Hi Matt, you should check out some of Greg Egan's books. Calling them sci-fi isn't quite doing them justice.

I'd recommend starting with his Orthogonal trilogy, which is basically "what if there was no universal speed of light" and also "what if creatures could freely alter their shape as long as they preserved their mass and topology". Dichronauts is good too, which is "what if instead of having 3 spatial dimensions and 1 temporal dimension, there were 2 spatial dimensions and 2 temporal dimensions".

I think you'd enjoy Greg Egan's novels, they are well-written and mentally stimulating.

If anyone is interested, I made a Matlab script that finds the smallest superpermutation as described in the video (using the Travelling Salesman Problem).
