STEEL CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

hi I'm Doug canny professional shooter for over 30 years and today I want to talk to you about steel challenge what is the steel challenge it is what it sounds like it's all steel there's 8 to 10 stages depending on the size of the match and where it is and what level it is but it's all fixed steel it's the same course of fire the same stages you're going to have four shoot targets and a stop plate so you're going to engage each Target and then you're going to hit the stop plate last and it's all done by time fastest time wins so all the stages except for outer limits you're going to shoot five runs or five strings and you're going to throw your worst one out you start on roundabout you're going to shoot string one string two string three string four string five it's really cool that way the fact that you can kind of of build a score you can kind of get warmed up and get a little faster hopefully each run but you don't have to knock the steel down so any hit Edge hit any type of hit on the steel is a score is a hit on the plate so I had four good runs and I pushed the last one just to see if I could make up maybe a quarter a second and soon as I missed the first shot doing that you know I knew I knew that run was pretty much hammered so I I kind of went for it on the last one so it can get very fast with the top shooters so the Ros have to really be on their heels some of the strings we're shooting five shots in under two seconds on five different plates steel challenge matches are all about speed and accuracy each Miss can add a second to your time which can be the difference between winning or losing it's a known course of fire so that way if you find out a local Club has a match I'm here in Florida and Valia County runs uh a weekly steel challenge match and and typically also a big monthly match we just finished up the state shoot they have all the stages set up there really is no power factor so basically if your gun runs you can shoot it and the other nice thing about steel challenge is there's a lot of different divisions we have Rimfire we have Rimfire rifle iron sight Rimfire rifle Optical Rimfire rifle rim fire handgun Optical and open sight we've got carry Optics class we've got limited single back open so all the classifications you see on the handgun side and even rifle side in USPSA translates over the steel challenge but they started out with the rim fire for the kids to get them involved but it's really jumped on for everybody cuz everybody loves to shoot 22s so if you got that 1022 rifle 22 pistol and you haven't shot it in years take it to the range set up a stage look for a club near you that's got steel Challenge and I know you're going to have a blast I'm Doug kanig for David Gallery of Guns and I hope to see you on the Range
