mechanics it's a word used to describe the individual abilities of a player you can teach players how to rotate on a map or secure vision for their team but you cannot teach anyone how to outplay khan in lane korean players are considered to be the best mechanical players in the world and over the last seven years every single team that have been crowned world champions have had korean players in their solo lanes even when teams were not from korea those teams had korean zololiners but this is not a story about the korean players it's a story about a player that has been able to overcome that barrier this is a story about one of the most mechanically skilled players in the world that had to overcome his own ego it's about how dedicated one person was and making sure that his mechanics were unquestionably the best in an infamous story told by his former coach when lng flandre lost a 1v1 in a matchup where he could have won but gok mechanically outplayed he would physically slap the out of his own face in order to punish himself when he lost that 1v1 this is the story of edg flandre the only non-korean solo laner in the world since season 2 to win a world championship this is league of documentary edg's control and this is ocean soul available for the lpl squad the teleport to come in through from the flank of laundry it's done one kia they're still fighting their time goes in pops immediately like a volume canyon going to follow soup laundry gets exhausted and khan now trying to continue this fight some low health bars as the flash comes forward khan goes golden viper is still alive though flashes in show maker down to 200 he's a sitting smash the dreams of the lck into the ground here they get the soul medius they clean up the extra kills off of the team fight and edg will push ahead taking full control of summoner's rift and the arrow in the front they found yuki he still snared but they managed to turn around and kill guagul in the meanwhile flandre flashes in finds life andre was a player that came up to the system of chinese youth development ranks because of how many kids want to become pro gamers in china they start developing these kids to be pro lpl players as young as 12 years of age before the youth gaming ban there were hundreds of under 18 kids playing to one day have their shot in the lpl flandre was one of those players that came up through this system every one of the kids that gets into this type of training camp is considered to be a prodigy they're all challenger on their own respective servers but very few actually go on to play on the big stage but flandre was a prodigy among prodigies he made his first professional game debut on a team called snake esports he's gonna get stunned by braum though he's actually run away from under he does have his ulti back in absolutely massive but he gets stunned up i believe in you he came in with a lot of recognition and interest when snake was getting promoted to lpl and he just gave us the flanders the next big thing he's the guy you know he's gonna be the best player in china like he could play all of these things and half the time i didn't even think he thought they were good but he could get away with playing them because he was good he just didn't lose he was playing really well at that time the team would play towards him he constantly had a huge champion pool they were banning out these niche picks that he played but when he joined the lpl he actually did the opposite of what he did in the lspl which is like playing all these creative things he literally zeroed in on like tank play maokai and all these things which i was really weirded out by but they found instant success when they first came into the split they i think got top two in the regular season and it was based off of playing the same compositions under like different metas he became a tank player he became someone who was more of a facilitator than somebody that needed to carry so that's when i realized he was a lot more complex than i had pegged him at the time snake was a very small organization but had a lot of great potential if you're familiar with the chinese league scene then you're aware that most of the games that take place in this region are ridiculous clown fiestas the lpl has more kills per minute than any other region and it's not even close this one now we can see there's the center plate on top of rookie and rookie's been left for dead it will be first blood going over to the side of lgd and now they finally take down shii they're gonna try and continue with this one as they did get the tp in from nene and now everybody's here what do you do the rumble is coming you can see him he's going to be here very very shortly this is a this is just crazy what is this what is going on everyone's on the bot lane it's four minutes into the game now here we go shadow and mark are the last ones to be trying to stand on top of this one rookie is here they are constantly in back and forth skirmishes all the time but even throughout the lpl aggression there are still levels to this some teams only take fights for major objectives like dragon or baron some teams take fights for small objectives such as scuttle crab for snake esports their objective is to fight they don't care about the matchup the state of the game or anything else snake esports would simply just throw all five members into a single team fight for something as small as a single raptor this was their playstyle if we're not in a fiesta we're looking to start one the better more experienced lpl teams would try to disengage or out macro them but for most of the egotistical lpl a lot of the other chinese teams were simply willing to take these fights against them and the main reason snake esports won so many of their games was thanks to the mechanical gap of their star players like flandre and sofm yuki's on the hunt he leaps in looking for light gets the rake over the wall but it's stunned and followed by flandre laundry though is split off leaving that wall though will he be able to back out of this as jin who is trying to chase it around the never move his blonder comes in from the side it was a front to back but somehow snake were able to find a flank and they turned it into an ace completely killing lgd so flandre just like stuck with snake and became the face of snake it was a sofm and flanders show flandre would be playing vladimir and sofm would be something on like either lee sin or rengar or something like that and they would just 2v5 team fights because they never back down from a fight early in those games it's actually hilarious the the most successful split when they first came in was literally just a team fight composition that begged you to either play away from them and split push successfully or find a way to counter the team fight because that's all they had as a as their like mindset mentality can you can coach overall team play but unlike 2016 and and the years before that where you can lane swap away from bad matchups and things like that and you can have a hyper focus on just lane swapping getting to overall focus on objectives no you can't do that anymore you there are so many games that feels like you're behind 2k based off laning and draft alone so you just have to have the strongest individual player but obviously they have to be open enough and smart enough to be able to understand how to play outside of lane when they won games it was because they had strong individual players you know lpl is a tough league so you know you're not going to necessarily be in 2017 stronger than we or 2018 stronger than rng and all these things but they were strong players that really cared about their mechanics and cared about like taking fights flandre's raw mechanical talent was enough to be able to outperform just about every other lpl top laner in the league it was thanks to their top gap that snake esports were even able to place in the top four of the lpl at all but unfortunately when it came to the bot lane snake always had poor results their ad carry often just got hard skill gapped and ended up in a deficit and you have to feel hyped about this series even the gates that's coming in israel has been caught out this is not good snake first blood already lost over to the super team yeah because of the poor performances of his teammates and the inability of his owners to get him laners that could actually match his level flandre would often lose motivation to play throughout the season this is coach nelson he's been a professional coach for the lms lpl and g2 esports he was also flandre's former coach and this is what he had to say about him in terms of a player my first impression of him i mean i mean i can say i can speak like pretty honestly now but it wasn't very good because i think he was just not happy what was happening in like a scrim or a practice game basically force the team to stop scrims or he'll ask the team to surrender because like he said like there's no no point in practicing with this player we were traveling at the same time you know basically always demands like perfection from and if they don't meet his standards then he would be very angry how they are setting up that vision as they decide to engage instead chains of corruption maestro flashing from sml z to get out of that that's award teleport onto the minion smoz trying to do whatever damage he can is doing b joins up room prison but the lambs respite that means spellflux can bounce on everyone kiwi gets in the heel comes across and it's a clean up from rogue warriors they find three chasing on to guo as holder follows through and that's a good pierce from kiwi to find himself the solo kill effectively and flandre dies snake get aced i think his biggest weakness is like not related to anything in the game because in game i think he he was like or he is probably like the perfect player that any coach would want he can play everything he can play any style he can be high resource low resource he can call every single role in the game i think that's something unique which probably only he has right now maybe his teammates are not good enough and it's not realistic to win with his teammates so why did an amazing talent like flandre stay on a team like snake for as long as he did flandre has an extremely loyal personality he's known to be close personal friends with the former owner of snake esports and because it was his friend's team he felt like he had a home here at snake esports it put flandre in a comfortable but familiar pattern it wasn't until sneak esports was bought out by lng lng is owned by li ning gaming which is very similar to a nike or under armour brand in china because his friend was no longer the owner and because it was now a big corporation that owned his team instead flandre was no longer bound by the ties of loyalty to stay on this team and because of this he was finally able to move on to a team where he was actually going to try and make a real run at world finals despite his motivation issues philandere did become a great team player what a lot of great players tend to do when they're on a bad team is they try to stand out individually they simply plan to sell themselves to a better team next year and make sure that the other teams know that when they lost games it wasn't really their fault but flandre did something a little bit different instead of playing a hard carry top laner and resource demanding like jax camille or gangplank flandre would instead place things like janna karma and other weak side tanks so that his team would be able to focus on the bot lane and allow them to improve even though he knew that his teammates were not the best mechanically he was willing to sacrifice his own lane and his own stardom to make sure that his teammates actually got better flandre knew he wasn't going to leave snake so he just tried to improve his situation instead during these times philando would play things that would be considered straight up troll but could also be considered innovative on the world meta things like pike azir and even kassadin top but his beginning time on edg was not met with praise when you've been doing the same thing year over year time and time and again it gets very difficult to break that habit no matter what it's going to be whether it's smoking daily drinking daily or running it down every single spring split of your entire professional career well if you're coming to a new team even if that team is an insanely exceptional team to be on flandre was still kind of running it down during his spring split um [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] he would have an explosive start but he would either team would start to lose or things would start to go wrong and he kind of lost his drive or motivation at the finish line they had always been one of the best domestic chinese teams but they always had one of the worst international records of all time in the group stage they were placed against t1 while faker is undisputedly the best player in league of legends history t1 was coming in as third seed for korea on paper the first seed from china should be easily able to beat the weakest team from korea and on the first few days of worlds edg did look like that team they played strong compositions and dominated their early games in every single game that they played they took convincing victories over t1 and the rest of their group damage from t1 is absurd carrier now spotted on a ward as he steps forward scout has the flank maker going in and look at the damage going down with carter he's dead faker has to get across the wall good usually flashes and edg once again win the fight another very clean team fight from edg great patience great flanks and just great utilization of their ultimates as well week two is when things started to fall apart edg lost one game to t1 and it was going to look like a tiebreaker game for first place here at worlds groups with edg this means now that if t1 and edg both win their final games of the group we will have a tiebreaker for first place here and that is going to be very exciting to watch we basically get a best of three here in this group stage assuming those two wins go through which is the prediction right now with both these teams advancing from the group the herald gives you the potential to get a tower graves already took it down you know an edg another one here in the mid lane set up graviton trying to find a little bit more poked in and hoogie very squishy but there's something in the midst of the entire keep ginger now going in scout off to the side one kill getting traded back closer now fishing for the reset can't go in with the sun it's too big the scatter works oh it's a disaster fbi on the hunt bray's now collapsing as well he might get picked up [Music] so they lost 100 thieves in the final game which would have put it to a tiebreaker that's why actually that was that game haunted that conversation because like going into it everyone's like yeah edg rng t1 like all these teams are like you know toss up favors to win but then after they lost 100 thieves like people legitimately doubted them that's frank pray from 100 thieves is they deny edg the tiebreaker at this point in time most of the fans were pretty much not expecting much anymore from edg they couldn't take first place out of a fairly easy bracket and they were going up against their quarterfinals curse most of the fans at this point expected the entire tournament to be decided on the other side of the bracket the korean civil war in the pursuit of perfection they are found worthy once again and they will fight t1 in semis in order to break their curse they had to play against their brother team rng from china and it was an extremely messy series this jungle already have control of the river oh that's an empowered group that's a mouse over the top and a double knock up and ulti back in way gonna kick him right back out and he will not take any more damage until shows up wait flandre is impatient but rewarded with first blood all the same knows who has his flash does not dodge the knockout between males that's gonna be guaranteed to land it silence everything else lands no way out heals a little bit and the turret trades them back well of course minions flooding into the bottom side first engage comes across a whole bunch onto scout and malzahar dies with summoners available and kryon brings in the reinforcements it's a rampage exactly that minute victory a slaughter against their countrymen here at edg their base will fall a best of five begins rng played a unique mid lane pick that no one had touched for years in professional play and that was the annie mid that's annie is the answer to ryze i love it i love it dude he knows his way and he's like legit good here too yes she is she's not bad she's getting locked up a fair bit that's gonna be the first one in a way smite's for help and it's a two for oh so far you means we just targets the third kill edg thought you're counting them out but they came to play looking for a fourth now not sure mine can survive this one he's going to head but pulverize get the aftershock a stun might do a little bit but it's not going to do a lot give viper the kill but very clearly it's a annie rome and it's just still not going to land finally ming shows up to finish the job laundry no easy way out but scout's here for a bit more did he put him where did he get you he certainly did it's going to be a 2-0 play rng finds signs alive so the only one winning amazon [Music] instead it is time to die it's a two for nothing edg diving into the base flandre brings a stopwatch viper arcane shifts forwards flandre's the target but xiaohu is the death and the same goes through for gala one man left alive crying as rng's hopes that a world title fall edg it took them six attempts but this time they will knock down rng this time edg won it all this team edg are headed to the semifinals following this series they had to play against the second sea korean team genji this was another close back and forth series with everything going all the way to game five once again so when the genji edg series was playing everyone on twitter was like oh this quality semi-final it's so bad let's just watch t1 dk again t1 dks the real final i was one of those people saying that the real finals would be the semi-finals of t1 versus don juan before the tournament like before the tournament happened i would say it would be dumb one then i would say like fpx and edg right but with how well t1 performed during the actual group stage and in the actual knockout stage i for sure thought it was going to be the top teams in worlds being dom 1 t1 went back and watched and i kind of changed my perception of edg because they were playing through side and to me that's how you play you beat dan one is you play like through sidelight so tank you keep in mind he has gotten so low just goes down that [Music] but the nexus will fall we have seen these fights before and yet again the lpl wins the base race backwards but be careful because they can keep on going it's a flash in for glenn it's a flash in for life one kill so far will they find a second mako is low mako does really gonna get that kill looking for another flashes and finds the shutdown and flanders on his way out gen g are gonna find this game they're gonna [Music] ruler gets another and that's gonna be the ace this time it is gen g fighting the kills klid does not miss [Music] they might find this kill but they might find cannon dying it's gonna be a dragon picked up it's scout getting to sleep getting the first kill and they might they should and they do get ruler the duck gone to life the ace comes through for jet jet we've had an exciting set of semi-finals we're going to game five until the viper stays alive we're gonna kill mako yes so one for nothing the shot's gonna cross ruler [Music] talk for the lpl ruler sees his kingdom fall to ashes he's got no turrets left he's got no life left and he's got no road left the world championship fighter puts it a couple of shots bdd is going to die and die and the nexus falls and e-d-g the last of the lpl are headed to their first world final everyone was expecting a quick 3-0 sweep from damon kia in the finals had edg played damon kia in the quarterfinals they likely would have been swept but after a gauntlet of a best of five series and scrims against t1 edg had played extensively against every single top tier team at worlds they were not coming in anymore as a shaky first week worlds group their path was the longest and the most challenging and it was one that forged them into a better team instead of coming in with the mentality like damon had of we already won this series they came in hungry and ready to prove everyone wrong no one expected them to win and so there was nowhere to go but up and for a series that so many predicted was a 3-0 yes it might be but it's not going to be for darwin edward absolutely wiping the floor already jj taking a lot of damage there's the stairs down double flashes as mako tries to engage showmaker going golden but can he actually [Music] [Music] taking the tower and picking up the extra kill edg oh the bubble lands here actually yeah this could be the pickup the mini wave turns up in the neck of time but ghost could be the one to go down and he absolutely is the heartbreaker comes in now jj in a bit of trouble he just gets himself over the wall canyon explodes as well as nami's turn into a fish finger showmaker now at about no health is khan's doing his very best to be the hero but it's not going to happen this game has done around once again they're running the wrong direction and edg should be taking this game in fact he's taking inhibitors himself in the cannon early throw down the pillar just to make or delay that engage and force him to you know make up yeah he's so far forward has to flash out the scan of the week is good but it's not good enough the slicing maelstrom comes in and now khan trying to take down canyon there's a collateral damage finally he gets it done and he's not done yet jj taking a lot of damage khan will fall down ghost is still alive doing a fair bit of work but barrel he's in the middle of four people and edg will wipe them off the map it's just a lonely six right here there is one turret between edg and history right now dash is forward shoulder goes golden but it's not going to keep him alive mako is going to be the sacrificial level it's a double kill already but laundry lightning rushing his way out of this one and now the nexus is exposed someone kia are limping will go down and against all odds edg will be your 2021 world champions they've done it they've actually done it i heard this from candace like the building would be moving from the amount of like cheers uh booming cheers from the fans when like the win when the team won and and it's an amazing feeling it's one of those things because china is the largest fan base in the world around for league of legends is in china and they care about the game and when they see that victory of course the celebration is one thing but also immediately afterwards people just go straight to playing the game i tried to log in a league and i couldn't log on for 30 minutes i was in a 30 or 40 minute queue to get into the client because everyone was motivated from that win to actually fire up the game and play themselves flandre's parents had never supported his dreams to become a pro player after fondre ran away from home to play professionally his relationship with his parents was forever damaged but since his victory over at worlds fondrei has confirmed himself that his relationship with his parents has slowly improved though his path has been chaotic and unconventional flandre's legacy has been secured as the first non-korean solo laner to win a world championship since season two this video was made in collaboration with the chinese lpl the official broadcaster of the chinese league of legend scene you can watch the official lpl stream at twitch.tv lpl thank
