strangely enough their love and relationship lasted until his death it seems that Steve McQueen sped his entire life trying to prove to himself that he was loved the lack of love from his mother and dead that he experienced as a youngster seemed to affect his relationship with others his competition with men if it was on the racetrack or competing for an acting part it was not enough for a woman to love him she had to constantly prove her love by accepting anything that he did eventually it destroyed the relationships on the other hand Steve was a good father he seemed to be determined to be the dead that he didn't have nearly stated that even when her and Steve's relationship was rocky he was always a good father to their children Steve McQueen had made a racing movie that was very close to his heart call LeMans between once said he didn't know if he was an actor trying to be a race driver or if he was a race driver trying to act although it was considered to be one of the best racing movies made by race drivers the movie lost money and in 1973 McQueen made two movies that restored his career Papillon I considered to be one of his best movies with Dustin Hoffman now Hoffman was paid one-and-a-half million for this movie and McQueen was paid two million for his performance his next movie was the getaway with Ali MacGraw now Annie had just become a star from the movie love in the tower in infernal now after that was finished and twenty six films behind him he became the highest-paid star in the world he decided that he had had enough for the next four years mcqueen refused to read a script or even discuss a movie he spent his time riding motorcycles race car surfing with his kids and at the age of 44 McQueen was enjoying himself McGraw at the age of 35 was tired of playing housewife and wanted to get back to making these the two were divorced in 1978 in 1979 Steve returned to acting first he plays Tom Horn about a real-life Western hired gun now during discovered spots on his lungs and recommended that cedars-sinai hospital for further tests they diagnosed miss ophelia a form of lung cancer caused from breathing asbestos spores or dust then for Barbara there would be no treatment now the doctors Barbara said lied to her and said he had a few years more to live but they secretly told Steve that it was only a few months the doctors told him
