hey youtubers JB coins here with another video this one on the controversial susan b anthony dollar some people love them some people hate him if you saw our video on the dollar that should have been you can see the similarities in the design between that and this coin effectively frankest borrower designed the pattern coin that we showed you in the dollar that should have been and all they did was they lifted the image of the lady liberty that he had here and they plopped down susan b anthony and into the coin what they retained was the reverse to make it easy they just took the eisenhower reverse made it smaller this was designed by astronaut Michael Collins who was on Apollo 11 and so they that was their excuse for keeping it for the Susan beat the Susan B was not too much difference in size than a quarter so it caused a lot of confusion for people and that was part of the excuse of why people hated him so in 1979 when they began production of these in Philadelphia they started out with what has become known as the narrow grim far date because it has the thin rim here and the date has adequate spacing from the edge partway through the year they changed the design to the wide rim near date which became very collectible in the last forty years because people thought these were extremely scarce one of the things to me that seems to be a bit odd about that is that later production coins of of the susan b all have the wide rim so from this point on they kept the wide rim so based on it the way it works with other coins wouldn't this then be the collectible coin here's the rub on this issue coin both of these are collectible so if you want to have a complete set of susan bees there's about twenty coins all together including the varieties but you actually want one of these which is the narrow rim far date which always confuses the hell out of me but I'm getting better at it and this example of the near date because the data is so close to the nice fat rim compared to that one you can see it really clearly side-by-side which that's why I say it makes it if this is helpful for you guys if you do like these and you do want to collect them or you want to know what the difference is there it is right there okay now we're gonna move to nineteen eighty they made a ton of them in 79 nineteen eighty they only made them for collectors by for one year they made them for circulation and by the second year they were not intended for circulation similar to the Kennedy half dollars that we can still get that are made but they're not issued for circulation they're just for us collectors that want to buy them at a premium they were already doing that the second year of issue and you can see it as the wide rim this is actually a very pretty example of the coin finding these in really good grades requires some hunting because they're not out there a lot the gold dollars if you want to call them that have kind of taken their place so they're kind of hard to find if you go to coin shows if you go to coin shops if you go to eBay and buy old proof sets or mint sets you can usually find stuff like this but if you were watching the about the coins that we picked up at the recent show you know that we would grab this one because it was a really nice example and it was just above face value so it was worth grabbing but in doing the research for the video we found out that you know like I say they these were already not intended for circulation so they stopped production and people hated the coin they weren't using it it was jamming up vending machines which is this is part of the erotic history of this coin which has so many ironies is that these things were not accepted because the quarter the machines the vending machines and things were set up for quarters and they were set up for large dollars and half dollars but they weren't set up for these things and they produced them only for one year so the vending machine companies didn't want to make changes so they produced him 1980 like I said for collectors and then they stopped and they didn't make any dollar coins at all and almost ten years later actually almost twenty years later in 1999 they knew that they were coming out with the new dollar in the Sacajawea in 2000 but in 98 there was such a shortage of dollar coins the vending machine companies and the subway systems for example had switched over and we're accepting these because what they were charging to ride on the subway was more than a buck it was easier for people to throw these in there so they demanded that they start producing the coins again in between in that 20 year period the funny thing and I remember this as a kid 1993 the government did an inventory and found that they had something like 360 million of these coins that were still unproductive you know that were still in their inventory in the vaults that they couldn't get rid of here's here's the funny part is that they switched from the Ike's to these to save 30 million in production costs and they had 360 million of these in the vault they couldn't get rid of didn't exactly save money so what they did in 93 was another cost savings and a way to get rid of these was to install vending machines in the post offices that when you buy your stamps it would dispense your change and they were intentionally dispensing the susan b anthony dollars at the post offices they bought 9000 vending machines to de spend to dispense the dollar coins over a three year period from 93 to 96 they lowered the inventory from three hundred and sixty million down to two hundred and twenty nine million so they got rid of one hundred and thirty million but they still had two hundred thirty million sitting in the vault that was 96 and two years later all of a sudden the vending machine industry is screaming adam we need coins so they made the 99 and that was intended for circulation that was to make the vending machine people happy and and to make the transit people happy now as far as collectibles there are several varieties besides the 1979 wide and narrow rim there is the 79 s which is the type one filled us there's the clear s which is the type two now those are those are proofs they struck Susan be on a Sacagawea Blanc that was the first error that one that was discovered sold back in 2005 for about $12,000 so this thing was kind of a a 20 year you look in the books it says 1979 to 1999 production the problem is that production was suspended in 81 and then it was produced again in 99 so it didn't have a 20 year production run it only had about a 4 year production run and there are the same types of errors and oddities on these coins as any other coin any other denomination you have some of these that are struck on a dime planchette you have some of these that that the dime was struck on these plant jets there are quite a few that are out there where they have huge offset strikes where you know they're offset that far you know go out there hunt you might find them if you find them you might make a score Hopi Flint you found this interesting please remember to Like share subscribe there's more fillet for more
