pray protection special of our young people who are standing up for justice who are standing up speaking truth to power God protect all of those who are going out into the streets and protesting only 4 jours Floyd but for the hundreds of years of injustice towards black bodies and God even as we protest now we know that we are still in the midst of a pandemic so God we ask your protection and your keeping power over those who are still on the front lines those who are still putting their lives on the line to go to the hospital's to to clean to to to see about others we asked that you cook them month's rent god we ask not only that you show up but that you show up within us that we stand up and we call out humanity for the evil that humanity is portraying on our people so God we lift up this branch of Zion called island temple once again God allow her to keep her light shining in the midst of a dark world God thank you for sustaining her in the midst of everything God in the midst of these 100 years in God we thank you for the pastor of this church continue to strengthen her katene to give her a vision then will move us forward in righteousness and in justice God we thank you for worship and God we will be so careful to give your name the untangle or that is so rightfully deserves for it is in the name of that God who created us is in the name of the Christ who was crucified and resurrected for us and in the name of that holy spirit that comforts us even now all of God's children said amen [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yeah [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] good morning Alan temple I am Reverend dr. Jacqueline a Thompson senior pastor here down at Temple Baptist Church and I'm hoping that this service comes to you and finds you safe and healthy and well this is the day that the Lord is made and we will rejoice and be glad in it I am NOT live in the sanctuary for those of you who know me you know that I've had a little problem with my knee but I got a procedure then this week that we're believing God will be helpful and so I couldn't stand very long so we're gonna have a throwback sermon if you will but before we get to the Word of God I just wanted to extend a warm welcome and help me celebrate our new members we are so happy to welcome to the fold with us Terry Lynn Thomas Shay Rodgers Linda Brown and Samantha shape Chapman I believe I got that right Chapman Samantha Chapman so we want to welcome each of you to our fellowship we are so happy that you have become a part of us even in the midst of a pandemic God is expanding our fold and we're happy about that I also want to share with you there by the time you all see this we will have done over 3,000 tests on our site we are excited about that and we want to make sure that more of us people of color are being tested so I'm encouraging you and asking you please encourage those if they are working on the frontlines if they're out if they're exposed even you come by be tested we wanted to provide access in the community for people of color so please share that information with them and I also wanted to give a special thank you to our Allen temple mask crew we are grateful to sister Rochelle and her company of mask makers who this past Tuesday in addition to us feeding they went out as far as 73rd and Hagan burger giving out masks and hand sanitizer to those who were in need and so we are so excited that ministry is still going for it we are still trying to be a blessing not only to you through worship but to the community and to all of God's people and so as we're dealing with the struggles and the death of George Floyd and so many others Brianna Taylor the list goes on and on and on and protests are still occurring in the street as they should let's be clear about that just bring awareness to issues that need to be addressed but at the same time we don't want to get stuck there sometimes we just need enough lifting word of god so we're gonna have a throwback from a familiar face someone who has been in this fight in a struggle for a very long time and I pray that your hearts are encouraged and I pray that you are blessed I love you much and I'll see you soon this is no time to play to dream to drift we have hard work to do and loath to lift shun not to struggle struggle I tell you is the gift be strong brothers and sisters I greet you the name of the Christ this morning I am elated to stand on this February morning brothers and sisters in Oakland California it's always good to be in Wakanda [Music] [Applause] thank you praise God for your pastor come on let's put our hands together for pastor Jackie we thank and praise God for leadership leadership of this congregation I know that the hours late there is so much to be said on the National Front and the international front I appreciate the pros that came forth from the laity today understanding in a real way the real people of the Diaspora in a very real way that somebody told a lie one day we've been caught up in a dream we've been caught up in a vile misconception that starts us off and tells our children that they were liberated out of the jungles of Africa and that they are on a track toward civilization this is detrimental it is detrimental to the future but it is detrimental to our common and our daily interactions with one another my thinking praise God for the work of the island Temple Church throughout the years that has continuously given light to men and women bring greetings from the church by the side of the road in Berkeley that is not the location it's actually the name proud to serve above the people of God a man there is a word from from the Lord Saint Mark chapter 5 I want to read for your hearing verses 1 through 6 Saint Mark chapter 5 well there it is there then they came to the other side of the sea to the country of the gadarenes and when he had come out of the boat immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit who had his dwelling among the tombs and no one could bind him not even with chains because he had often been bound with shackles and chains and the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shack was broken in pieces neither could anyone tame him and always night and day he was in the mountains and in the tombs crying and cutting himself with stones when he saw Jesus from afar he ran and worshipped him the Word of God for the people of God you may be seated in the household of the Lord I want to talk this morning from this notion he looked beyond our faults he looked beyond our faults AMERICA AMERICA God shed God's grace on thee and Crown thy good with Liberty from sea to shining sea yes I too sing America I am the darker brother they send me to eat in the kitchen when company comes but I eat well and I grow strong and I laugh ha ha tomorrow you see I won't be in the kitchen I'll be at the table when company comes and they won't dare say to me eat in the kitchen then besides they'll see how beautiful I am and be ashamed I too AM America for well over two centuries this has been the faith of the African American family I too AM America you see even though a portion of us came here chained and shackled against our wheel and a portion of us were already here some of us been in Alabama for 2,000 years it was with these strong hands coupled together with blood sweat tears and a keen mind that we helped to build this nation from her very foundation yes that quote unquote inward family was one characterized by men and women of God who were slaves who risk life and limb running away from slave masters why in order to have some responsibility for their family and then there was that colored family which was characterized by men and women who were sharecroppers who had their sons and daughters outside in the field until Kent C in the morning or two can't see at night working side by side in the heat of the day in order to have some food on the table for their family that generation was also characterized by its strong mothers who love their sons so much and who had so much sense that when those boys got old enough to decide that they would swing from a tree before they said yes sir to mr. Charlie again mother she would pack them some fried chicken and boiled eggs kiss them on the cheek and put them on trains bound for New York Chicago and Oakland California and all points in between you see mother she loved her family and then there's that black family of just a generation ago one which was characterized by its sons and daughters who march non-violently down the streets of Georgia Alabama and Mississippi and some who march not so non-violently down the streets of Harlem watts and Berkeley all marching unto God come on I need some Black Panthers in here to say man I got one or two and I was all marching under God fighting for the survival of their families oh but if it had not been for the Lord on our side tell me where would we be for God has constantly looked beyond our faults and they saw our needs well brothers and sisters this brings me to this present and future generation some have stated brother of on that because of the plight of young black men in particular and because of our dealings in drug trafficking and black-on-black crime alcohol abuse sexual deviancy and the moral decline that this generation of the african-american family will be characterized as that of a lost generation while I do not deny this to be true I believe that the situation has become even worse but not only are we becoming a lost generation what is worse is that we are fast becoming a left generation though I mean when our own families decide that the best thing that they can do or for a young black man is to allow the authorities to come in and to lock us away for years at a time then we are becoming a left generation with a school systems decide that the best thing that they can do for us as young black men is to speed us through the educational system or to expel us from it then we are becoming a left generation oh I wish I could make it plain when my climbing high school has the claws because the water is not right and young men and women are dying and all of us who are packing out the streets and sounding the alarm is saying Oakland will not be Flint Michigan then we are becoming a [Music] [Applause] we suck at making play you see if you take my son Ambrose jr. with you to the mall and didn't come back some hours later and report to me that Ambrose got lost in the mall I'm going to say to you knowing Ambrose oh I know he has the ability to get himself lost but what is worse is that he has now been left in order to come back and tell me you've left my son lost in the mall now before I say something that's not in the Bible and you better get your car keys so we can go back and get my son all right I have to polish that one up again let's see in this fifth chapter of the Gospel recorded by st. mark cousin Daisy we find a lost man which someone has seemingly left a man perhaps like any other man but a man which the Bible depicts as having an unclean spirit thus and in pure spirit thus if you will a man who has watched this some unresolved problems I know we're talking about health today but health is about mind body and soul and you cannot heal the physical if you're not in tune with the mental and for for too long the black church does not talk about mental illness and mental trauma so yes this man had some problems for the Bible says that he had his dwelling among the tombs that is to say that he lived in a graveyard now I don't know about you but if I ask her brother where he lives and he tells me to take 580 North and take the hilltop exit making a right off of the ramp and then the first immediate right I'm gonna think this brother has some problems those those other directions the hilltop cemetery hanging out at rolling hills now the bible does not say why this young man had these unclean spirits and neither do i claim to be perfectly sure perhaps daddy wasn't around anymore and every time i brought up daddy names she was cussing in my head telling that boy you look just like your dad I don't know I don't know why this young man has he's in pure spirits perhaps he watched mama working seven days a week 24 hours around the clock and saw that she was still not able to make ends meet maybe just maybe he decided that he was going to help mama out by any means necessary the only problem being he didn't have very many means to choose from perhaps he lived in a society not too much unlike our own a society that would treat his forefathers positive strives towards equality as if they were unfair strides towards inequality a society that would not allow him in the mainstream socially politically or economic all I'm saying is that maybe his dad he worked at the cannery or out at the shipyard but didn't they close the shipyard and won't high at the cannery that's all I'm saying and perhaps it's this man society would not allow him into the mainstream perhaps it was then that he elected to live in what I call the shame stream of life or the shame stream of life is that way of life that says since you won't allow me to sell stocks and bonds to be all that I can be then I'll sell rocks and guns to be all that I can be the shame stream of life is that way of life that says since you won't allow industry in my community that would help me to work and take good care of my babies I'll have babies anyway and let you worry about taking care of them yes this man lived in the same stream of life for the Bible says that he spent his time not in the realm of community but that he spent his time on the outskirts of life up in the mountains and down in the tombs yes in the day time he was up in the mountains away from any social or political power and in the evening he was down in the tomb away from any morals or family values yes I tell you just like our young brothers who stand on the corners in every inner city of these United States he lived his life in the mountains and down in the tombs up in the mountains and down in the tombs up in the mountains and down in the tombs up in the mountains and down in the tombs but the part they really preached my soul where the Bible says at night and day he'd be crying and cutting himself we stole brothers and sisters I'm not sure why this young man had these unclean spirits these impure spirits these unresolved problems and I don't know why he elected to live in the same stream of life and no I don't know why living in the same stream of life would cause him to want to harm even himself perhaps after a long day of working in the mountains you know doing things that people who live in the mainstream of society do not do perhaps he would then slip back down into the loneliness of his tombs and they began to look at himself through the eyes of the people who lived in the mainstream I'm saying that maybe he watched a lot of 6 o'clock news maybe you watch cops you know what I mean perhaps like a lot of us he was married to look at himself in somewhat of a negative light somebody told her like one day our members a small boy my brothers Bruce being and I would watch Tarzan the ape man Tarzan the Caucasian gentleman would swings of the quote-unquote forests of darkest Africa every Saturday morning he would then succeed in defeating an entire tribe of people who were indigenous to the area and the odd thing is that all of the wild Tarzan was kicking and knocking these big Africans to the ground who looked like us my brothers and I found ourselves rooting for Tarzan our beloved I'm saying that since this man society would suggest to him that he was substandard perhaps this caused him not to participate perhaps this cause in the field unwanted perhaps this caused him to form a mentality that was so self-destructive that he now had the ability to cut even himself with stones he loved it from sea to shining sea some of african-american men have for whatever reason four mentalities that are so self-destructive that we now have the ability to jump into the back of a slow-moving van and to open up fire on people who look like we look search some of us have four mentalities that are so self-destructive that we now have the ability to get into the backseat of a car with an acquaintance to put our arms around his shoulder pull a gun from our coat and to free that acquaintance from a life of isolation bangbang you did and oh how I wish that I were you you see beloved I admit that this young man had some issues he had some unclean spirit some impure spirit some unresolved problems yes he had some issues but beloved I would be remiss in my duties this morning if I did not share with you the fact that this gala reading community in which this man lived also had some problems of its own the first problem that they had in this gallery lien community was that there was some type of white market operating near the mountains verse 11 says now there was near the mountains a great herd of swine feeding now that would not have been such a big a bad thing all by itself but the a Clause of verse 14 lets us know that there were people feeding these swine now these swine feeders were not the people who lived in the same stream of life but whoever they were they were making an economic killing because the consumption of pig just like the consumption of crack cocaine and prescription drugs are today was then against the law I'm saying they had some problems in this gallery reading community the second problem that they had in this community was that they spent too much time trying to keep this man on lockdown verse three says that no man could bind him that tells me that a lot of men tried no not we changed and that he had often been bound with fetters or chuckles and chained Church what type of parent what type of mother when she hears her baby crying in the midnight hour because that baby has not had enough food to eat would take some tape and place it across that baby's mouth instead of getting up going door-to-door until she has found some food for that baby to eat Church what kind of humane society do you think would take their children there men and women who have social and economic problems and because these men and women react to their problems the society would take them and lock them up hands and feet instead of trying to alleviate their problem I tell you it is a sick society Church some folk argue that this brother was crazy but this morning I beg to differ you see this man had sense enough to break free from his chains and to steer clear of a society that did not have his best interest in mind lord have mercy y'all have any friends that ever dropped out of school y'all had new folk that ever reported to Big Mama that you know they just don't like me you said we're anything wrong with them teachers issue but sometimes I'm trying to tell you that the system don't like us I'm trying to tell you how I ain't crazy every so night and day day and night he lived his life not in the realm of community but he lived his life up in the mountains and down in the tombs up in the mountains and down in the tombs up in the mountains and down in the tooth crying and cutting himself with stones then we get to verse 6 I like verse 6 you ought to get you a verse 6 and carry it around with you in your pocket first 6 starts with a conjunction it says but when he saw Jesus he was cutting himself with stones but when he saw Jesus he was having a bad time day but when he saw Jesus he was this crashing on the Oscars but when he saw Jesus he ran got on his knees and worship Him I don't know what it was about Jesus that made this man believe that Jesus would come to his rescue perhaps this man was at the wedding feast that day in Cana of Galilee and maybe there he had watched my Jesus turned water into wine I don't know what it was about Jesus that made this man believe that Jesus would help him perhaps one day he was working in the mountains he peered down and saw the odd appearance of Jesus turning around and a crowd of people who were pressing upon him from every leaning side and asking the peculiar question who touched me and maybe just maybe he heard the voice of the little old lady saying it was I who touched you Jesus because I knew if I touched the hem of your garment I'd be made whole I don't know me maybe by the time Jesus arrived at gyruss house maybe this man had run down the hill and it slipped under the bed where gyruss dying daughter delay and maybe just maybe after everyone had gone and left the girl for dead maybe he stayed right there and watched Jesus turning on coming funeral into a family reunion I don't know what made this man believe that Jesus would come to residence rescue perhaps when he was in the temple of the Lord that day he heard Jesus has he opened up the Book of Isaiah and read for the Spirit of the Lord is upon me for he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor to heal the brokenhearted to preach deliverance of the captives and recovering of sight to the blind to set at liberty them that were oppressed oh I don't know what it was why this man believed that Jesus would come to his rescue but out of all of the people in his community out of all of the institutions in his society when he saw Jesus he got on his knees and worshiped him Oh brothers and sisters we have to see Jesus today and I'm not talking about that picture that Michelangelo rode through huh well we got to see Jesus today I'm not talking about the picture that was in my Bible but if my mama gave me in 1978 no that's what I'm talking about and you got to be able to see the Jesus on the inside of you you got to be able to see Jesus when you look in the mirror you got to be able to see Jesus when he saw Jesus almost as if he knew that Jesus would come Benny and lynnie were brothers they were twin boys every time you saw Benny you were sure to see Lenny they were to school together they went to church together they were brothers and they stuck together one day war broke out they got called up go over to Nam Lina decided that he was going to fight for his country so obviously Benny his twin he was right by his brothers side another boy is usually fought side by side but this particular morning as they hit the beach and March gallantly upfield they found themselves flanked by the enemy needless to say all h-e double hockey sticks broke loose by the time the commander gave the call to retreat Binney was on one side of the beach and Lenny was on the other now beanie heard the call to retreat but Lenny but the men got back to the trenches a head count was taken and Benny found that his brother Lenny was not there immediately I mean almost instantaneously Benny leaped up out of the trenches and onto the battlefield dodging bullet after bullet until he came upon his brother who was lying there stretch.look in the sand with shrapnel piercing his body and blood oh the blood ran down his brow his being he kneeled down and put his arms around his wounded brother with smoke filling his nostrils and bombs bursting overhead Lenny looked up at his brother Binney and said these words Benny out of all of the people in the world lord have mercy I knew that you would come Church can the african-american community say that of us today I mean can little black boys and little black girls say to the church we knew that you would come give the drug dealers and the pimps and prostitutes who are our sons and daughters nieces and nephews say to you this morning that when the world had used and abused us undo us into the pit of everlasting we knew that you would come for us when we when we were down and out him they say Ellen temple we knew that you would come let's see where it Wilma yes so here stands Jesus my precious and my compassion Jesus he's standing up there looking just like Shaka Zulu Yahoo the night prior he had been asleep on a ship that was tossing to and fro in the midst of the sea and he had been awakened by twelve frantic disciples in the Bible I said that he came up on deck from the bottom of the ship and stood on the deck and said to the sea peace and then turn around his disciples and said now y'all be still Jesus my lily-of-the-valley my bright and morning star Jesus a father for the fatherless and a mother for the motherless Jesus a sister for the sisters and a brother for the brothers Jesus the great I am that I am here stands Jesus my precious and my compassionate Jesus he stands down in front of a man who lives in the same stream of life a man who has some unclean spirits some impure spirit some unresolved problems you all know Jesus could have done like the rest of this man's community he could have asked for some change to bind this man in fact Jesus could have bound this man better than he had ever been bound before and the community would have praised Jesus for it but I'm so glad this morning that Jesus took that opportunity to look beyond that man's faults and to see his knee Jesus saw that this man did not need to be continuously punished for his reactive behavior but that he needed to be saved from his apparent circumstance Jesus did not say to the man if you don't stop living like you're living you're going straight to hell in fact Jesus did not speak to this man at all but he spoke instead directly to the problems that confronted him Jesus said come out of the man thou unclean spirit and by the way what's your name the spirit replied my name is legion for we are many and then they begged Jesus to send them into the swine Jesus obliged but the swine ran and drowned themselves in the sea because they couldn't stand the field hang on and here with me let me see if I can close this thing beloved if we are truly going to go back and get the oncoming generation of african-american men it's time to Sankofa we got to move forward but we got to go back and get the precious things then we are going to have to stop speaking to him about the way that he reacts to his oppression and began to speak like Jesus spoke directly to the problems that confront him unclean spirit we know your name your name is historic mis-education you tell black men that they have no place in the annals of civilization you tell them that they ain't nothing in there gonna be nothing because they ain't never been nothing historic mis-education come out and go to the swath unclean spirit we know your name come on somebody say what's your name your name is low self-esteem and you make black men feel that they are little or less of nothing oh I know I'm talking on suicide rate is going up it's not going you make them believe that their lives are meaningless and worthless you allows them to kill and be killed without blinking and I know self-esteem in the name of Jesus come out and go to the swine Church I heard someone say the other day that they were glad that Martin King won us I equal rights but I asked you if it had not been for the Lord on our side tell me where would we be for constantly God has looked beyond our faults and has seen I need and just let me say this to the next generation that there is no secret what God can do now let me say this the folk were worried about trumpism that there is no secret what God can do what God has done for the generations God can do for you how a sermon was right he said when you're down and out and void of strength God will be that straight beyond your strength that gives strength to your strength Martin King was right when he said when you feel discouraged and all your work in vain it is then the Holy Spirit comes and revives your soul again grandmama was right when she looked up into her cupboard and saw that it was there she said he may not come when you want him but he's always on time he looked me down my fault he looked beyond my faults he looked beyond our fault and so our needs Amazing Grace shall always be our songs of praise for it was grace that brought my liberty I do not know just why he came to love me so he looked beyond my faults and saw my knees I shall forever lift my eyes to Calvary to view the cross where Jesus died for me how marvelous the place that caught my falling soul he looked beyond my phone Amen keep clapping keep clapping keep clapping for the person the persona and the personality of dr. Ambrose health care of may we all stand has the dose of the church are now open anybody grateful that God look beyond your faults anybody grateful for God they meet you right where you are [Music] there were artists that all of us don't have the story of the man that we were able to see and run to Jesus some of us were so bound and shocked that Jesus had to come all the way to us but are we not glad that God looks beyond our phones and sees our needs amen we have one amen amen the ministers and hours of your coming and doctor care of my favorite verses when Jesus asks that intriguing interrogative what is your name when's the last time you asked somebody [Music] what's your name [Music] some of us who are dealing with that low self-esteem and trying to realize who we are who we are in God sometimes we lose sight of what our name is but I think dr. Carol became to remind all of us that I name is victory that our name is liberation that our name in sound black and I'm proud and their black is beautiful so as we stand together of you coming on your Christian experience if you are coming for baptism if you are coming because you are new to the area and you are looking for a church home as our pastor says there are no perfect churches for there are no perfect people the other temple will welcome you with open arms so the time is now if God is knocking at the door of your heart asking what is your name the time is now to come [Music] Jesus [Music] hurry [Music] Oh [Applause] [Music] [Music] hitsue my and it comes [Music] Wow [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] hi [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] hallelujah what a moment what a moment we presently are living in how grateful we are for the word and song and the preached word oh God we thank you for the sacred moment and so it is here one of our incredibly sacred traditions is to always remember somebody ought to say remember remember remember our precious Lord Jesus he died but before he died he shared his precious blood for you and for me and I don't know about you but I don't know I would do worry not for his precious precious blood oh yes and it is in this sacred moment that we come commemorating celebrating and gathering as a community with one mind and one heart first asking God to forgive us of ourselves forgive us of sins known and unknown that we may come before his presence with the representation of his body and his blood won't you bow your heads father we thank you for this auspicious moment to remember all your precious son Jesus the son the one and only begotten Son that gave his very life for everyone that's listening and everyone that's watching and everyone that may listen at a different time than this moment God you gave your life through your son Jesus and so we now ask you to bless the elements the bread and the cup for it is in that incredibly matchless name of Jesus we do pray amen and as I have received of the Lord that which I deliver to you that the Lord Jesus on the same night that he was betrayed he took bread and when he had given thanks he blessed it he broke it he gave it to them and said take it yes eat and do this in remembrance of me and in the same manner he took the cup and he said this cup represents the New Testament in my blood for as often as you drink it you to do this in remembrance of me thank you Lord Jesus thank you Lord Jesus [Music] there was no benediction and they parted with a hymn [Music] No keep talking strategies for God's mission for the week of Sunday June 7th we look forward to celebrating the class of 2020 on scholarship Sunday next Sunday June 14th we invite those being promoted to kindergarten grade school junior high and high school as well as graduates from high school college and graduate school to submit your name school and information visit Allen -
