about rare kennedy half dollars worth money kennedy half dollars are favorites for many since the first day of production and there are many super rare and super valuable issues in their series even newer kennedy half dollars are very valuable but this video is dedicated to the rarest one the u.s mint started production of kennedy in 1964. by february of 1964 the philadelphia mint struck its first kennedy half dollars for circulation while the denver mint had started already just a week earlier the 1964 kennedy half dollars were composed of ninety percent silver therefore making them a one-year type for the following years from 65 to 70 circulation strike kennedy half dollars were struck in 40 silver not everybody knows that the mint was striking 1964 kennedy's in 1965 and even later so weigh all of them it's very important if you're looking for errors on kennedy half dollars and to help you with that we're going to give you their weights so 1964 should weigh 12.50 grams from 1965 to 70 11.5 grams 1971 to now 11.34 grams 1976 silver collector coins 11.50 grams 1992 silver proofs 12.50 grams and from 2019 till now the new 0.999 silver proofs are 12.69 grams there are 1965 kennedy half dollars that have been found struck on 90 blanchets as far as we know no 64 kennedy halves were found on 40 planchets yet but as it's happened many times in the history of coins with transitional coins mistakes happen so weigh all of your kennedy half dollars now the first kennedy half dollar struck at the philadelphia mint were struck with the accented hair design and they were used to strike proof kennedy half dollars in 1964 and this variety is the first one we will cover in this video the accented hair variety displays extra hair right above kennedy's ear as opposed to a regular coin which will have less hair above the ear the accented hair variety will also be missing most of the lower left serif on the letter i of the word liberty you can see it in this picture courtesy of pcgs soon after as we said the accented hair variety was used to strike the first proof kennedy half dollars mrs kennedy requested that the accented hair variety be slightly modified so that the hair strands right above the ear on the coin would be less prominent this made the accented hair variety a one year type and even then it was only used to strike some proof kennedy halves in 1964 making them very rare we want to make clear here that this variety applies to proof coins struck at the philadelphia mint not a business strike coin so if you're looking for them you need to look at the coins finish they're bringing extra premium and every kennedy half dollar collector wishes to have one this coin you see in this picture is graded proof 68 dcam and it sold in january of 2020 at heritage auctions for 93 hundred dollars it's a very nice profit for a half dollar coin but wait there's more the next super rare kennedy half dollar is on the same year 1964. and by the way we're not going in order of the most valuable but in order of their production years in our opinion it will be much easier to remember the important dates if we go in the order they were made so the next kennedy half dollar we will present here is the 1964 kennedy half dollar with a special finish that came from the 1964 sms set now do not confuse them with the sms sets struck in 1965 66 or 67 these coins have a smooth satin-like appearance much different from the regular proof coins or business strike coins there are many different theories on why the 64 sms coins were produced one of them is that the coins could have been produced as prototypes for the 65 to 67 sms coins although it's believed these sms coins came into existence somehow through the involvement of eva adams who was the u.s mint director at the time after she passed away her estate was sold off and well recognized dealer and auctioneer lester merkin is believed to have bought many of the coins from her estate lester merkin's collection would then be sold in a stax bowers auction in the early 1990s including some if not all of the known 1964 sms coins the 1964 special strike kennedy halves are not supposed to exist however there are about a dozen or so examples which have surfaced in the past 15 years therefore it is the scarcest non-error or variety kenny half dollar to exist there has been much debate regarding whether or not these coins were originally issued in special sets since they were never in any form of specimen packaging and official special mint sets were not issued until 1965 we will share with you the two latest sales of them the first one is the coin you see in this picture it is a 1964 sms kennedy half in special proof 67 plus grade it sold in february of 2020 at stax bowers auction for 60 000 next is the 1964 sms kennedy in special proof 68 grade which is the highest known until now and this coin sold at heritage auctions in august of 2019 for 156 000 what a great coin now let's move on to the 1966 coins that year the u.s mint didn't strike proof coins nor coins with mint marks so they struck regular business strike coins and coins issued in sms sets the coin we will talk about here is the 1966 sms kennedy half dollars which are missing the designers initials many dates in the kennedy half dollar series are known to have missing initials but not many of them are super rare like this coin the sms set were struck only for three years making them a very short series among a larger one coins in a short series are always worth more than in a longer one what you're obviously looking for is no designer initials fg on the reverse of the coin this coin in grade ms 67 which is not the highest known sold at heritage auctions at the end of last year for 2 820 it's a great coin but check other kennedy half dollar coins for missing initials too moving on to the year 1970 we're looking at a 1970 d struck at the denver mint it's a very special and rare kennedy half dollar since the 1970 d kennedy half dollar was only sold in mint sets from that year but it is not a proof coin making them the first nifc or not intended for circulation coin just over 2 million coins were sold making it the lowest mintage business strike kennedy half dollar from 1964 to 2005. this coin in grade ms 67 sold at heritage auctions in october of 2020 for sixty three hundred dollars now these coins were sold in 1970 uncirculated mint sets you still can buy them on the secondary market and it might be worth doing so the highest grade is only ms-67 look for them and look for a higher grade it's very possible to find a coin in high grade in a mint set now we're moving to the 1974 kennedy half dollar struck also at the denver mint with the double die obverse or ddo the 1974 d double die obverse half dollar is a rare but very popular variety because it's fairly easy to identify with the naked eye the doubling on this variety is quite obvious on the word trust less so on in god we and liberty and the date the picture is also courtesy of pcgs the highest grade known is only ms 66 and this coin sold at heritage auctions for one thousand fifty seven dollars and the last super rare kennedy half dollar we will share with you here is a proof kennedy half the 1998 s with a special matte finish the 1998 s sms half dollar has an unusual matte finish made solely for collectors as part of a two-piece kennedy's collector set containing the half dollar and an uncirculated version of the robert f kennedy silver dollar both coins were made of 90 silver depending on the source the miniature figures are between 62 000 and 64 000 for this coin regardless of which figures correct the 1998 s sms is the rarest of all the kennedy half dollars since they were struck with special care and issued in a set many do exist in the best grade so they're not bringing super high money not the mintage but the coins population has the biggest impact on the coins price but regardless of price this is the rarest coin and you should have it in your collection if you're collecting kennedy half dollars the latest sale of this coin happened in october 2020 and this 1998 s sp70 kennedy half dollar sold at heritage auctions for 264 dollars so now you have the most rare kennedy half dollars many other rare kennedy half dollars exist in the series but we can't cover
