[Music] all right i've said it before and i will continue to say it even though a lot of people hate it but when it comes to a linux operating system for a pc or a laptop i prefer something based off debian be it just straight up debian or a derivative thereof as we know apart from just a couple of laptops every other pc and laptop i've got runs a debian based system specifically mx linux but there's one debian based system we haven't had a look at for a while and for weekend saturdays i thought it might be an idea to have a sticky beak at what they're offering at the moment it's system setup and product review time here at ole miss backyard tech and for this one let's have a sticky peek at sparky linux 5.14 linux windows op systems and apps from old mates backyard tech this is system setup and product review [Music] good day everyone thank you for tuning in it is system setup and product review time here at ole miss backyard tech to kick off weekend saturdays and we're having a bit of a sticky beak at sparky linux as an out of the box review so what do we get straight up out of the box as we know sparky is based off stable and rolling release repos out of debian and it uses that apt us to get rid of the contrib and non-free repo stuff if you want to use it sparky is technically a lightweight debian based distro whether it's lighter than mx linux remains to be seen and i thought well we haven't had a look at sparky in a long time and i thought well i've at least got to get try and get two videos out for weekend saturdays especially after yesterday's efforts of what it ended up being nearly eight videos out i think i've got yesterday so let's uh let's give sparky linux old mate's backyard tech channel treatment gonna have a sticky beak at it all right so we're out on the at350 for this um just because of the way the server is obviously as we know it's not exactly a happy camper i've given this six giga ram dual core cpu and 120 gig drive but to save hassles and i know people are gonna go off their rocker at this i'm running it in bios mode all right i know it's a catastrophic way of running an operating system these days but it means i'm not wasting time trying to reset the vm if the uf mode doesn't work all right so as we know sparky comes with three desktop environments i just can't remember which iso i downloaded after yesterday my mine's a bit phased out um but there's lxq mate and xfce and as we know lxcute's supposed to be the updated version of the old lxde but i actually don't like lx cute and i know a few youtubers don't or lxqt whatever you want to call it it's supposed to be a a newer version of the old lxde but i don't believe it to be i actually think it's worse i'd take lxd over i've said this before you know my my three standard desktops are kde xfce and lxde but you know that infuriates some people that i like those desks you should be using tiling menus and window makers i don't like them i don't care if you don't like them use them so really okay all right bring that up a bit well that's interesting it's already picked me up in melbourne oh now that's weird oh god what have i done hang on go back to australia no not lord howe we get the option of anything no melbourne it is okay i think we'll be installing vm tools into this one guys okay yeah i know i should be doing manual partitioning because that's how people do it cbf this is just a quick out-of-the-box setup to see how see what you get with it these days huh my usual six character system setup and product review passwords two week i use that same password on all our sspr videos what the hell's going on here okay that's never happened to me before in any operating system i've looked at okay no no all right so as i said this is just a straight up sticky beak out of the box uh review of this because we haven't had a look at sparky and i'm not look it's a it's a as we know it's based off debian stable and rolling it's got that aptus uh tool in it that gets rid of the con contrib and non-free garbage if you call it garbage um i mean we all know that so my my initial viewpoint is that this is probably going to be a s lighter in overall operation compared to that of mx but that doesn't mean i'm going to like it because i know people hate this scenario with me now running mx pretty much consistently across the board on all bar two laptops and every pc in the house running mx linux um i'm pretty much set and i've got two copies of my lx 4.2 i've got one in a vm and one on that little well not not so little but i've got one on that zeus um blue laptop so i mean look sparky linux it does have its followers and those followers do enjoy the operating system um but i'm like all right well we'll have a sticky because we haven't had a sticky beak at it for a while all right let's uh let's say video time we'll come back when we're ready to reboot and log in well i'm not lying that did take a while didn't it i doubt the acer will hold out the rest of the year if i'm honest with you all right so let's reboot this i'd say i'll have to get vm tools installed into it so that it uh comes up 16x9 i think by the looks of it i've accidentally downloaded the desktop release i'm not keen on which is lx cute or lxqt if it reboots jesus i think at some stage in the coming weeks guys we might end up blowing away entirely and i mean entirely the acer and start again because i think she's she's definitely on her last legs guys if this decides to reboot a big if okay what the hell's going on here all right guys hang on a tick you're watching old mates backyard tech all right well finally it rebooted i just went into the web front end of the at350 and for some unknown reason it's getting caned i don't know why there's no other operating system running and the cpus are getting hammered all right so which desktop did i get hopefully not lxq because i don't like it but i think that's the version i've accidentally downloaded still got a very typical debian login the i had a viewers a viewer asked me i can't remember might have been stephen or wayne or someone asked me about if i like debian why don't i if i like a debbie and distro why don't i have straight up debian and my reply to the comment was because often you'll find that a debian derivative may add their own themes and and stuff to the distro so they take the debian kernel they take the very bare bones of debian and then mod them to suit the distro and sparky does the same thing okay exit exit okay so the first thing i need to do is uh it is lxq i'm sorry i've downloaded the wrong desktop environment that's that's problematic all right let's um let's get uh let's get open vm tools installed firstly reload everything to make sure i've got all the packages the one thing i've noticed with a debian derivative specifically is when you do install from debian even if it's from the net inst you've often got to go in and comment out the cd rom uh i think i typed that wrong didn't i hang on a minute um open vm tools mark do we have the desktop integration for it no we don't all right apply that that was quick well did it go to full screen no typical of lxq it didn't do it all right so now what i want to do is go into system tools where is my display settings for this thing oi one of the settings okay so they call it monitor settings all right i want where's my good god what the hell all right let's go to that and let's actually you know what guys i think we'll we'll leave it like no we won't let me reboot it and uh let me reboot it and we'll come back one of the reasons i'm not a fan of lxq is the fact that it doesn't work properly with open vm tools because i still can't get 1900 by 1080 but anyway all right let's uh let's get out of this save yes so what do we get with sparky linux these days now get out of that all right so you have feather pad lxq file pac-man for your file manager looks a little bit like um sooner not exactly but it looks a little bit like it uh education so you get the full liberty office pack but yeah you do you get full liberty office firefox esr uh lx image scan right or scan light sorry screenshot full libreoffice pack programming your icon browser sound and video focus screen you get vlc player in there as well pulse audio exile and cheese system tools fair bit time shifts in there for your backups as well system upgrade q term qt or q terminal i should say and q terminal drop down g debbie for your package manager so it is somewhat lightweight there's all your preferences we can go and have a look at these so there's your there's your everything there configuration panel so monitor settings you can see there advanced refresh rate i don't like lxq guys i really don't i know we needed to progress from lxde but this is just yeah i'm not i'm not a fan of it um you can see here i mean we can i'm assuming you'd still do this no you can't oh hang on the other half's knocking at the door hold on guys oh sorry about that so there's firefox just close that down it's pretty much standard stuff anyway um desktop preferences uh let's get computer and trash on there okay so there's those two um look it's all right i mean it the one thing i like about it it's debian so i'm happy about that but i don't know i just i think i've got the wrong version here because uh i'm trying to find my terminal where to go there it is do we have h top in it no just be intrigued to see how much lighter this is compared to an xf ce version as we remember lxde was lightweight x11 desktop all right so if we bring that up a bit four hundred and four hundred and say for argument's sake less than ten percent of the ram so 453 off six gig essentially or 5.8 67 tasks 93 threads one running light averages are pretty light which is interesting um cpu barely being touched and obviously there is no swap being used so it is lighter than an xfce by good i don't know i think i've got upstairs i've got mx linux sitting idle at about 600 meg off eight gig um actually no i think it's 16 gig upstairs so it's 600 meg off 16 gig so it's definitely light um but this is still all right it's just i don't i got the wrong iso i should have i should have freaking got the xfce iso and i didn't i ended up with the lx cube but guys look honestly i mean you it's all right um what do we got there oh personal wolfus persepolis download manager i haven't seen that for a long time have not seen that for a long time at all it's okay look i i know there are a lot of people out there that do like sparky linux because it is such a light debian distro and that's something they do have going for them it's very light um even with this vm at six gig you know if i was running this vm at four gig and it's still sitting just over ten percent of the ram which still makes it extremely useful all right the usability is off the charts but um if i go back to there so you get you you get your two desktops you can pick from all right you can go and have a look at this oh yeah show windows from desktop definitely so you know it's it's it's all right i'm just not does it see the network yeah it does see the network that's interesting it is good i mean you get a fair bit out of there obviously it's kept light so you can add whatever you want to add but if you're wanting a an extremely lightweight debian like really light debian based distro and as i said as we know it comes off rolling and stable you could have a look at sparky if you are one of these people who enjoys the lxq de you'll probably like this um there's enough in here to get yourself started out of the box initially anyway i mean you're not having to add stuff to it to get yourself started like you do with some linuxes but sorry mx beats it for me personally mx beats this um but you've got i mean there's a heap of stuff here to have a sticky beak out there's your open box setting so if you like open box you can modify your open box settings there's your session settings appearance see what we get with appearances so you can go all the way up to [Music] where you can have it as motif you can have it as common desktop environment wow um let's go with the dark thing i'll do it oh that's better hey that's a nice dark theme i like that that's not bad so there we go it look it it's if you take the lxq or lxqt scenario out of it sparky linux is a very light debian distro the lightest you can go after this i think is devuen that's probably the lightest debian like distro you can get at least that i'm aware of anyway but look there's a fair bit to get you started out of the box focus screens there xf burn vlc is in there there's your sparky tube um oh radio stations in there okay pulse audio exile for your music player although i just tend to with linux use vlc except for mmx which i've got a win amp like music player on mx i think it's uh qmmp because for some reason xmp doesn't work properly so there we go it's all right look as i said guys if you're in if you're looking for a lightweight debian distro have a look at sparky um i'm certainly not just going to i don't really want to just you know as some people say you know if you find something like this you throw away your old linux operating system no you don't no you don't be realistic oh hello what have i done here oh quit oh that's your network manager these days well i don't need wi-fi because i haven't got any wi-fi interesting to see if you look at some linuxes this menu is actually split between left and right click now i've just right clicked on this i've come up with the uh with the whole thing so there we are anyway there we are sparky linux 514qt out of the box stickybeak stick around because we've got a uh coffee check coming up shortly have a good one
