing happened and now I'm beginning to regret my ultimatum so then I began to study and apply technique and wisdom and intellect intellect failed an hour of that goes by nothing happens and the lines weren't that clean it was a little bit of mix of all of that but for 4 hours it was all of that and nothing happened and I remember becoming so frustrated so empty I was done people of God when you come to the end of yourself that's when the holy ghost shows up [Music] [Applause] I lifted my hands I closed my eyes and I said Lord I don't know how to pray I had to admit that help me to pray help me find Jesus and then I gave up intellect failed emotion failed I had emptied everything I had there were moments in that session of prayer or my face was pressed into a tear drenched carpet my body would tense with such desire to know him I have to get on the other side of whatever this is Lord I can't get stuck here I want to know you and there was this hunger this desire to connect with what I knew not I don't even know what I was looking for asking for all I knew was I wasn't there yet the Holy Spirit begins to speak to me turn off your fan it's distracting you turn off the fan turn off the light turned off the light again not a prescription for you this is what he was dealing with me personally for now close to the scripture we know that the word is important and that moves of the Holy Spirit depend upon the word you have to have the word but I had read dozens and dozens of chapters already so for then and that moment for just that moment I closed the word and then the holy spirit said something that really shook me up he said now turn off the music I said but you can't move without the music that was my first reaction I don't remember if I verbalized that or thought that but it was like a hesitation I so programmed but I turned off the music and then I just lifted my hands and I wasn't trying anymore there was nothing to try if if it were possible through human effort to enter the presence of God then in that moment I would have entered into the presence of God but no man or woman no matter how anointed they are knows the way into the presence of God only the Holy Spirit knows the way and when you're quiet and when you're still he'll show you it's not a formula it's not a protocol it's not a system procedure there's no secret it's just him and so I closed my eyes and just let the Holy Spirit do his work and in that moment the ordinary plain settings of my bedroom became Heaven on Earth for me I felt a gentle breeze of the spirit's presence enter the room I began to F burst of euphoria and love and peace pulses of electric like Sensations moved up and down my body it was a holy presence and I felt Jesus standing in front of me and I thought if I open my eyes he's going to be standing there staring right back at me I didn't want to move my hand because I thought if I move my hand I might feel it brush up against his robe but there in the Stillness of that moment I encountered such power that again I was transformed again I was refreshed again I was refocused and that moment lasted a minute or two but had I sought it for a hundred years would have been worth it still to this day I can look at that moment as one of the defining moments in my life from then on a greater measure of boldness Came Upon me from then on a greater power against sin Came Upon me from then on greater Revelation greater wisdom Greater Joy greater peace it's not that I didn't have it it's that I wasn't surrendering to it he the Holy Spirit helped me to do it so you tonight I believe can have that encounter with him I'm not going to call you to the front and you watching online you do not need me to lay hands on you in fact I don't want anyone coming up front I want you to stay in your seat because you know that his presence is with you you want that stand to your feet right now [Music] don't try don't beg don't try to work yourself up Just Surrender if only you knew how pleased he was with you see we imagine that when we approach the Lord that we have to enter into this negotiation to have his attention we imagine that we have to fight for him to pay attention to us my friend when you enter that moment of prayer and worship God is Not reluctant God is not just barely putting up with you God is Overjoyed to show you his glory presence and power you don't have to beg so hands lifted all across this room and I want you to make this your prayer now breathe upon me breathe upon Me Breath of God breathe upon me Spirit of the Lord as I lift my hands in surrender to your name most high I'm yielding to your spirit I'm walking in your love Jesus I adore Jesus I adore Jesus I I adore your Holy Name hands lifted all across this room sing out breathe upon me breathe upon Me Breath of God breathe up upon me Spirit of the Lord just ask and he'll do it as I fresh Touch of power com surrender to [Music] your tell them I'm yielding to your spirit I'm Ying to your spirit I'm walking in your love I'm walking in your love tell them Jesus I adore Jesus iore [Music] all Jesus High all Jesus your Holy Name make it your prayer Church make it your prayer Bre Bre of God every voice bre up me of the [Music] Lord as I lift my hands in surrender to your high that's the presence of the Holy Ghost that's the presence of the Holy Ghost [Music] I'm walking in your love cry out to him now Jesus I [Music] adore Jesus
