get back get back get back hey everyone I'm Doug Cy professional shooter for over 30 years and today I want to talk to you about long range shooting and the two organizations that predominantly run the matches in the United States we've got the precision rifle series and the National Rifle league if you go on their prospective websites you'll find everything they have on the schedule for two-day National matches down the one- day Regional match and you'll even find some local matches the precision rifle series it's a long range accuracy game you're going to engage targets anywhere from 300 to probably 1,500 yards I mean you might get some longer ones occasionally some shorter ones but that's about the gist of it it's a very active physical long range rifle shooting sport you're going to encounter matches where you've got multiple positions with multiple targets at multiple varying distances so you're going to be using a set fixed time limit anywhere from 2 minutes as about the max that you see nowadays down to 90 seconds so you'll start with a magazine in the gun the range officer give you the command you'll get the beat and you may have three positions and three targets and you have to go you know far to near near to far or whatever that situation is in that time limit so what makes that difficult is you have to be able to move in and out positions well build a position when you get into that situation whether it's with your bags a bipod tripod whatever you're going to be shooting off of how to get a super stable platform then you've got to find the targets and then you've got to know the conditions and know your rifle know what your zero is have all your dope from a Kestrel or an app on the phone like a four off Hornady app and that tells you what your drops are going to be at all the various yardages so typically in a PRS match you're going to get shown where the targets are you're going to also get the distances of the target so you can put all that information into your ballistics calculator and then transfer that to your dope card which is what I do and it's exactly that I put everything on there that way when the course of fire starts I know what my come UPS or my come Downs are so I can do that effectively so some of the equipment that you need you need a good bipod this is an atlas bipod you really need a good bipod you need at least two bags in my opinion you'll see me 90% of the time use this lightweight Armageddon gear bag that I wear around my waist and I can move it in position put it under my arm use it for a good rear support and then I also use the Armageddon gear this is a schmedium bag okay it's kind of a heavy fill and this is what I'll use as my front bag if I'm not using a bipod you'll see it set up on barricades laying flat on tubes and different positions that's what I use about 90% of the time now there's all sorts of other bags and equipment that you can get but you don't need it I mean they may come in handy it various times but it's not 100% necessary that you need that so the rifle that I'm shooting is a Ruger custom shop rpr now this gun with the loophole Mark 5 HD with the PR2 reticle is really set up for the production class so what is the production class the production class is your firearm and your optic cannot exceed $5,000 so you have a floor of 2500 for the rifle and a floor for 2500 for the optic anything above that you're an Open Class then they also have a tactical class which is 308 or 223 so this is the custom shop rpr this is a new gun that was launched at the end of 2020 it's got an APA breake a 1 in S stainless Barrel in the six Creed Mo you can see the barricade stop it's got the still the idex of safety but really important it's it's got the trigger Tech two-stage trigger now I've added some weight to add you know make the gun a little bit heavier which is a little better balancing off of the barricades and situations like that and a little bit of weight in the butt stock I shoot six Creed Mo 65 creedmore is very popular and then in the open classes you'll see more of the Wildcats the 6br six Dasher 6gt things like that they're all great calibers you don't have to go that route like I said I love shooting production class you can shoot this rifle uh right from the factory comes ready to go accuracy is phenomenal I'm getting 5 6 in groups at 1,000 yards I shoot the Hornady 110 a tips I do handload but the 108 uh ELD match shoot absolutely phenomenally so this is my setup now what you're seeing is the little brother to this this is the Ruger Rimfire rpr and the reason I have this out here is there's also another division the Precision Rimfire series both the NRL and the PRS have a Rimfire Division and this Ruger Precision Rimfire fits in the production class again you can shoot open class production class you're going to shoot distances anywhere from 25 to now they shoot sometimes out to 400 yards you're going to shoot smaller targets but essentially the game's the same you're going to have multiple positions to shoot from so you're going to want a good bipod you're going to use the same bags the same equipment and you're going to obviously want to know the dope of your 22 rounds at all these distances cuz it's really uh magnified and especially with the wind you really want to know the wind the other reason not only for shooting the matches but this is predominantly how I do my training I always do most of my training my positional work with my 22 rim fire I can do it here at my home range and it's all about working on the position positions working with my bags building positions it's not as much about recoil management it's about in and out of the positions quickly getting my timing down you know it's a great great way and I still have to know to read the wind have trajectory depending on what targets I'm shooting at on the Range so again 80% of my practice is done with the rim fire so you don't have to shoot a lot of expensive Center fire ammunition to get trained up you can do it with a really good rim fire okay so that's really what I do in practice and I'll set up different props you can use a step letter that's one thing about the PRS game is nothing's off limits you could shoot off of absolutely anything rocks logs hay bales uh steps cooler it doesn't matter whatever the match director wants you to try to shoot off if he's trying to do more of a field style course or if he's trying to do more of a you know real prop you might shoot off a cattle gate there's just all sorts of stuff that you could use so you don't have to have anything specific this is a little three gun wall that they use and a piece of pipe and uh I come out here tomorrow bring a step ladder and work on going up and down the runks just stuff like like that so all you have to do is work with your bags work your positions work your timing get steady and you can do a ton of work with a 22 rim fire
