You'll Never Believe How Close They Came!!! Swimming With Giants || Humpback Whales in Tahiti

now there's the mama good looking down I wouldn't get my water go sit with them that was a tail so I think that might be it yeah - OH [Music] so I don't know if you ever watched the movie Whale Rider came out in 2002 but ever since I watched that I have kind of wanted to write a whale but I know that's not okay but here in French Polynesia you can swim with the whales and they're out there and everybody is posting all their insane photos like that and I want to go do that that's amazing are you telling me you're not guaranteeing me whales today I'm on the wrong boat [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] so three of us are going in CJ's gonna stay back with the boat we'll do a little bit of whale watching and then one of us will come back and swap because one person needs to stay with the boat and we've stayed hundred yards or meters away as with any great mission it starts with a bit of research we contacted the local government to verify laws and most importantly checked in with the Whale protection organization to make sure we're respectful of the gentle giants we're seeking out the rules are straightforward and mostly boiled down to keeping the boat 100 meters away from the whales keeping the humans chill and like any species never get in between a mother and a child [Music] one of the locals told us the whales can see you and they're very curious so relax Keep Calm and they'll come to you it's wisdom born from a lifetime of encounters and it turns out he's totally right [Music] [Music] [Music] do you think that baby is gonna cut you yeah a little more comfortable with the Bob right there look at see her we're all avid who's awesome that baby was like in full play mode yeah so they're right there I don't know if you can see him there whale just came up right underneath them it's oh man I hope she's getting some good footage I am back here keeping an eye on the boat so you drop your people in they swim over have the experience come back and then they're gonna swap I'm gonna get to go in sure oh cool man I hope Nicky's getting some good stuff what an experience like so fulfilling to have something just [Applause] [Music] this is magical like being suspended in time I'm completely enchanted but thankfully my hands are frozen around my camera holding their position because my eyes are locked on this beautiful creature I can actually see her scanning my figure taking me in and then returning to meet my gaze I'm looking at her but she is looking at me and it's a look so deep it's like she's peering into my soul leaving me feeling naked and exposed but completely at home [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so it's off that was freaking amazing I look just I'll go in the water and now I'm seeing with the boat we found a mooring ball here so how perfect was that CJ and Jason are still out there and a tour boat has just arrived which means there's going to be a whole bunch more people in the water and she the whale and not to like as many people three or four or five no big deal any more than that she starts to get warm uh-huh Wow I don't even have the microphone on I bet that was loud Oh [Music] [Applause] you see [Applause] [Music] [Music] Nayla go stale and the sunset oh my god that would be epic come on nature got a good feeling about this I think we're gonna get a tail [Music] come on baby come on tell-tell feature is the best apparently they do Wow and that view that view and that is out of focus and that view that view my good friends damn good day here we are day whatever of chasing down whales we figured out the beat perfect time to come out here is right around lunch you can see where the whale operators are so you can see where the whales are but we wait patiently so that we don't get the tour operators way and wait for them to all go to lunch sometimes it works it's been it's Cruiser our time bTW we're not chasing them she's using that word figuratively No all very good point I'll just dump over with all my mistakes I'll write it in no bail granted over - I'm just growing this up all the way around so there you [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] like us whales need a surface to breathe and new mothers need a ton of rest the mother lies down between 15 and 50 feet deep and the calf will tuck in under her chin or a flipper the baby's way more active since they need to breathe every 3 to 4 minutes but the mom she can stay down for 45 minutes the momma humpback whales are massive like a big beautiful submarine at around 50 feet long and weighing 40 tons she's bigger than most of the sailboats in our anchorage and that cute little baby isn't so little even the calf is 20 feet long and sucking down a hundred and fifty gallons of milk every day [Music] come to night or about lunch is over people watches over was amazing bad visibility bad visibility but very playful baby and a super chill relaxed mom though yeah yeah lunch break [Music] I think we may be obsessed we have a problem we have a problem no we're going a whale searching again ready umpteenth time it's addicting just like it's just such an amazing experience how do you say no I don't want to go do that again today you don't nobody would say that nobody saying that's it I wish you go where this thing [Music] bread [Music] [Music] yes obsessed would be the right word the hours have become days days have become weeks and our dinghy has never seen so much action driving miles out into the open ocean scanning horizon looking for spouts we're simply swimming for hours with nothing but an endless abyss beneath us or having an encounter of another kind and there's beginning the shark yeah really really really really really close ooh ooh I just heard the whales [Applause] [Music] [Music] you look good [Music] terrific [Music] the visibility fluctuated from crystal clear to cloudy and dense but even the briefest encounter was like like a shot of euphoria providing motivation for yet another day but of course wildlife doesn't operate on our schedule then about two hours perfect conditions and we're getting skunked well hey say it and I think the whale season is officially over been several days since we've had a decent whale experience again able to actually get in the water with them and then it's been a few days at least of no whales at all no whale boats out there so we haven't seen anybody else spotting them we haven't spotted them I think all the babies mamas have all moved along which means voice logs there's no more ladies around unless we're gonna sail to Antarctica new.we that's that's the last of our experience with the whales for the season oh but it's an epic the most amazing like animal experience I think we've ever had and we've encountered a lot of you know bears and really cool stuff while hiking and exploring but that is just so unique it's hard to say goodbye to it right we don't have a choice and and then we're heading off we're gonna take a cue from the whales and migrate to another Island where we've been told by fellow cruisers that we met we can go swim with the manta rays which are not done yet and they're just massive and they look so stinking cool so yeah one more cool experience may be left ahead of us only one oh well yeah might as well stop saying that's it we've done it all go well thanks for watching if you liked this video please give it a thumbs up and consider sharing it it helps us out tremendously we'll see you next Sunday [Music]
