so today we're gonna try a thing called Sun printing as you can see for the first time I'm outside in my garden it's all very nice probably hear the birds for this you do need a few things but we'll see he needs some cotton fabric so that could be a piece of old sheet a pillowcase I actually this piece here is cut from one of my son's old school shirts that I'd put to go to the charity and I thought well if I can use it for this then that's also recycling that's a good use and I've even found an old t-shirt in the same charity bag so have a look see what you can come up with I've also got a bowl of water and I've got some paint that is this is acrylic paint and I've mixed it with water can you see it's come out quite nice and runny hoping that's going to work this is my first Garrett this so I've just got three colors so you can have whatever colors you like you don't have to use at this time whatever you can find so don't worry too much about the kind of paint the reason I've used acrylic is because it's permanent and he won't wash out of these things afterwards obviously fabric dye works really really well or fabric paint but you can experiment and see what you can do you might even be able to put some thinners from felt tips into water and sometimes you can get the color out of them that way okay so the other thing I've gone and done is around my garden if you can see is I've gone and collected a whole load of different leaves and flowers and most of these are weeds things like these are dandelion leaves can you see and there's a dandelion flower in there somewhere look various I'm very lucky loads of bluebells grow all over this is an elder that's a weed I even got a bit of grass because we had so much fun with the grass printing last time I've gone for a whole selection of shapes and so the way this works is that we're going to put the colors onto the fabric and then we're going to use those to make on top to make the pattern and I'll tell you about the science bit in a minute so the very first thing you need to do is get your fabric and in my bowl of water I'm going to make it wet now can you hear that's too wet I'm going to put this down and I'm going to wring that excess water out okay so I need two hands to give those a good squeeze and get all the extra water out so now they're wet they feel wet but they're not absolutely sudden because we're going to leave them to dry in the Sun so I gave them a really good squeeze and got all the big drips out and now I've laid them out on a piece of plastic now I didn't have a big tarpaulin so I've just cut down the sides of a carrier bag and made myself a nice piece of plastic you could do this just on the time I call the concrete but it might be nice to put something down to protect from the paint now while he is a good and wet I'm now gonna paint all over them with my three colors like I said this paint is just acrylic mixed with water because I want it to run and go all nice and splotchy and get like a sort of tie-dyed effect on here okay so I'm going to do a bit of that speed that up so you can see what happens so I hope you can see I've got a good level of color all over my pattern now and it's quite wet it's wet from the water and to even dribble some more of that on there and now what I'm going to do is I'm going to start making my pattern with my leaves and I'm just going to press them down so that they stick it's quite creepy that one's not going down very flat I'm gonna start laying my leaves on that side there can you see put some flowers on so not all of this is going to work this is my again my first experiment trying it for you guys I really liked those fluffy ones and I put those inside some of these leaves have come off some trees in my garden some have come off some plants please don't pick without asking first get a grown-up to come and pick things with you because they will know which things are safe and won't hurt here okay I'm pressing them down because what is going to happen hopefully is that under each they believe there will be a tiny shadow and that will protect the wet fabric from the Sun so the fabric under the leaves will dry less quickly than the fabric that's exposed just to the Sun straightaway so this area here will dry quicker and the area under the leaf and when little bit gets dry it wants just soak up water I'm sure you've seen what fabrics like when it gets water it sort of shows it sucks it up so it will suck the water out from under the leaf to the outside the leaf and it will take the paint with it so hopefully anywhere in shadow there's a really fine if we get anything off those that'll be impressive anything in shadow it will have had the paint sucked out of it by the fabric that's drying faster around the edge okay so I'm going to do the t-shirt next door I'm going to put the phone down and then I'll show you what I've done and then we'll leave them in the Sun and come back later yes I hopefully can see now I've got both of my bits of fabric painted and both of them are still very wet it's hard to tell on a picture I know and then I did put my design on the ones I think that are gonna work the best I wear I like here the leaves stuck down really well so I'm gently going around and tapping them down some things but too big and thick to stick down but we'll just see what the effects like will leave this dry come back in a bit see you later okay then guys so these have been drying in the Sun for quite a long time maybe two to three hours back of the t-shirt I just slid my hand underneath between the plastic and the fabric and I can feel that this one's dry but the back of the t-shirt is still a bit wet however Sun is starting to go down and I can't leave it much longer this might be a good activity to try in the morning okay so shall we peel away leave and see what's happened I can actually see then if you can that near some of these there is already some whiter marks oh that's worked well look so we try the grass I don't think much would have come from that sorry if do not the shadow how it has got a pattern I see to see where the shadows have left a white mark because the paint's been sucked out there let's try the flower Oh brilliant right I need to keep removing these having to sit to the side sorry so don't put a shadow on it and unsplit it up Wow I'm really impressed about and some of the ones I didn't even think I think you get sort of 3d effect where I didn't think they'd step very well even that really really thin one has given a sort of vania fact but some of them are beautiful really impressed with that I'm going to do the t-shirt now you okay so the t-shirts worked brilliantly as well some of them not quite as clearly as the pins piece of thin cotton from the shirt I suspect because it was thin air dried better and quicker but that's fun particularly in the middle of the t-shirts worked really well that's a really nice effect quite Junglee isn't it brilliant so I'm going to peg this out to make sure they're dry on the back and then because I've used acrylic I'm going to give them an iron when they're dry and that should set the acrylic but definitely I'm very impressed with both of them that one particularly if you've just done it on a piece of fabric like that I have to think about what you might like to do with it you could sew it into a little cushion cover or make a teddy or a toy out of it you could even sew it on to a t-shirt or something like that make a little bag to go shopping loads of things you could do with some printing fantastic really impressed with that guy's have fun trying bye you
