[Music] there's nothing like the sound of a gild 12 string don't you agree anyway uh this is a brand new Guild that came into the shop because it needed a setup and uh new guitar setup um so what did we do to it to give it a new guitar setup well something very important after the regular usual details uh the action at the nut was over 20,000 uh so we took it down to about 14,000 uh Progressive across here which makes it a lot easier to play there was a lot of neck relief ski jump level neck relief so we adjusted the neck to straighten it out and uh check for high Frets Reed a couple High Frets cleaned a very dirty fingerboard from the factory and got the action down to 464th at the high e and 564 at the low E which is really good on any guitar but exceptional on a 12 string but Guild builds the builds these with a high enough standard of quality to be able to do that kind of a setup but most importantly I set this guitar up to be in D standard not E standard everybody is shipping their 12 strings whatever the brand with light gauge 10 gauge strings tuned to E standard which really overstresses the top the top can handle it on those guitars but what it does is sort of chokes the top out it kind of gives it a an overtightened drum head sound which is why you get all that mid to Upper range jangle and not much else we set this guitar up with 11 gauge strings and brought it down to D standard so it's very very easy to play but because it's down to D standard it opens the top up so that it brings alive that Orchestra that's hiding inside these guitars um I've been playing 12 string myself since I first heard leoi playing one way back in the 60s and I always tune my 12 strings down to D standard there's a couple of other benefits that come with that if you take your Capo and just put it on the second fret well now you're an E standard but because you have't tensioned over tension the top to bring it up to E standard you just put the capable on the top is still free to vibrate I could hear the I could feel the guitar vibrating against my rib cage but there's some other cool things you can do because of this so let's say you're want to play an E standard but you want to drop d well just put your Capo on and you need a capo that can do that put your Capo on the first five strings and leave the low E open well low D now you got drop d [Music] tuning so this enables you to kind of turn your guitar into a lead guitar and a uh rhythm guitar together so we could start out with something like Tennessee [Music] Stud now let's bring in the rest of the [Music] band [Music] now you'll notice that the guitar is pretty much staying in tune which 12 strings aren't famous for well that's due to the setup but it's also due to the quality of this Guild 12 string now the other thing I like to do with the 12 string and we've kind of moved into how do I like to play a 12 string a partial cape partial means it only capos a few strings at a time so in this position on this side of the neck I'm only caping the a the D and the g leaving the EB and E open and I get a very Celtic [Applause] sounding which is perfect for any kind of a Celtic droning sort of uh Vibe but the cool thing about it is because I haven't retuned any of the strings I can still play my closed [Music] forms [Music] so [Music] fun and finally I'll take off my finger picks and put on get a flat pick if I bring the partial Capo around to the other side and I'm caping the D G and B string now I've got my 12 string well customer's 12 string I've got this 12 string tuned to uh an open G tuning so this gets really cool like if you're playing anything in G with your 12 string tuned down to D standard with the Capo partial on that second fret you get the benefit of some open chord forms open tuning forms but you still get to play the closed forms so I hope this wasn't turning a fire hose on you but um this is one of the reasons why I like 12 strings so much now here's the other cool thing about this guitar it's a 500 $100 Guild Sweetwater sells these everybody sells these for $529 and that's before he ask the salesman for a deal so solid situs fru top and gild built this with a laminated arched Maple back which is how they were building those iconic guitars back in the Westerly plant back in the70s anyway hope you enjoyed this keep on picking and if you've got a 12 string and you want want to wake up its voice get a set of 11 gauge strings and tune it down a d standard it may need a setup so just take it to somebody who understands 12 strings and you'll have a guitar that just plays great for [Music] you [Music]
