being successful is what everybody want everybody i know want to be two things they want to be happy and they want to be successful success you get your degree that's successful you get a job that's with you if god was through with you you wouldn't wake up no more but he keeps waking you up cause he still has something for you that you've yet to receive but you have to start living your life in expectation you have got to start expecting great things to happen for you in order for it to happen it is the law of attraction it is real it is nothing fake about it the bible says a man is as he thinking if you live your life in expectations that's what happens to you if you live your life in despair that's what happens to you if you say all men are dogs you're going to meet every last one of locked up i couldn't go to the store i i i just studied profusely it was a horrible experience how many times has god showed you something in your imagination that you thought was so wonderful and then you took it in that to your family and your friends and you shared it with them and they shot it down you know why they shot it down because they couldn't see it you know why they didn't see it because god didn't show it to them he showed it to you god put it in your imagination he don't put it in other people's imagination stop telling your visions to other people because they're not going to see it why you think you keep imagining opening a business why you keep imagining graduating getting a better job why do you keep imagining buying a house why do you keep imagining driving a really nice car why do you keep imagining getting rich one day why do you keep imagining that because god is talking to you he's showing you something that he has for you he puts it in your imagination man see god is good man you got to understand how good god is he ain't playing with you he the real deal he created you and then he even showed you what he got for you [Music] you got to start believing in your imagination you got to start talking to him about these stuff you be seeing but you have not cause you asked not so if you see the vision the imagination but you don't ask god for what you telling you right now if god can fix steve harvey and turn him into this i bet he can turn you into that if you want to be successful and you want to be happy those are the two things that's common to most most people you're looking at a person who was neither one of those for a long period of my life now it's a lot of a lot of pain in my life no more than nobody else i just had a lot but i learned along the way everything that's happening to you is god is processing every difficult moment you're having he just process it that's all he doing everything you're going through is preparing you for what you asked god for and if you need to be tough when you get to where you're going then he gonna toughen you if you got to be more caring along the way he gonna let you have some trials come your way that's gonna have to produce that in you what happened to my life was getting where i've gotten to today and where i'm even headed to i had to be tough so he toughened me along the way i had to learn how to appreciate a lot so he took everything to really understand the value of money i had none to just appreciate simple things what i'm gonna eat today what i'm gonna wash up at where i'mma bathe he sent me through a trial of being homeless for three years i lived in a car for three years all of that that i was going through that i was tripping with that i did not appreciate or understand i understand it now because i'm on the other side of them troubles and i understand what all them troubles was for and even though i did not understand or appreciate the route he took me on it was the route i had to go on see the route you on right now is the route you got to take and it's very uniquely yours this thing you're going through this is just uniquely yours you just got to understand you ain't the only one you ain't the only one going through it now in the order that it's going to happen that's yours see god made us very different this is this god we got god is amazing he created you so individually do you know that it's close to 8 billion people on earth now do you know that it's almost 8 billion people on earth do you know how many billions of people have died do you know that if you dig up all them people that have died and all the people that are presently here and every last one of them that he gonna make in the future not one of you have the same fingerprint who do that who could possibly be so precise in his infinite wisdom that he created you so uniquely that ain't no two people got the same fingerprint that's crazy man that's real crazy eight billion people you can't duplicate it the billions that then died you can't duplicate it and the ones that's coming will not duplicate it got a bad boy man he's a bad boy he's a bad dude man you know what i mean people are funny though man the way they try to do business hollywood is an ugly business man it's not it's not anything like any other job they do what they want to do and they create they make up a reason and a lot of it is can just you know a guy just don't like you but the one thing about me man i've always been resilient i've never been afraid to reinvent myself and here's here's the key for everybody when someone closes a door in your face all you have to remember is when god allows them to close the door in your face all god wants you to do is walk up the hall it's some modos you just got to walk up the hall cause i can promise you he got a better door that he wants you to go through than one that got set in your face that's a fact that's a fact but what closed for a reason because god just wants you to walk up the hall because he got another dope it's bigger and when you open and get behind it you ain't gonna believe what's back there but you will never get to it if you stand in front of that door crying please open it back up help me my family stop go up the hall man these people are closed doors in your face they ain't the only dope they ain't the only dog god is the creator of all doors man i'm just gonna see what else he got for me i only worry about that here's another one don't put all your eggs in one basket oh this is a very dangerous one young people because now don't put all your eggs in one basket well that would depend on what your basket is made of wouldn't it if you got it in the right basket you've got to put all your eggs in one basket how else you gonna make it success is a all-out assault it's everything you got into one direction in order for it to be successful you can't open up sick businesses at the same time you got to open up one pull your all into that you can't go get you got to go to college to get a degree you can't enroll in six colleges you got to focus man put all your eggs in one basket make your basket out of work hard work faith prayer put all that in that basket glue that thing together and put them eggs in that basket so you can be what you want to be cause you're not gonna be successful if you don't put all your effort into one thing you ain't gonna make it man success is difficult the road to success is always under construction it ain't never easy it ain't clear it ain't open you got to do that and be wary of this one right here though always have a plan b let me tell you why i never have a plan b see do this so you'll have something to fall back on oh you can go do that but do this so you'll have something to fall back on let me tell you something in order to really be successful people who really got it going on they focused on one thing bill gates did microsoft until he got plenty money now he didn't do anything he wanted to do but he did microsoft he did microsoft you can believe that the dude that came up with google he was making google he made google they'll be made yahoo they did they they did that till it turned in some then it branched out plan b in order to have a plan b you have to take time away from plan a to prepare plan b so when i was gonna tell these jokes until i turned them into a money making venture october 8th 1985 i walked in hilarity's comedy club i won amateur night for 50 i went to work the next day i quit my job my first wife said this is ridiculous we got these twins you can't quit your job i got to go this is it this is all i've been dreaming about i see a way a light bulb went on hey man what i won when i won that night i cried for an hour all the way home i cried because it was like man god i see it now just what i've been waiting on i walked into one comedy club one fifty dollars went to work next day selling commonwealth life insurance quitting my job making 675 a week i made fifty dollars the first month in common i made 150 the first year in comedy i made 3 000 my wife left me i saw that coming myself i said her and her mama and her mama they made that joint decision together that every time i used to drive home you ain't gonna ever be nothing it took me years i lost everything i became homeless i lived in a car for three years the lord had mercy i just kept that plan hey i kept that plan amen i told these jokes i told these jokes i took a gig for 125 250 i drove 14 hours to make 175 gas was way cheaper back then so it made sense i go out there and do the gig man sent whatever money i could home so now i'm homeless i can't do nothing three years i lived in a car had an occasional hotel every now and then for three years i lived in a car you know i kept doing i kept telling them jokes but my family members would catch me steve come on home i call home ass for money steve come home get a real job i said no i'm gonna stay with it i'm be all right can you just can you why me fifty dollars can you why me 75. my brother said don't ever call me no more ask me for no more money i ain't got nothing for you you need to be a man and come home and get a real job so i couldn't call nobody no more for help because they said they weren't gonna help so cool i stayed out there look at me and i ain't bragging [Music] look how god do you know god is amazing if you keep the faith in the things that you cannot see god got something for you i ain't see this i didn't see this when i was living in the car i didn't see none of this man you know i'm an emotional dude you know i cried man because somebody asked me something i still trying to look on tv you crying let me tell you something if you knew my trip you cry too matter of fact every time you see me your ass all just bust out crying but i kept the faith i relied on god's grace i kept that plan a and i'm standing here today and i say to everybody if you learn those principles of success i don't care where your life is today the life you got playing for yourself the one god got mapped out way better than the one you truth about how to get from the back to the front how to come from the bottom to the top i'ma teach it to you today see my life ain't covered my life is smothered with grace i'ma tell you a story speech is going to be done using improper grammar because i don't have that either i ain't never really talked that good ain't really my thing if you in here you well spoken i commend you and you're gonna need that in a lot of places you're going you can't be a doctor and talk like this you know you you you you're not going no you're not you can't be a professor a teacher you can't be in the society that a lot of y'all trying to get in see they've been trying to change me for a long time when i first got on tv me and said the entertainer was on the steve harvey show and they hired i don't even know what they call it this lady uh the white lady came in and uh she was a linguist coach [Music] whatever and when she came in the room i was confused me and said was sitting there because she didn't have no pots with her or nothing because i thought that that was pasta so when she came in there with the linguist linguistics whatever i thought it was a cooking class for pasta so me and said sitting there looking just as crazy and the lady started telling me that they decided that you need to speak more properly you need to learn how to enunciate your words i stopped her i said do you mean pronunciate that lady look so confused this is a true story and she said no mr harvey if you hope to one day be in millions of homes across america you're going to have to be more verbally communicative and more understood i said that ain't that how i do she looks so confused she said you're gonna have to change the way you sound i said let me ask you something which one of these sound better to you i am broke or i'm is rich a lady shaking her head when you leave here young people my message is really for everybody in this building i want to challenge you to something today see i don't know what the theme of your graduation is you know you go to these places and they have fire and spirit they have a theme of excellence is worth excelling i don't know what your theme is i didn't ask nobody you know they might have emailed it to me but i got 2500 unread emails in my email box right now but i want to challenge you so what you've done up until now you've done has been an amazing accomplishment i take my hat off to you what you've accomplished shouldn't be playing short and you have so far to this point become successful but i'm challenging everybody in this graduating player i want you to be great i want you to go out here and be great you know different three great success great people change other people's lives great people put other people in front of them great people go back to their community and change lives great people buy a big house up on the hill and then teach other people how to get up on the hill too that's what great people do gandhi was great muhammad ali was great martin luther king was great they was great they made other people great muhammad ali said i said i was the greatest before i was the greatest you got to claim greatness man or you can just be successful go on get your job go on and make your money but man you change somebody's life you could be great we need somebody from asu to go up out of here and become great be a life changer change some boys lives some girl's life show somebody how you got a college degree that's the beginning of greatness and for the men in here just just let me take this off i'm sorry i grandmother was in the hospital dying and he wanted me to go seal i was young and she was dying she had terminal illness she knew she was dying she has a grandson to come see so i took him we go in the hospital room and you know she wasn't going to shave so i was standing behind him he was at her bed she said to him she said do you know your great grandfather's name my boy said no mom dude i don't know his name she said you know why you don't know his name he said why am i here she said cause he ain't leaving [Music] she said when you walk away from my bed you ain't gonna see me she said go live your life so your children's grandchildren will know your name live a life where your children's grandchildren would know who you was man that they know your name but they ain't gonna know your name if you wasn't great they ain't gonna know your name if you don't leave them something you cannot leave your family your job my mom and dad as great as they were they left me empty-handed but boy the church she put in me the god she put in me my father instilled in me manhood do what you say you gonna do them two things from that sunday school teacher and that coal miner shaped inform who hanging on the wall take this degree and go change some lives with it make it up put pressure on yourself go out there and and ask god to help make you great don't go be regular i don't really care for record i never really wanted a life i wanted an extraordinary life i've been asking god for this my whole life now what he gave me is grace way more than i ever asked for i ain't never thought i'd be look i already know y'all could have had a bigger star come down here somebody with a bigger name could have no no you couldn't no you could not i don't even know why i said that look at bottom line there's a lot of diverse people in here but i can't tell you some i love black people i love black people my entire i ain't never shined away from the fact that i was black i starred on beat i still go on bt i know where it come from black people made me famous first i crossed over but my crossover was different i built a bridge and i let everybody come over here see how i am but i didn't get on the bridge and go over there because see when the bridge burned down you got to be able to get back home i never left home so i've been this here the whole time that's no disrespect to anybody sitting in here i just gotta talk real with you now if you didn't want real you should have somebody else come down here but this is the truth of the matter i want you to learn how to fail and win buying you laptops and iphones and sneakers and all that they hoping with everything in them that this degree flips the script that you one day buy them a tv and another house if if look i got seven kids all seven of my kids either graduated or they in college now you know why i send them to school so they pay me back that's the only reason i just i just want my money back if they could just give me a roi or return on investment give me the money i jumped into y'all just give it back to me not how much paper i don't spend on these kids of mine but you got to learn how to fail and win anyway you got to overcome so now here's a lesson behind every moment of adversity every single moment of adversity in your life two things are going to happen there's going to be a lesson and there's going to be a blessing you got to wait on both them if you let the adversity crumble if you focus on the adversity you will lay there and wallow in the fact that you have failed because failure coming but life is ten percent what happened to you it's 90 what you do about it man so what you fail it's not really failure though every time you fail it's a valuable talk learned experience that makes you you only tell you it was god god put it there he put it there to show you a preview of a coming attraction he has for you this whole time you've been imagining stuff it was god been showing you something he got for you your problem is though you tell your imagination to the wrong people see if you want to kill your big dreams tell it to a small-minded person oh oh they shoot it down every more education more training and man this can change your world you know how many all that had this wonderful idea and you went in there and took it to that so-called friend and loved one and they shot it down and because you thought they loved you you thought they had your best interest at heart so you believed them man they was wrong they was wrong if god had wanted it in they had he to put it in they had he put your imagination in your head don't let this degree mess up your imagination [Music] your greatness is in your imagination now let me tell you how this works everything you have in here today everything you are is simply because you imagined it and you believed you said you got a college degree you're getting a degree today because you imagined it but guess what you believed different it's the one you imagined would look good on your head you believed it that's the one you got how about that outfit you want that's the one you know what that outfit was just on a coat hanger somewhere it was just dangling on the coat hanger you imagined it on your body you believed it would look good on you that's the one you got that car you drive everybody make you buy that car it was a whole lot of cars on that lot you went in there you imagined yourself driving off the lot in that car if you'd imagine the rolls-royce he'd have probably gave you that one but now you wanted the prius so now you're driving off the lot in the prius see i am a product of prayer i'm a product of grace mercy forgiveness my mama prayed for me all so here i stand the product of that but let me tell you something else though i'm also a product of my imagination see i imagine somebody faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen your imagination is the evidence of things not seen because in your imagination can nobody see it but you now if you're in here and you think you're too old to hear what i'm saying to you my best example is kentucky fried chicken i don't know if you noticed the picture of the man on the bucket but he owed he ain't 30 years old colonel oh colonel had been telling people his whole life i got the best chicken in the world ain't nobody believe him they didn't give him a franchise till he was in his 60s kentucky fried chicken sell more chicken than anybody in the world so if you're sitting in here thinking you're too old ask you a question when you go to the movie and you get that real earth and you get your popcorn and you sit down before the movie start what do they show you a preview of a coming attraction have you ever seen a preview and the movie ain't come out or the movie coming out whether you go or not the movie coming out whether you like the trailer or not that movie do 100 million at the box office you might not like the actor that actor get an oscar for that movie the mall of the story the next time your heavenly father shows you a preview go to the movie you're probably starring in it i bet you'll like it when you get out there appreciate y'all having me thank you the biggest thing that always troubled me was my imagination because it was so big when i was a kid you know i grew up poor but i was always imagining stuff you know my mama once a month would buy a travel magazine at the grocery store my father used to be so pissed off bill why are we spending this money we ain't got we were poor she said slick wing got no money to take this boy nowhere but if he can look in these magazines maybe one day it'll it'll it'll cause him to want to travel on the track i've been to so many countries around the world because of that magazine i just wanted to go see stuff my mama had enough sense to plant that seed it's like at christmas time we used to get in the car my daddy used to take us to the suburbs so we could see the lights and you know we just drove around the lights and i could i was amazed at the suburbs because i would see these big houses with horseshoe driveways where you drove in and came out the other side you know in the hood you pull in the yard and you back your ass back out i did not understand who the hell that made these driveways where you can go in one side and come out so i told my daddy one time he's riding i said daddy why don't we get one of them houses he said boy i ain't got no money for that but that's what i'm bringing you out here for she said one day you'll be able to get one of them houses let me explain something to you because of that right there i've probably had in my lifetime now about 11 homes i got full now in different states every house i own got horseshoe drive if the house ain't got no heart street driveway i don't want it cause i just didn't i could not understand why we was backing our ass out this driveway when they was living they told me one time they were sitting up watching tv my daddy looked at my mom and said bill he called my mama billy said can you believe that this little boy we had on tv she said slick i can't believe this i used to send my daddy five thousand dollars a week you know when i first got on tv i was making fifty five thousand a week so i sent my mom and him five thousand a week when i got into kings of comedy my father was still living i showed my daddy one time how much money i made he said boy take me four years make this kind of money so i was able to give them something with my life i always wanted god to just lift me up so before my mom and them left this world i could give them something i bought them everything man housing card furniture i bought them everything i could think try you know what's crazy man i'm 62 years old i still want to be proud of me i'm still hoping that they in heaven watch me and they see me turn into something that's all i ever wanted it was in my imagination to take care of them everything that's in your imagination god gonna make it come true for you you just got to believe that god make dreams come true he take pro kids with speech impediments and put them all over tv you take drug dealers and turn them into doctors if god can do that for me explain to me how he can't do it for you you just got to believe man don't ever give up and keep believing cause god is real don't you listen to nobody telling you god ain't real they the lost they ever loving mind god is more real than anybody i know if it wasn't for god i wouldn't even be here today i have a friend that has been having a challenge with losing weight both of us have been dealing with that challenge and for the past 40 years he's always seemed like weighed over 235 pounds and so he said man i just can't lose weight i'm big boned it i say bud i've never seen any fat skeletons no you need to act on your health you can change this you don't have to go to your grave fat we're all digging early grades with our teeth we don't have to do this they need to have a support group around eminem peanuts you want a support group on something and throw snickers in there too but i can tell you about the help we need with that so what happened with bud though he became ill a few weeks ago see blood in the last few weeks has lost more weight than he's ever lost even when we were competing with each other betting a lot of money but what happened was bud became diabetic he went into an insulin shock he didn't know that he was diabetic his blood sugar became high and the doctor said to him you are diabetic you're gonna have to have insulin shots every day you're gonna have to change your diet and let me tell you what's gonna happen if you don't do what we tell you to do number one there's a possibility that you can become an amputee number two you can go blind three you can become impotent but say help me like those guys with paul when paul broke out of jail those guys say tell me what i must do to be saved what would be say i said bud you wanted one of my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches i said but i can't believe you're eating vegetables man you're exercising he said that's right a jogging in place too now he had the ability to do it before but there are some people it takes that kind of crisis to bring them into reality in order for them to act in their own best interest some people have to hit rock bottom in order to rise i don't know why you want to begin to look out on your life and what you want for you and i think that when we begin to focus in the area of what does it take for us to act i think we can say events can inspire us to act at that particular event in his life circumstances friend of mine he wanted to do something and and he just did not have the motivation and the drive and the confidence within himself but his circumstances change overnight through an acquisition of the company that he worked for he lost his job through the inspiration of desperation he had to act see life also things that can inspire us that see we don't have the courage and that's what it takes courage it takes guts to do that which you know you need to do if you don't have the courage to act life many times will move on you and make you out life will whoop your butt so bad you will be so miserable you will catch so much hell you say yes i will do it what do you want me to do take me [Music] a friend of mine say i can't stop smoking i can't stop smoking doctor said sound max raj you have emphysema sam never picked up another cigarette and said look at those stupid people smoking sam you did it for 35 years how can you talk about people well i was different i'm trying to help them [Laughter] they don't have to do the same thing i did but be compassionate itself isn't it interesting how quickly we forget so i'm saying that look at something in your life it might be just writing a letter to somebody to say thank you it might be just to apologize to somebody i had a confrontation in the penobscot building with a security guard there he responded to me what i perceived as a negative way and he and i engaged in an argument i did not like the way i handled that i avoided going through the front door for a long time because i didn't want to face him finally i decided to act and i went up to him and said i want to apologize to you for the way in which i handled this argument we had the other day i was wrong i hope you accept my apology he said i do and i said thank you very much i felt relief now when you decide to act it's not always going to be like that a friend of mine did some work for me it was below par to say the least i knew that this guy was capable of doing better work i knew that he also had a fragile ego so i was trying to think of what is the most sensitive way in which i can share this information with him because i wanted him to do my work over i was going to pay him for what he did but i needed my work done right but i was afraid that i would hurt his feelings i was very very meticulous and i approached him and i said let me share this with you you know i care about you and that you're a very talented and gifted person and you and i both know that what you have given me is not a true reflection of your talents and abilities and i'm saying let's go back in the studio and do this again and he said to me i'm going to forget you ever said that i was wiped out he never spoke to me again now when you decide to act you're gonna have some people like that we're no longer friends i lost sleep over that ladies and gentlemen i said i can't believe that i remember setting up one night looking at the phone i said i gotta call him said no i said don't forget that i caught man looking we've been knowing each other too long to allow this to come between us he said don't call me anymore hung up and then i i wanted to think about how what can i do to make it up to him and then something came to me less what do you have to prove see many things we don't do is because the fact we want people to like us there's some necessary losses in life when you decide acting in your best interest you're going to lose some friends it's whatever it is that you want to do you want to do it massively have a friend who was telling me that his sales were down i said well how many phone calls you make a day he said 25 i said double them make 50 or 75 or 100. he said oh man that's just too much what do you mean too much you behind on your bills you talk about too much you know one way to get back on your feet real quick is to miss two car payments there's no competition out here decide that you're going to push yourself most people won't do that most people give up on themselves easily you know the human spirit is powerful this nothing is powerful it's hard to kill the human spirit there's benjamin israeli a man who became the head of a country at a time when jews were not allowed out after 10 o'clock he said how did you do it how did you achieve against such great odds [Music] he said nothing can resist the will of a people that will stake even their existence on the extent of their purpose for good that when you have a made-up mind when you decide that you want to do something i was reading something the other day he said the power to hold on in spite of everything the power to endure this is the winner's quality the hunger the ability to face defeat again and again without giving up this is a winner's quality you have that quality within you when you're hungry you don't care about the facts you don't care about the art there's greatness in you and you've got to learn how to tune out the critics outside and the critic inside and since i'm going to do this i'm going to harness my will and i'm not going to let anything stop me i deserve this i'm going to do it until and this friend i told him says start increasing your calls i said i make a hundred calls a day the other thing is that if you want something you have got to be relentless [Music] you've got to learn how to become resourceful you've got to learn how to become creative when crisis is striking your life and in the chinese language crisis mean danger but it also means opportunity and this is an opportunity for you to grow and you've got to be so relentless regardless of what comes down the pike that you're always looking for a way to get over always looking for a way that you can break and always looking for a way that you can strike a telling blow live your life with passion with some drive you've got to watch the the people the relationships that you develop how people of of kindred mindsets if you're around folk who are dead and negative all the time they will affect you you want people that around you that have smiles on their faces looking good so you've got to watch your continents watch your face have an uplifted expression watch your body posture all of these things affect you psychically you got to be the kind of person that you are fearless you are unstoppable and because you're unstoppable because you've got power that you haven't even begin to use yet you are to yourself to release your brakes how many of you had the experience of pulling out of your driveway and you're matched on the accelerator and the car was just going uh you couldn't move and you matched harder and it couldn't move and then you discovered you had your emergency brakes on and then you release those emergency brakes and it goes true have you ever had that experience before most of us go through life with our brakes on holding back not giving all that we have not sharing all of ourselves most of us go to our grave still holding on rather than releasing it what are some of those things that that keep us from releasing it because of past experiences past defeats past pain we look back well it didn't work out then it probably won't work out now many people get confused their performances with who they are that if my speech tonight doesn't work it doesn't mean that i'm a bad speaker it means that what i did didn't work tonight and i've got to separate what i do from who i am and i've got another shot see the last chapter to your life has not been written yet and it doesn't matter about what happened yesterday it doesn't matter about the things that you've done that you feel guilty about if you wouldn't do it today you're convicting an innocent person [Music] you
