[Music] these forty days of lent oh lord with you we fast and pray teach us to disoben our wills and follow lord [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit well thank you and welcome and we appreciate you all joining us from around the world i'm father chris aylor one of the marian priests it's an honor to be here with father ron our house superior father bob our assistant rector brother ben our seminarian and as usual father brother mark and ken so thank you for joining us today we go into the third sunday of lent and we hear a common misunderstanding in the scriptures today about commerce and so what is our lord's message there that has to do with selfishness so let us listen and open our hearts and our minds to receive this word and then to receive it literally in the eucharist so brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] a [Music] is [Music] let us pray oh god author of every mercy and of all goodness who in fasting prayer and almsgiving have shown us a remedy for sin look graciously on this confession of our lowliness that we who are bowed down by our conscience may always be lifted up by your mercy through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever r amen a reading from the book of exodus in those days god delivered all these commandments i the lord am your god who brought you out of the land of egypt that place of slavery you shall not have other gods beside me you shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth you shall not bow down before them or worship them for i the lord your god am a jealous god inflicting punishment for their father's wickedness on the children of those who hate me down to the third and fourth generation but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments you shall not take the name of the lord your god in vain for the lord will not leave unpunished the one who takes his name in vain remember to keep holy the sabbath day six days you may labor and do all your work but the seventh day is the sabbath of the lord your god no work may be done then either by you or your son or daughter or male or female slave or your beast or by the alien who lives with you in six days the lord made the heavens and the earth the sea and all that is in them but on the seventh day he rested that is why the lord has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy honor your father and your mother that you may have long life in the land which the lord your god is giving you you shall not kill you shall not commit adultery you shall not steal you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor you shall not covet your neighbor's house you shall not covet your neighbor's wife nor his male or female slave nor his ox or ass or anything else that belongs to him the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] lord you have the words lord you have the words of everlasting life of the lord is perfect refreshing the soul the decree of the lord is trustworthy giving wisdom to the simple lord you have the words the precepts of the lord are right rejoicing the heart [Music] the command of the lord is clear enlightening the eyes life the fear of the lord is pure enduring forever the ordinances of the lord are true all of them just lord you have a [Music] they are more precious than gold than a heap of purest gold sweeter also than syrup or honey from the cold you have the words a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters jews demand signs and greeks look for wisdom but we proclaim christ crucified a stumbling a stumbling block to the jews and foolishness to gentiles but to those who are called jews and greeks alike christ the power of god and the wisdom of god for the foolishness of god is wiser than human wisdom and the weakness of god is stronger than human strength the word of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory praise jesus christ king of endless glory god so loved the world that he gave us his only son so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to john glory to you o lord since the passover of the jews was near jesus went up to jerusalem he found in the temple area those who sold oxen sheep and doves as well as the money changers seated there he made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area with the sheep and oxen and spilled the coins of the money changers and overthrown their tables and to those who sold doves he said take these out of here and stop making my father's house a marketplace his disciples recalled the words of scripture zeal for your house will consume me at this the jews answered and said to him what sign can you show us for doing this jesus answered and said to them destroy this temple and in three days i will raise it up the jews said this temple has been under construction for 46 years and you will raise it up in three days but he was speaking about the temple of his body therefore when he was raised from the dead his disciples remembered that he had said this and they came to believe the scripture and the word jesus had spoken while he was in jerusalem for the feast of passover many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing but jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all and did not need anyone to testify about human nature he himself understood it well the gospel of the lord praise grace to you lord jesus christ well we're grateful that you could join us as we continue our lenten journey it's funny because this morning when i got up i had put together some catechism quotes and some quotes from the church fathers and i was going to read it and i drove over here and i told father ron i said gee i forgot all that you want to do the homily so it's like because i don't have anything here to be able to read but you know that must mean god wants to go a different direction so just opening our heart to the message here there was one thing i was not going to talk about and that was listening to brother ben read that first reading and i think this is god at work because i wasn't going to mention that now what is the tie between that first and second reading all right now let's start actually with the gospel this is the only time in the gospels that jesus uses physical force now was it because our lord was guilty of the seven deadly sins of anger no it was a justifiable action remember i gave a talk a little bit of time ago about the difference between judging the person and judging the action what was our lord upset with our lord was upset not because there was necessarily an exchange for buying an animal to sacrifice outside of the temple or even in the outer courtyard because the inner part of the temple was the holy holies what was the problem well jesus isn't necessarily upset with commerce i mean god created commerce he gave man an economy uh to be able to be able to balance our our our lives and to be able to know that we have to contribute something to receive something all right you all know that the problem that jesus had here if you notice the term is with the money changers what was going on is when you went to the temple you needed animals to sacrifice now you had to purchase those so there was nothing wrong with purchasing these animals for sacrifice these were this was the standard of the judeo or the judah judah jewish faith now what then was the problem the problem was these exchangers were swindling the people they were taking advantage of the people by exchanging unfair much unfair rates it's kind of like when you are a traveler and you're stuck on the last day of your trip and you want to get home having to exchange your money at the airport the airport are the money day or the current day money changers you you hand them what should be a hundred dollars american to get back x number of euros and you get back about half of that right so our lord was upset that they were using his house the temple to swindle these innocent worshipers now the fact is what kind of sin do we have here now we talk about the worst and the not-so-worst sins is mortal and venial but you can actually deviate those up or divide those up because sins for instance you'll hear father mike gately say sins of malice are much worse than sins of weakness sins of weakness where we might be caught into an addiction because at 10 years old you started drinking alcohol the lord has mercy on this is it an excuse no but does the lord have mercy yes sins of weakness do not rival or rank with the types of sins of malice where i am ultimately want to destroy you i want to hurt you i wish you damnation these are the worst possible sins this is why lack of forgiveness in a sense is so serious because we want them to be punished and then the measure by which we measure will be measured out to us so please forgive you've heard me talk about that but this sin fits somewhere in the middle it's a sin of selfishness these money changers were focused on themselves wanting to maximize their income this sin kind of fits in between those two and we have a spectrum that our lord is opening our eyes to see the wide range that sin covers it covers a wide range all the way from the weakness where we don't want to do it to the worst of malice where we certainly want to do it to something in between where we don't want to hurt anybody else but we'll do what it takes to please ourselves this selfishness now why do i bring this up because i just think it all ties to what brother ben just read in that first reading the first commandment every one of those sins are based on pride pride is the king sin it was the fall of satan we all know this now don't have a misunderstanding of pride my father his friends tell me used to argue with sister alice marie back in third grade not understanding why pride was so bad well gee i want my dad to be proud of me well aren't you proud of your son aren't you proud of your daughter they made the honor roll that's not the kind of pride we're talking about that's joy i think the word pride is misused there that's a joy you as a parent take joy in the fact that your child is the starter starting quarterback on the football team or has been recognized for ex exemplary community service that's a joy yeah you can have pride in your son i'm proud of him or her it's not what we're talking about pride is the basis and the king of all sin what do you think the first commandment is well a lot of people will confuse and i want to talk about just the first and the second commandments and the third actually you see our lord in the first commandment says you will have no other gods before me now most of us take that to mean we don't worship buddha or allah were okay you've heard me say before that in the confessional i have very rarely had anyone confess to me the first breaking of the first commandment understandably i think that's because again we see it as not worshiping a pagan god but sadly we've probably all broken that first commandment at one time or another and the reason i say that is because this first commandment is putting anything or anyone ahead of god there is a throne in our heart every one of you every one of us all of us are born with a throne in our heart and we have free will to place upon that throne what we choose god will not force his way into our heart and force himself to sit on the throne of our heart that throne is up to you to what you place on it what is your god is it sex money or power these are the three things of the world that you've heard me say before the small g gods of the world of why we religious take the vows of poverty chastity and obedience we take the vow of poverty to overcome the small g god of the world of money we take the vow of chastity to overcome the small g god of the world of sex and we take the vow of obedience to overcome the small g god of the world of power now it doesn't stop there we could put people on that throne our modern day worship of athletes or movie stars is a good example if an athlete or a movie star mocks religion so should we we're putting their opinion and putting them on our throne rather than almighty god but probably the biggest and the most serious is none of that it's putting ourselves on that throne when we put ourselves on that throne through selfishness or in some way certainly malice or even weakness it's because we want we want to receive we want to be pleased we want to excel we want to be honored we want to have all we need we want our needs met we want to be the one who gets the attention paid to this is putting ourselves on the throne when our lord says in the first commandment to have no other gods we normally don't think that but any time that we are selfish we do that this is why the church teaches that contraception is so wrong contraception is being selfish because we are holding back from the one that we love in the marital act the three objectives of marriage unitive pro or procreative first unitive and getting your spouse to heaven we have to understand that to be unitive is uniting with the person and in contraception we are blocking that we are saying you know i love you kind of but i don't love you enough to have another one like you in the world i'm going to hold back because i can't get pregnant right now i'm going to go to get my master's degree i want that promotion at work and a baby will mess all of that up and from the father's side i can't do that right now i can't be a father right now i want to travel i want to see the world it's because we're self-focused that's why the church teaches that contraception is so wrong it's all based on that self-focus and that is pride what is the answer humility humility this is why we honor the blessed mother yesterday she's the queen of humility and if you saw our our three o'clock broadcast you saw brother patrick brother patrick's in the back i don't mean to embarrass him but god bless brother patrick you know that was the first time he spoke publicly and if you heard his talk wow i got so many comments and and people writing to me how beautiful it was i just got one this morning right before us buck up to mass and i don't even remember brother patrick have to look at it she said please tell brother patrick his last sentence was very powerful i apologize i don't remember what his last sentence was but i'm going to go back and listen to it that is the honor of our blessed mother that is the queen of humility that's the queen virtue because it counter acts pride that's why and then there's also a misunderstanding in humility people think humility is thinking less of yourself it's not you've heard me say before that would be like berry sanders saying i wasn't a good football player no that's not humility that's false humility he was a great football player he was the best now father ron is from texas so he might say earl campbell but barry sanders saying i'm not a good football player is false he was humility is simply the truth humility is not thinking less of yourself humility is thinking of yourself less that's why the saints tell us that it's so important in the fact the saints tell us that you know there are many many souls in hell that did many many good things there are souls in hell that worked at soup kitchens there are souls at hell that that wrote checks out to their church but there's not one soul in hell with the virtue of humility and likewise there are many souls in heaven that have done some bad things there are souls in heaven that have done drugs there are souls in heaven that have looked at pornography but there's not one soul in heaven with the vice of pride and to me that summarizes it all now that first commandment is also confused for the second half of it you shall not have graven images now a lot of non-catholics accuse us catholics of having these graven images i'm surprised but the most complaints i get from our postings and our videos this one is just still surprising to me by far the number one complaint that i get is call nobody your father so i guess that's because it says hear father chris speak on this topic that one is the biggest complaint we get against uh catholicism called no one your father and i've explained that one over and over but the next one that i probably get is you catholics worship idols graven images no the akina iconoclasm heresy and john damascene worked much to clarify this was clarified i think like the sixth or seventh century the point is is you gotta listen to what our lord says in that first commandment you shall not have graven images true but why if you read that first commandment it says for the sake of bowing down and worshipping them the fact that having graven images is not the first commandment it's worshipping that is against the first commandment otherwise why did god command that angels be carved cherubim or chair turban be carved and placed on the ark of the covenant to be carried by the jews why did god command moses to carve a serpent and raise it in the desert on a pole for the sick people to look upon to be healed what was a precursor of his son being lifted up on the cross that people will gaze upon it and be healed you've heard me say before that if you can't have a graven image then you have to remove every picture of your family off your desk because it's a graven image it's not what our lord meant he meant for the purpose of worshiping them from time to time i get complaints about the image of divine mercy when i do talks about the image of divine mercy it says that you know i always point that jesus said through this image those who venerate this image will not perish those are the lord's words not mine and man do i get the letters how dare you say that i mean the one beauty of having our videos out there online is is reaching non-catholics we've never been able to do this like this before i've gotten a lot of letters from you who are watching today that have come back to your catholic faith or weren't catholic at all felix and i were talking about this the other day we're reading through them and it's amazing how many people say you know i wasn't catholic one guy even wrote and says in the middle of this talk i stopped and asked my father to become catholic that's the beauty but with it comes a lot of attacks and hey we're priests that's what we're we we are ready for and those attacks are you are pagan you are disgusting because you are worshiping an image a graven image the image is of jesus and that image is of jesus and he says those who venerate not worship the canvas or the pain those who venerate this image which means what it stands for they will not perish so in that first commandment we don't understand it first part of it that we're not worshiping buddha allah so we never confess it no we could put things of the world people of the world or ourselves on that throne that god deserves and that second part of the first commandment not having grieving images we misunderstand to mean to even have him on your desk or on your wall no it's that we don't worship him and in our lord even clarifies this in the diary of saint faustina saying that it's not about the canvas or the color or the brush strokes it's about what it represents christ so when we venerate that image we are venerating yes the image but we are worshiping what it represents we don't worship the image we worship jesus who is in that image we are human creatures we're body and soul composite our lord knows we need to see feel touch to be able to understand something we have to see it so that's why he gives us the image and that image of divine mercy is the face of the father's mercy and so in it we have to understand this first commandment many people don't and when we do understand it we'll make sure the catholicism makes perfect sense in fact other people say catholics rewrote the ten commandments because our numbering system doesn't match what's in the bible well it depends if you're reading exodus or deuteronomy if you're reading deuteronomy 5 verses exodus 20 the fact that it is is the bible didn't number the commandments it did not say the first commandment is this the second the third the fourth the fifth the sixth is this you shall not commit adultery it doesn't say that fifth is you shall not murder it just listed them if you read exodus and deuteronomy it's just a way that it is written that the catholics have followed augustine and the protestants have followed the greek fathers in just the way that they number them it all encompasses it well you catholics remove that you're not supposed to worship raven images that means you want to worship graven images no our graven images is built into the first commandment the first commandment says you should have no other false gods before you so if you want to take a molten golden calf and mold it and place it on your shelf and worship it every day you have violated the first commandment to a catholic that says you shall not have any other gods besides me that includes worshiping an icon or a graven image the whole point is that's not what we do it's like our blessed mother we don't worship her we venerate we honor her as a good example that's the beauty of our catholic faith now i hope this made sense because i'm just rambling i know it but that's what's in my heart that's what came into my heart to speak to all of you today about so let us ask god today to help us to live that first commandment to put him on the throne not anything else of this world anybody else of this world or especially ourselves that's why the first two commandments are love god and love your neighbor now that doesn't mean we don't love ourselves we have to but in the sense of putting our god and our neighbor ahead of ourselves is the key remember that we are to put god first and if you do not if you don't do that if we don't put god first we've missed that first commandment and unless we die to ourselves unless we die we will not have life and what does the the gospel passage say that if we seek to save our life ultimately we will lose it if we seek to give up our life ultimately we will find it let us stand now and profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became men for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen let us offer now our petitions to our heavenly father for the church may the holy spirit strengthen her in teaching god's law in spirit and truth let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for government leaders may god inspire their creation of policies that follow his commandments especially that of respect for human dignity and life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those suffering any type of disease or affliction may christ the divine physician bring them comfort and healing let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those of us gathered here may the lord bless us in our lenten journey let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our beloved dead may christ who died for us welcome them into eternal life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all the members of the association of marian helpers and the confraternity of the immaculate conception both living and deceased and for all the intentions they have entrusted to us as well as all those who call or write to us may the lord favorably hear their prayers and strengthen them in faith hope and love let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer and let us reflect and ask god for the grace that we put him on the throne of our heart how do we do that we do that by serving god first our neighbor second and ourselves third we do that by following the teachings of the church we do that by following god's will not our will we do that when we sacrifice and we give up our life so that we may live in a seven in example of our savior so lord we ask that you give us this grace let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer heavenly father as we come before you as our one and only true god we worship you and we give you thanks and we ask all this through christ our lord amen [Music] blessed are you look out of our [Music] creations [Music] blessed are you of all creations [Music] pray brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church be pleased o lord with the sacrificial offerings and grant that we who beseech pardon for our own sins may take care to forgive our neighbor through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you have given your children a sacred time for the renewing and purifying of their hearts that freed from disordered affections they may so deal with the things of this passing world as to hold rather to the things that eternally endure and so with all the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory [Music] in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts that we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of our your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of mercy the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and drink this we proclaim your death o lord until you come again therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint faustina and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace of salvation all the world be pleased confirming faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth will your servant francis our pope and william our vision the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen gracely to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you and your compassionate merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world you are departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you after passing from this life give condiments your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you may saw in the world all that is good through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever r amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil amen deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and on us of mercy on all i'm of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the for the sake of his sorrowful passion have mercy on us let us pray as we receive the pledge of things yet hidden in heaven and are nourished while still on earth with the bread that comes from on high said you can still do it at the sunday mass if you were not able to do it yesterday so we invite you you could still go up there and watch the youtube channel now again just to summarize what our lord was teaching us today remember the issue with putting ourselves on the throne and rather than god is something we struggle with because it concupiscence that's original sin since original sin our human nature is broken and we have a tendency towards selfishness and self-focus that's why baptism is so critical wipe out that original sin but it is also why confession is so critical so that we continue to wipe it away as it keeps rearing its ugly head so please when the church is open go to the sacrament of confession receive holy communion the lord be with you and with your spirit may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit go in peace glorifying the lord by your life thanks be to god saint michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou o prince of the heavenly host by the power of god cast into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the rune of souls amen and we continue to pray for those who are affected by the coronavirus those who have passed especially our precious father seraphim your loved ones for you who are sick or ill in any example or case and for those providing care for the sick we ask for the lord's blessings upon all of you and god bless and have a great week and through these days and through your earth and we members of the marian fathers will be praying for you as a deceased member of our association you can share in the graces of the perpetual novena to the divine mercy remember jesus told
