welcome back to the channel everybody my name's northern monkey and i'm here to help you with your streaming journey now on today's agenda essentially we're going to be showing you how to use streamlabs obs for the very first time now this video is aimed at people if you are coming from streaming straight from a console to twitch youtube or however you're doing it to using a capture card and a streaming pc or laptop so bear that in mind as we go through this video so you've got your console you've got your capture card you've got your streaming laptop or streaming pc or whatever it is that you're going to be streaming to from your console you install streamlabs obs for the very first time now you may be confronted with obviously a signing screen for twitch youtube or facebook make sure you sign in to whichever one it is that you're gonna be streaming to you may then be presented with some options of some free overlays that you can install now i would suggest skipping this part because you can find some in the store which i'm about to show you now so once you load into obs from those screens this is what you're going to be confronted with obviously not the never-ending window that you're seeing up here but essentially this screen now to get started with your overlays you're going to want to head to this icon over here which is themes now this is the theme store so we're going to go there now once the theme store loads up it it's a bit over facing i'm not going to lie to you the easiest way to get your first themes for free is just go to the search bar and type in free and it's going to bring up all the different scene themes that you can use for free on your stream now you can get premium ones through streamlabs obs by signing up to streamlabs prime which is a subscription service that you can either pay monthly or yearly i paid mine yearly but i wouldn't suggest doing that at first while you're only just getting started in streaming and using obs and building your stream from the beginning so the easiest way to do it is to use a free overlay for now if you don't want to sync too much money in obviously you may have just bought your capture card and your streaming laptop so you've already got a lot of money invested already so let's start with free ones now i'm going to install this scene theme it's not necessarily for everybody but it'll give you an idea of how it all works so you click on it you click install overlay so once you've installed your new scene theme the store is going to kick you back to this menu obviously where you've got stuff going on now here you will see i've got display capture ignore that that's just how i'm capturing my screen so that you can see what's going on so you should have your stream starting soon your live scene your intermission screen and your be right back screen or whatever you've installed it will have its own scenes down here in the left-hand side so moving forward you're going to want to make your stream your own with your own elements and your own little bits and bobs and you know make it look right and make it look the way you want it to look and make it look right for the games that you play and so on and so forth so that's what i'm going to show you how to do now the majority of the time for a free overlay like this one you won't have too many elements that you can play around with so on the starting screen you've got stuff like this which will just be your stream starting soon you've got nothing to mess about within the way of social media stuff or anything like that however you can add things so you can click on this little plus symbol you can click on text add source add a new source instead okay so you've got the text here let's type in facebook northern monkey just for an example click done okay you might be able to see that in the top of my screen there it's displaying above my display capture so i'm just going to drag that down there so anyway you can't see that now but when i turn this off you'll see it in the top left corner i'm going to turn this player capture back on can you see the little box that's appeared in the top left corner there that little green box obviously that i'm dragging around my screen now this is something that you will see without obviously the background of obs up on the screen that you can make things bigger with which i'll show you now obviously look it's made it much bigger you can click on it you can move it around you can bring it to wherever you want you can make it smaller so on and so forth once again i'll just quickly show you if you want to add your own social media stuff to the overlay if it doesn't already exist on there click the plus symbol there click text gdi add source new source add source and then you'll get a box like this where you can mess about with you can change the fonts you can change the colors have a little bit of a mess about with that you can put an outline on it all that good stuff so this is your starting screen now you've got your note you've got your your facebook you've got your instagram or whatever it is so that's your stream starting soon screen very simple very basic yet it will do what it needs to do obviously you can get that looking right the way you want it to look next will be what's known as the live scene did you notice i came over here to the left side these are your different scenes starting soon live scene intermission be right back now you'll have all these options up here once you click on something like live scene and we're going to show you what all those things are now naturally when you see all of these things going on down here it can get very very confusing very very quickly however it's nothing to be afraid of guys absolutely nothing to be afraid of and it's normal to look at it and be completely over-faced so don't worry now ignoring all of this for now we're going to want to sort out our overlay now this is what you should have or what it should look like if you install say for example the same theme as i've installed on this tutorial we're going to want our game capture and we're going to want our webcam aren't we so first things first to add a webcam click on the plus symbol click on video capture device add source add source and you should be presented with a box that looks like this now obviously we're looking for webcam at the moment so if you click on the drop down bar and you go to whatever your webcam is mine is the hd user facing so i click on that hello and yes i did do this at a different time because i messed it up the first time so i look a little bit different and don't have my ads on but never mind click done and your webcam is in however the problem we've got with this now is that it's appearing at the top of everything i'm going to drag this down and what you're going to want to drag it to is underneath your webcam frame now on your live screen you're going to see webcam it's going to be either too big too small it's not going to be in the right place so on and so forth don't worry i'm going to show you how to sort that out now so back over to here click on your video capture device which will be your webcam you can rename this if you wish by re-click right clicking on it rename webcam done so we're going to rename that our webcam now you're going to obviously have different things up on your screen to what you can see here right now because you won't have a display capture going on so essentially i've got to turn my display capture off to be able to move certain things around so i'm going to click on my webcam in fact i'll just show you this click on webcam and then you can move it okay so you can move your webcam to wherever you want it to be and then in the corners of the webcam you'll see little white boxes when you're doing it that you can resize your webcam with to get them behind your webcam frame now look see now this is the reason i showed you earlier that i came down here and i dropped my webcam sorry dropped my webcam behind my webcam frame if you drop it in front of your webcam frame it's going to be over the top of it if you drop it behind your webcam frame it's going to be behind it and then obviously your webcam frame appears over the top of your webcam footage so that's how you add a webcam now we're going to want our game capture and this works in exactly the same way however before we add our game capture we want to make sure that this image in the background is gone the way we do this is find the image now down here luckily on this overlay it says background and then in brackets delete me click on it right click remove okay and then when we go back over this is what you're going to be confronted with a black screen and then obviously you've got your overlay over the top now we want to add a game capture device so we're going to go on the plus symbol again we're going to go to video capture device add source add a new source instead and then click add source again now mine is an elgato hd 60s plus but it comes up as game capture hd 60s plus but make sure you click on the right one for what you're using so we click that we click done now once again that is going to appear at the top of everything else so i'm going to drag it down underneath my display capture which is what i'm using to show you guys how to do this so here's our video capture device we want this to be behind absolutely everything else that needs to be at the very very back unless you're getting into some complex stuff which we can go through in a later video but for now drop it at the very very back now we've got our webcam or overlay everything is appearing over the top of the game footage which is exactly what we're looking for so taking you back to display capture now we've got our game footage we've got our webcam footage now what we want is that your name section up at the top there we want that to say your name so what we've got to do is find that section now obviously you can do this by clicking on each individual element until it highlights it like it is doing on my screen but on in this case you've got header and header name okay so obviously header name is what we want to change right click properties and then you should have this little box pop up and where it says your name that's what you want to replace i'm going to replace it with norvin for now click done and then when we go back to the main screen there it is northern at the top however it seems to be uh just off centered so to sort this out all we've got to do is come down to header name highlight it and it'll highlight it in a box like that okay so header name highlighted drag it to where you want it to be on your screen centralize it jobs are good and lovely now obviously make sure that your twitch username fits if it doesn't resize it and that's easily done by obviously clicking on the header name again you'll get the little box with the little white squares on the corners and on the edges you just resize using that and you're away let's go back over to display capture jobs are good and make it as big or as small as you like and you're all good now one thing i figured out very very late on which i wish i hadn't and i wish somebody would have told me about this is obviously you're going to want to move your webcam around depending on the game that you're playing obviously if you're playing war zone you don't want it in the top right covering your kills and all that good stuff you don't want to cover in your your mini-map you want people to be able to see it as much of the game that you're playing as possible but also you want them to be able to see your reaction so you don't want your webcam too small and you need it in the right place however you will find that by moving your webcam around oh i've moved the frame but i've not moved my webcam or you want to move your bits and bobs that are underneath it to a different position on the screen but you want it to all move together you try and move it but it all starts moving separately and this is where it becomes an issue now because you've got to try and fit everything in nicely i wish somebody had showed me this from the very very beginning there's a little folder symbol here you can add a new folder so you add that okay i'm going to drag it underneath my display capture now you've got your new donation stream label you've got your new follower stream label your new follower your new donation your label your label one and you've got your webcam frame and you've got your webcam if you hold control on your keyboard as most of us should know by now hold ctrl left click on your mouse everything that you want to drag into that folder drag it in it's all in there now so when you want to move your webcam around and it's all in this folder you can just grab it you can pick it up you can move it about the place and you can just move everything will come with it then no messing about no having to move all your individual elements it'll all come together and that way it'll stay nice and neat and tidy say for example you want to move all of the labels that are underneath your webcam just highlight all of the labels and drop all of them in one folder together let's create a new folder folder one drag that underneath display capture now let's move all our labels but keep our webcam and webcam frame together right so now they're all in a separate folder we're going to go back to the live screen and now if i want to move my labels and have them somewhere else i can do you can do it individually for each label you can have a different folder for each label so for a new donation a new follower a new subscription new cheer when you do eventually make affiliate on twitch or whatever platform you're on depending on whether it's stars for facebook or whether it's you know just general donations and stuff for youtube i don't quite know how those two platforms work because i'm a twitch streamer myself so you know now you've got everything going nice and neat and tidy different folders for different things you can move everything all at once you can move everything all together you can drop a folder in a folder and have subfolders so on and so forth and all you've got to do to do that is drag and drop it in there and then obviously look now it's all in one folder only problem with that now is is everything will move at once when you highlight that unless you click on the different folder inside the subfolder and so on obviously it can get very complicated when you start doing stuff like that we've got all that sorted out that's all well and good so i'm just going to quickly undo everything i just did and the subfolders and all of that good stuff and keep the web webcam all as one folder with all the webcam stuff on the stream labels all under one folder to make it easier so we've got our video capture device we've got our webcam sorted everything's looking tasty we're ready to rock and roll however in the background your game footage looks a little bit off now this is very very very easily sold and once again i kind of wish somebody would have showed me how to do this once upon a time left click on your video capture device right click it click on filters click on the plus symbol and then you'll get a drop down bar go down to color correction click it click done and you'll get a color correction filter box where you can change your gamut you can change your contrast and all that good stuff you know you can mess about with it until your heart's content until it's looking right and all that good stuff and then next time you want to change it depending on which game you're playing if the gameplay is not looking quite right right click it click on filters and it'll already be there waiting for you now obviously if you want to reset everything just reset everything to zero except for the opacity that should be at 100 the whole time so moving on from here now i'll just turn my display capture off as i said our overlay for our live scene is all sorted as i mentioned earlier on our starting screen we've got our stream starting soon we've got our facebook and whatever social medias we want now we've got to move on to our intermission screen we move over to intermission now you'll be faced with again new things you've got your new donation you've got your new follower you don't really need to do a lot with this but you will also be faced with things like chat box so your chat box is obviously where your chat will appear on the screen while you're on intermission so that's the section on the right hand side now depending on what you prefer on your intermission screen if you want game play on your intermission screen you need to add your video capture device like i showed you earlier if you want your webcam on there you need to add your webcam like i showed you earlier very easy plus symbol video capture device add source now this is where it gets a little bit easier because you've already added these sources into a different scene so you can just click which one you want so let's add the webcam let's do what we normally do we drag and drop down to where we want it now we want it behind absolutely everything so my webcam is now down here behind all of the elements on the intermission screen now it's out of place a little bit that's fine you know how to move it you can move it you can play with it as much as you want and there's your intermission screen there's your webcam hello now you've got your chat box to mess about with now your chat box is this little thing here which is highlighted with a green outline now obviously when you click on this you'll see a different view to what i'm seeing now so i'm just trying to work with this the best way that i can i'm going to turn my display capture off click on my chat box and you just need to make sure that the chat box outline fits within the chat box on your intermission screen okay so your intermission screen chat box it looks good to me there so that's fine i'll turn that off now the next thing for your chat box if you left click your chat box then right click it and go down to properties okay now you'll be you'll be faced with this if you scroll all the way down to the bottom you'll see this little box here it says always show messages if you don't tick this your messages on your chat box will disappear now if you're a very very small streamer you don't really want that because you want your chat box to look busy so when people are typing in the messages will stay there and if anybody's watching the screen and has got chat box turned off on their mobile or whatever they can still see the chat on the screen that way so always show messages click done dealt with i'll just show you how to do that again very quickly left click your chat box right click properties scroll all the way down always show messages make sure that's ticked done so that's your intermission screen sorted out looking tasty jobs are good so we've got starting screen we've got live scene we've got intermission and we've got be right back now once again we've not done anything on the be right back screen but it works the same way as it did with the starting screen if you want to add text for your social medias click on the plus symbol click on text gdi plus add source and obviously we've already got the facebook one because we entered it before so we can just click that one in the add existing source section add source turn this off but again it does appear in the top left corner now an easier way to deal with this let me just uh turn my display capture back on i'll remove this source if you want to add an existing source that you've already got on another page so let's go to our starting soon screen we've got our facebook northern monkey underneath the stream starting soon all you've got to do is come down to your text gdi in your sources right click copy go over to be right back click on your main screen up at the top paste reference turn display capture off and there you go so you can essentially just copy and paste pretty much every element you can do it with your webcam if i go over to live scene here turn this off and i click on that folder that we created for our webcam earlier copy it got to be right back if i wanted it here all i would need to do is go up to the main screen up here paste reference it will appear and you can have your webcam wherever you want it you can do that with any element of all of your overlays you can just copy and paste them for the most part anyway for the most part stingers and transitions are a little bit different which i'll get into in next week's video so we're looking good we're ready to stream everybody's happy jobs are good the only other thing i want to talk about very very quickly on here is the alert box can you see the little zombie running and it'll say stage is now following that is your standard alert when you first add in streamlabs obs this here will be your standard alert if that's not what you're looking for that is another thing i am also going to cover in next week's video so make sure you come back for that so guys that's the basics of using streamlabs obs sorting out your first overlay sorting out your intermission you be right back your live screen adding sources adding your game capture adding your webcam and all that good stuff now if you've got any
