family and for everybody watching online thanks for letting me be a part of your day and i hope jesus gets bigger the cross works better the resurrection is central and scriptures get bigger not smaller um if you're the type let's follow actual bible romans chapter five i'm gonna get there in just a second um on your way out tonight if i could just take a second and talk about our resources out there we have we have a small resource table set up only new stuff from the last two years um is out there the reason we do that is because we make a lot of money from it the reason we do that is because we live with a conviction that we're not simply called to go to heaven when we die we're called to bring heaven to every place we see hell here so a hundred percent of every profit we make from that over the last decade we've given to the poor and the afflicted we have three children's homes in china to look after children with mental disabilities two and henyang one in chiang sha we also have a rescue home in cape town that gets girls out of the sex industry off drugs high school educated and job trained so we could do our part in breaking the cycle of poverty in the cape flats and so if you step out say hello to to robert and taylor and keith and janelle out there they'll be glad uh they'll be glad to help you everything's in audio video and usbs so that we can make a difference around the world now i might have bitten off a little bit more than i could chew tonight we're going to find out 38 minutes here's my goal my goal is that you will all understand the entire bible in 38 minutes in five words so we're going to understand the entire bible in five words through 38 minutes we're also going to understand how revolutionary of an idea of the cross was and why jesus matters so much all of that in 38 minutes and i am going to need your help to do it because social scientists tell me you'll forget 99 of everything i say by wednesday that is incredibly depressing because i've worked hard on this but if i get you to participate with me you're gonna remember a whole whole whole lot of it and so my goal is is that everybody within the sound of my voice tonight by 38 minutes you will understand the entire bible through five words you'll understand why the cross was so revolutionary and why jesus matters so much and ultimately i want you to love the bible more and i want you to love jesus more so that we can respond and say our next yes with god this is romans chapter 5 verse 8 but god demonstrates his love for us in this while we were still sinners christ died for us undoubtedly a revolutionary statement that that jesus was not murdered by an angry god to rescue the world from an angry god rather god was in christ showing the world how much he loved the world a revolutionary statement what paul claims there is that god acted first this was a revolutionary claim amongst all religions in the world at that time every other religion in the world god would act but you had to act first you went to that god's temple that god's place did that god's ritual and that god's posture paid that god's offering and then maybe that god would respond to your action but not the god revealed in christ the god revealed to christ showed us that he loved us by taking all the risk and acting first the god revealed in christ humbly consented in love to us and then waits humbly for our mutual consent back this was a revolutionary concept that has its massive place in history to understand just how revolutionary this concept is we have to understand the entire historical arc of the story i'm going to say something in one statement that it's going to sound very academic do not panic i'm going to restate it simpler and then i'm going to restate it after that real simple okay here i know here is the academic version of the statement ready the bible is not a static record of god the bible is a dynamic progressive moving revelation of god leading to the final revelation of god in the risen christ here's a simple way to say that that although god never changed the way people related to god thought about god pictured god the way they thought god was changed and what the bible does is it gives us a beautiful dynamic flowing narrative by which although god never changed the people's understanding of how god was shifted dynamically sometimes in small blips and sometimes in giant leaps let's state it even more simple that although god never changed the more people understood about god the closer he got and the more people understood about god the nicer he got and that's good news because if god is getting closer and meaner that would be bad news but when the more you understand about god the closer he gets and the nicer he gets that would be good news you guys ready to go all right to understand the whole thing we got to go back to abraham and abraham lived in a place called ancient sumeria ancient babylonian area okay now in abraham's day where did god live there was no temple there was no scriptures you didn't know anything about god okay so in abraham's day if you ask somebody where does god live the answer was up all right so for the rest of the sermon here's what we're going to do when i say in abraham's day god lived we're going to all with some gusto say up and do our thumb like that all right so we're going to practice to find our rhythm in this okay so ready here we go in abraham's day god lived up okay that's almost perfect just 10 more gusto and 10 more together ready here we go ready here we go abraham's day god lived up exactly that exactly that that's our rhythm so one more practice of that rhythm because that's going to follow us throughout the whole sermon okay in abraham's day god lived up yeah he lived up in the sky now we know from the bible that abraham was a sun worshiper was he a bad guy no think about it if your concept of god is god lives up in the sky and you walk out during the day and you look up in the sky what's obviously the most powerful thing in the sky the sun so the logic was well that must be god obviously here's the problem every day the sun sets so where did god go so if you go out during the night you look up this guy what's obviously the most powerful thing in the sky the moon so the idea was is that the sun was the god of the day and the moon was the god of the night but the sun must be more powerful than the moon until by observation because you can look right at the moon they worked out that the mon the moon goes through a very predictable 28-day cycle new moon waxing waning full moon new moon waxing waning full moon every 28 days new moon waxing waning full moon so the moon renews itself every 28 days which led them to this observation what else in creation operates on a 28-day cycle women half the room should know this right i can see the guy in the back going hey billy what's he talking about man okay that's women women operate on a 28-day you know that thing that happens roughly every month right if it doesn't you panic you go to the chemist shop that that's a 28-day cycle so here was the logic the moon must be the god of fertility and the god controlling the women's moods how powerful is this moon so when the new moon when the full moon is out you better get out of the cave but when the new moon comes it's going to be a better night tonight that is the idea that when abraham worshiped the sun during the day and the moon during the night and then the stars were all the sub gods but for right now i just want you to remember that in abraham's day god lived up abraham's day god lived up and if you're an ancient sumerian farmer what do you desperately need to come out of the sky so that you will live rain and the idea was is since the gods live in the sky the gods control the rain and if they're happy they'll send rain and if they're upset they'll withhold the rain and we will die and if they're really ticked off they'll send lots of rain and will die a lot all right so so the question then is what must we do to please the gods of the sky we'll get to that in just a second for right now all i want you to remember is in abraham's day god lived up 430 years later a guy named moses comes along and moses is like no god doesn't live up that's ridiculous god lives in a tent because that's less ridiculous so moses builds this tent it's 45 foot long 15 foot high 15 foot wide covered in animal hair and he said no god doesn't live in the sky he's not inaccessible like far away in the sky he's in a tent in the middle of camp but he's still inaccessible you can't you're not allowed to go in there if you go in there you'll die of course there's no record of that ever happening as a matter of fact it was a mobile tent so they had to set it up and tear it down all the time so what happened if you had to put the stake in the last holy of holy steak you know what'd you get like a 60-second alarm like get out of there i don't know but i know this when you consciously move god from far away in the sky to a tent in the middle of camp that is a good move god is getting closer so for the rest of the sermon when i say in moses's day god lived in a tent yeah in moses state god lived in a tent and we're gonna point like this okay let's try that again all right in abraham's day god lived up moses day he lives in a tent abraham's day god lived up moses day lived in a tent then years later david comes along and dave is like no god doesn't live in a tent that's ridiculous god needs his own building because that's less ridiculous so what david had a problem david was the head of state so when david went to other countries and visited other kings the other kings would show david their god's temple then when that king showed up in israel they'd say where's your god's temple david and dave is like it's in a tent over there david said this is embarrassing if the pagans can build their god's temples to their honor what's wrong with us and if those guys ever think they're god's strong enough they'll attack us no we need to give glory to our god by building him a temple now i understand solomon finished it but for tonight we're going to say in david's day god lived in a temple all right so let's practice ready in abraham's day god lived up moses day he lived in a tent david's day he lives in a temple and years later jesus comes along and they started saying things about jesus that were frankly revolutionary like and the word became flesh and dwelt amongst us in other words their description of jesus was the presence of god we were told was in a building is now walking around teaching us how to live he's willing to eat with us drink with us he's willing to hug us he's willing to touch us so see abraham you had no idea where god was he was up in the sky moses he was in a tent but still inaccessible david in a temple but still inaccessible now this god revealed in christ has put on flesh and blood and is willing to move into our neighborhood and teach us how to live see so for the rest of sermon when i say in jesus day god lived in flesh all right so we're going to tap our hands and say flesh all right so let's practice in abraham's day god lived up moses day he lived in a tent david's day he lived in a temple and jesus day lives in flesh god's getting closer the bible's not a static record of god the bible is a dynamic progressive moving revelation of god leading to the final revelation of god the risen christ in other words in the same library books the bible you have this beautiful awesome flowing narrative from somebody that thought god lived in the sky to somebody who thought god was closer in a tent to somebody who thought god was closer than that in a temple to actually the god revealed in christ was willing to be amongst us and teach us how to live god is getting closer but then the rest of the new testament actually makes an even more radical claim it says things like this don't you know that you are the temple of the living god in other words the same presence of god that was relegated to the holy of holies is now in us so for the rest of the sermon when i say in paul's day god lived in and we're going to do our hands like this because it's very important that we stay conscious that it's not just about me it's about us so in paul's day god lived in us let's review in abraham's day god lived up moses day lived in a tent david's day lived in a temple and jesus day lives in flesh by paul's day he lives in us god's getting closer closer and closer and closer the whole bible in eight minutes five words up tent temple flesh us that's only part of the story the other part of the story is that the more they understood about god the closer he got and and this is the better news the nicer he got so let's go back to abraham with that original amount of gusto okay everybody ready in abraham's day god lived up now we need rain and to get rain we got to appease the gods of the sky we've got to do something so that they'll be happy with us and then they'll send rain here's the problem there was no scriptures there was no verses there was no anything and so in abraham's day what did you have to do to please god so if you ask somebody hey it hasn't rained in a while god must be ticked off what must i do to please god the answer was and i'm going to show it to you and we're going to do it together the answer was yeah i don't know all right so let's practice that in abraham's day what you have to do to please god go yeah i don't know okay lots more gusto let's try that again okay in abraham's day what you have to do to please god yeah i don't know i don't know and what do you do if you don't owe you make it up and if you make it up with enough gusto it gets some tractions here's what they said they said you can please god by self-mutilating by cutting yourself so if it hasn't rained it well you've obviously take god off and you can get right with god sir by cutting yourself now here's the problem right the problem with that is if i say we can all get right with god by cutting what's our question what must i cut and more importantly how much of what was must i cut and the answer was everybody together yeah i don't know so what if you did 10 cuts but the magic number was 11. so in one sect of ancient sumerian culture they said just cut till it rains right that's how you know you've done enough the second thing they said you could do to please god is to sacrifice again that's a problem right if i say hey we could get right with god by sacrifice what's your question what must i sacrifice and more importantly how much of what must i sacrifice and the answer was everybody together yeah i don't know so what they did is they just started sacrificing more and more and more and more and more and more until somebody got wise to this and they said listen the gods of the sky cannot possibly reject us if we give our best so here's what we're going to do we're all going to offer our firstborn children as a sacrifice to the gods of the sky to ensure that they're pleased with us and will give us rain so in abraham's day in order to please god you didn't know how much to cut and you didn't know how much to sacrifice so you sacrificed your own son now this is where the story gets good it's in that historical context that god meets abraham and he says abraham hello my name is el shaddai i love the grace of god with abraham he meets abraham exactly where abraham thinks the story is if you don't listen anything else i say hear me say this god is always humble enough to meet the broken story where the broken story thinks it is and then moves it forward to a better narrative right he says hello abraham my name is el shaddai i am god almighty el shaddai just means god almighty in other words you've got a bunch of gods you've got to be wondering who's in charge that's me right abraham's response is basically great at least you're talking what do you want from us el shaddai and remember in that day what did they think god wanted self-mutilation and sacrifice so el shaddai says to abraham well i want you to self-mutilate if you think you need to self-mutilate i'm going to meet you in that story exactly where you think i am i want you to self-mutilate so el shaddai says abraham i want you to circumcise yourself with a rock which is an odd command to a 90 year old man pick up a rock swing hard don't miss that's crazy right have you ever seen a 90 year old man his hand shakes his eyesight's not real good you imagine it hey betty say a prayer for me sweetheart i'm gonna try like this could go really really bad see for us we hear the word circumcision and we think what law barbaric ridiculous right mean right think about it in that day going forward how was circumcision the most gracious thing ever said up to that time well in abraham's day how many cuts did you have to do i don't know so god says hey if you think you need to cut fine let's cut but here's what we're going to do we're going to circumcise why is that important and why is that gracious well think about it this is ninth grade anatomy class how many times can you possibly circumcise yourself the answer is people i don't know what once right like if you could circumcise yourself twice you demand i don't know right right so god engages abraham's story and he moves it from infinite cutting to one off god's getting nicer second command to abraham abraham i want you to kill your kid what a weird that is a weird command isn't it like honestly that is just straight if i said look you've offended god and you can get it right by killing your kid you'd be like what why hell what did i smoke what's going no no no god says to abraham i want you to kill your kid and abraham's response is like seems reasonable right no worries he doesn't ask why he doesn't ask how why because in abraham's world that's what they thought god wanted god is engaging the narrative where the narrative thinks it is and he's moving it to something better so abraham takes isaac to a high place think about it why would you go to a high place because where does god live up right so you go to a high place to get closer he goes to kill isaac and for the first time in the history of any recorded instance from any culture of any civilization of anywhere in the world god in god god stops the sacrifice and he provides a new one and here's the idea hey abraham i got an idea instead of killing children let's kill animals instead well hang on if you're the first person to get the idea that we can kill animals instead of children is that a good move or a bad move that's a really good move is that a word from god you better believe it is that inspired absolutely is that the final word of god no the final word of god's the risen christ but that's a giant leap in the right direction abraham comes down off the mountain with isaac still alive his neighbors panic oh abram get back up there it's not nice but we had to do it our granddaddy's had to do it our great granddaddy's had to do it we've all had to do it everybody has to kill their kid you're gonna bring a drought on the land abram's like no i've got a new revelation of god and god's nicer than we all thought instead of killing children we could kill animals the talmud tells the rest of the story from history it says that abraham was so moved by the compassion of god to kill animals instead of kids that he finally got enough guts he took an axe and he had a room full of idols and he took an axe and he destroyed all the idols in his room full of idols except one and he left that one standing and he put the axe in his hand so the next day when abraham's dad came into worship he saw the carnage and he said abraham what happened in here and abraham said i don't know there must have been a fight amongst the gods and that one must have won so abraham leaves because he's got a better revelation of god abraham's god was named el shaddai with some gusto i want everybody to say that with me ready go el shaddai let's try that again a little bit more gusto go el shaddai abraham has a son named isaac who's his god el shaddai isaac has a son named jacob who's his god el shaddai jacob has 12 children who's their god el shaddai 12 children have 12 children who's their god el shaddai 144 kids have 12 kids who's their god el shaddai the math is getting too hard who is their god el shaddai 20 generations later there is no god but el shaddai no other name other than el shaddai it's in our verses it's in our pamphlets it's in our websites it's in our fundamental truths there is no god but then moses comes along and moses is a premeditated murdering fugitive i looked this way and that and seeing no one i killed the man and hid him in the sand problem was the next day the sand shifted you got this leg sticking up out of the sand he ends up in exile out in the wilderness and god chooses to meet him now moses grew up in a place called pharaoh's house and in pharaoh's house the sun was god i'm not tricking you what's the sun made of fire so moses thinks god is a fire a fire that if you take it off it'll consume you so how does god meet moses as a fire in other words if you think i'm a fire i'll meet you as a fire i will meet you exactly where the broken narrative told you i am and i'll move it forward to a better story but if you're paying attention it's a different kind of fire it was a refining fire that's not even harming the most flammable thing in the desert a dry bush as the great ts eliot said we only sustain only saspire consumed by either fire or fire that you will live your whole life terrified of the consuming fire of the sun god ra or by faith you'll embrace the refining fire of a loving yahweh who although he will perfect you he will never harm you for the bush was not consumed so moses stands in front of the burning bush the burning bush says hello moses i am the god of abraham isaac and jacob what does moses say remember he says oh hello el shaddai i should probably take my shoes off the burning bush says no i introduced myself to abraham isaac and jacob as el shaddai but by my name you'd have hey they didn't know me moses argues with a talking bush and he says no the god of abraham isaac of jacobs el shaddai everybody knows that it's in our verses it's in our pamphlets it's on our websites to send our fundamental truths that's what we've been taught our whole life the burning bush reiterates i introduced myself to them as el shaddai but i'm teaching you a new name you'd hey vav hey it's very confusing because if you know anything about hebrew you know you can't say that those letters don't go together you would have hey are four letters that do not go together it'd be like me saying my name is come again hey bob hey what you and evolv it's not even a word i know i know my name is jude what's that mean it means i am what i am right that clears it up so moses goes back to the israelites and here's his message ready hey i know you've been taught your whole life that god's name is el shaddai but i've had a new revelation of god and his name isn't just el shaddai it's also you de hey how well do you think that went not well jewish history tells us they rejected moses until he brought water out of the rock once he bought water out of the rock they were like he's probably on to something right but you wouldn't have bought it either think about it hey i know you've been taught your whole life god's name is el shaddai but his name is also yute vavavave what yo de vav hey moses that's not even a word i know i know he told me his name jude vave all right moses where'd he tell you this in the wilderness was anybody else there to witness this no howdy tell you moses talking bush which leads to this observation right moses is inspired by this yahweh to write the kindest book about god ever written in the history of the world up to the time the name of that book was leviticus why is leviticus the nicest book about god ever written in the history of the world up to the time it was written because up to that time how much did you have to sacrifice i don't know how much you have to mutilate i don't know leviticus goes enough of that we're putting limits on this here's what we're gonna do we're gonna circumcise on the eighth day that way no one remembers it and then i forbid you from ever putting markings on your body ever again trust me he never thought we'd sit around and argue whether or not it's a sin to have a tattoo this is about people wondering how much do i have to mutilate myself for god and moses is like are you kidding none we're gonna circumcise on the eighth day and that's it no more cutting so moses day how much did you have to mutilate once then he says sacrifice one sacrifice per family per year and you can know that you're perfectly okay with god so in moses's day how much did you have to sacrifice once how much did you have to mutilate once god's getting nicer let's review with a whole lot of original gusto everybody ready here we go in abraham's day god lived up how much have to sacrifice i don't know how much have you mutilate i don't know moses day he lives in a tent how much you have to sacrifice once how much you have to mutilate once in david's day god lived in a temple the rules don't change how much you have to sacrifice once how much you have to mutilate once then then a group of people called the prophets come along and the prophets start calling this stuff out a little bit it's not that they're mad at it they're like we think the story's better like a guy named micah micah's like what kind of a god is grumpy and then gets less grumpy because you killed a bird that doesn't make much sense just do justly love mercy walk humbly with god and i think god's gonna be okay of course he was too far ahead of himself and they killed him that's what happens jesus rescue jesus references that in matthew 23 he's like you who stone the prophets in other words the ones you realize are prophets today are the ones you killed yesterday you're fixing to kill me it's gonna all be okay anyway so that's the way that sort of worked let's review with some gusto ready in abraham's day god lived up how much you have to sacrifice i don't know how much have to mutilate i don't know moses day he lives in a tent how much you have to sacrifice once how much have to mutilate once and david's day he lives in a temple sacrifice once mutilate once and then in jesus day god lived in flesh then the god revealed in christ started making god nicer than anybody ever thought possible check this out he started calling people forgiven without a sacrifice is jesus allowed to do that oh my goodness okay i practice this okay so if i ask you if jesus is allowed to do something the answer is yes all right let's practice that right is jesus allowed to do that so there's this one time there's this guy named his name is that kias he's up a tree you know and jesus tells the whole crowd to stop and he says is he is hey you come down i wanna eat with you and it says zacchaeus was so moved by the compassion of jesus he said hey here and now i'll give half of what i have to the poor and jesus said that's it salvation has come to your house is jesus allowed to do that no sacrifice no temple visit no altar call no romans 10 9-10 i know it surprises some people that anyone got saved before the book of romans was written but they did think about it what was the only way to be saved in the first century temple ritual who's not allowed in the temple tax collectors so what do you do if your job forbidded you from entrance to the only way one can be saved jesus circumvents the entire system of oppressive power he sees his heart change and he says that's consent that's heart change i'll meet you the rest of the way salvation has come to this house [Applause] there's this one time it says that jesus went by a prostitute's house which leads to all kinds of questions like is jesus allowed to do that and what was going on at a prostitute's house in the first century business jesus is between customers which leads to this question would there be a worse place to ever run into jesus ever you imagine that like jesus is between customers and the guy comes out of the back room and he's like oh jesus hey man was just here to use the toilet and it says that the prostitute was so moved by his compassion that she knelt down and wiped his feet with her hair and jesus says that's it all your sins are now forgiven is jesus allowed to do that yes no sacrifice no temple visit no altar call no sinner's prayer no romans 10 9-10 she wiped his feet with her hair what was the only way for that that lady to be saved in the first century temple ritual who's not allowed in the temple prostitutes jesus circumvents the entire system of oppressive power he sees her heart changing he says that's enough for me all your sins are now forgiven see it's one thing to say jesus is the only way true it's a whole nother thing to say my way to jesus is the only way to jesus right like this lady came to jesus by wiping his feet with her hair aren't you glad that's not the rule like thoma myself all my ball brothers in the room you know like with all respect to you guys for you to wipe his feet with your hair it'd be a three-man job you'd have to be turned upside down and used like a buffer you know what you find in the god revealed in christ is a god that is willing to meet you every step of the way in consent first and humbly wait for yours there's this one time there's this chaotic scene jesus is preaching in a full house and it says a paralyzed guy couldn't get in it was too packed so his friends took him to the roof cut a hole in the roof and lowered him down in this is chaotic i don't care how good of a communicator you are someone repels from the ceiling it is over if a bird flew in here right now i couldn't quite keep control the room this guy gets lowered in and then jesus says something radical it says and jesus saw the faith of his friends and proclaimed his sins forgiven what is jesus allowed to do that yes okay i'm a bit more gusty is jesus allowed to do that so is the god revealed in christ calling people forgiven because of someone else believing for them what you say shane my goodness you know paul later said it's the faith of a saved wife that can save her unbelieving husband is paul allowed to say that yes somebody was listening to me do this one time and they said what are you saying shane what are you saying you're saying you go to heaven by marrying the right woman okay first of all if that's your question you have missed my point entirely right can you go to heaven by marrying the right woman i have no idea i do know if you marry the wrong one you'll live in hell today that's a fact you say shane how far do you take that i don't know i actually don't know is it essential that every person consents and participates to the work of the risen christ in their life yes but if you're a mom and you're believing for your unbelieving children right now you keep doing that somehow jesus sees that stuff there's this one time jesus is having a really bad day and he ends up on a cross that's a bad day and the guy next to him is having an equally bad day he's on a cross too and neither one of them can breathe like it just suffocates you so the guy next to jesus can only get three words out and his three words are please remember me and what does jesus say that's it today you will be with me in paradise aren't you glad jesus didn't make everybody get saved one way imagine that please remember me well bo you better hurry up and say the sinner's prayer they're not going to think you're saved in 2021. sinner's prayer what's that it's this prayer they make up in 1830 to help people connect with me and i dig it what's it based on it's based on romans 10 9-10 what's romans a book that hasn't been written yet but you better hurry up what was the only way for the thief to be saved in the first century temple ritual he'd had to get off the cross run to the temple find a priest to offer him sacrifice come back get up on the cross jesus circumvents the entire system of oppressive power he sees the man's heart change and he says that's enough for me so in jesus day how much did you have to sacrifice none how much did you have to mutilate none the god revealed in christ was nicer than anybody thought possible ever [Applause] let's review with a whole lot of gusto everybody ready here we go abraham's day god lived up sacrifice well i don't know mutilate i don't know moses day he lives in a tent sacrifice once mutilate once david's day god lived in a temple sacrifice once mutilate once in jesus day god lived in flesh sacrifice none mutilate none and that is good news then in paul's day god lives in us and paul's day god lives in us the rest of the new testament makes it even more profound six different places by four different authors it says that jesus did not simply die at calvary he died before the foundation of the world in other words jesus did not inaugurate a new reality he simply showed you what god was always like all along the story is never that god is grumpy and then he hurt his own son and now he's fundamentally kind that is not the story at all the story is god is like jesus exactly like jesus god had always been like jesus we did not know that but now we do and it says that what was true at calvary did not inaugurate a new reality it simply manifested what god was always like if you need verses for everything here you go ephesians 1 4 he was chosen before the foundation of the world first peter 1 20. he was crucified before the foundation of the world but in these last days was made manifest so you could see it hebrews 4 3 his sacrificial work was completed before the foundation world second timothy 1 9. your salvation was given to you and jesus christ before the foundation of the world revelation 13 8 blessed are those whose names are found written in the book of the lamb who was slain before the foundation of the world the entire first chapter first john for we know that all these things have been true since before the foundation of the world but in these last days we have now seen it with our own two eyes and my personal favorite hebrews chapter 9. didn't you know all along it was impossible for the blood of sacrifices to take away your sin but god let you do it because your conscience thought you needed to in other words god always meets the broken story where the broken story thinks it is and moves it forward didn't you know all along it was impossible for the blood of sacrifices to take away your sin but god let you do it because your conscience needed to be appeased for don't you know that jesus died before the foundation of the world at the culmination of the ages i love that the culminate does that sound like a jewish theological principle no that sounds like a rock festival where'd you go last weekend i went to the culmination of the ages it was awesome in other words the new testament claimed that jesus did not inaugurate a new reality he simply physically manifested what god was always like that god is like jesus exactly like jesus god had always been like jesus and he loved his creation enough to fix it before in other words jesus did not die to fix a problem he died to obliterate the idea there ever was a problem jesus did not die to change god's mind about you jesus died to change to change to change your mind about god and that's two different things and by the way that's the only thing that makes christianity make any sense if that's not true then this is what the gospel sounds like ready here we go please never present the gospel this way here we go the gospel in one paragraph if that's not true ah god created the world and even though he was god he lacked the foresight to foresee human rebellion so when humans rebelled it sort of surprised him and he had to rack his god brain as to what to do and even though he was god his best idea was to torture and kill his only son by sending to earth on a suicide mission and even though the son obeyed the suicide mission it was still horribly unsuccessful because billions of people are still going to burn in hell forever with no hope of ever getting out and god never gets what he wants anyway join us what no the good news is better than that here we go that that in the beginning god created the world because he was god he was able to foresee human rebellion and instead of destroying creation he loved his creation enough to fix the whole broken thing from the beginning but his creation wouldn't believe it without seeing it so he showed him over and over and over again how much he loved him ultimately manifesting in the death of the risen christ by entering into the broken narrative allowing the broken narrative to kill and to show the broken narrative this is how much i love you so my brothers and sisters may we present a more christ-like god and a more christ-like gospel let's review one more time with a whole heap of gusto everybody ready in abraham's day god lived up sacrifice i don't know mutilate i don't know moses day he lived in a tent sacrifice once mutilate once david's day lived in a temple sacrifice once mutilate once jesus day god lived in flesh sacrifice none mutilate none in paul's day god lives in us and when was it all true before the foundation of the world so my brothers and sisters of kingdom city and everybody watching online may you be people who consent and participate not because jesus was saving us from an angry god but rather god was in christ showing us all how much he loved us and may we mutually consent back may we never revert to an older way to see god but may we realize that god is like jesus exactly like jesus god had always been like jesus and now we fully know that and may we so connect to the risen christ that it goes so far past belief and to a place where jesus fundamentally forms the way we see the whole world and may our life be a living epistle to all who read it of what it's like to be connected to what happened before the foundation of the world at the culmination of the ages let me pray for us all so lord we love you we honor you we proclaim your king and there's none like you when we just quiet our spirit and if you're here tonight and you're like man i can feel god moving in my heart i want to i want to say yes to that let me define what that is before the foundation of the world god was writing your story and what you've experienced is some sort of counter narrative a story we've written on our own and what we call salvation is when we true when we choose to put our faith and our trust in god's version of our life story instead of the one we've been writing on our own and it's not that god is that jesus is saving you from an angry god it's god is in christ calling you to surrender to that story and if that's you tonight you'd like to say yes if you're watching online you could just put your hand over your heart in some sort of response if if you're here in the room if you could just lift your hand and let me know you're responding so that so that i could pray for you if you could just lift your head and say you know what tonight's my night i want to trust jesus's version of my life story instead of the one i've been writing on my own if that's you just lift your hand now just right over here i see that yep that's great that's so that's so good anybody else anybody else right back here yep i see that anybody else right over here there you go good anybody else we just celebrate that with you we celebrate that with you now if you need words to say i'll give you some words to say but it's the response more than it is any word but words help us you could say something like this lord jesus tonight i'm choosing to put my faith and my trust in your version of my life story instead of the one i've been writing my own and i surrender to your lordship would you be a part of my life and write my story with me and hold it together amen would you look this way thanks so much for being a part of your day i hope jesus got bigger the cross work better the resurrection is so real i hope that you understand the whole bible in five words that god is getting closer and god is getting nicer so may all of our lives show the whole world what it is like to be connected with what's true before the foundation of the world at the culmination of the ages grace and peace everybody wow what a word you know the bible says that god is the same yesterday today and forever so while it's not true that he's actually getting nicer because he's always been as nice as he is to you and to me our understanding of who he is he's kinder than you think he's more loving than you know and he's closer than you would ever appreciate so i hope that word not only enlarged and stretched your ability to believe in how good your god is but it actually draws you closer and i want to declare over your life this week that even if it's possible on zuma in the room you join a connect group and be a part of it i want to let you know that shane willard and i will be having conversations over the next four connect groups and so the next four connect groups are going to be discussions i have with him around things that are absolutely not only topical but i promise you will not only engage you so invite a friend invite someone if you prayed that prayer that he invited you to pray and in essence you said lord jesus i want your narrative for my life i want to encourage you like i did earlier connect with someone let someone know the devil's greatest weapon against you if he can't stop you from opening your heart to god is to close it from anyone else so open your heart to someone else share what god is doing in your life and let's continue to believe that no matter where in the world you are the best is still yet to come and you know i think it would be only fitting that we enjoy and end today's service with an incredible praise song live love loud so why don't we join our worship team as we celebrate come on wherever in the world you are there's faith to enjoy there's faith to celebrate live love loud god bless you have an incredible week and we will see you soon [Music] i will never forget every word that he says [Music] [Music] show all the
