exactly a year ago in 2023. Of course back then  it was just the Steam Deck as only one model   existed. However Valve unexpectedly released  Steam Deck OLED on November 16th 2023. So my   original Steam Deck wasn't with me for long - just  about 9 months. During that time I've purchased   a huge number of accessories and even upgraded  the internal SSD to 1 TB. This is how the whole   process looked. It took me about 2 hours - it's  not as easy as I thought it would be and while   doing it you will also lose your device warranty  so be careful. It was quite a process and while   doing it and reading stories of people who ended  up breaking their Steam Deck. I decided that it   was my first and last time doing it. Let's focus  on the new model cause luckily for me it has a 1   TB SSD - no need to disassemble your Steam Deck  with losing warranty and the risk of breaking   it. This new model has been around for over 4  months now and it's a lot to cover compared to   the original. Let's first discuss the original  Steam Deck. It's currently the most successful   portable PC handheld on the market. The press  claims Valve sold over 2 million consoles so   far. Also it's always in the top sellers list on  Valve's game platform Steam. You can see here it's   in the top two. It never usually goes below top  three so that's that's pretty cool. The original   model came out on February 25th 2022. This device  has an AMD Zen2 Gen 2 processor along with 16 GB   of RAM and AMD RDNA2 GPU. The original Steam Deck  came in three different models 64 GB eMMC storage   which is slower. 256 GB NVMe SSD storage which  is much faster and 512 GB NVMe SSD which Valve   claimed was even faster and an anti- glare screen.  The prices here in the UK for the original model   varied depending on what model you go for it  was either $349 $459 or $569. I have a number   of friends who purchased the cheapest model and  then just manually swapped an SSD inside as a   screen and all internals are the same between 64  and 256 gig models. It's not a great idea if you   buy 256 GB model and then swap the SSD like I did  so I would advise against it to better understand   the next iteration of the steam deck we first  have to understand what made the original steam   deck so popular during its first year valve has  deployed over 100 updates showing that an early   access game console can actually be worth money  essentially it's just a handheld gaming PC just   like many others on the market yeah it's not going  to turn into a Nintendo Switch or Playstation Vita   also you never 100% sure if a game will work  and keep working before you pay for it. But   if you're that person you know the one who is  upset by Vita's unfulfilled potential or just   wish switch was a bit more powerful to be able  to run games like Cyberpunk 2077 or God of War   the the steam deck has got you covered it's  also a device that many reviewers called the   backlog killer meaning it will help you tackle  the ever growing BC game backlog and it will   come at a price that you cannot beat I mean it's  arguably the most powerful gaming PC you can get   your hands on for 400 bucks but the same power  as a PS4 pretty cool right so if we compare the   devices side by side their packaging is identical  I love that valve ships this in a non-transparent   cardboard box that is also a box of the device so  that's pretty smart and eco-friendly and you can   see here that the new Steam Deck OLED has a new  slogan your games in a whole new light so valve   here also redesigned the packaging a little bit  to emphasize on the new OLED screen so they have   this rainbow effect on the packaging that looks  amazing and I also like the small Touches for   the outer box outer shell of the new Steam Deck  OLED you can see here that the center circle is   orange and you'll also be able to see this on the  new buttons on the steam deck the power button is   orange as well and what I really adore this  clever engineering of while they've put this   second case inside the first case of the steam  deck to make it more compact because many people   told them that they have issues with uh their big  case transporting it so they thought like we we   we'll give you a new case uh that is detachable  from the original case and it looks amazing in   my opinion they explain this in their video and  you also get this really nice polishing cloth and   this pouch for uh the charger and cables with  the steam deck OLED I love those really nice   touches that valve sep operates their product  lines just a little bit and encourages users   to buy a more premium product now we can get to  the best part of this review and it's comparing   the displays you can see very clearly on videos  that one of the displays is more glossy than   the other but the truth is the display at the  bottom is actually the new antiglare display of   the steam deck OLED and the display of the top  is a display of a regular steam deck de LCD and   the fun thing about it is that the display at the  top actually has a third-party anti-glare coating   so you can actually see how much better it is  than the original uh valves coating but what's   really interesting that many gamers do not like  the antiglare coating on their displays and it's   understandable because it transforms how you see  the light and it also distorts the color and the   pixel density so it's very very very clear on  the comparison shots under the microscope you   might not be able to see it with normal regular  eye but the thing is it's very clear so uh the   comparison here is not very honest in terms of the  color Reflections and light Reflections but it's   important to say that the types of the screen  here are different and it's very obvious so the   bottom one is OLED and you can see how much  more vibrant and how much more prominent are   darker colors you can see here the top steam deck  has the colors a bit washed out that is because   of the use of the LCD display one of the major  advantages of a noet are the decreased uh power   consumption smaller weight and because of all of  those things the steam deck weighs lighter and   lasts longer it's also important to note that you  are sensible to display shim you can actually see   this on this video right now that the bottom  OLED display is a bit wobbling it's updating   because it's a different display technology and  it can actually cause strain to your eyes so we   have to be careful while choosing the type of the  display with the update the seam deck olet offers   several upgrades over its predecessor I really  loved the video that valve published where they   were talking about different considerations  and plans for the upgrade the most notable   improvements are in the display the new energy  efficient chip with improved improved Cooling and   improved Wi-Fi 6E connectivity the OLED display  delivers deeper blacks and a brighter screen   significantly enhancing the gaming experience  games with Artistic Styles that utilize negative   space and black for contrast such as Hollow KN  or Hades are particularly impressive on this new   OLED screen the OLED screen also has a larger  size moving from 7 in to 74 in in high refresh   rate increasing from 60 to 90 HZ which results in  more fluid gameplay it's incredible that it all   comes with for almost the same price in terms of  connectivity the Wi-Fi has been greatly improved   this upgrade is particularly important for those  who frequently play online games on the steam deck   especially if you have a router capable of taking  full advantage of the improved Wi-Fi 6E there are   two antennas for 2.4 GHz and either 5 GHz or F  6 GHz simultaneously my home network is still on   Wi-Fi 6 but I'm seeing respectable 500 megabits  per second plus downloads straight from valve   servers the deck also has a dedicated Bluetooth  antenna now valve says that it better supports   multiple simultaneous Wireless gamepads for couch  games wireless bluetooth headphones should also   work better as well one of the most notable  enhancements of the steam deck OLED is its   significantly improved power efficiency this  new model has been designed to operate with   greater efficiency which means that it uses less  power and PR produces less Heat this is a major   advantage for all users as it not only improves  the overall performance of the system but also   extends the better life and reduces the amount  of heat generated by device the battery capacity   of the steam deck OLED has been substantially  increased and the device is powered by a more   energy efficient chip these improvements result  in a remarkable estimated increase in bettery   Life by approximately 50% this is a significant  upgrade from the original model which means users   can enjoy longer gaming sessions without worrying  about the battery draining depending on the type   of game being played the new OLED version can  last anywhere between 3 and 12 hours on a single   charge this is a considerable improvement over  the original models battery life which typically   range from 2 to 8 hours therefore whether you're  playing an intensive game that requires a lot of   power or a less demanding game the oler version  is designed to provide you a longer uninterrupted   gaming experience physically the new deck is  actually 29 G lighter enough that I can notice   a different blindfolded when picking them up  the shoulder buttons and the steam quick access   buttons are click here the sstick tops are taller  wider and grippier making it slightly easier to   make your video game character keep running in  One Direction I also love the reworked vibration   Motors that make feedback during scrolling so much  more prominent it also helps a lot during gameplay   as the vibration now is so so much stronger when  the first team deck was released there were a lot   of complaints for vibration and Val Engineers  admitted that adding any vibration at all on   the first model was an afterthought the choice  between the currently available LCD model and   the new ol options can be a challenging one the  LCD model is a more affordable option is just $400   while the OLED model with all its benefits cost an  extra5 however in my opinion the price difference   is worth it giving the significant Improvement  that the OLED model offers if you can afford   the extra cost the OLED model provides a much  better gaming experience thanks to its increased   bettery life better display and higher storage  for those who already own the original steam   deck the choice to upgrade to the OLED model may  depend on your personal circumstances and usage   patterns if the steam deck is your primary gaming  system and you use it constantly upgrading to the   OLED model might be worth it however if you only  use use the Steam Deck occasionally the upgrade   model is the best choice offering significant  gains for a bit more money if you already own   a steam deck whether or not to upgrade to  the OLED model depends on how often you   use the system and your budget.
