of the Father - the Son and of the Holy Spirit peace be with you my dear brothers and sisters what a privilege it is to be gathered tonight as we celebrate the solemnity of the most holy body and blood of Jesus when we realize what it is that we are about to receive it is an incredible and awesome mystery a mystery of love so as we entered in this Mass let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that in my thoughts and in my words what I have done what I have failed to do through my fault through my fault [Music] all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me may Almighty God have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] Kristen [Music] [Music] here [Music] let us pray well gods who in this wonderful sacrament have left us a memorial of your passion grant us we pray that we may revere the sacred mysteries of your body and blood that we may always experience in ourselves the fruits of your Redemption we live in reign with God the Father and the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever a reading from the book of Deuteronomy Moses said to the people remember how for 40 years now the Lord your God has directed all your journeying in the desert so as to test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to keep his Commandments he therefore lets you be afflicted with hunger and then fed you with manna a food unknown to you and your fathers in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the Lord do not forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt that place of slavery who guided you through the vast and terrible desert with its Seraph serpents and scorpions its parched and waterless ground who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock and fed you in the desert with manna a food unknown to your fathers the word of the Lord [Music] Oh Jerusalem [Music] he established [Music] he reveals his word [Music] a reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians brothers and sisters the cup of blessing that we bless isn't not a participation in the blood of Christ the bread that we break is it not a participation in the body of Christ because the loaf of bread is one we though many are one body for we all partake of the one loaf the word of the Lord [Music] [Music] [Music] in the land of life too [Music] [Music] [Music] I am the living bread that came down from heaven [Music] the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel according to John Jesus said to the Jewish crowds I am The Living bread that came down from heaven whoever eats this bread will live forever and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world the Jews quarreled among themselves saying how can this man give us his flesh to eat jesus said to them amen amen I say to you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you do not have life within you whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him on the last day for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him just as the living father sent me and I have life because of the father so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me this is the bread that came down from heaven unlike your ancestors who ate and still died whoever eats this bread will live forever the gospel of the Lord eighteen years ago my father was diagnosed with summer stomach cancer it was a great shock to us because he had not really shown many signs other than a certain pain and what they thought was perhaps heart issues but after further exploration they sent us to Mayo and they told us down there that there will be three parts of the surgery the goal was to be able to remove the tumor move his stomach up and to be able to attach it to his esophagus higher as we were there awaiting the response when he was in surgery they told us there would be three stages the first would they would do a general observation then they would open up to see the area to see if it had spread to the liver or not and if not then they would complete the full surgery and they would let us know at each stage so you can imagine the anticipation and the anxiety that we had waiting and wondering but also the great delights we had when they first came and said they're moving on to stage two hopes were strengthened and we waited not too much longer after that they returned and said we will be done shortly which we knew meant they would sew them back up because it was terminal and they would not continue with the surgery at 76 years of age as a farmer being so healthy we were stunned wondering how can this be why couldn't have been caught earlier the typical types of questions that we have and certainly there's a lot of mystery when we lose loved ones we never know the tape the day or the hour of course we must always be ready but one of the profound things that came out of all of that for me was a deepening understanding of my father's great love for the Holy Eucharist he would not miss Mass until he was no longer able to go then about midweek he'd say to my mother is Don coming home to celebrate Mass at home oh how that stole my heart as a priest and I was blessed to be in an assignment where I could still get home in the afternoon to offer a mass for my father and my mother and oh what privileged moments they were as he grew weaker and weaker but continuing to ask mom is Don coming home for mass I remember the last Sunday Mass we had together and he was growing weaker certainly and they were planning to bring in the hospice bed the next morning so he wouldn't have to walk so far it's a beautiful mass some close friends to celebrate with him and then I went back the next day I get a call from my family saying get home as soon as you can dad has gone unconscious and we don't expect him to live long there was a tremendous surge in my heart for one last gift for my father the gift that's the greatest of all God Himself I so desired as a priest to be able to give him what's called vaya Tacoma which means food for the journey one last time before he dies Lord would you grant that to me and so I rushed home not knowing if I would make it in time or if he'd even be conscious I'd be able to give him the real presence of Jesus in his body and blood we had the local priest come and anoint him give him the Apostolic pardon because I didn't want to miss that last opportunity if I didn't get there in time as I got home the family was gathered around the living room was crowded and I asked them to get ready to set up a table for a mass uncertain whether dad would be able to receive so filled with gratitude when there was enough movement and enough somewhat subconscious awareness and awareness that I thought I think I can do math so I celebrate Mass trying to get through it hopefully not too rushing Lord because I wanted to give him what he really wanted Jesus Jesus and his body and blood and though he was too weak to be able to receive our Lord in his real presence in his body I remember so clearly my brother and my mother helping to prop him up in the hospice bed and I remember taking the back of his neck and his had in one hand and the chalice and the other saying dad this is the blood of Christ and I remember so clearly the audio balsamic on the blood of Christ what a gift it was to give him the greatest treasure on earth at one of the most important times of course in his life when he's ready to meet God knowing that he's so longed it was so faithful in his attendance at Mass and receiving the Holy Eucharist simple humble farmer but a great hearts and a great love it's these words of the gospel today which reminded me of that beautiful and powerful reality of the Word of God Jesus is teaching in the gospel of course the Jews about his real presence and he says this to them amen amen I say to you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you do not have life within you whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him the last day has eternal life opening the doors of heaven for those who receive the gift of faith and believe the reality of what they receive we receive no longer ordinary bread and wine when it's transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit and the person of Jesus at every mass it's the blood of our Lord it's his body to nourish us in our journey on our way to heaven god only knows of course if today is our viatical we never know when the Lord will call us home but may we always be ready always longed for that beautiful gift which my father witnessed so beautifully to me and which has strengthened my own longing to receive the Holy Eucharist and all of you dear souls who have shared in letters and comments how hard it has been when i suspended masses and how that weighed on my own heart because i love you my flock because god gave me that love and i want nothing but the best for you i want eternal life for you and I'm so glad that you're able to start coming back to mass and as we keep striving to move more and more back towards normal so that you can receive the greatest gift on earth the gift of god himself and the sacramental life of the church in a particular in his body in his blood but I also realized that faith is not easy for everybody there's questions and doubts which are normal in life for we here even in that second reading how there were questions the gospel the Jewish the Jews quarreled among themselves saying how can this man give us his flesh to eat Saint Paul uses this rhetorical way of saying it the cup of blessing that we bless is it not a participation in the blood of Christ yes it is the bread that we break is it not a participation in the body of Christ yes it is today as you come forward may our men be profound and strong I believe Jesus I believe I believe in one God the Father Almighty of all things visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God born of the father before God we got Khanh substantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again in the third day in accordance with the Scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son with the father in the size who has spoken through the prophets I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins I look forward to the resurrection life of the world to come as we prepare ourselves for the gift of the Holy Eucharist of Jesus body and blood we acknowledge our great need for him in the many ways and so we placed before him now these prayers petitions for the church the body of Christ that she may be sign and sacrament of Christ's presence on earth during these challenging times we pray to the Lord there Christians everywhere might have an intensified devotion to the body of Christ in the Eucharist for the sanctification of the world we pray to the Lord for peace and justice in our world in our nation and in our city the different viewpoints and perspectives might be joined together and dialogue for the good of all people no matter what race color or religion we pray to the Lord for the business community and the farming community that during these challenging times God's benevolence will help them to continue to move forward as stewards of commerce and creation we pray to the Lord for our police officers who protect us at home and our servicemen and women who protect us abroad we pray to the Lord for the sick the suffering and the dying for the lonely the depressed and the grieving for the incarcerated and the addicted for all who cry out to Jesus for healing physically emotionally or spiritually that the Eucharistic Christ would transform their sorrow into joy we pray to the Lord Heavenly Father and your good and gracious love you sent us your son Jesus who in turn left us with the Holy Eucharist before he left this world so that we might be able to be spiritually nourished with his real presence in his body in his blood this day we ask that you hear and grant these prayers according to your holy will that we may be drawn ever more closely to the image and likeness of you especially through the Holy Eucharist we ask this through Christ our Lord [Music] [Music] Brahe brothers and sisters a my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty father grant your church Oh Lord we pray the gifts of unity and peace whose signs are to be seen in mystery in the offerings we hear presents through Christ our Lord the Lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the Lord our God it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks Lord Holy Father Almighty and eternal God through Christ our Lord for he is the true and eternal priest who instituted the pattern of an everlasting sacrifice and was the first to offer himself as the saving victim commanding us to make this offering as his memorial as we eat his flesh that was sacrificed for us we are made strong and as we drink his blood that was poured out for us we are washed clean and so with angels and archangels with Thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] you are indeed holy O Lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our Lord Jesus Christ by the power and the working of the Holy Spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the Sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore O Lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our Lord Jesus Christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries fraud the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of My Blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me mystery of faith [Music] therefore O Lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in Thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with His Holy Spirit may become one body one spirit in Christ he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the Most Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God with blessed Joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints and whose constant intercession your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray O Lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant Francis our Pope and me your unworthy servant the order of
