STOL Competition - World Record Shortest Landing 9 Feet 5 Inches

[Music] this is the style short takeoff and landing competition held in Valdez Alaska which is a competition to showcase pilots and planes flying at their peak performance the purpose of the contest is to takeoff and land a plane in the shortest possible distance Valdez is well-suited for the stall contest because the area has a steady sea breeze and the runways at sea level plus it's a little cooler than some other places all of which is conducive to great airplane performance the biggest thing may be that steady sea breeze which is just a constant wing that the pilots can fly into well I have no doubt the conditions were just right on the day as Frank Knapp set a new world record in 2017 for both takeoff and landing in a highly modified 1939 little Piper Cub taking off in just 14 feet 7 inches and winning the competition with a world record-setting 10 feet five-inch landing and then to give you an idea just how short that really is he pretty much took off and landed the plane and just over the length of the plane itself Knapp won the competition and set a new record with his ten-foot five-inch landing the 14 foot 7 inch take-off was pretty impressive too now just when you thought landing a fixed-wing aircraft in 10 feet 5 inches was impressive at the 2018 Stoll competition another pilot by the name of Dan Reynolds set a new world record landing in 95 inches a whole foot shorter than Frank knack Frank and Dan were able to achieve these short landings by having a highly modified small and light aircraft and by using the ground effect technique which is increased lift and decreased aerodynamic drag that the aircraft wings generate when they are close to the ground when close to the ground such as landing the grand effect can give the pollak the feeling that the aircraft is floating on a cushion of air and the closer the wings are in regards to the ground the more pronounced the ground effect becomes now the competition might be called Stoll short takeoff and landings but the way Frank and Dan took off and landed in almost the length of their planes they would be far better suited for a VTOL competition which is vertical takeoff endings anyway that's in this video thanks for watching and we'll see you next time bye bye [Music]

Practially the ground length of the runway or landing space is an important factor, however, planes travel through air. A strong headwind will shorten the landing distance. Is the world record awarded to the wind or the pilot?

Hey this is the type of plane they have in the battlefield games. They all fly at 30 miles per hour.

I feel like this depends too heavily on wind to set records. Even a couple of knots difference in the wind could make a big difference at the speeds these planes are taking off at.

A low-wing pusher would seem to have an immense advantage in this competition. The wing placement would dramatically increase wing-in-ground effect, and the engine placement would shift the CG back and therefore increase the amount of braking torque that can be applied.

But both also reduce the natural flight stability, so… probably not gonna happen.
