We’re now going to talk about your album,
which is called Multitude. You have put in it influences from the five continents, you used instruments from South America,
Asia, some African rhythms... Is it a tribute to the globetrotting culture,
transmitted by your mother? We know that she made you travel a lot. She made us travel a lot with a backpack, we travelled to Mali, to Mexico... We really traveled everywhere, and she always had this desire to go see elsewhere. I did the same for this album, I wanted to explore grooves. A thing I really like to do is to look for different grooves. For exemple I’m going to take a Chinese violin called Erhu. A harpsichord Yes, an harpsichord, mixed with Brazilian baile funk. That's what I love to do, mixing things. The idea was really to take inspiration from everywhere but without being able to point at one country. I didn't want to have a Bolivian track, a Congolese track, a Rwandan track. I really wished to mix a lot of things. Hence the title Multitude, are you multiple? Yes exactly.
I think we all are. We are all multiple. We are full of different characters, we have a lot of different personalities, we are not summarized in a straitjacket, in a box. So if your songs have such a success, it is undoubtedly because it challenges us all. You put in music our shortcomings,
our contradictions. And I must say that it is always without concession, you are not soft.
Neither with you nor with us. It's true, that's how I see my music. People often define my songs with joyful music
and themes a little bit darker, a little bit sadder. It's how I see life, it's not completely white, not completely black, there are difficult moments,
more joyful moments. And it's always alternating. There is no high without low, there is no low without high. That's life. You also struggled for 7 years against a certain unhappiness. You speak about it with no restriction. In your songs you also talk a lot about loneliness. Did music help you to free yourself from it? I’m not alone in feeling all alone And that’s already something And if I counted all the people like me We’d be many Everything I ‘ve been thinking about, It’s crazy how many people have thought just the same. But even that doesn’t help me feeling less alone, Actually. I’ve considered suicide a few times and I’m not proud of it. Sometimes you feel it’d be the only way to silence them, All these thoughts putting me through hell, All these thoughts putting me through hell, Am I the only one with the TV on, Watching the Guilt Trip show? Well you should change channels sometimes, Although not too often, Otherwise it will send your head spinning again, And it’ll be too late to stop it. That’s precisely when I’d like to make it all disappear, Actually. I’ve considered suicide a few times and I’m not proud of it. Sometimes you feel it’d be the only way to silence them, All these thoughts putting me through hell, All these thoughts putting me through hell, You know, I’ve pondered the issue, I really don’t know what to do with you. I’ve considered the issue, The very problem is thinking about you. You know, I’ve pondered the issue, I really don’t know what to do with you. I’ve considered the issue, The very problem is thinking about you. Thank you Stromae for this beautiful gift. This song called "L'Enfer" is on your album, and you've never sing it in public before. Thank you for your sincerity. Thank you for the welcoming.
If you hit cc it will show you English subtitles. I don't speak French. The dude has a beautiful voice. But the lyrics hit pretty close to the chest too.
Also check out his single Santè he released before: https://youtu.be/CW7gfrTlr0Y
That song has a wicked rhythm for such a mainstream pop song.
Fuck yeah more stromae lets go.
Stromae is the best. I don’t speak a word of French, but the album “Racine carrée” is all gold. “Papaoutai” especially is such a great song on the subject of absent fathers.
Thanks for sharing. This is the same guy that sings the famous "Alors on Dance" https://youtu.be/VHoT4N43jK8
My man looking like Millie Bobby Brown.
Every single song I listen to from him either makes me smile or makes me cry. And they all give me goosebumps.
What a rare talent.
The eyes on that interviewer. Sheesh….
Probably cut away to prerecorded but still cool. For anyone wondering this is the French first channel evening news so very uncharacteristic for the program. TF1 is to France what BBC is in the UK.
Great to have stromae releasing music again after his absence.
Edit: My bad, TF1 is actually not the National broadcaster in France, France 2, France 3, etc is. It is the most popular channel and is free to air also.
