right around the world you're watching old mates backyard tech all right so here's another classic case of thank you captain obvious for stating the bleeding obvious but if you haven't worked it out by now and you've been hanging around old mates backyard tech for long enough you ought to know i love mx linux just about every pc here in the house runs it and a number of laptops as well the other half's parents pc run it their media pc runs it i love it the reason i love mx linux is well it does what i wanted to do from just being a daily operating system that i can use right through to running media pcs the guys over at mx have just released mx linux 21 beta for everyone to have a bit of a sticky beaker as you can see in the background it's system setup and product review time here at old mates backyard tech and for this one let's have a out of the box what do you get sticky beak at mx linux 21 beta linux windows op systems and apps from old mates backyard tech this is system setup and product review [Music] g'day everyone thank you for tuning in it is system setup and product review time here at old mates backyard tech for a tuesday now colin over at pc tlc has had a bit of a sticky peek at this and i've seen part of his video i haven't watched the whole lot yet i had planned on making this video a couple of days ago but didn't get around to it i thought well i've got some time up my sleeve at the moment i might as well have a sticky beak at it for this uh system setup and product review we're just going to literally have a look at what you get out of the box so once you've installed it what's it going to look like we're going to have a sticky beak of what mx 21 could end up looking like now as far as old mate upgrading uh i'll probably just do an app get dist upgrade and do it that way if there's an upgrade path that means i don't have to blow the everything away again like i did going from uh when he was 18 it was either 17 to 18 or 18 to 19 i had to blow everything away format c drop start again so let's give that's not what i say we don't do much of these anymore i keep forgetting what to say because i've got so many people cracking the sads about them for a tuesday here at old man's backyard tech let's give mx 21 beta the old match backyard tech channel treatment gonna have a sticky peak at it let's get into it all right well the dell r730 is off at the moment so we're going to be running this on the at350 but i've given this thing as much guts as i'm going to give it so we've got six giga ram a quad core cpu and 160 gig hard drive and yes it is booting yuffie gotta boot you fee these days otherwise your operating systems don't work apparently the poor at350 is a little slow to get started unfortunately although hopefully i may be getting another server in the next month or two which would be really nice all right they're calling it wild flower this time it's a bit easy to pronounce isn't it if there is the ability just to do a straight dist upgrade and go from what i'm on to 21 then i'll run it i've got one machine running mx19 still that's a very different background to what we're used to by default isn't it okay let's see what we get now we're on kernel 510 for this it's already gone full hd which is nice this looks a little different okay i'm not gonna bother with the encryption yes yep uh we're gonna call this uh mx linux 21 beta dash vm ah oh yeah that'll do it all right the right time zone give it all this which is right you know i say to go for victoria all right let me get uh oh that's all right whoa now that's interesting i will enable that though but sometimes it doesn't work so well there we go all right so the time is 8 22. all right once this is all installed as usual we'll come back you're watching old mates backyard tech all right well i've enough time to go and make a cup of coffee again took a few minutes but it's probably more we the more we start to realize operating systems now need solid state because who's going to wait five or six minutes to install an operating system no one i can i don't mind waiting five or six minutes for an os to install but let's face it no one no normal person will wait that long all right so let's reboot this already i'm intrigued with a few things so we've seen that the install is different very different normally i'd wait but i'm not going to because i trust mx linux all right okay we have a new wow okay this is nice all right i like this some big changes all right it's mx linux of course i'm going to be enthusiastic about it and i know there are viewers of mine who can't handle the fact that i like mx linux and i use it and i like okay right off the meter the bat i did not need to install vm tools so that's really good that's going to full 16 by 9 immediately i like that okay well let's let's get a couple things sorted out first shall we let's get me up the top oh no not that let's get me up the top so we can see the panel all right let's get into the tweak yes why did you not there we go thank you theme go to mx dark this is all very different all right that looks good that looks good i'm impressed with this already this looks very good very very good all right so oh i gotta change that hang on i don't like that it's better okay oh i see it hides itself oh that's interesting okay well no i'm happy with that so that's that's nice that's that's quite nice there's our panel button do a little bit of customization here just in case all right so right off the meter the bat what do we end up with firefox that's nice multimedia everything there by default mx tools as always let's have a look alright so already we've seen some subtle changes these dialogue boxes look much nicer they're cleaner and crisper eat much more free-flowing so that that i'm happy with as i'll go and knock a box so they're on it's on debian 11. we've got 4160 for the desktop and it's supported into oh wow okay so support for this will hold out for another three years just under three years i'm sorry so that's that's good this is very very good i'm a me i'm i'm immediately impressed let's go back to favorites and we'll go back into tools so already we've seen that uh tweak looks a little different i'm happy with that conkey probably not a lot different snapshot should look the same unless they've updated snapshot nope snapshot still looks like it does so that's all right uh repo manager should still look the same yep repo manager looks the same so there's a few few interesting little tweaks here if we go to desktop settings that hasn't changed that hasn't changed we'll get file system and rubbish on there just don't you i like the new theming i like the new boxes and and the dialog boxes they look much nicer get rid of my [Music] a little bit more spacing down here which is interesting over here doesn't look too different in fact it all looks the same i'm assuming that also looks the same no straight into synaptic nice let's have a look at xfce terminal shouldn't look too different what version are they using of that oh yep so it's pretty much the same version as what i'm already running so that's all right some nice little tidbits here firefox should be version 90. new icon themes which is interesting thunder looks exactly the same sooner hasn't changed for a while you get firefox 9102 it's alright close tabs so thuna hasn't really changed other than the fact that um well there's a few subtle changes you've got your devices now below here but you could probably rearrange all that wow picked up my entire network holy moly well that's good that i'm happy with um so some some subtle changes that's almost like dolphin now isn't it a little bit a little similar to dolphin i take it that this is yeah that's every every time something gets updated more and more of this it's to give those who may not know linux um this citra folder in some cases can have just as much well almost as much stuff in it as system 32. so a few subtle changes in thuna it looks fine no problem there let's have a look at the update and now there are updates for this out updater looks exactly the same mx updater hasn't changed let's have a look at mx software package install this i i have a feeling they may have updated the way this looks as well nope looks exactly the same you've got the debian back ports and we have flat packs in there as well if you've been what is different actually of note is here i think i think this looks a little different as well and this could take a while yeah see this has actually been made a little bit more compact uh which is nice so that that that's good so far i'm pretty and pretty impressed with all this i may end up upgrading everything myself um so what do we get vlc we end up with 301.8 i think that's the latest one out i'm i know i'm running 3018 notice down here there's a little bit more spacing with your um panel icons in previous ones that's sort of been a bit on top of each other there's a bit more spacing in there to make it a little less i'll give it a bit of breathing room i guess now as far as uh office is concerned i'm assuming it is the latest version of libreoffice i say i'm assuming because i don't actually know it looks like it yep library office seven i'm actually quite impressed with this guys very impressed so far let's have a look at the quick sys info so we're on kernel 510 they're being 11 bullseye all right well what we'll do now is h topic and we'll see just how heavy this is that's not bad actually 686 out of 6 gigs so just over well a bit over 10 probably 20 of the usable ram 111 thread 111 tasks 164 threads one running load averages are good cpus almost idling and a swap of big swap a gig geez that's a big swap wow so we're using 688 687 out of 6 out of 5.7 gear so just head over 10 of the ram uh which isn't too bad that that makes it usable the way i look at this if you're using you know if you've got six to eight giga ram and you're using around four to seven hundred meg of it your linux os is perfectly usable you don't need to have copious amounts of ram because linux like with unlock windows where you know if you're on eight giga ram you're going to be pushing the hell out of your computer with linux now you can run a system on six gig ram and it'll be perfectly usable more well obviously in a vm you've got a little bit of lag but in real real hardware six giga ram linux os is going to fly even though we know people will always want more and more and more and more ram because you know the assumption is you know if you're running around with 64 giga ram your computer's going to fly your computer your os is only going to be as good as your cpus and your hard drive so if you're running around with 32 giga ram and you're still only using 600 meg in idle you're still going to be using 600 meg in idle even if you've got six giga ram the only thing is you can run more the more ram you've got the higher you know the higher multitasking you can do so that's pretty good i gotta say i am actually quite impressed with this i like the look of it immediately there are a few things that caught my eye the installation is far more streamlined seems a lot quicker to install sticks with its same weight so that's that's good i mean my the media pc upstairs sits at about 600 meg so that's not too bad um nicer layer it's cleaner obviously an update to thunder which is nice so from that point of view i wonder can we i wonder if you can move that no you can't it's locked in there but that's all right that's all right that'll be fine but i am impressed it picked it picked up the everything like my main rig everything so very impressed with that and i gotta say right off the meet of the bat guys um does this look any different no that looks all the same very impressed unfortunately i can't i i don't like the floral background i'll definitely change the background if i go to run it i'm not going to go with the beta obviously uh i'm going to wait obviously if once it does come out we'll have a full sticky beak at mx21 but as always the guys over at mx fantastic job really really nice job it's cleaner it it it's it's a much nicer everything except the colors are terrible that would go oh you guys can't see that hang on i'll put it there that would go that's a horrible color but look everything's there it's again it's a beautiful beautiful distro what do you get in there so you get uh l break mahjong peggy and uh swell flop graphics not much in graphics this time that's interesting interwebs not a lot multimedia fair bit in there mx tools as always heaps of stuff in there office library and your settings menu which is also very very nice although i've noticed i think it's gone it is a r and r is gone that's interesting so that being said can you actually because i know with the mx i'm already running i can adjust fine tune the thing-o oh you can still so you've still got your gtk scalings and everything so that's that's good your exit oh there's your xr and r scaling so instead of having xr and r x r and yep it's not there so x r and r is now in here rather than as a separate app in the mx menu stream um very impressed i've got to say i am i am actually quite quite impressed with this there's your compositor so you can change how everything looks this is interesting what else do we get in here there's a lot in here now isn't there there's there's your apple so this is interesting i've got to say i'm intrigued with this this looks good then you have your gnome set if you want it my being known it's terrible i'm very impressed i'll tell you what once it goes official you can guarantee we'll be doing a full system setup and product review of this but i'd say look if you are a mx person don't have a sticky beak at it for yourself but right off the meter the bat on face value very good very very streamlined it was quick to install but mx always is it's yeah i'm unlocking what i'm saying here i'm liking the borders i'm liking the whole layout the i think again as always they've done a good thing obviously you know with debian there's still 32-bit support so steam and play on linux and all that will install into mx as it always does but i'm actually quite impressed i like what i see obviously when i go to i'll make more coffee here guys obviously when i go to install it onto various machines there'll be a lot of stuff that gets taken off it but very nice remastered cc's in there select sounds in there system sounds tools nvidia drivers very good i'm impressed already so there's a few things one a much more streamlined installer would be interesting to see what they do with that uh generally speaking the feel of it well it's mx linux i need i'm not going to say anything else than that i love it it's debian 11 bullseye it's on colonel 510 so kernel 510 you know i i remember when colonel fire first came out and it was a little bit as your father very impressed i like what i see and i will undoubtedly i will upgrade pretty much guaranteed no questions asked so there we go mx21 beta i'll leave a link in the description below for the download of it um it is available off mx's website as well but hey look i'm impressed very impressed there we go anyway now as far as the rest of the day is concerned i have no idea um we'll probably call it quits for today guys because the worst thing that could happen to me in the next half an hour or so is that i start getting another video organized and end up ditching it because i've got things to do so we'll call it we'll call it a day here at old mace backyard tech for a tuesday and i'll catch you around the channel tomorrow for midweek wednesday have a good one this has been an old mate's backyard tech presentation
