love is way in the morning we are sway the morning say 4 or 5 hey heaven I've been really excited about our next guest yeah I had a chance to watch this career evolved relatively short amount of time as far as we know but you know everybody start doesn't begin when the public finds out about them something triggers you in your heart make you decide you want to become which you become and this this next guys has really shook up the world and in many ways you know being confident and whoo-hoo-hoo she is also on the approach to music then I honest transparent in the music and also one of the things I find fascinating about our guests and the band that that she plays with is that um the really great musicians you know great artists all around and so I want to welcome you to the show get up of fear thank you what up man how you doing how you guys doing great good you know your first time on the show yes Rob you know it's not your first time in our lives so you know last time I saw you was was it at the airport yeah that's right you know now we bumped it to each other Connor afterwards I felt kind of weird because you would it with your mom and I was like oh [ __ ] second fear right no I was a lot of people exhibit with hanging out in there but yeah it was like on the way to essence first movie yeah yeah and I was like oh and I was you know you was kind of nonchalant woody so I didn't know if I should really get up get up in it you know no thanks I'm glad you came said I do made me feel like real special be trying to come up here gasps you feel special you're a legend breath oh thank you you stop don't you let you drown okay yeah-yo was great because your mom was so cool - my mom's edition yeah how does she feel about the success of this I mean she's she's uh she's my biggest fan she's my biggest critic she's real proud of me yeah yeah yeah awesome what does she critique um my voice she used to critique my own my music more so like just cool type stuff because my mom is a huge music fan like she's a music nerd and she used to want to be an engineer as well which is what kind of pushed me to keep engineering and whatnot you know um I know you perform you you make you met you making me think about telling you earlier my daughter when I saw you guys perform my daughter's a student at NYU get it you something Oh Q is like daddy daddy sit is here you know they're performing on stage and she started asking me all these questions last night and I was like listen Kiyomi why don't I just send me the questions and then I'll ask them on your behalf right on okay I like to do that something you brought up about musicianship it was one of the questions she's at yak so you mind if I fire our daughters question please Sami okay I'm pulling out my cell phone however you want to be sought out and why are you by the way well what phone is there cuz I got two we know how you work you need an extra phone there you go oh you know what I just got this one fixed I'm two phone shouting right now to the other friends Oh Jake's life okay all right so okay so all right here we go this is from Kiyomi Callaway my daughter okay first question it look let's see literally look at these questions fit with the recent Grammy frustration and outdated music genres hey shout out already okay so hopefully list is he lives out until a call okay with the recent Grammys frustration and outdated music genres one could classify the Internet as sort of an alternative art and B yet they are labeled as neo-soul classifying your music if you believe in classifying at all I was calling I was I was going under a neo-soul for a while and then we realized like it's also music and so we just kind of dropped the Neo and just started you know reppin Seoul again because it's hard to put things in specific boxes for me I understand the need for it people people need categories to organize things in their head but ultimately it's its soul as a very broad genre so it's just easier to just call it that I feel like soul music fans are soul music fans thinking I would only listen to that is she listening yeah okay all right next question compared to other artists nowadays the internet does not have many music videos released this is an intentional decision to avoid visuals in a digital era what's our major like theater but those good she speaks Japanese she could be what everything is yeah well then um I didn't realize that we didn't have that many videos now I mean I think we have like two per album two or three per album for us I think that's kind of average pretty average right three videos or less each other yeah compared to other artists yeah well I've noticed there are a lot of artists nowadays who make a lot of like homemade music videos just on the spot real quick just to grab people real quick that's dope so I think that you know people grab a DSLR and go film the music video real quick like technology is letting everybody you know be creative and so does dope me um I don't know we got this you know when the label can give us some extra and we shoot videos otherwise you know okay that was real okay all right uh especially heard and in special affair the Internet can be interpreted as soothing and laid-back yeah I'm reading it yeah at your concert you wanted people to turn up to it will you talk about how you balance this calm groove with the turn up reaction it's difficult I got it is it and that's a great question but you can't not get some really good questions right now for the blood-bought is not well you know I used to DJ for our future right and those shows were just all kinds of lit there were 110% lit all the time and when we started doing internet shows through the first two albums I started missing that energy which is why egodeath our third album ended up having a little more energy behind it behind the production I did that just so I could like try to translate it live and have more fun on stage and I don't know connect better with our actual peers because you know we were doing great in front of older audiences like older solo fans but the kids were just like whatever you know and I don't know like we're still kids so I wanted to I wanted to connect with my periods a little more so we wrote some little you know different songs I don't know I I don't know the beat on special affair to me just makes me want to just you know turn up a tiny bit let me go on to more that's it you got a work today all right yeah all right okay see it your style breaks boundaries in gender norms and I Kiyomi actually want you to know it's coming from finding not only refreshing but also empowering to have a female identifying and lesbian artist showing young girls everywhere that they can be successful at their art while remaining true to themselves will you speak on some instances you've had to battle battle others on your truth I know there's been a lot of controversy surrounding homophobic lyrics have you how have you handled working with people who disagree with who you innately are ah no shout out this is a great interview her name's Kiyomi Calloway though yeah rising stars okay um well dang I I've been blessed I've been very lucky to have not had that many issues where people have come at me trying to make me do anything that wasn't like me shoutout to Sony they've never tried to change me or my music or anything like that and I think part of that is coming from our future coming from a group of people who was like no we're not changing anything you know like we're doing what we want to do and you can't tell us anything I think that kind of set the tone back in those days I was getting a lot of questions about being from a group who was quote-unquote homophobic and my answer was always you know if they were actually homophobic I wouldn't be here yeah it worked out it worked out yeah okay I'm a touch she's not picking up okay I'll ask the last question she in class yeah see that you know why you said you're doing something with the blacks going to us I mean yeah yeah yeah QA okay that's a last question I'm not sure how great this one is you're really young to be touring can this industry be overwhelming for you at times and what are some of the things that have especially stuck out about your tour process and then also is speed lacy retrospect I'm looking at this question was for Steve lazy I wasn't even for it Steve lazy is single yeah position change as a father and everything has changed everything talk talk some business yeah no we all Steve Lacey got out his album drops tomorrow is not album his song series drops tomorrow doesn't really then what was she said to me she said in relation to Steve I noticed that the instruments levels seem to be more prevalent than the vocals at last night so look at me since I couldn't help but think it was intentional even if it wasn't oh that's good okay I was able to more so notice the effects you all used on your instruments specifically on Steve Lacey's guitar heard this funk effect would you just which we discussed the impact funk has had on your music in the process experiment with past sounds oh that's amazing I mean well yeah we did have a lot of microphone issues last night at the venue um especially with Steve's mic Steve uses a headset mic so he can walk around the stage while you sing it and we just got a new one and we're still messing with it but um we've we've been funk fans I think we were more so influenced by funk on our second band album feel good shout-out to Jamiroquai because they're like our biggest funk influences oh wow legends legends right go ahead and let me ask them so your approach to music is it let me write this based on how I'm going to perform it or let me write this based on just I need to just get it out and then we'll see how it turns out there are certain songs where I'll think about what going to sound like live yeah you know there's one song on my arm called nothing to something like the hook on that one I specifically was like okay yeah live show i'ma write this hook for this live show ironically were not performing it but but usually I just kind of just write just something that I can listen to over and other Hardison you just got to get it up yes the Melody's got to be right through the words got to fit it's got to be like the puzzle has got a little bit done I don't know all right well Syd is here man you know I get a lot of gang from your songs too hey you know they speak to me you know being out there formally I was out there Syd I did my dirt you know there's a lot of like songs like over and different songs like you touching a relationship issues that is like hell this is so enlightening you know that you're able to nail the right in the middle which leads me to believe that at some point in your life you've been a player uh-uh no no no okay well you got player attended all the songs about the same girl no okay they're all they're all probably about different girls over time though like there's a there might be a song in there about my ex from like three years ago maybe there's over is about this girl I was dating last year in Australia just randomly you remember the lyrics for that can you say the political birth oh you ain't got to do too much yeah yeah I mean um it's written all over your face maybe we can keep in touch I'll call you when I come around hope you pick up just um you know cause like it didn't end badly okay we just literally fizzled out so I was like okay it got to a point where I was like okay can I talk to other people like cuz he never said it was over you know what I mean but we stopped talking so I'm like am I allowed to talk to other girls now like so that was literally me asking like it is safe to say like you've done that's all good if it is just just want to know that make some clarity so you're monogamous I'm not a player are you monotonous you know we know right now I am I am NOT I'm it's a lot to handle more than one more than one one there's two nights expand handle one good girls were at the thousand three players like really played nothing to something good it says yeah okay all right let's play this all but the way you said it was like swetha morning's a full five man said is here the album is call team I was given a little more European accent so what do you not [ __ ] research to worry everybody thinks is um like Vinay so what it is like finish it's like a shark fin damn I just skipped over that yeah a shark fin yeah oh okay okay all right I did that so hopefully people who pick up let me see it let me see it settle please okay well so what made you put the notch in the fan was that just ah I just started without character okay no I'm not perfect I'm not perfect it's that thin of a leopard a tiger angry why Santa I was thinking we're great white mm-hmm great white yeah why not great black great black okay let's run without great black so yes yeah I like that you like I like okay she changed the logo to black yes I know write your music this album I enjoy your music anyway you know but I love when folks do so several efforts thing you can hear more than character you produce the entire album or name I produced three songs first another something when I just play I produce no complaints and I produce small more so did you feel doing it in the bedroom or you go he's still doing it in the bedroom yeah why I have like three studio set up in my house I flex a little bit yeah I'm like a studio in there like gearhead I don't like being in the studio all day but I like equipment you know I started as an engineering so I know how to build studios so is it awkward at all when you say to the rest of them the guys in the Internet okay this is my time to do my own thing we're all doing it okay so um tonight like you know this New York show will be doing we start with some internet songs and then Steve Lacey is going to do a set where we're all backing him I'm singing backgrounds how then we do some more internet silence and then Matt Martians does it and then a couple more internet songs and then I do my [ __ ] and then we do some more Internet songs and we out that's fire a long show how long is it so 92 hours about two hours you get your money's worth oh yeah we don't we don't need openers anymore that's what's up I like that baby go ahead I know you've been a you know okay well Sheldon soaking it all and all the good stuff so uh when I listen to a 2 album especially from newer artists you can kind of hear who is influence and who listens to older artists and kind of want to recreate some of the sounds and the diverse textures you know within the production so I'm just curious like if you could sit in on somebody's production session or studio sessions from the past who would you want to kind of spy on um that's hard uh shoot maybe brandy I want to be live oh yeah if there was a song that was once on that had in the Lea feel to it and oh yeah you know everybody literally everyone who hears that I'm planning was that subconscious or it just kind of came out that way I just came out that way I didn't even write that song that was the one song I didn't write on the album my writing partner though he wrote that for him he produced it and wrote it for me and he hit me up likes it I think I got this I think I got a smash for your album I was like I I'm on my way I thought up on him he played it for me I was like yep let me rewrite this a little part of this verse let's write a bridge I'm gonna record it well again don't you just want to hang out with his buddies it spills out I'm stressing every day getting up doing is were crime yeah you do what you love oh thank you man you call me a legend I'm good appreciate that you know how do you not cross like to have it fresh people live in pieces yeah yeah and legendary status yes all right legends in the room man Phoebe okay well reason why I brought up that question was because we heard that you were a big Neptune's fan yes okay so I decided to make a little quiz for you base it on the net so you keep your luck fit I think we heard that you're a big Neptune's fan so let's see just how much you know this is the Neptune squid right now on swag is the morning all right yeah no no I thought it would be a little too easy to just play beach because they have such a distinct sound so you'd be able to pick out a person that's in this production or not so I did some digging in their discography okay and stuff that they were involved in that you may or may not know look fit okay I learned something today you know first we're going to play a clip directly effects from Shaker were they aroused in it or not yeah yeah that was the first one ready Riley discovered four other time ten verse was written by Pharrell Williams not again SWV you're the one for me involved in it or not I don't know I know they did I know they started out doing a bunch of SWV remixes I know that's how they got into the production game for the most part a particular song with involved I don't know what it was it what's the answer no no no yes because I advise I know it's just remake didn't work with SWV on a black cherry yeah well yeah because if you look at the Wikipedia page they're all there first like a bunch of their first stuffs is all SWV remixes which really inspired me because when I first me and Matt first started doing internet stuff we were doing a lot of remixes too and I was like okay we on the right path microwave it but see you hear the gang she gay right the backstory hahaha I'll give you a salute to that thanks I'm gonna go harder all right put them jay-z black Street City is Mars it's don't sound like Neptune but I know you want to go to yes or no no you be incorrect Chad Hugo played the saxophone Oh said no Morel by himself is not not too easy both of them yeah right they love it no no Chad did it was right all right let me explain the game along with that clip number four okay go go yes you are correct that's one of my favorite ones with understand sit down you got to come back and hang out with us oh good hey we're family right now No thank you guys do have an absolutely safe I'm proud of you what you're doing and you're doing it your way you know and anybody that get my daughter that is fired you know she's my I matter guys thank you absolutely god I can I just let her hang out what song ever play okay cool then all right come to the show I'm a teller got a score these daddy points in you told our young man see you by watching yeah yeah he tells me by watching them all right I got you all right big the brand new album is called VIN make sure you pick it up is out now it's a great project and you can listen to it with the entire family on a roll you're working out especially in a romantic situation yeah hey fellas it's a lot of game on this album you want a lot of explaining stuff well ladies you got a lady or you got a man whatever your situation is is game on this out this is it again very impressed all right
