here's a little Stone job I did about a month ago over here for a little Christmas party and I'm going to show you how I did it we are going to put Stone over this wall it's actually behind the bar that's covered right now and it's just a regular sheet rock so we're going to go over it I'm going to show you how I do it so the first thing I'm doing is I'm marking up here all my studs where the studs run down so that when I nail it I know where they go I want to talk a little bit about what's going on behind the scenes of this Stone job back in the80s we were the ones that actually built that cell so I knew it was a block wall behind it then after that I seen The Carpenters came in and they put a vapor barrier over it then they nailed their studs to the wall then they put a piece of Styrofoam behind it like that and then they came in and they put their sheet rock so I know when they put this on that I wasn't really sure how well it was put on so what I did was I marked my studs and I came and I put black paper then I came and I put my wire mesh now this is dimpled wire mesh you going to make a comment on that I don't know if you could see it but there's like little dimples in it it's supposed to keep it away from uh the black paper so the cement Gets behind it is that good or bad I I don't really see a big deal but other people do so anyway put the wire mesh in and then I screwed it in but I was very worried about this cuz I don't know how well they help it on so I went and I got myself some tapc and I drilled through to make sure that that was going to be very secure so anytime you're doing a job like this it's good to know what goes on behind the scenes because I'm always worried about something falling down now I called up my buddy out in Orange California Jamie bargan and he has a site Jam's Visions in stone uh check that out on YouTube and on Facebook and I asked him what he does out in California and he said basically the same thing puts his black paper on first then he puts his wire mesh on then he puts his coats on and then he sticks his Stone to it so uh check his uh I'll leave the description on but anyway and then I also like to by Nature as I'm going put another screw in there so there's always something else holding that stone on uh you don't have to do it but it depends on how big the job is if it's a small job no but you have to you have to do it as you go but I just wanted to point this out how this kind of system worked in this case every system is different sometimes you don't need any of that stuff you just go against the Block it's just as good if I go against the block I usually do the same thing every once in a while I'll I'll put a little uh plug in and something else to make sure that stone don't fall off in the future so what I'm doing now is uh I got a piece of limestone and I'm going to make a shelf and I got to put it up against the wall before I put the wire [Music] [Applause] on I get the bracket put right in there like that screw them right to the [Music] wall now I am putting my cement on I get it so far I scratch it just like in my other videos like that and I'm making my marks where my studs are in case I have to do that later on y now we went up and we got a p a pallet Stone right here and we got the husband and wife and they're only arguing a little bit so we're doing good we're washing it off turn it around every time you get stone you got to wash it off and then we're just piling it up see we're uh we're going to mix a a dark mortar or black cement so I had to go by a black cement I'm using one full bucket of sand and a half a bucket of uh dark mortar it's on the inside so they also sell dyes I'm going to have to do a video about that someday just like that now I know there's slats going down here and there's styrofoam against it because it's a block wall so I'm using a drill bit and some tapc and sometimes a steel nail and I drill and I know that's going to go right through there into the concrete wall to hold this thing a little bit more little bit more security back here and just like my first video I'm using the same kind of stone it's called West Mountain Stone from Ginos and it's real Stone it's a Sandstone so it cuts real easy just like that I'm not only using I'm not using the saw much only around the windows and around the top that's where I use this saw that's the same thing I just face it you see it gives it a a nicer uh nicer look and same thing just going in this is actually wet from the day before so I don't have to be using water on it that's all I'm doing just sticking it on not using a lot of Saw marks and and I personally just like to fill the holes in same way uh real simple this is black cement that's what they wanted because we have to match another fireplace over there and then every once in a while I just use me regular deck screw like this see that that's just a deck scroll my little insurance policy so nothing's changing we just use the back of the paintbrush or your finger and a rubber glove make sure it's all pressed in there that's all just like that get your paintbrush go over it like that one two three three then get your sponge over the top of it clean it up that's real Stone right there and the reason we're using real stone is we went to the Cory we couldn't get the bigger stuff because it was all used up so we had to pick the small stuff St we bought it in uh some of it we bought like you seen and then the other stuff we uh they had is little storage thing as we're getting closer to the top every once in a while you got a saw one you got to mark it the side and we just put a little cement on it shove it in but uh my rule of th is uh and a couple people ask me I always go one two stones you see and I break it sometimes I go three one two I'll break it here's a spot here I break it you don't want big long lines going through you want to keep breaking it up so when you you look at it there's not like l L going through you want to break it up into a pattern now I'm going to make another comment here uh this right here is the back end of wire mesh it fell off of a wall That's the front plaster right there now they want you to use dimpled wire mesh this is my opinion and all that does is create more weight and the whole idea behind these walls is to have as least much weight as possible so I don't really agree with it and that's why so the point is rust never sleeps cement Falls away I would rather put regular wire mesh on I would rag to put my stone on and use a deck screw you can't use uh sheetrock screws cuz they snap deck screws are a lot better or better yet if you're going you're up in a chimney or something or something outside stainless screws are better yet so that's my opinion uh it's a good idea to always had a little extra reinforcement I'm going to show you something else one last thing when we went up to Quarry I couldn't find enough Stone so I was looking for stone like this that seemed to basically make two pieces out of one like that and then basically I just face my stone and that also decreases weight but the whole reason to do these walls is to decrease weight and not acrease it that's why I don't agree with the dimple L just my opinion uh so I hope you enjoyed the video I keep trying to throw some more stuff in so you get an idea of what's really going on
